Alumni <strong>Episcopal</strong>’s New Chapel Showcased at Cooper- Hewitt National Design Museum This fall, the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum presented “Piranesi as Designer,” an exhibition displaying Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s full range and influence as a designer of architecture, interiors and furnishings. The work of Robert Venturi ’44 was featured in the exhibit, specifically his renderings of the chapel for <strong>Episcopal</strong>’s new campus. Additionally, Robert participated in a panel discussion with fellow renowned architects for a discussion about the influence of Piranesi’s work on their own designs. Several EA alumni and faculty traveled to New York for a private viewing of the exhibit and to listen to the panel discussion. Reunion Celebrations Class of 2007 – 1st Reunion Members of the Class of 2007 celebrated their first reunion over Thanksgiving break. Class of 2002 – 5th Reunion The Class of 2002 broke 5th Reunion records this fall when it celebrated with more than 60 classmates at Mad River in Old City Philadelphia. The Reunion Committee (pictured below) worked hard through the summer and early fall to track down classmates, spread the word about the party, and organize a spirited reunion over Thanksgiving weekend. 1997 2007 Class of 1997 – 10th Reunion More than 50 members of the Class of 1997 celebrated their 10th Reunion in Center City, Philadelphia this November. Classmates traveled from all over to catch up and celebrate! Many thanks to the Reunion Committee – Dan O’Donnell, Kellen Heckscher, Nick Sommer, Bob Serpente, Chas Peruto, Sam Brown, and James Rich for helping to spread the word to classmates. A special thanks to Drew (Calder) Long for organizing a great event at Tir Na Nog. 2002 5th Reunion Committee: Adam Murray, Beth Randolph, Tim Mahoney, Caitlin McKenna, Drew Evans, and Kevin Dugan. Keon Smith ’97 After years of working with young men with behavioral and/or mental health problems, Keon Smith ’97 found himself at a crossroads. Since receiving his degree in Business Marketing from Temple University, Keon has done his share of promotional work for businesses and special events, while working full time in the mental health field. Circumstances forced Keon to reexamine where he applied his energies, and he is now committed to following his dream: supporting himself and his passion for helping other people by writing, recording, and performing Hip Hop music. Unlike a lot of music that one can download today from iTunes and the like, Keon’s songs are aimed at reaching lost souls, and as he puts it, bringing “ a little hope into their life by shedding light over such a dark city.” The good news for Keon is that in today’s world, a struggling artist can actually find an audience without being signed by a major label. The internet has provided the perfect avenue for independent musicians to reach the public. Keon’s music has been played on local radio stations, but he is still in need of the kind of backing that will allow him to afford the basic equipment required to record and distribute his songs digitally. If what goes around really does come around, and at EA we like to think it does, there is an impresario in the wings just waiting to help Keon accomplish his dream. winter 2008 21
