News in brief
Attempted murder
Last Thursday, a man witnessed
an assault outside the Rat & Parrot
pub on New Street. Yet when
he attempted to help the victim,
he was also attacked. The complainant
says he was walking out
of the pub when he saw a male assaulting
a homeless person. While
assisting the victim, the suspect
turned to him and stabbed him.
He was stabbed in the left side of
his chest and was taken to Greenacres
Hospital in Elizabeth. Police
spokesperson, Ndishavhelafhi
Mamuthubi says no arrests have
been made in connection with the
case. – MARIA SIBIYA
Stabbed by ex-boyfreind
A 20-year-old woman says she was
on her way to Zolani on Sunday
when she met her ex-boyfreind on
the way. She says he demanded to
speak to her but she refused. The
suspect then grabbed her and
forced her to walk with him. She
says she then picked up a stone
and threw it at him. While they
were both fighting the suspect
stabbed the woman behind the
ear with a knife. No arrests have
been made. – MS
Did Sadtu join the strike
The South African Democratic
Teachers Union (Sadtu) has denied
that schooling was disrupted
during the strike. According to rumours
Sadtu was joining the national
municipal workers strike.
Sadtu chairperson, Xolile Yili said
that the union only met to elect
new leaders. Teachers say the
only thing that might have caused
the misunderstanding was that
some classes were cancelled as a
number of teachers were attending
the meeting. – ZIMKHITHA MBUNGE
Correction
In an article covering the sentencing
of the paedophile, Herbert
Doyle, we incorrectly reported
the name of the magistrate. His
correct name and title is Senior
Regional Court Magistrate, Maziwonke
Dunywa. We also incorrectly
reported that the defence
attorney had “openly disagreed
with the magistrate”. He was in
fact summarising his argument
in regards to the appeal.
Who’s cleaning up their act
KWANELE BUTANA AND MATEDI MOTHIBE
The South African Municipal
Workers Union (Samwu) is
calling for its members to stop
buying from a local supermarket following
allegations that the store’s
management hired people to clean
the streets. Since Monday, the irate
municipal workers have been upturning
rubbish bins and tearing
open uncollected bags of rubbish
and strewing its contents all over
town.
Wandisile Bikitsha, local Samwu
chairperson told the striking workers
yesterday to stop buying from
Pick n Pay and accused the store’s
management of taking the workers’
problems into their own hands.
“We have been told the managers at
Pick n Pay hired casuals to clean the
streets,” he said.
However, Pick n Pay manager
Jon Campbell, denied that the store
hired anyone to clean up. “We [the
management] did it ourselves and
some members of our staff joined in,
we did not hire anybody,” he said.
Campbell emphasised that his
store was not involved in the strike
in any way and that the store’s managers
merely responded to a call
from other businesses to help with
the cleaning. He added that the
managers acted out of concern for
the community regarding the health
hazards posed by rotting rubbish lying
around everywhere.
Bikitsha has accused local members
of Independent Municipal Allied
Trade Union (Imatu) who work for
Makana Municipality of “just sitting
in their offices” while Samwu workers
go on strike. This was made even
more obvious when Imatu’s provincial
leadership marched alongside
the workers at the march in Port
Elizabeth on Monday. He assured
the workers that contrary to rumours
that Imatu is likely to accept
the offer tabled by the South African
Local Government Association (Salga),
Samwu is insisting on a 15% increase
in salaries across the board.
“We want to make sure that Imatu
doesn’t survive in Makana Municipality,”
he added.
According to Lindelwa Faltein,
Makana Samwu secretary, Salga had
upped their offer to 13%, with 11.5%
effected immediately (which means
the minimum wage would be R3 850
per month) and the other 1.5% next
January – which would up the minimum
wage to R4 000 per month. “We
want the whole 13% to come into effect
immediately,” she said.
For the major part of the week
scores of chanting Samwu members
gathered and danced in front of municipal
departments where some of
their colleagues were still at work.
Faltein explained to Grocott’s Mail
that the union temporarily removed
some of their members from their
duties so that only “skeletal staff”
was left to run the municipality’s essential
services.
She argued that this was in line
with the minimum service agreement
the union signed with the
municipality which provides for the
union to leave the municipality with
50% of the staff complement to run
its essential services such as water
part of the national Samwu strike. Photo: Steven Lang
and primary health clinics.
Curtis Sahd, a Computer Science
masters student at Rhodes University,
said: “It sends shivers down
my spine if the action were to be
prolonged, let the workers be given
what they deserve as long as it is not
ridiculous and let there be no further
delay.”
A Hillsview resident, Luthando
Heshu says “As long as there is no
disruptions to electricity or water
supply, I will sympathise with the
worker’s strike for better salaries,
but not their disruptive actions.”
Faltein added that the union was
satisfied that the implementation of
the job evaluation system known as
wage curves was no longer part of
the negotiations.
This follows after the workers
demanded that the matter be handled
separately from the ongoing
negotiations.
Imatu representative Phillip
Gordons refused to comment but
promised to get back to Grocott’s
Mail after consulting with the union’s
regional spokesperson.
While police spokesperson Milanda
Coetzer conceded that the
strike has been characterised by
“excessive littering” of the streets,
she said the local police have contained
the situation so well that no
serious crimes such as damage to
property have taken place.
“The SAPS has focused on containing
this situation and focused policing
on serious crimes for example
damage to property,” she explained.
“We remain committed to ensure the
safety and security of all citizens of
Grahamstown.”
More medical waste found at dumpster
cal waste comes as there are many
medical institutions in Grahamstown
which it may be traced back to.
Ranuga said, “I might know very
little about medicine but I do know
that this could be dangerous.” The
drips are smelly, they should have
been disposed of properly.”
A resident (who wishes to remain
anonymous) expressed his concern,
“It is sad to see the state that Grahamstown
has turned into, very few
people care about the environment
we live in.”
