How To Celebrate a Birthday
My colleague Rabbi Jack Moline, of Congregation Agudas
Achim, posted on facebook how he wanted to be honored
for his 60th birthday, what he wanted as his “special
present”. He realized that he had all the material
possessions he needed so he suggested setting up a
fund, which has now been named The Sixty Fund, in
honor of the occasion of the establishment of the fund.
I was inspired by his choice in how he wanted to honor
his birthday, and with his permission, I share with you
the letter he sends to award winners of The Sixty Fund
which describes the fund. Award winners of the fund can
be found on the webpage of the fund
http://thesixtyfund.weebly.com/:
Congratulations!
You have been named a recipient of an award from the
Sixty Fund. The Sixty Fund acknowledges people who
have performed an act of courage, compassion,
generosity or wisdom.
admirable behavior remain unacknowledged when, in
fact, they are often the very acts that save another
human being from falling into loss, misery or despair.
Recipients of an award from the Sixty Fund are
encouraged to use the small gift at their own discretion.
Your award comes because you have performed the act
of described below that has come to our attention.
Accompanying this letter is your certificate and a check
for $18, the numerical value of the Hebrew word for
“life”, chai. Please use it as you choose – have a pizza,
take a friend out for coffee, give it to charity, invest in
penny stocks, pay your utility bill. In the opinion of the
Sixty Fund, you have already put much more than this
amount back into the human capital of the world. Thank
you for setting an example for others.
What a Simcha when the celebration goes beyond
ourselves and our inner circles, with beneficial effects
radiating onward.
The fund was founded on the sixtieth birthday of Jack
Moline at his request. It has modest resources that
provide a testimonial and small monetary award to
individuals who, regardless of their age, circumstances or
personal history, do something exceptional to
demonstrate one of the four values.
“Sixty” is the numerical value of the Hebrew letter
“samekh” which comes from the word meaning to
support (the falling). All too often these examples of
From the Social Action Committee
“ If you have a sapling in your hand, ready to plant, and
the Mosiach comes, plant the tree first and then go to
greet him” - Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai
Last month, the lights of Chanukah helped get us through
the longest nights of Winter. Even though January is still
technically Winter, we notice the days starting to get a
bit lighter, and even though most of our plants and trees
are still dormant, we celebrate the observance of Tu
b’Shevat (15th of Shevat), the New Year of Trees. This
was a time to calculate the age of trees to determine
when their first fruit could be dedicated to G-d, and then
be eaten by the people. It also helped determine the
10% that would be tithed to the Priests and the poor. As
we enjoy our Tu b’Shevat sedar, use this occasion to
make a donation to the JFS or other Food Bank, and help
make someone’s Winter a bit brighter.
Yasher Koach to Michelle Weinberg for again organizing
the Thanksgiving Baskets for families at the Transitional
Housing at Sand Point. Students from SJCS helped put
eight baskets together to provide that many families with
either a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner or a
Vegetarian meal. Reports are the baskets were well
received!
In December, a number of SAC volunteers helped staff
the Resource Room at Sand Point Housing. This is a
room where residents can get donated household items
such as lamps, kitchen supplies, and books and games.
Yasher Koach to Carolyn Cohen, Liz Labadie, Amy
Stephson, Judith Arms, Pam Center, and Marty Schnitzer
for volunteering.
As you read this issue of the Ruach, a number of Beth
Shalom members will be helping volunteer at Mary’s
Place, hosted by Temple Beth Am (TBA). Mary’s Place is
a shelter for women and children in downtown Seattle
that often has too few spaces, so various faith based
organizations host for a short period of time. TBA is
hosting from December 26th-January 8th. Volunteers
spend the night with the families, visit with them, and
help prepare dinner and breakfast. We are hoping to see
if it might be feasible for CBS to host Mary’s Place in the
future. The February Ruach will have more details about
this experience.
The SAC also helped provide blankets for Mary’s Place
families and collected personal needs items at the annual
CBS Chanukah Party.
By the time you receive the Ruach, there will have been
another Teen Feed on New Year’s Eve this December
31st. Yasher Koach to Joan Lite Miller, Marilyn Meyer,
and all the volunteers who helped cook and serve.
I wish all of you a happy secular new year and may 2013
be filled with health, happiness and spiritual fulfillment
for you and your family.
