The Joshua Leadership Fund
The Joshua Leadership Fund What is that
The Jewish community has had many different
enterprises with the name Joshua connected to the
Biblical Joshua and the role he played in checking out the
land of Israel, being one of only two spies to bring back a
good report of the land, and his leadership following the
death of Moses. It is under his leadership that we were
able to cross the Jordan river and enter into the land of
Israel. Many of our people’s experiences under him are
recorded in the Book of Joshua, the first of our prophetic
books (Neviim). A few of these chapters are read as part
of our weekly and holiday Haftarahs.
It is in connection to Joshua’s role of scouting out the
land, and bringing back information and leadership skills
to help the children of Israel that I have named a new
fund at Beth Shalom—The Joshua Leadership Fund. In
honor of my wedding, my fiancé Cary and I wanted to
find ways to extend our blessings through the giving of
Tzedakah with the hope that in lieu of presents, our
guests would contribute to organizations close to our
hearts. We decided that we wanted to be connected with
four different areas of need and have chosen to partner
with four different Jewish organizations: our community
at Beth Shalom, addressing the crisis of hunger
(partnering with MAZON), building the Israel of our
dreams (partnering with the New Israel Fund - NIF) and
improving the lives of the most vulnerable in the
developing world (partnering with American Jewish World
Service - AJWS). Together with MAZON, NIF and AJWS,
we have created ways to donate in honor of our wedding
– the links are included in our wedding invitations (which
hopefully you have all now received, but if not, contact
Sasha in the office).
Here at Beth Shalom, while we have many important
areas of need which benefit immensely from people’s
generosity (and we would be honored to have donations
made to any one of Beth Shalom’s funds), we were
interested in creating a new fund to celebrate our
marriage, and to help meet a need at Beth Shalom for
which we currently have no resources allocated.
Beth Shalom is a thriving congregation because of our
members’ dedication (in both hours and money). We
have the most incredible dedicated lay leaders and
volunteers.
An important avenue to supporting our lay leaders and
volunteers, to help them be nourished and reach new
levels of leadership and expertise, is in facilitating
attending relevant conferences, seminars, workshops and
training in their areas of involvement. These are usually a
distance from Seattle and have a heavy price tag. The
Joshua Leadership Fund’s goal is to partner with Beth
Shalom lay leaders through helping defray some of the
costs associated with attending these programs that will
support the growth of our members’ leadership and our
Beth Shalom community. In return for receiving support
from the Joshua Leadership Fund, members will make a
commitment to particular projects or leadership roles
they will be playing at Beth Shalom that are of benefit to
the community.
I know from my own experience that often participating
in conferences, seminars and workshops allows one to
grow and become energized through exposure to best
practices in the field, training, gaining access to
resources and meeting other individuals working on
similar initiative. And in turn, our community as a whole
will benefit from the enhanced dedication, leadership and
new ideas of the fellows of the fund.
committee, training to create our own hevra kadisha and
these conferences are only a few suggestions of the
wonderful opportunities that exist.
Cary and I are very grateful for your support. And we
feel incredibly privileged to be part of this wonderful Beth
you in its continued growth and development.
Message from the President
Now that spring is firmly here, it reminds me that our
annual meeting is coming up. I invite all members to
attend Beth Shalom’s annual meeting on Sunday, May
19th at 10:30 am. Come enjoy some nosh with our
community, honor our volunteer of the year and learn of
the state of the shul.
As we approach the end of the year, my thoughts turns
to finances. Our expectation is that we will end the fiscal
year on May 31st on a high note. Help us end the year
on the positive side – please complete your payment now
of dues, tuition, High Holiday and Double Chai pledges
and other amounts which are due this fiscal year. Our
sacred community thanks you for your kind support.
Help make Kevin Coskey’s day by purchasing scrip at the
annual meeting. We are very fortunate that Kevin works
tirelessly to direct our scrip program to raise money for
the shul. Each year the shul receives over $10,000
income from this program. The shul sells scrip or gift
cards for QFC/Fred Meyer, PCC, Safeway, Albertsons,
Home Depot, Starbucks, ARCO and we recently added
Whole Foods. Members receive face value of the gift
cards and the shul earns about 4% on each sale.
Currently 36% of our membership purchase scrip – are
you among this group
Many of us purchase items from these stores regularly.
Simply contact the office to purchase your scrip and, if
desired, we can arrange a monthly scrip subscription for
you. PCC cards are reloadable at the store and the shul
gets credit for the reload. I am happy to share how
Sheryl and I use the scrip program. Every month we
purchase $600 in scrip for various stores to cover our
groceries, sundries and home maintenance items. We
also provide scrip to family members and friends. And,
we often use the scrip to purchase gift cards at stores to
provide gifts for special occasions. For us the scrip program
is a win-win situation – the shul benefits, we purchase
our necessities and we are able to make others
happy. With all these opportunities regarding scrip I’m
sure that you will find a way to make scrip work for your
family. Let me know if you have any questions regarding
scrip.