Earlier this month medical waste
was found near a dump in Extension
6 in Grahamstown East. The used
medical equipment included drips,
syringes and respiratory equipment.
No charges have been made and it
is still not known where the medical
waste came from.
The assistant director of Primary
Health Care, Lungiswa Somyalo said,
“The improper disposal of medical
waste is not taken lightly because it is
an important function in medical institutions.
The Department of Health
has gone to lengths to make sure that
legal precautions of the disposal of
medical waste is properly followed.”
This raises a major concern for
the effectiveness of enviromental
awareness in the community. Local
GP, Dr Rudi Marx says, “Dumping
of medical waste is absolutely illegal,
there is a special medical waste sharp
system that all medical waste should
be disposed in as well as companies
that deal strictly with medical waste.”
“There
and they should
town,” said a business owner
in High Street.
The streets of Grahamstown
erupted into chaos
yesterday when striking municipal
workers left a trail of
rubbish in their wake. But late
afternoon two groups got together
to clean up.
The first group, made up
of people from three local
businesses, started at lunch
time and hired casual workers
to clean up High Street.
The second group, both residents
and businesspeople,
started volunteering at 4pm
in the afternoon. A business
owner in High Street who was
part of the clean up said, “I
will be sharing costs to pay
the casual workers with the
other businesses who are part
of this clean up.” When asked
why he decided to join in the
clean-up, he said, “The garbage
is obstructing the flow of
traffic and the opening of the
bags created a huge stench
of rotten garbage making it
a health hazard.” One of the
businesses brought its own
employees to help with the
clean up.
The group of volunteers
assembled at Drostdy Arch in
DUE to the nationwide municipal
strike a precedent
has been set by irate workers
strewing refuse around
in the streets. On Wednesday,
the major roads in Grahamstown
were covered in litter.
Jeanette Toni, the manager
at Kentucky Fried Chicken
on Bathurst Street says that
business has been severely
affected by this health hazard.
“Things are not looking
good outside our establishment,
last night customers
had to park in front of Frontier
Country Hotel and others left,
because there was garbage
right in front of the establishment
and that affects the business.”
Businesses such as Fruit
and Veg City and Gino's restaurant
have employed private
companies to come and
clean up. However, they agree
that throwing rubbish around
on the streets undermines the
rights of the public. “We support
the workers' strike, but
the way they express themselves
undermines the support
of the public, it is unacceptable,”
said Clint Young the
manager at Fruit and Veg City.
Alan Page, a manager at Spur
steak ranch in High Street
agrees with Young and said
they have been disposing of
their rubbish themselves, but
“empting bins on the streets is
not good for the town”.
Bathurst, High Street
and Beaufort Street were
hit the hardest with traffic
to and fro on the N2 in Beaufort
Street being hampered.
Pepper Grove Mall on the
other hand had not been affected
at that stage. However,
an angry group of strikers
headed for the Pepper Grove
Mall yesterday morning,
where they are reported to
have trashed the parking
How do you feel about the municipal strike
With plastic bags blowing everywhere and angry municipal workers shouting for better incomes,
Grahamstown’s streets and pavements are in a mess. Grocott’s Mail reporters Nokulunga Ntantiso,
Bilal Randeree, Rudzani Floyd Musekwa and Vincent Huck went to find out how Grahamstonians
feel about the municipal strike
Bonga Velem
Salesman
The strike is right: The
municipal workers are
rendering services and
they should get what they
deserve. But I do not
support them throwing
rubbish on the streets.
Zoliswa Ngesi
Saleswoman
I support the municipal
strikers because they
work hard. You can’t claim
something you do not
deserve, so they know
what they are doing.
Khawar Shahzad
Businessman
I think that the strike is
justified because food and
everything is expensive
and the cost of living has
gone up. The striking
municipal workers need to
survive also.
Masixole Yaka
They are right: The job
they are doing is too much
themselves.
They have their rights and
whatever they are doing, it
DA builds up its strength
Laura Watermeyer
The Makana Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Democratic
Alliance (DA) was held on Saturday. According to
Jock McConnachie, chairperson of the Makana Branch,
the AGM serves to “set the DA on course for the year ahead”.
In his report, McConnachie discussed the performance of
the branch in the provincial elections. He says the “most gratifying”
of all was the fact that the DA had managed to reduce the
ANC’s majority in Makana from 80% to 60%, which he described
as being “much healthier for democracy and efficiency”. “This
augurs very well for 2011,” he added. The successful mobilisation
of the student vote was also described as a “major contributing
factor” towards the local branch’s excellent performance
in the recent elections.
Michael Whisson, who currently serves on the Makana
Council, also spoke at the AGM. In his report, he called for “deliverance
from the destructive factionalism of the ANC leadership”,
further commenting that the “business of running the
municipality has suffered” as a result of the factionalism.
Whisson concluded saying that the promised delivery can
only be achieved by ensuring that the upward momentum, generated
largely through the efforts of branch members, be sustained
in 2011. In addressing his narrow defeat for the position
of Mayor Whisson lost by one vote to the current mayor, Vumile
Lwana – Whisson said that the DA was not disappointed, “we
had done much better than we could have imagined”. McConnachie
remarked that “Grahamstown and Makana would definitely
have benefited from a mayor like him.”
In addition to the four councillors and the chairperson who
currently serve on the branch committee, seven more individuals
were elected; creating a committee of twelve. McConnachie
was re-elected to serve as chairperson for the branch committee
and aims to continue fulfilling this mandate until the 2011
elections.
Whisson intends to retire from local government following
the 2011 elections but will continue to hold the position of vicechairperson
on the branch committee, ex-officio his position as
head of the Council caucus. A further two deputy vice-chairpersons,
Marcel Boysen and Andrew Hutchinson, were elected.
One of the two could eventually take over as chairperson after
2011. McConnachie said, “These two individuals are major contributors
in their respective spheres and each have excellent
capabilities that we will need in the party.”