I am pleased to report that the Board of Directors
recently approved a new fundraising effort, the ATID
Program, to increase our staff to better serve our
community. ATID means future, and our goal is to secure
our future such that we are better able to touch our
members’ lives and assist members in their journeys to
live strong and fulfilling Jewish lives.
In 2013 we will embark on a campaign to raise funds to
increase our staff, primarily by adding additional rabbinic
or para-clergy personnel. Also, we plan to augment our
support staff to provide sufficient resources to accomplish
shul objectives.
You may ask, why do we need to add staff We are a
very active shul and we want to continue to do right and
be there for our members. Rabbi Borodin does an
excellent job assisting our members, especially those-inneed,
yet there are limits to the services one person can
provide. We will benefit from additional clergy to assist
our members on their Jewish journey in all phases of
their lives. With additional staff we will be better able to
touch our members’ lives and follow-up on members’
spiritual, educational, and pastoral needs and allow
members to spend more quality time with clergy.
Message from the President
additional staff until sufficient pledges are in place. We
expect that annually 70% of the funds will be used for
clergy and 30% for support. After three years our goal is
that a slight increase in membership and ongoing
generosity of members will fully support the new
positions.
We are extremely fortunate that Carol Gown and Peter
Shapiro will chair the ATID fundraising effort. Initially we
will seek major gifts to the program through one-on-one
conversations with our members, and hopefully by the
summer we will embark upon a fundraising campaign
involving the entire congregation.
The board and I are excited as we embark on this effort.
Once in-place, we believe that we will be a stronger,
better connected and even more sacred community.
Your generosity will make this program successful and I
believe the shul will be rewarded with a transformational
change in our ability to touch our members’ lives.
I will keep you updated on the ATID Program. If you
would like to assist in the effort, either through financial
support or as a volunteer fundraiser, please contact me.
As always, if you have a comment for me, email me at:
CBSMarkS@gmail.com
B’Shalom,
How will we accomplish this Our goal is to raise an
additional $100,000 per year for each of the next three
years. We will ask members to make three year pledges
to the ATID Program. We expect that much of 2013 will
be spent obtaining these pledges and we will not hire
attendees and the second event
was poker night that had 16
players! So far the Men’s club
raised over $400, ear-marked for
the youth department. Thank you
to all of the guys that have shown
strong leadership, interest and
support for this new initiative in
Approaching the Divine Other –
Opportunities, Dangers, and Responsibilities
Instructor: Beth Huppin
Study of Jewish texts can help us talk about our inner
spiritual life. Sometimes God feels near, and other
times God feels far away, and both can be frightening
and confusing. How can we talk about it Frequently we
don’t have a common language for an experience that is
very private. By definition, God is beyond language.
Our texts are filled with guidance and metaphors for
this deeply personal spiritual experience. From the Bible
to the Rabbis of the Talmud, to the “hevraya” of the
Zohar (Jewish mystical text), to Hassidic literature, our
people have grappled with issues of the human spirit
and how we experience God. We seek these spiritual
experiences for different reasons, but especially at difficult
and/or transitional times in our lives. Examine traditional
texts that speak about these issues. Learn the
language of Jewish mystical practice and the great responsibilities,
dangers and opportunities that can be
created by these experiences.
- שיעור פרקי אבות-‏ Pirkei Avot
with the commentary of Me’am Lo’ez
Instructor: Yiscah Smith
Avoth (Pirkei Avot – The Ethics of the Fathers) is the
one Talmudic tract that explores the very roots of Judaism.
It has long been regarded as a rare treasure of
our Torah tradition. Pirkei Avot, as contrasted with the
Talmud’s discussions around Jewish law, centers our
attention directly on the Jew’s efforts to improve one’s
relationship with G-d and fellow human being. Of all
the many commentaries written on Avoth, perhaps the
clearest is that published in 1747 by Rabbi Yitzchak Magriso
of Constantinople , as part of the famed Me’am
Lo’ez series. His commentary was written in Ladino and
was translated into English in 1978 by David N. Barocas,
a Sephardic scholar from Rodesto, Turkey and then
edited into a contemporary idiom by Rabbi Aryeh
Kaplan. Rabbi Magriso ferrets out the root meaning of
the text, and presents it in clear, unambiguous language.
Stories, parables and ethical discussions round
out his commentary to produce a clear and highly inspirational
teaching.