As always, if you have a comment for me, email me at:
S O C I A L A C TI O N C OM M I T T E E, C O N TA C T: G A I L C O SK E Y, N I C O L E H A B ER
And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall
not reap all the way to the edges of the field, or gather
the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for
the poor and the stranger: I the Eternal am your God.
(Lev. 23:22)
Mid-May marks the beginning of Shavuot and the end of
the counting of the Omer. The Book of Ruth is
traditionally read during Shavuot, and it contains many
social justice themes such as reaching out to strangers
and our communal obligations to those in need. We read
how Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, were collecting
the gleanings of the harvest when they are noticed by
Boaz, who has his workers leave extra sheaves of grain
for Ruth and Naomi.
In a form of modern ‘gleaning’, SAC Chair Gail Coskey
initiated a new program to donate chametz before
Pesach. As Gail reports:
The SAC would like to thank the CBS community for their
generous contributions of "open," non-perishable food
for the Pre-Passover food drive. Tent City & Mary's Place
(homeless day center for women & children) greatly
appreciated your food donations. We made three trips
with a full van to both locations. The collection box was
overflowing and SAC plans to continue this drive next
year. Thanks again for your support.
This also complemented daughter Rachel Coskey’s Bat
Mitzvah project. Rachel writes: “Thank you so much for
helping me with my Bat Mitzvah Project of collecting
clothes for Mary's Place. They really appreciated all the
clothes. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness.”
As we reflect on those who do not have enough to eat, I
am always struck by the abundance of food in any
grocery store or Costco in Seattle. How can there be
hunger in the midst of so much food One CBS member,
Dan Bernhard is hoping to explore this issue, and others,
with the Religious School. In his own words: “A couple of
Sundays before Passover, my daughter Abby (a high
school senior) and I conducted a teaching with the pre-K
through second graders of the religious school at
Congregation Beth Shalom in which the kids shared
tzedakah, symbolized by Satsuma oranges. The exercise
emphasized the importance of mutual respect and
kindness in the process of giving and accepting tzedakah.
MAZON provided the kids with tzedakah boxes and
several pieces of literature designed to facilitate a
discussion of hunger-related issues in the context of
Pesach. A week before the holiday I distributed the
MAZON Passover literature to the Prozdor kids. We had a
short, but rewarding discussion about the reality of
hunger in the United States. These young people
demonstrated a surprising level of knowledge about food
insecurity, and a heartening level of engagement in
seeking remedies to the problem.
I look forward to hearing from the kids about the
discussions that took place at their respective Seders
concerning food insecurity. Also, I hope to continue my
involvement with the religious school, representing
MAZON and the Social Action Committee in an ongoing
effort to raise awareness among the kids of Congregation
Beth Shalom of the issues surrounding food insecurity,
homelessness, and women’s and children’s rights.”
We look forward to getting updates from Dan and letting
you know about Religious School involvement with social
justice issues.
Members of our community, who don’t have enough to
eat, often don’t have adequate shelter. Regular readers
of this column know that CBS is involved with Temple
Beth Am in the Homeless-to-Renter (H2R) program.
According to SAC member Carolyn Cohen: “As of March,
2013, H2R has supported 194 families in moving into
housing! This number represents a total of 436 people:
238 adults and 198 children. The average grant is $740,
and is used for move-in costs. Beth Shalom is an H2R
affiliate member, and our support has contributed
significantly to its success. For example, at Purim, CBS
members donated over $800 to the fund, covering a little
over the average move-in costs for one family. Please
save the date for the next H2R event which will be on
Sunday, August 18th, at 5 pm, and see the
announcement on page 19. Donations to H2R are always
welcome, and can be made to CBS, identified as
H2R/Social Action Fund.” Please contact Carolyn Cohen
if you have any questions about H2R.
On Shabbat, March 30th, David Frum, spoke to the
congregation about his involvement with the local
chapter of Habitat for Humanity. David talked about the
formidable economic obstacles to buying a home in and
around Seattle, and how HforH helps families build and
move into affordable housing. To this end CBS is
participating in an Interfaith Build on Sunday, June 2nd.
While there might be enough workers from CBS, help will
be needed the week before to make lunch for the
workers. If you would like information about helping in
this area, contact Sheryl Kipnis at : cbshforh@gmail.com.
From time to time there are social action issues that
might start in other parts of the country, but eventually
work there way to Seattle. Former SAC Chairperson,
Edna Oberman, brings to our attention an issue relating
to the Hyatt Hotel chain. Edna reports:
DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A THREE-YEAR-OLD JEWISH
BOYCOTT OF THE HYATT HOTELS BECAUSE OF THE WAY
THEY TREAT THEIR WORKERS We thought not.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO TAKE ACTION IN
SEATTLE Read on.