In conclusion, McConnachie acknowledged the importance
of creating a Youth and Women’s League within Makana. It was
also noted by those present at the meeting that it was a priority
to establish a township branch before the next elections.
Liberty and Progress
Established 1870
Losing friends
How to win friends and influence people by Dale
Carnegie was one of the most influential self-help
books of the 20th century. It was published in 1937
and to date has sold more than 15 million copies. It would
appear that local members of Samwu have ignored that
seminal guide in favour of a more recent book and film
entitled How to lose friends and alienate people.
On Monday a large number of Grahamstown residents
were sympathetic to Samwu’s demands for wage increases.
Today that number has been slashed thanks to the foolish
behaviour of union members. If you really want to alienate
residents of a town, the quickest and easiest way of doing so
is to throw garbage all over the place. The municipal union
has squandered the sympathy of Grahamstown in exchange
for nothing at all.
At the beginning of the strike local leaders urged members
to be disciplined, and for the first day they were. On
the second day, having seen on TV the mindless vandalism
of unions in other cities, local strikers thought it would be a
good idea to rip open plastic bags and spread rubbish over
the main streets of Grahamstown. By Thursday Samwu
leaders were threatening to “do away” with another union
and physically threatened the local leader of a political
party and the manager of a local supermarket. So much for
union discipline.
Union leadership has sunk to pitifully low levels if the
only argument they can offer is based on intimidation and
vandalism. It shows that these leaders do not have confidence
in the merits of their own arguments.
It was sad to see workers throwing rubbish into the
streets that had been cleaned up the day before by local
businesspeople. It was even worse watching local police and
traffic officers standing by doing nothing at all while acts of
vandalism were happening in front of their eyes. Why did
the police not arrest those who were acting illegally
Why did traffic officers, who are usually eager to pounce
on any individual committing the slightest traffic infringement,
blithely drive past the Samwu members who were
blocking the road with bag loads of rubbish
CAUSING AN UPROAR... This shop located opposite the police station has
recently been granted a trader’s licence. The reader below believes the shop
might sell pornographic material. Photo: Stephen Penney
Pornography
should be banned
Makana Municipality granting a licence
for a porn shop in Grahamstown (see
photograph above) infringes on the
Constitutional right of all individuals.
The value systems upheld by all the
people of the ±80 churches and religious
bodies will be ridiculed – the very moral
fibre of our beliefs will be challenged
and I believe this is a wake up call for
all churches, educational institutes,
mosques, mundils and businesses. Let’s
not cross the fine line of morality into
immorality.
Our innocent children only have to
be exposed once to any pornographic
matter, be it books, videos or DVDs
before that child is robbed of his/her
innocence. The child’s perception about
values and respect for their bodies and
the values of ubuntu (humanity) will be
disturbed and perverted. Our Constitution
which protects and guarantees
the rights of children, will be forever
disrespected. Innocent children will be
mentally, emotionally and physically
robbed of their normal development.
They will be changed forever. The seeds
of a perverted society will be sown,
increasing child abuse, rape and the
rape of infants.
Fathers and mothers, we must
look beyond our selfish sexual desires
and protect the rights of our innocent
children. Let us not commit incest.
Do not allow our husbands’ and wives’
minds and eyes to be perverted. Let not
the moral values of Islam, Christianity,
Hinduism and other religious beliefs be
challenged, mocked and destroyed.
All thinking men and women of
action must unite under one banner to
challenge these perverted lifestyles and
minds. This should be understood by all
councillors, religious bodies, schools and
universities.
Let’s all get together and through
the media, draw up petitions, discuss
this issue among ourselves, speak about
it at religious meetings and protest
against pornography.
She also completed Health
most. She answers forcefully:
According to Kent the government
Her brother Roussouw
also happens to be the manager
of the company she
works for. I asked him what
DANCE TEACHER
he thought about women being
artisans and what sort of
qualities one should have to
excel in this field.
He says, “To be an artisan,
women need to have the right
attitude, because this is a fast
paced field”. He is also working
with government initiatives
for women electricians,
giving women a fair chance to
empower themselves.
He acknowledges that
this world can be difficult for
women, as they have to carry
ladders and other heavy
equipment and sometimes
have to deal with men who
speak coarsely, but “most importantly
you need to have the
right physique and physical
make up”.
It is clear that Kent has
what it takes. This is reflected
in the advice she gives to
young people:
“If you have passion for
a certain field, go for it right
from the start, don’t chop and
change, don’t go looking for
comfortable jobs. If you give
it your best, you will reap the
rewards someday.”
A VERITABLE TROVE... Bongi Mafani stands with just some of the treasures that can be found
in the Grahamstown Hospice shop. Photo: Melissa Dobson
Help Hospice help others
Melissa Dobson
is not enough
darkness to extinguish
the light of “There
one small candle.” This slogan
characterises the work
that Hospice does within the
Grahamstown community,
creating hope for those who
are in need. Hospice provides
care for those who cannot
take care of themselves or
their families because they
are too ill. They aim at enhancing
their quality of life
while allowing those who are
dying to do so with dignity.
The unassuming doorway of
the Hospice shop on Bathurst
Street acts as the gatekeeper
to a bounty of treasure.
This shop is home to
everything from clothes and
books to toasters and electric
blankets. The money that
is raised goes towards the
families Hospice supports.
Bongi Mafani started working
at the shop as a volunteer
and was offered a steady job
three months ago. She says
that it is nice to work and interact
with the community as
well as helping those that are
needy. Yet with all the work
that Hospice does, they are in
desperate need for the Grahamstown
community to help
them to help others.
The Hospice shop relies
on donations to their shop by
the community so anything
and everything you donate is
put to good use.
Keep on knitting... For nearly 15 years, Bill and Mildred Ball have been hosting a
knitting club. Based in Brookshaw Home for the Aged, a group of seven senior knitters
knit strips that Mildred makes into blankets, gloves, socks or beanies for Grahamstown
Hospice. This Wednesday the Balls received two bags filled with strips made by parents of
both the Grahamstown Parents Network (GPN) and Timlin Montessori pre-primary school.
