How do you feel about the municipal strike
With plastic bags blowing everywhere and angry municipal workers shouting for better incomes,
Grahamstown’s streets and pavements are in a mess. Grocott’s Mail reporters Nokulunga Ntantiso,
Bilal Randeree, Rudzani Floyd Musekwa and Vincent Huck went to find out how Grahamstonians
feel about the municipal strike
Bonga Velem
Salesman
The strike is right: The
municipal workers are
rendering services and
they should get what they
deserve. But I do not
support them throwing
rubbish on the streets.
Zoliswa Ngesi
Saleswoman
I support the municipal
strikers because they
work hard. You can’t claim
something you do not
deserve, so they know
what they are doing.
Khawar Shahzad
Businessman
I think that the strike is
justified because food and
everything is expensive
and the cost of living has
gone up. The striking
municipal workers need to
survive also.
Masixole Yaka
Hairdresser
They are right: The job
they are doing is too much
for the money they are
getting. So they are doing
the right thing for
themselves.
Tiny January
Cashier
They have their rights and
whatever they are doing, it
is the right thing to do. But
the garbage is bad and
can affect our children and
the environment.
Nomakhaya Ndika
Fashion Designer
They work hard and I don’t
see anything wrong with
their actions – you can do
anything when you are
striking.
Dozens of businessmen and women,
residents and even street kids got stuck into
‘Operation Clean Up’ on Wednesday
afternoon, cleaning the streets in the
CBD after they were trashed by striking
municipal workers.
I think striking is healthy
for our democracy but the
vandalism and hooliganism
that goes with it is not
necessary.
Vaughan Van Rheede
Student
I’m a republican capitalist,
so from an economic point
of view I think it is against
the fundamental principals
of economy. Due to the current
international crisis, we
need to be more efficient.
Gladys Dyanti
Attendant
We are suffering, we
need more money. I am
with them it is their right to
strike so they should.
Corné Naude
Technician
People deserve to be paid
according to how much
they put in, but upturning of
bins is unnecessary to say
the least.
Mark Bridger
Braille Printing Assistant
I think with the current
economic climate asking
for 15% is being unreasonable,
and damaging
property and throwing rubbish
around is pathetic.
Annemarie Steele
Retired
They are the ones who
will have to clean up the
mess. They don’t deserve
to work at all if all they do
is destroy property and
make a mess.
Renier Laas
Detective Inspector
Their behaviour is unnecessary
and goes to show how
they don’t deserve what
they are asking for.
Claudia Sheriff
Learner
They should understand
that they serve us as the
people and by doing what
they are doing they are
hurting us most, not the
government.