The Hyatts are controlled by Chicago’s Pritzker family,
who are active in Jewish civic life. The Pritzkers also are
one of the wealthiest families in the U.S. Yet, Hyatt is
notorious for injuries among its housekeepers, for
replacing career housekeepers with minimum wage
temporary workers, and for punishing workers who
complain. Three years ago, Jewish religious leaders, as
an act of faith, declared the Hyatt hotels “lo kasher” for
their treatment of workers, and initiated a boycott. So
far, 5,000 organizations and individuals, both Jewish and
non-Jewish, have signed on to the boycott, including
some 250 rabbis and cantors. The rabbis consist of
Reform, Reconstructionist, and Conservative Rabbis
(including the renowned Elliot N. Dorff). Look on the
Internet for “Justice at Hyatt” for the Jewish statement
called “Open the Gates of Justice.” Another source is
“Hyatt Hurts.”
HERE’S THE SEATTLE CONNECTION: Seattle Opera has
recently teamed up with the Grand Hyatt to offer a
special discount for visitors to Wagner’s “Ring” cycle in
August. The Opera has named the Grand Hyatt its
“official” hotel for the “Ring.” To support the Jewishinspired
boycott of the Hyatt, this is the time to WRITE
TO THE SEATTLE OPERA TO OBJECT TO THE
CONNECTION WITH THE HYATT. State if you’re an opera
goer; if not, you can write out of civic pride in the Opera.
Perhaps as few as 20 letters or e-mails can make a
difference.
If you would like additional information about this issue,
contact Edna at (206) 306-8765.
Finally, please look for upcoming information about the
CBS Blood Drive in June.
The next scheduled SAC meeting will be on Thursday,
May 2. Meetings are held at CBS from 7:30 -9PM. All
are welcome.
If you would like more information about upcoming or
ongoing SAC activities, contact Gail or Nicole at:
Youth Updates
F R O M TH E D I R E C T O R OF E D U C A TI ON: I R I T E L I A V
For the last several years, one of our CBS children has
made a rather amusing comment to me on multiple
occasions. She has remarked that “you aren’t a grown
up yet. You aren’t married.” As a strong, independent,
single woman it was a little hard not to take offense at
that comment. The fact that it was made by an innocent
young child helped. But, as my wedding is now only a
little over three months away, I’m struck by how
different my life really does feel now that I am getting
married.
But most of all, it’s amazing how much Josh and I make
nearly every decision based on what is best for our
future children. Without any idea on when we might
have children (God willing) or what those children will be
like, we are already thinking about their education, what
kind of home we want them to be raised in, and how to
ensure they have good relationships with their grandparents,
aunts, uncles, and cousins. As someone who
has dedicated most of my adult life to caring for literally
hundreds of children, it is interesting to be
contemplating being the one making the decisions on
parenting, instead of just brainstorming with parents on
ideas for how to help their children. I find myself
thinking a lot about the many children I have watched
grow up at Beth Shalom and pondering what aspects of
their parents’ choices I hope to emulate in my own
home.
In addition to all the big changes happening in my life, I
am truly amused by some of the little ones. I find
myself starting more and more sentences with “we”
instead of “I”. My social calendar has become much
more complicated, as we merge the lives of two busy
professionals (neither of which have typical 9-5 jobs)
and go to the multitude of appointments involved in
wedding planning, making it far too difficult to spend as
much time as I would like with other loved ones. I find
myself constantly unable to make decisions quickly, as I
am acutely aware that I am no longer the only one
impacted by my choices. Instead, I regularly reply to
questions and emails with “Let me ask Josh and get
back to you…”
Beth Shalom does an exceptional job of, as a
congregation, raising children who are bright, articulate,
committed to social justice, and deeply immersed in
Judaism and Jewish life. I am constantly in awe of how
capable and extraordinary our children are in this
community. I am tremendously grateful that I have had
nearly 13 years to learn from the multitudes of
exceptional parents in this community. I look forward to
the time when I will be able to put all I have learned
here to good use in my own family. I am also excited to
use this new chapter in my life to continue to shape our
educational programming at CBS.
What changes are happening in your life How has CBS
helped to shape you into the person you are What
challenges have you faced and has the CBS community
been helpful in meeting those challenges What exciting
new adventures are on the horizon I hope that our
community has meant as much to you as it has to me.
As all of our lives change over time, I for one, feel
grateful that I get such an exceptional community to
share it with. I hope that you do as well.