The initiative was launched by Susan Powers, founder of the GPN, who came to personally
deliver the strips. “It is the first time we participated,” she said, “but some of us already
said they will keep on knitting.” Photo: Vincent Huck
Grahamstown Home Industries started up
in 1971 in Hill Street. It was a time of severe
drought in the Eastern Cape and the initiative
to start the shop came from farmers’ wives who
wanted to help support their families through
hard times. The shop was very successful and
moved to Pepper Grove Mall soon after the mall
opened in 1997.
Many Grahamstown residents joined and
there are now 44 members who cook and bake
and serve behind the counter to keep in touch
with customers’ needs.
Home Industries is a co-op and therefore
belongs to all the members. It is bound by the
Local young scientists make waves at expo
Co-operative Act laid down by the government
under the Department of Trade and Industry.
The aim is to provide quality homemade
goods as well as crafts, home grown produce
and flowers. Children and students who are far
from home appreciate the Home Industries’
cakes and biscuits (just like mom makes) and
hard working housewives are glad to be able to
provide a ‘homemade’ meal, be it a delicious pie
(their chicken pies and venison pies are legendary)
or a ready cooked meal from the freezer.
All the chicken and eggs are free range and
the vegetables are locally grown and freshly
The regional finals for the
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists
was held at Rhodes
University Chemistry and
Pharmaceutical Sciences
department last Friday. This
highly contested exposition
saw young scientists from
local schools converge to display
their creative and innovative
scientific projects.
Almost ten schools participated
in this year's expo
and some pupils presented
their projects without any
help from their teachers.
The standard of this year’s
expo has improved from the
previous year, said Dr Bruce
Brown, a senior lecturer
from the Rhodes Education
department. He was pleased
with the overall turnout and
the number of entries they
received from schools. Kate
Cobbing, a science teacher
from St Andrew’s College
who was also one of the judges
said, “The expo was a good
day, I hope the kids had fun.”
Last year's regional gold
medalist and national bronze
winner, Vuyile Sixaba, a
Grade 11 pupil from Nathaniel
Nyaluza High School,
displayed his project entitled
“Photochemical Smog and
Armageddon”. Although he
did not walk away with a medal
this year, he concurred with
Dr Brown that the standard
of the expo has improved. He
expressed his disappointment
with not winning a medal this
year, but comforted himself
saying, “I have the opportunity
to go to national finals. I
have the chance to improve
my project, I had only three
said, “We’re delighted and
happy to sponsor the event.
It gives us an impression to
see these young learners conducting
“The hard part is finding
Science staying alive ‘365
days of the year’
Guy Martin
Grahamstown is on its
way to becoming the
site of the first science
centre in the Eastern Cape.
On Monday a group led by
Scifest Africa held a round table
meeting to plan the future
of the centre.
The initiative will take off
in three months time while
a concept document is being
drawn up, which will come up
with a proposal for funding
the centre. “We have taken
the first step in a very longterm
process by establishing
a working committee,”
said Vera Adams, Director
of Scifest Africa. The working
committee is made up of
roughly a dozen stakeholders,
including Scifest Africa,
Rhodes University, the
Department of Education,
Makana Municipality and
various outreach projects run
by Rhodes.
The idea of creating a science
centre in Grahamstown
was formulated several years
ago by Brian Wilmott, the
former director of Scifest.
“The working committee is
trying to get the process going
again,” Adams affirmed.
Grahamstown is an ideal
choice for a science centre
because of its close proximity
to large towns such as
Port Elizabeth and its many
existing science outreach initiatives,
including the Mobile
Science Laboratory, Albany
Museum, the South African
Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity
(SAIAB) and various
Rhodes University projects.
With the establishment of a
science centre, these will all
be brought together under
one roof.
The plan is to establish
a permanent facility that
provides informal education
in science, technology, engineering
and maths through
interactive exhibits, displays
and programmes. These institutions
are a common sight in
more developed countries – for
example, everyone in the United
Kingdom is within an hour’s
drive from a science centre.
However, there are only twenty
science centres in the whole
of South Africa and not a single
one in the Eastern Cape.
Unlike week-long events
such as Scifest Africa, the science
centre would be open
to everybody throughout the
year and would include workshops
and support groups.
“We need to make science
awareness sustainable to target
learners and teachers 365
days of the year,” Adams said.
She added that the centre
will “have a good impact on
science and maths,” and will
“provide a resource centre
both for teachers and learners
in Grahamstown”.
According to Adams, the
centre will also be “a massive
boost for the local economy,
creating jobs and skills
training.” Some of the job opportunities
include those in
creating and manufacturing
exhibits which may be used
elsewhere. A science centre
in Grahamstown will put
much-needed science education
into the hands of the
people of Grahamstown and
the larger Eastern Cape and
boost its educational facilities.
“This is an exciting opportunity
for Grahamstown,”
said Steve Prevec, the head
of the Geology Department at
Rhodes.
Making a dent in
Grahamstown’s
waste
Lauren Minnie
In keeping with the Integrated Waste Management Plan
(IWMP) for Makana Municipality, the Masihlule Project
was launched on 2 March this year, allowing Grahamstown
residents to have recyclable materials collected from their
homes.
The Masihlule Project is a public/private partnership
between the Department of Social Development, Makana
Municipality and local recycling businesses and aims to reduce
our carbon footprint while helping to employ locals desperately
needing work. Recyclable materials such as paper,
cardboard, tins, plastics, cans, and bottles are placed in an
orange or clear refuse bag, and are collected along with your
other refuse.
Local recycling businesses then pay the Masihlule
Project sorters according to the weight of the materials collected,
plus 10% which goes to the project itself.
