Top Grahamstown extreme sportsman, Bradley
Stephenson will leave for Australia on
6 August where he will train with the American
Moguls team and compete in the Australia New
Zealand Continental Cup where he is hoping to earn
enough points to be able to enter the World Cup in
Europe in December. This will then make him eligible
to be selected for the Winter Olympics.
Graeme College trounce
Portsmouth
Lolo Tali
Graeme College second rugby
team defeated Portsmouth
Grammar School by 36 points
to 24 at Somerset Field yesterday.
The team acquitted themselves
reasonably well against
the visiting side.
For the first few minutes,
play was concentrated on the
Graeme half as the visitors
applied pressure. The first try,
however, came from Graeme
winger Jono Nunn who made
a brilliant solo run from his
side of the field to dot under the
poles 12 minutes into the game.
Portsmouth Grammar school
responded with a try from their
scrum-half Tom Brooks in the
28 minute.The teams were
level at 7-7.
Wandile Lupuwana, a
Graeme hooker, scored a try
which put his side ahead by 12
points to seven. Portsmouth
clawed their way back via a
penalty which put the score
at 17-10 after the home side
NEXT TIME, MAYBE... Graeme College second team rugby
player Lee Mapaling brushes off an attempt at a tackle from
his Portsmouth Grammar School opponent.
Stephenson finished his June exams at Rhodes
University before working and training at Tiffindell
until last weekend when he competed in the King’s
Cup snowboarding and skiing event at Afriski, a ski
resort in Lesotho.
While there were no events offered in which he
specialises, he entered the alpine racing events –
slalom skiing and snowboarding – for fun. He made
it through to the finals of the snowboarding slalom
and lost to his coach, Alex Heath, by a short distance.
scored another try by Lee
Maphaleng. Both Nunn and
Maphaleng scored one try to
cap their day with a brace for
themselves. At the final whistle,
Graeme were victorious.
Portsmouth are scheduled to
travel to Port Elizabeth where
they were expected to play a
number of matches.
The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in
partnership with the Department of Social Development and
Age-in-Action will host a zonal Golden Games event at Prospect
Field at Rhodes University on 12 August from 9am to 2pm.
The Golden Games cater for senior citizens older than 60
years and include fun activities such as pass the ball, duck walk
and ring the stick as well as more competitive events such as
100m sprints, a 500m brisk walk and a 800m run/jog.
All are welcome to come and watch the games and those
fitting the category (over 60) are welcome to contact Hilton
Adonis on 046 603 4211 during office hours to enter on the day.
Stephen Penney
Heath has taken part in the past three Olympics in
the slalom event, which is his speciality. Stephenson
also gave a demonstration of freestyle skiing for the
crowd, which was shown on the news on Sunday
evening. In between taking part in various competitions
this year, Stephenson will complete the academic
year at Rhodes. While his attempt at making
the Winter Olympics is still a long way off he says he
is highly motivated to make the Olympics and says
his chances of making it “look good”.
Golden Games keep
seniors active
Provincial trials take off
Four U19 female soccer players, Nosifundo Mfabana, Mileka
Ntshobodi, Nomalibongwe Qwibi and Nomaxabiso Funani were
part of the Cacadu U19 girls soccer team which took part in the
Eastern Cape U19 soccer trials in East London on Saturday.
Local soccer coach, Chris Totobela was the Cacadu team
manager, while African Connections women’s soccer team
member, Nwabisa Tyelbooi was the team coach. All districts
within the Eastern Cape which are part of the Absa women’s
soccer league, were represented at the trials. The Cacadu side
played against the Chris Hani team, losing 0-1. The trials were
held to select an Eastern Cape side which will take part in the
inter-provincial tournament to be held in Pretoria in a few
weeks. The Eastern Cape side has not yet been finalised.
