on Shabbat!
Please join teachers Joel Goldstein and Stuart Light for a
weekly Talmud class covering the second chapter of Bava
Metzia. This class meets every Shabbat after Kiddush. We
will look not only at the Talmud in Bava Metzia, but at
other connected pieces of Talmud and the opinions of
commentaries ranging from Rashi, Tosefot, Rambam,
Ramban, and Shulchan Aruch. No Talmud experience is
necessary, nor is knowing all the terms in this class
summary; all you need is an open mind and willingness to
engage the text. Class is after Kiddush lunch. No Charge.
Contracts for the Sale of Chametz are due on
Wednesday, April 5th at 4:00pm. Late contracts will
not be accepted. Blank forms can be found in the
time for beginners to join the class. No experience
necessary. Please wear shoes that slide easily. Tennis
shoes are NOT recommended. A 5 class punchcard is $30
for members, $40 for non-members.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
What our DNA tells us about our Jewish origins
and migrations: with Rita Rothenberg Calvo
Shabbat, 3/24 from 1:15-2:15pm in the Beit
Midrash
Thanks to revolutionary advances in genetics and
genomics research, science is advancing understanding
of human geographic and ethnic/racial origins. Modern
techniques allow separating maternal and paternal
origins. Studies of Jews from around the world have
shown a genetic signature of Jewish ancestry. The data
show that the male founders of all groups - e.g.
Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi (“oriental”)] of modern
Jews came from same ancestral male population from
the Middle East. Surprisingly however the female
founders have very different genetic histories from the
men. Each community has few female founders but each
community is different from the others. We will also
discuss ideas on why there are a group of “Jewish”
genetic diseases.
Rita Calvo, aunt of CBS member, Roz Bornstein, taught
biochemistry and human genetics at Cornell University.
Order-Seder with
Shirah Bell & Rabbi
Harry Zeitlin
Shabbat, 3/31 from
1:15pm in the Beit
Midrash
The soul trait of order is
about the middle way.
Too little order gives
birth to chaos, while at the other end of the range, too
much order ties us up in obsessive rigidity. The best in
life lies between these extremes, and we are welladvised
to seek that moderate course.
Savage's teaching on Judaism and food, to talk about
what we would like to be doing as a community on this