“People have responded amazingly well,” says Angie
Thomson of the Masihlule Project, “although there have
been problems”. She says there have been discrepancies between
the number of orange and clear bags that are picked up,
and the number that arrive at the site: “People are at the waste
site looking for things such as tins, and they know they can find
these in the orange bags, so often the bags are torn open and
the contents strewn before we can get to it,” she says.
The project also made huge efforts to encourage recycling
during this year’s National Arts Festival, with recycling
bins available as well as a stall to inform locals of the project.
Three Masihlule employees also to clean up the Village
Green once all the festinos had left town.
Despite the few challenges, Thomson says that they have
“grand plans” and that they “have had incredible support
from the municipality” who cleared the site for the project,
and who supply the site with water and electricity. A new,
larger transformer has also been ordered to allow the site to
operate its more heavy-duty machinery, and they also have
plans to extend their storeroom, allowing them to create office
and ablution facilities. Thomson hopes to collaborate
with the junior Rotarians in attracting more local businesses
and restaurants to work with the project, helping prevent
food waste as well as explaining the benefits of recycling: “It
takes a while to get peoples’ heads right, but there are ways
and means and we just have to improve!” says Thomson
passionately.
SONG BIRDS... Young choristers from CM Vellem Higher Primary School sang their hearts out at their fundraising event
at Noluthando Hall on Sunday. Neatly attired in their school uniforms, both the junior and the senior choirs impressed the
audience, who kept demanding more and offering more money to the school. To add a bit of spice to the show, people
paid money to ‘trick’ the choirs by mixing up the bass, alto and tenor voices in the wrong positions. Some of the audience
requested teachers from the school to also join the choirs on stage. The senior choir’s conductor, Synod Sam, says
the choir which consists of Grades 7, 8 and 9 pupils will be recording an album towards the end of August.
The light touch of God
Human beings are most often impressed
by miracles, success, glamour,
power, heroism and spectacular change.
We tend to look down on the everyday
take-away lives.
But essentially the things that last
are like trees that grow slowly, almost
imperceptably. Relationships that last
forgiveness a chance.
When Jesus was tempted by the
devil in the desert (Matthew 4), in a way
it was all about the option to use (divine)
force to change the world. To use miracles.
To use his omnipotence in a heavyhanded
way.
Yet each of the three times Jesus refrains
from that alluring option. Instead,
ECSTATIC... Local artist
Nyaniso Lindi celebrates
winning an Absa L'Atelier
Art Award. Here Lindi is
pictured alongside the artwork,
a colour reduction
print entitled Tribute to
Noria Mabasa, which won
him any artists' dream – a
three month stay in Paris.
Photo: Laura Watermeyer
Local artist off to Paris
Laura Watermeyer
Nyaniso Lindi, a local
Grahamstown resident,
has won a prestigious
international award
for aspiring artists. Lindi
was selected as the winner
out of more than 100 finalists
produced through rigorous
regional judging rounds,
which took place at galleries
around the country.
Established in 1985, the
Absa L’Atelier Art Awards
provides an opportunity for
local South African artists to
gain international recognition
as well as develop their
talents abroad. The 35-yearold
artist was awarded the
much coveted second prize,
the Gerard Sekoto Award for
the most promising artist.
This prize comprises of
a three-month sabbatical at
the Cité Internationale des
Arts in Paris, French language
classes, and a national
touring exhibition sponsored
by the French Embassy,
French Institute and Alliance
Française.
The prize includes airfares
and free access to galleries
and museums in Paris,
giving young artists the opportunity
to develop their talents
and gain exposure to the
international art community.
Lindi, who presently
works as a studio attendant
in printmaking at the Department
of Fine Arts at Rhodes
University, has always been
driven by a passion for art
and creativity.
He is currently completing
his Bachelor of Fine Arts
at Rhodes University and
although he may still be a
student, this mature artist
has been around – gaining
entrance into the world of
art through more than his
degree.
He has now been given
the chance to broaden his artistic
repertoire through the
L’Atelier Art Awards. “It is
difficult to say what winning
means to me, I suppose it is
a way of adding value to what
I have been doing over the
years; it will impact on my artistic
expression in terms of
scale and technical ability.”
Lindi has also found inspiration
through the experiences
and challenges he
faces as an emerging artist.
“I find it interesting when
well known artists come over
and work with us locally, Vusi
Khumalo was particularly
inspiring as he is a local artist
who is internationally
renowned.”
Although he acknowledges
the challenge of trying to
balance his artistic ambition
with the theoretical requirements
of his degree, he has
learnt much from the academic
structure his degree
provides. “The students I
work with also inspire me,
I give to them but I also receive.
More than that I learn
about work ethic, with an emphasis
on professionalism.”
The artwork selected
for the exhibition was a colour
reduction print entitled
Tribute to Noria Mabasa.
Lindi based the piece on an
earlier work by the Venda
artist and through this gives
recognition to one of South
Africa's living pioneer artists.
Mabasa is a sculptor
who creates artworks based
on mythology and dreams,
much like Lindi does.
The Rhodes Fine Art
Department also boasts two
previous winners of the Sekoto
Award – Nomusa Makhubu
and Billy Zangewa,
as well as a merit award
by Samkelo Bunu and first
prize by the current acting
head of department,
Dominic Thorburn.

“A
school friend was
a Rhesus baby and
received a blood
transfusion at birth in the
50s,” Anne Warring recalls.
“It saved her life.” Warring
began donating blood in 1978,
before she moved to Grahamstown.
She donated for
the 96th time on Thursday at
Victoria Girls’ High School
The Principal, Victoria Girls’ High School,
P.O. Box 601, Grahamstown, 6140.
Closing date for applications: 17 August 2009.
Starting date: 1 October 2009, or 1 January 2010
Eden Grove at a South African
Blood Services (SANBS)
blood drive at Rhodes University.
