Our Spring General Meeting will be held on Monday evening April 26 at 7:30 p.m., featuring Katherine Lyons who will present “An Immigrant’s Trunk: The Life of Ida Rehr.” This fascinating portrayal is the story of how Ms. Rehr left her family in a shtetl in the Ukraine at age 17 to begin a new life in East Baltimore. Ida found employment in Baltimore’s garment district before opening a general store with her husband and raising three children. Photos and objects depicting this personalized story are on loan from the Jewish Museum of Maryland. Discussion and a Dessert Reception will follow. Guests are welcome. April 2010 nisan-iyar 5770 BETH TFILOH BULLETIN Mercaz News In 1959, 15,000 Jews - Now 1,500 Jews in Cuba Committed to the idea that all Jews are responsible for one another and that to save one person is to save the world, 39 Beth Tfiloh women visited the long-forgotten Jewish community of Cuba, one of the most beautiful islands in the world. We found that Cubans are living in great poverty but at the same time returning to religion. We met Jews who are beginning to live Jewish lives. Six years ago, the three synagogues in Havana were in disrepair, including the main Patronato Congregation, which not only is a shul but “home of the organized Jewish community.” Today, thanks to the generosity of the Weinberg Foundation, the Jewish Federation of the Greater Miami and the Joint Distribution Committee, the Patronato has been renovated. The building is once again beautiful. There is a computer lab in the building, a thriving Sunday school, library, social hall and kitchen. The computer center is used to teach children and adults Hebrew, Jewish history and Bar/Bat Mitzvah training. But the story of Havana’s Jewish renaissance is not only in the physical buildings – it is also in its people. All three synagogues - the Conservative Patronato, the Orthodox Adath Israel Synagogue and the Sephardic Congregation – have thriving Sunday School programs for children as well as Shabbat and holiday services. Beth Tfiloh brought the Jewish community medical supplies, clothing as well as Tzedakah. It was a remarkable experience!
