BETH TFILOH BULLETIN April 2010 nisan-iyar 5770 School News For more School news, photos and videos, visit www.bethtfiloh.com/mybt Mock Trial Team advances to Third Circuit Finals By Mr. Elden Schneider, Mock Trial Team Advisor For the first time in BT history, the Beth Tfiloh Mock Trial Team advanced to the Third Circuit Final held in the historic old Towson Courthouse. In an intense match between two excellent teams on March 11, Owings Mills High School prevailed over Beth Tfiloh and went on to represent Circuit Three in the eightcircuit regional playoffs to determine the finalists for the state championship. Throughout the season, the young men and women of Beth Tfiloh have been outstanding representatives of our school, and all of them were honored individually following the match. The event was very special and both teams will be honored as Circuit Finalists. In addition, Beth Tfiloh has been awarded a plaque to commemorate the team’s achievement as Circuit Finalist in this season’s competition. Congratulations to attorney coach Alan Carmel, faculty coach Elden Schneider, and to the members of the Beth Tfiloh Mock Trial Team: Jessica Marder (‘10) co-captain, Leora Friedman (‘10) cocaptain, William Sacks (‘10), Rachel Miller (‘10), Ariela Rodban (‘10), Max Cardin (‘11), Zachary Cardin (‘11), Josh Guttman (‘11), Dean Kaplan (‘11), Max Meizlish (‘11), Samuel Rosenfeld (‘11), Eyal Gurewitsch (‘12), Alexandra Kadish (‘12), Ilana Levin (‘12), Channa Rifkin (‘12), Andrew Sabintsev (‘12), Max Spitz (‘12), Jack Kwatinetz (‘13), Joshua Lipsitz (‘13), and Jennifer Neuman (‘13). The team’s success this year was due in large part to our wonderful volunteer attorney coach, Alan Carmel, a member of the Beth Tfiloh Congregation, and to our talented students led by seniors Leora Friedman, Jessica Marder, Rachel Miller, Ariela Rodban, and Will Sacks. Third Graders entertained North Oaks residents with a medley of Pesach songs, accompanied on guitar by Lower School Music Teacher, Mr. Brian Singer, and also joined by Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg and Mrs. Zipora Schorr. Pictured are Beth Tfiloh members, Mrs. Allie Rusell and Mrs. Rose Lazinsky. New PreSchool Director appointed for 2010- 2011 school year Director of Education, Mrs. Zipora Schorr, recently announced a change in personnel in our PreSchool for the coming school year. Mrs. Lynne Goldsmith will be stepping down as Director, and Mrs. Melissa Lebowitz has been appointed as the PreSchool Director. Mrs. Melissa Lebowitz Mrs. Lebowitz holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education from Loyola College and has a BA in Speech and Language Pathology/Audiology from East Stroudsburg University. Her significant experience in Early Childhood Education has included serving as an Early Childhood Intervention Specialist in the Howard County Public School System, a special educator for Baltimore City Schools for children ages 3-9 year old, and training preschool teachers and daycare providers at Anne Arundel Community College. She is currently on the staff of the Center for Jewish Education where she engages young families in Jewish learning as PJ Library Program Coordinator and Coordinator of the Shalom Baby, Jewish Childbirth Preparation Series. Mrs. Lebowitz has also been providing training for early childhood educators on various topics at the CJE and is a current Beth Tfiloh parent. In the announcement to parents, Mrs. Schorr said, “we wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to Lynne Goldsmith for her more than 20 years of dedicated service to our school. We will have an opportunity to wish her a fond farewell at a later date. Lynne served as Director of our Glyndon PreSchool HONK, JR., our Middle School Musical, received rave reviews. She has given many years of service to Beth Tfiloh and has made many friends during her time here. Look for an announcement in the Spring, when we will acknowledge Lynne for her commitment to Beth Tfiloh and to our mission.” 8th Graders engage in e-dialogue with Rabbi Jonathan Sacks By Rabbi Mordechai Abrahams, Middle School Faculty Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, is regarded by many as one of the leading Jewish thinkers of our day. Our 8th Grade Tanach class studies one of Rabbi Sacks’ Divrei Torah every week. In these Divrei Torah Rabbi Sacks combines both the laws and the stories in the Torah with his vast knowledge of history, philosophy and politics, to make the Torah speak to contemporary Jews in an original and thoughtful way. In my correspondence with Rabbi Sacks, a few months ago, he offered to make a video to address some of the questions that we had raised. The video arrived last week, and we watched it on Friday with Rabbi Wohlberg, Mrs. Schorr and Rabbi Soskil. It was a very special moment for our class. Rabbi Sacks addressed the fact that Jews have an obligation to learn from the wisdom in every civilization, while at the same time standing firm in our religious beliefs. He also spoke about repentance, and how the Torah relates to those who sinned and repented in earnest. Finally, he spoke about the Jewish people’s obligation to be a blessing to the world, and to help other people around the world, when the need arises. He used his extensive experience in foreign aid to refer to examples where British, American and Israeli Jews had responded quickly and generously to world catastrophes. It was a special opportunity for the students of our class, to have our questions answered by a world-renowned Torah scholar! Rabbi Sacks’ video is available for viewing at www.bethtfiloh.com/mybt. Brotherhood News The Beth Tfiloh Brotherhood successfully hosted its 68th Annual Donor Dinner on the evening of March 10, 2010. Approximately 400 people enjoyed a truly delicious buffet dinner catered by Yaffa in the Stanley Sagner Auditorium and then adjourned to the Dahan Sanctuary to be welcomed by Brotherhood President, Dr. Marc Leavey and Donor Chairman, Dr. Louis Baer. Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg offered a moving tribute to the evening’s honorees, Rabbi Ross and Emily Singer, citing their many contributions to the Beth Tfiloh School and Synagogue as well as to the larger Jewish community. Everyone then enjoyed an outstanding performance by Yisrael Campbell, a stand-up comedian and filmmaker who described his remarkable journey from lapsed Catholic to Orthodox Jew with stops along the way - - and accompanying circumcisions -- in the Reform and Conservative movements. The evening concluded with a wonderful dessert buffet in the Sagner. Special thanks go to the many companies and individuals who placed ads in the Donor book to support the Brotherhood’s funding of youth activities at Beth Tfiloh School, Synagogue and Camp. Just ten days later, Brotherhood Shabbat saw members of the Brotherhood participate in a beautiful Shabbat service, followed by a delicious cholent kiddush. Rabbi Ross Singer spoke eloquently about the Brotherhood and its officers and board, with outgoing president Dr. Marc Leavey and incoming president Dr. Louis Baer addressing the congregation with a look at the past, present, and future. And on the morning after, the Brotherhood joined hands with the Ner Tamid - Greenspring Synagogue in a Breakfast Forum featuring the Baltimore Klezmer Orchestra. Ner Tamid Brotherhood president Bill Saks addressed the group following Dr. Louis Baer’s introductory remarks. Dr. Howard Kaplan, of Ner Tamid, led the group in Birkat HaMazon following the delicious breakfast. The Baltimore Klezmer Orchestra then rocked the house with music from the old country and the new. Our final breakfast of the season will take place on Sunday, April 18, and will feature commentator Alan Walden in what is sure to be a fascinating presentation. Look for the flyer in the synagogue office or front desk, or just send your reservation into the Brotherhood. You can be a sponsor of the morning for just $36 with two tickets. And this is only one month of Brotherhood programming, programming that is designed to appeal to the wide range of Beth Tfiloh congregants.