According to Liezl Barnard
from the SANBS marketing
department: “Rhodes
is the varsity where most
students are willing to donate
blood.” The SANBS hold
blood drives at Rhodes every
three months, and each time
approximately 200 Rhodes
students and staff donate.
While some choose not to
donate, others are not able to
because of certain medication
such as Roaccutane which
treats acne. Amy Payne is one
of those people who is not permitted
to donate, but says she
“would donate if [she] could”.
Robyn McCormick decided
to give blood for the first
time because of an advertisement
that she had seen
depicting a girl who could
not be operated on because
there was no blood to give her.
Though McCormick admitted
that she was “scared of fainting
afterwards”, Bertie Kommel,
a blood donor and volunteer
staff member, insists that
they have trained nurses for
such incidences.
However, SANBS staff do
warn that “blood donors must
have eaten a balanced meal in
the last four hours before giving
blood, or they might faint
afterwards”. McCormick did
not faint and felt proud afterwards
that her blood could be
used to save someone’s life.
Another student, Thomas
King, is not (per se) proud of
donating blood as he thinks of
it as his duty. “I consider it a
social responsibility,” he says.
“Anyone who can give blood,
should.” Warring agrees, saying
that even though “one percent
of the country donates,
95% might need blood at some
point.” She encourages blood
donation, by saying that “you
never know when you will
need blood – accidents can
happen.”

Traffic circle has residents going in circles
Bilal Randeree
The proposed construction of a traffic circle
at the intersection of Cradock Road,
Worcester and Somerset Streets is being
met with mixed responses from residents in
the area. The intersection has become a high
accident zone due to its dangerous and confusing
design. A traffic circle is expected to take
up to four months to complete and involves
an improvement of raised pedestrian crossings
for scholars from the schools nearby. The
intersection will be renovated in stages and,
while portions of it will be closed to traffic, it
will remain operational during construction.
Bill Sanderson of Aurecon Consulting Engineers
who designed the traffic circle, said
that the entire project is set to cost at least
R3.5-million.
Aurecon was initially approached by St Andrew’s
College because the school is increasingly
concerned for the safety of its scholars
following a series of accidents at the intersection.
Sanderson cautioned that sections of
Worcester Street might be closed during the
construction.
Cherié Wille, communications officer at St
Andrew’s College, said that a fatal accident
had taken place on the corner near the St Andrew’s
chapel last year but no scholars have
been injured in any accidents. Wille said that
residents should keep an eye on the press for
details about alternative routes for motorists
to take while construction is taking place.
“The traffic department has been very helpful
and St Andrew’s College greatly appreciates
their concern and interest in the safety of the
pupils and the community”, she added.
Amina Ebrahim, a student living on Worcester
Street, said that she felt the intersection was
not so much of a problem and a few traffic signals
will be a cheaper solution to the problem.
“They have millions to spend on a traffic
circle, but the streets are filthy because the
workers are not being paid enough.
Perhaps this money can be better spent,”
she said. She blamed reckless drivers for the
accidents and was concerned that often drivers
don’t seem to be familiar with the traffic
rules of a traffic circle, especially over who
has right of way. “I hope that the construction
of the traffic circle does not cause more traffic
problems,” she added.
The construction involves a new Worcester
Street link to Cradock Road and the removal
of the traffic island. The current Pear
Lane link to Cradock Road will be closed and
a new road built opposite Durban Street from
Bedford Street. Residents will be able to view
drawings and raise questions with Jeff Roberts,
the director of Aurecon Consulting Engineers,
who will be at the City Hall on Tuesday,
4 August at 5.30pm for an informative public
meeting.
NEW TRAFFIC CIRCLE AT INTERSECTION
OF CRADOCK, WORCESTER AND
SOMERSET STREETS, GRAHAMSTOWN
A new traffic circle will shortly be constructed at the
above intersection. There will also be a
realignment of the Pear Lane link to Cradock Street,
from its present position to opposite Durban Street.
The intersection of Worcester Street and Cradock
Street will also be realigned.
The reason for this new circle and changes to
existing roads is to improve what is considered a
very dangerous and confusing intersection, improve
the safety of pedestrians and scholars who use the
area and improve traffic flow and safety through the
intersection.
Portions of Worcester Street either side of the
intersection may be closed for periods during the
4 month construction period.
There will be an information meeting on
Tuesday 4 August 2009 at 17h30 at the
Grahamstown City Hall where Aurecon
Consulting Engineers will have drawings
available for viewing and will answer any
questions.
Bad drivers go back to school
Bilal Randeree
Repeat traffic offenders could lose their
licences once the new Administrative
Adjudication Road Traffic Offences
(Aarto) system is implemented next year.
Giuliano Flotman, senior traffic officer in Grahamstown
says the Aarto system, also known
as the de-merit system, aims to improve the
driving habits of all South Africans by penalising
repeat offenders with de-merit points.
Once the threshold of 12 points is reached, a
driver will have his licence suspended for a
period of three months. Points are reduced at
the rate of one point for every three months
in which no additional demerit points are in-
curred. Drivers with suspended licences will
not be able to drive for three months and will
be taken straight to court if caught.
Moreover, drivers who have their licences
suspended three times will then have their licences
cancelled and they will have to retake
the tests in order to obtain a new one.
Officials from the Grahamstown traffic
department attended an intensive training
course in Port Elizabeth this week. The traffic
department said that this is quite a big change
for all local authorities. The system is expected
to be implemented in April next year and will
be used on a national scale.
Flotman explained that the traffic fines will
remain and not all offences will carry de-merit
points. Traffic offences that put other people at
risk will carry de-merit points. Under the current
system, traffic offenses carried different
fines within different jurisdictions and needed
to be paid in the jurisdiction that the fine was
levied. In the future drivers will have the option
of paying fines at banks or other local stores in
any province.
The traffic department said that there will
be extensive monitoring of drivers licences
and roadworthy vehicles under the new system.
Information on the new system and how
it affects drivers will be communicated to the
public before it is implemented.
