Middle School Junior Honors Art
Students Visit Renior Exhibit
The Middle School Junior Honors Art class visited the Philadelphia Art Museum
to explore the Renoir Landscape exhibition this fall. The Junior Honors
Art program is available to students earning an A- or higher in Middle
School Art and who have demonstrated a serious interest in refining their artistic
skills. The fall term is devoted to studying drawing, painting, and design and the
Renoir exhibit nicely complemented their in-class learning.
LaPalombara Selected for Philly
Grammy Jazz Band
Zoe LaPalombara ’09 has been
selected to play second tenor
saxophone in the Philadelphia
High School All Star Grammy
Jazz band. As part of this elite ensemble,
Zoe will rehearse and perform locally
with the band and is competing for a seat
in the national Grammy band.
The Recording Academy (the institution
that awards the Grammys)
sponsors several regional All-Star high
school jazz bands in major metropolitan
areas around the country including Philadelphia,
Atlanta, New York, and Los
Angeles. The students selected to these
ensembles are automatically considered
for one national all-star band (about 17 musicians) that assembles for 10 days in
Los Angeles. The typical experience includes recording sessions at Capitol Studios,
live performances with legendary jazz artists, conferences with music industry professionals,
a ticket to the 2008 Grammy Awards, and a performance at the Grammy
Celebration post-party.
Afternoon Arts Program
Launches Next Fall
For more than eight years, Episcopal has
been preparing for its move to Newtown
Square. The new campus will provide
unprecedented opportunities to create
community, and more importantly, allow
teachers to do their very best work. No
greater improvement will be seen than
in the arts, where the facilities will be
unmatched. Students will benefit from
EA’s incredible faculty and also from our
ability to expand our arts offerings in
every discipline. As such, we will launch
the Afternoon Arts program for our 3rd
through 5th grade students. Staffed by
Episcopal faculty members, the program
provides an additional block of dedicated
arts instruction in all disciplines.
The program will expand in size and
scope as interests and needs change and
it is the first of its kind in the Philadelphia
region. Episcopal believes in providing
the very best possible education and
programming for all of our students.
The Afternoon Arts program fulfills
this commitment and will provide our
students with some of the best instruction
in the area. More importantly, our
students will be able to explore their
interests and talents in studio art, theater
art, and music at an entirely new level.
This will help them discover who they are
as creative and critical thinkers and will
allow them to develop an appreciation for
the arts.
We are incredibly excited to provide this
opportunity to our students and families
and the following information provides
details on exactly how the program
will work and on the initial courses
that will be offered.
Initial program offerings
include Puppetry, 2-D Design,
Woodworking, Instrumental
Music, Chorus, Scene Study,
and Improvisation.