Connecting Eretz Yisrael to
Medinat Yisrael
Instructor: Yiscah Smith
In the Book of Exodus, Chapter 3, Verse 8, we read, " I
have descended to rescue them from the hands of the
Egyptians and to bring them up from that land, to a
good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and
honey..." In the Book of Deuteronemy, Chapter 11,
Verse 12, when referring to the Land of Israel, we read,
"a land the L-rd your G-d looks after; the eyes of the L-
rd your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of
the year to the end of the year."
David Ben-Gurion, the modern State of Israel's first
Prime Minister, stated that, "Moshe gave the Jews a
definition of their mission, a reason for their presence
as a people....And today, 3,300 years later, this
definition is as meaningful as when first formulated. In
other words, all things in life change yet certain ideas
and principles by the truth they embody abide for all
time." Testifying before the British Royal Peel Commission
in 1936 , when asked to identify the basis of the
Jewish claim, David Ben-Gurion replied, "The Bible is our
mandate."
What is the connection between the Biblical Land of Israel
and the modern State of Israel. How does the former
influence the latter Did the latter find its beginnings
in the former This class will explore Eretz Yisrael
in the weekly Parshat HaShavuah and what relevancy
that has for Israel today. We will engage in an ongoing
text based discussion if the Land of Israel is truly one of
the cornerstones of Judaism. We will inquire how the
Torah, as well as our classical Sages, address this matter.
This class will shed new insights, based on the
Books of Samuel and Kings, on the birth of the modern
Zionist movement and the legitimacy for the establishment
of the new State of Israel whose statehood was
declared in May 1948, on the very same soil that the
Bible refers to as the Land of Israel.
Middah of the
Month
January’s topic
Responsibility—Achrayut
The Hebrew term
consistently translated
into English as
“responsibility” is
achrayut, or achrayus.
Some say the root of achrayut is achar, which means
“after.”2 Others say it is acher, meaning “other.”
Deriving responsibility from awareness of consequences
is established in the Mishnah which asserts that human
beings are always responsible for the consequences of
their actions, whether what occurred was the result of
action that was voluntary or involuntary, deliberate or
inadvertent. Mussar finds a lesson for us here. Perhaps
we are too quick to say “it’s not my fault the bus was
late” or point a finger at someone else when there is a
negative outcome.
The other candidate for the root of achrayut is the word
acher, meaning “other.” Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv, the
Alter of Kelm, developed the notion of responsibility to
others to its highest form. “Bearing the burden of the
other” is how he put it. Rabbi Ira Stone, translator of
Rabbi Simcha Zissel’s words, sums up his spiritual
teaching by saying, “The ego develops as the object of
love, the soul as its subject.” In other words, bearing
the burden of the other is action that cultivates the soul
of the doer. Responsibility, then, takes on even greater
importance because it stands for and reflects a central
thrust of spiritual growth, which is to rise up and beyond
living in our small self who is interested only in
gratification in the present moment, to evolve into the
larger self who, from its elevated vantage point, can see
and take in both the larger sweep of time and the living
presence of others.
Please join Shirah and Rabbi Harry Zeitlin in an
exploration of responsibility and related middot
on January 26 from 1:15-2:30pm in the Beit Midrash.
Photo Directory
It’s the time again to put on a nice outfit and come have your portrait taken for the new Beth Shalom
Photo Directory. This is a resource widely used by many in the community and our goal this time around
to get more participation than we have in the past.
The registration process is VERY simple, online for those comfortable doing it themselves, and we’ll be
happy to help sign you up if that’s preferred. Photo shoots will begin in mid-January – 13, 14, 15, 20,
21, 27, and 28.
The Directory Project is being run by CBS member, Yaakov Medrash, who is happy to answer questions
and help you sign up. He is also in need of volunteers to help call members for registration. If you have
a question or are interested in helping out – please call Yaakov in the evenings between 7 & 9:30pm at
206-542-1347 or email directory@bethshalomseattle.org. Below is the weblink to Lifetouch:
Movie Night: Food Stamped
Thursday, January 17 from 7:15-9:15pm
Join us for a second screening of the film and post
film conversation in connection to the national Jewish
Food Stamp Challenge.
Food Stamped is an informative documentary film
following a couple as they attempt to eat a healthy,
well-balanced diet on a food stamp budget. Through
their adventures they consult with members of U.S.
Congress, food justice organizations, nutrition experts, and people living
on food stamps to take a deep look at America’s broken food system.
RSVP to lifecycle@bethshalomseattle.org or call 206-524-0075.
If you are not able to make the January screening, please note that starting in February
the movie will be available for borrowing.