- שיעור פרקי אבות-‏ Pirkei Avot
with the commentary of Me’am Lo’ez
Instructor: Yiscah Smith
Avoth (Pirkei Avot – The Ethics of the Fathers) is the
one Talmudic tract that explores the very roots of
Judaism. It has long been regarded as a rare treasure
of our Torah tradition. Pirkei Avot, as contrasted with
the Talmud’s discussions around Jewish law, centers our
attention directly on the Jew’s efforts to improve one’s
relationship with G-d and fellow human being. Of all
the many commentaries written on Avoth, perhaps the
clearest is that published in 1747 by Rabbi Yitzchak
Magriso of Constantinople , as part of the famed Me’am
Lo’ez series. His commentary was written in Ladino and
was translated into English in 1978 by David N.
Barocas, a Sephardic scholar from Rodesto, Turkey and
then edited into a contemporary idiom by Rabbi Aryeh
Kaplan. Rabbi Magriso ferrets out the root meaning of
the text, and presents it in clear, unambiguous
language. Stories, parables and ethical discussions
round out his commentary to produce a clear and highly
inspirational teaching.
Next meeting, May 11 1:15-2:30pm
Topic: Faith—Emunah
The target for a life well lived
is summed up in the word
wholeness (sh’lemut), about
which Rabbi Shlomo Wolbe
says: “We seek only our
wholeness.” Then he guides,
“The foundation of wholeness
is faith.” Without faith,
wholeness will elude us.
Alan Morinis writes: “to my way of thinking, the
primary question is not whether or not you believe in
God, but rather a more empirical issue of where to
look to find God. If you know where to look for God,
then you have the potential to perceive a reality, and
that is a far better foundation for faith than either
blind belief or adherence to received opinions.”
To build a foundation of faith, then, we need to pay
attention to the sorts of glimpses, intuitions and
flashes that are the only way in which we can hope
to experience something of the presence of God.
How can you grow in faith, or into faith
The doorway to faith is not opened by rational
thought. Only through elevated inner experience can
one come to faith or strengthen the faith one has.
Through reflection and learning, we may be
convinced that there must be more to life than is
apparent, but it is only through lived experience that
this notion becomes implanted as faith.
Each of us needs to ask ourselves what it is that
stands in the way of opening to faith, and what we
can do about it. There are many sorts of actions that
can be undertaken as a result of faith, and that in
the doing can also become a source of faith. This is
true of the classic acts of loving-kindness, like giving
charity, visiting the sick, clothing the naked, and
burying the dead. The same is true of prayer. It is
logical to think that living a life by the
commandments would demand that faith be in place
first; my experience is that living by the
commandments fosters and nurtures faith as well. In
the end, what is important about faith is that we
keep seeking.
B’NAI MITZVAH - Mazel Tov
Sarah Kader Katz
Sarah Kader Katz will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Shabbat morning June
5, 2010, parshat Behar/Behukotai.
Sarah is the daughter of Steve Katz and Claire Lieberman and the sister of Maya. She is
the granddaughter of Patty and Mayer Glimcher and Veronica and the late Walter Katz
(z”l) of Columbus, Ohio, and the late Betty and Lee Lieberman (z”l) and Walter and
Doris Lehman (z”l) of Toledo, Ohio.
Sarah is a seventh grade student at University Prep, and is a graduate of the Seattle
Jewish Community School. She enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and skiing, singing
and dancing, and spending time with friends. Her mitzvah project involves serving
meals to, and collecting dental supplies for, homeless adolescents as part of Teen Feed.
Sarah and her family invite the congregation to share in her simcha and join a Kiddush
lunch following services.
Hannah Braunstein Wahl
Hannah Braunstein Wahl will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 18,
2013. Hannah is the daughter of Deb and Martin Wahl, and the sister of Livia.
Hannah is a 7th grader at the Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle. She
loves science, math, and writing, and has worked hard to become a consistent
straight-A student. She plays volleyball at JDS, and with the Moxie Otters yearround.
This year, she surprised herself by running the third-fastest time in the
girls mile at JDS since 2007. At home, Hannah likes to have fun with Livia and her
yellow lab, BJ. She also likes to swim, play tennis, hike, spend time with friends,
play clarinet, and sing. Hannah loves living in Seattle, and especially loves the
warm community of friends that she has found here.
For her mitzvah project, Hannah plans to volunteer at Teen Feed beginning in
May.
We would like to invite the community to join us as Hannah becomes a bat
mitzvah, and to celebrate with us at the Kiddush luncheon following Shabbat morning services.
Theo Berman
Theo Berman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 1,
Parshat Shalach. He is the son of Mark Berman and Wendy Katz and
the brother of William Berman. Theo attends Eckstein Middle School,
where his favorite classes are Spanish and Tech. When not deep in a
book, Theo enjoys Magic tournaments, gluten-free crepes, rock