While all traffic officers will be issued with
hand-held checking devices, the new system
will not automatically exclude bribes being accepted
by corrupt officials.
BIG BUY... JW Auto representative Jacques Victor, left, hands over six brand new vehicles
to Dave Martin purchased by the Rhodes University Transport Department. The vehicles
are three Ford Bantams, one Ford Ranger double cab 4X4, one Ford Ranger single cab
4X4 and a VW Golf 1.4 Tenacity. This is the second biggest number of vehicles sold to
Rhodes in one sale, with the biggest sale being seven vehicles. JW Auto have been the
supplier of vehicles for Rhodes for the last five years and Mazda and Ford cover about
70% of Rhodes’ vehicle purchases. Photo: Michael Lukwe
NEW INITIATIVES... The director of Local Economic Development,
Riana Meiring, discussed the LED’s main objective
during the Makana Business Conference at Makana Resort
on Wednesday. Photo: Melissa Dobson
Local government
and businesses
stand together
MARIA SIBIYA
Local businesses are working together in an effort to im
prove the local economy by joining forces with the govern
ment. Various businesses and stakeholders came together
to present their objectives at the Makana Businesses Conference
at the Makana Resort on Wednesday.
The conference was a formal platform which offered various
businesses the opportunity to share their main objectives and to
gain knowledge on how other sectors operate. Municipal Manag
er, Ntombi Baart, says local businesses have to create initiatives
that will sustain the local economy. “We have to work together to
wards a united local business sector,” she said. She also encour
aged both private and government-owned businesses to build a
coherent relationship with the municipality.
While discussing the role of the Local Economic Develop
ment (LED) within the business sector, LED director Riana
Meiring said that the LED is focusing on establishing partner
ships with the relevant stakeholders. She also said they aim to
create an enabling environment for existing and developing busi
nesses in Makana.
One of the businesses establishing itself in the business sec
tor is the Border Kei Chamber of Commerce from Queenstown
According to the chamber’s LED advisor, Alison Wienekus, the
government should include more local small business within their
initiatives to improve the local economy. “Investment should take
place locally,” she said.
The chamber’s executive director, Les Holbrook said that the
chamber offers mentoring programmes such training for small
medium and macro-enterprises (SMME). He also said that the
chamber will be conducting 2010 training for SMMEs in Septem
ber, so that they can prepare themselves for the Fifa World Cup.
In his address, Makana Mayor Vumile Lwana pointed out
some of the challenges that need to be addressed regarding de
velopments in the local business sector. The challenges he men
tioned include the global economic recession, unemployment
and poverty. He added that local businesses such as construction
companies, should benefit from major tenders.
“We need to involve local businesses in internal business op
portunities,” he said. Some of the private and government busi
ness institutions which were present at the conference include
the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, Iqaud Investment
Incentives, the provincial Department of Trade and Industry
(DTI) and Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA). Quot
ing the Freedom Charter, Lwana said, “the people shall share in
the country’s wealth.”
Snow and rough terrain at
spectacular Rhodes run
Stephen Penney
Two local runners, Kevin
Rafferty and Martin
Bekker, took part in the
Liberty Health Rhodes Trail
Run. The race covers around
52km – half of which is trail
running and the other half on
dirt and sand tracks.
Starting at the town of
Rhodes, the route took athletes
along the Bell River and
into Kloppers Hoek Valley,
crossing the Bell River several
times via causeways and
low-level bridges.
This was followed by an
off-road section along footpaths
and cattle and sheep
trails to Mavis Bank. A steep
1-in-3 ascent took athletes
from the valley to the Lesotho
border checkpoint.
The course then followed
the Lesotho border road
through snow fields and past
the ski slopes of Ben Macdhui,
reaching 3 001 metres above
sea level.
The highest point of the
run lies on this section when
passing Lesotho View at 2
670m above sea level. After
this, the course went onto
Hooggenoeg Ridge, where
there were no footpaths and
athletes had to follow the
ridge line over Hooggenoeg
Point to the next check point.
Athletes ran through terrain
that was extremely uneven
and rough underfoot, with
Mark Fish to host coaching clinic
for Nestlé Milo provincial
champions
Earlier this year Nestlé South Africa, in
conjunction with the South African Schools’
Football Association (Sasfa), kicked off the
Nestlé Milo Champions U13 schools soccer
tournament for the second year.
The tournament is currently taking place
in each of the nine provinces, and the provincial
winner in each province receives R10 000
to invest in their school and a coaching clinic
with Nestlé Milo Brand Ambassador, Mark
Fish. Each of the nine provincial winners
will also undergo a coaching clinic with Fish,
who is the new Thanda Royal Zulu’s coach, in
preparation for the national finals.
The first coaching clinic took place in
Gauteng’s provincial winners’ school, Bree
Primary in Mayfair yesterday. – Grocott’s Mail
Run or cycle at Sunnyvale Farm
hidden rocks and holes. Along
the final stage, the route
dropped from the mountain
plateau into Carlisles Hoek
Valley, dropping sharply by
several hundred metres per
kilometre, before returning to
Rhodes.
Martin Bekker, a member
of Albany Road Runners, finished
58th overall in a time of 6
hours 48 minutes 29 seconds,
while Rafferty, a member of
Grahamstown’s Run/Walk For
Life Athletics Club, finished
62nd overall in 6:53:46.
The overall winner was
Trevor Toerien who finished
in 4:30:50, while the first woman
was Erina du Toit who finished
13th overall in 5:40:29.
“It was an amazing experience
to run at a high altitude
2 600km above sea level and in
Sport in brief
the snow, the whole weekend
in Rhodes village is absolutely
awesome,” adding that it is a
very tough run but spectacular
at the same time. Rafferty
said that the feeding stations
in the mountains were “fantastic
and the people running
the stations make you feel really
special.”
Entry to this race is by
invitation only with a substitution
facility, and the field is
limited to 325 runners for reasons
of safety and logistics. It
can take about five years to
get off the waiting list and be
invited.
Rafferty was lucky enough
to run as a substitute for another
local runner who was
unable to take part. “I look
forward to being able to take
part again one day,” he said.
ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE
RUGBY
vs Marlow Agricultural School
1 st XV match report
From the kick-off it was evident that Marlow
knew they had to slow the game down as much
as possible. They managed to do this quite efficiently
with their strong mid-field and rangy
loose forwards.
Marlow got off to a good start and put St
Andrew’s under pressure in their own half with
good kicking and solid defending. They were
able to convert this pressure into points and
were up by 13 points after 12 minutes of play.
The St Andrew’s side never dropped their
heads and played with great courage but were
unable to build up enough pressure from the
possession. As a result the Marlow defense
was never stretched much in the first half and
the half time score was 3 –13. In the second
half St Andrew’s had more possession and
spent time in Marlow’s territory, but were still unable
to build enough phases to get the Marlow
defense scrambling.
A St Andrew’s solitary try came off a set
move early in the second half where Grant Macdonald
used his fancy footwork to dazzle his opponents
and then win the footrace to the line.
Points scorers: Dale Austin – 1 penalty,
Grant Macdonald – 1 try, Ian Herold – 1 conversions
and 1 penalty.
Results
1sts lost 17–13, 2nds lost 23–8, 3rds lost
HOCKEY
1st team vs Victoria Park
St Andrew’s College beat Victoria Park 2-1 in a
hard-fought encounter with both sides evenly
matched. St Andrew’s allowed Victoria Park’s
top player too much room in the first half and
he managed to weave his way through the St
Andrew’s defense, scoring the first goal of the
match. St Andrew’s were more successful in
the second half and came back strongly, scoring
twice to win the game 2-1.
1st team vs Oakhill (Knysna)
Oakhill, on an Eastern Cape tour, proved tricky
to play against in the first half. They tended
to move all play into the middle channel and
put all 11 players behind the ball in defense.
Because of the congestion around the circle
and in the 25 St Andrew’s only managed to
score once. In the second half St Andrew’s
changed strategy and moved the ball around
the back and attacked down the flanks. This
spread their players and St Andrew’s managed
to score five more goals, winning 6-0.
DSG SPORT
HOCKEY
The DSG 1st team had an action packed weekend
of hockey. Herschel Girls School (now
headed by Bruce Probyn, former head of the
DSG) sent three teams through to Grahamstown,
U16A, 2nds and 1sts.
The 1st XI match was the match of the day,
played at 7pm on a very cold Friday evening.
Neither the weather nor the time dampened
the spirit with the whole school supporting.
From the onset it was a tight match that saw
both sides penetrating the oppositions circle
and creating scoring opportunities. It was DSG
that went a goal up before half time. Herschel
came out fighting in the second half, eventually
scoring. DSG gained most of the possession
but could not capitalise, ending in a 1-1 draw.
The DSG 1st team then took on Pearson
on Saturday morning. DSG had a very slow first
half and went down 2-0 early in the game with
Meyer creating two great goals for Pearson. DSG
came out fighting following the half time break
and managed to take hold of the game. Possession
and determination resulted in 3 good
goals, two field goals from Micah Steytler and
one short corner goal putting DSG 3-2 up at the
end of play. On Saturday afternoon Oakhill from
Knysna arrived to play. Oakhill have not had a
strong side in the past so it was decided that a
DSG ‘stayers’ team would play – a team without
matrics. A good game of hockey was played with
DSG holding most of the possession, scoring
two goals before the end of play.
Top Grahamstown extreme sportsman, Bradley
Stephenson will leave for Australia on
6 August where he will train with the American
Moguls team and compete in the Australia New
Zealand Continental Cup where he is hoping to earn
enough points to be able to enter the World Cup in
Europe in December. This will then make him eligible
to be selected for the Winter Olympics.
Graeme College trounce
Portsmouth
Lolo Tali
Graeme College second rugby
team defeated Portsmouth
Grammar School by 36 points
to 24 at Somerset Field yesterday.
The team acquitted themselves
reasonably well against
the visiting side.
For the first few minutes,
play was concentrated on the
Graeme half as the visitors
applied pressure. The first try,
however, came from Graeme
winger Jono Nunn who made
a brilliant solo run from his
side of the field to dot under the
poles 12 minutes into the game.
Portsmouth Grammar school
responded with a try from their
scrum-half Tom Brooks in the
28 minute.The teams were
level at 7-7.
Wandile Lupuwana, a
Graeme hooker, scored a try
which put his side ahead by 12
points to seven. Portsmouth
clawed their way back via a
penalty which put the score
at 17-10 after the home side
player Lee Mapaling brushes off an attempt at a tackle from
his Portsmouth Grammar School opponent.
Stephenson finished his June exams at Rhodes
University before working and training at Tiffindell
until last weekend when he competed in the King’s
Cup snowboarding and skiing event at Afriski, a ski
resort in Lesotho.
While there were no events offered in which he
specialises, he entered the alpine racing events –
slalom skiing and snowboarding – for fun. He made
it through to the finals of the snowboarding slalom
and lost to his coach, Alex Heath, by a short distance.
scored another try by Lee
Maphaleng. Both Nunn and
Maphaleng scored one try to
cap their day with a brace for
themselves. At the final whistle,
Graeme were victorious.
Portsmouth are scheduled to
travel to Port Elizabeth where
they were expected to play a
number of matches.
Heath has taken part in the past three Olympics in
the slalom event, which is his speciality. Stephenson
also gave a demonstration of freestyle skiing for the
crowd, which was shown on the news on Sunday
evening. In between taking part in various competitions
this year, Stephenson will complete the academic
year at Rhodes. While his attempt at making
the Winter Olympics is still a long way off he says he
is highly motivated to make the Olympics and says
his chances of making it “look good”.
