her original ensemble composition, “First Flight.” Chloe will play along with percussionists
The Yamaha Music Education System offers six music courses for children between the
ages of three and ten. Classes are held weekly, covering everything from listening skills to
keyboard performance. The program began in the mid-1950s in Japan under the direction of Mr.
Genichi Kawakami, President of Nippon-Gakki Company, Ltd. (today’s Yamaha Corporation).
Mr. Kawakami believed his company was responsible not only for making a quality product, but
also for teaching customers how to use it. Consequently, he established the non-profit Yamaha
Music Foundation (YMF) in 1966 for the purpose of developing and promoting music education
and music popularization activities internationally.
YMF guides the worldwide development of the Yamaha Music Education System and
TRUE TOUCH: YAMAHA ARIUS YDP-C71PE CONSOLE DIGITAL PIANO
FEELS LIKE THE REAL DEAL
-Luxurious Polished Ebony Finish Makes New Yamaha Digital Piano Look As Good As It Feels-
BUENA PARK, Calif.— Yamaha launches the Arius YDP-C71PE Console Digital Piano at
Winter NAMM 2012. Ideal for home use as a practice piano, it offers stunning looks, highquality
sound and a key action capable of building proper finger technique for playing on an
acoustic grand piano.
Geared toward adult intermediate players to advanced
hobbyists, the YDP-C71PE’s high-quality sound and
Graded Hammer (GH) action makes it ideal as a
practice piano while also built to handle even heavier
use at institutions. Plus, the elegant new Polished Ebony
finish makes it attractive for houses of worship.
“Take one look at any acoustic piano store and it’s clear
that the traditional color for pianos – black – continues to be the most popular,” says Yamaha
Digital Piano Marketing Manager Dane Madsen. “With its Polished Ebony finish, the C71PE
delivers that classic look that so many piano buyers seek.”
The Yamaha Arius YDP-C71PE provides true piano touch and tone in a luxurious, Polished
Ebony cabinet. Whether you're practicing or performing, the Graded Hammer (GH) keyboard
provides realistic piano touch. Using Yamaha's AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling, the YDP-
C71PE delivers authentic and expressive piano tone. The damper pedal features a half-damper
effect, which provides different levels of sustain for acoustic piano realism found only in a
Yamaha. A two-track song recorder captures musical ideas and is also ideal for practicing --
using one hand at a time or both -- with the built-in recordings of selections from the standard
piano repertoire. Dual headphone jacks allow two people to sit at the instrument and play,
practice or teach in privacy.
“A great feature of the YDP-C71PE is the ability to mute either hand of the 50 preset piano
songs,” adds Digital Piano Product Manager Nate Tschetter. “This lets you practice each hand
independently at your own tempo until you're ready to put them both together - a practice
YAMAHA’S MOST AFFORDABLE PERFORMANCE REPRODUCING GRAND PIANO:
THE DISKLAVIER DGB1KE3 CLASSIC
-Available Exclusively In the North American Market,
New Model Provides Lower Cost Entry Level Disklavier Option-
ANAHEIM, Calif.— At Winter NAMM 2012, Yamaha introduces the most affordable addition
to its popular line of Disklavier performance reproducing pianos, the DGB1KE3 Classic.
Available exclusively in the North American market, the new model expands options for
potential entry-level Disklavier owners.
Making this entry-level model even more affordable, the
new model features an innovative “Damper Drive System”
designed specifically for the instrument. This gives the
DGB1KE3 Classic the ability to have the same range of
damper effects as a standard Disklavier by detecting and
recording its damper motion continuously and directly
lifting the dampers. This enables playback of recorded
performances that can include half-pedal effects without
physically moving the pedals.
Like all Disklavier models, it features recording capability. Available in a high-gloss, polished
ebony finish, the DGB1KE3 Classic also includes a 20-watt amplified speaker.
The original DGB1KE3 standard model offers an enhanced set of features, including two, 20watt
amplified speakers and a “50 Greats for the Piano” music book. Bundled with Zenph
software (Internet MIDI, Home Concert Xtreme, Re-Perform), the DGB1KE3 standard is also
available in three different finishes: polished ebony, polished mahogany and polished American
walnut.
Equipped with 128MB of internal memory, all DGB1KE3 pianos (Classic and standard) feature
a sleek control unit with an integrated digital tone generator that can recreate nearly 700
instrumental voices. PC, MIDI and AUX connections offer easy plug-and-play access to a world
of external enhancements, from audio equipment and MIDI devices to personal computers and
the Internet. The Internet Direct Connection (IDC) feature allows users to connect their
10 of 10

Disklavier directly to the Internet, where they choose from more than 20 music channels on
DisklavierRadio or even receive product updates.
“Yamaha continually evolves its products to keep pace with the market,” says Jim Levesque,
Disklavier Marketing Manager, Yamaha Corporation of America. “This model retains most of
the coveted features of the Disklavier that users seek. However, by foregoing the moving pedals
in playback mode, we’re able to offer this instrument at a much more comfortable price point for
many potential customers.”
The PianoSmart system intelligently synchronizes Disklavier recording and playback with the
operation of the built-in CD player so users can record piano or electronic instrumental tracks
while listening to their favorite CDs, and play them back in perfect combination with the original
recordings. In essence, pianists can play right along with their favorite bands, symphonies and
artists, then play back their recordings and listen to their ‘live’ performance with the pros.
All DGB1KE3 models also synchronize recording and playback with external devices such as
multi-track recording equipment and video cameras. These features enable pianists, families and
educators to create audio/visual records of any performance, complete with “live” Disklavier
acoustic piano playback, audio instrumentals and vocals, and full-motion video – all as one
integrated presentation. They also allow creative musicians to collaborate in ways previously
unimaginable. The Series also features SmartKey, a technology that allows users to play the
piano by guiding them through songs, note by note, while adding professional embellishment.
The DGB1KE3 Classic is slated to ship in Summer 2012.
YAMAHA BUNDLES ALL DISKLAVIER MODELS WITH
GROUNDBREAKING ZENPH SOFTWARE PRODUCTS
—Innovative Software Brings Intelligent Accompaniment,
Advanced Editing and Groundbreaking Distance Learning Capabilities To
The World’s Most Popular Reproducing Piano—
ANAHEIM, Calif. —Showcasing the unlimited potential of the world’s most advanced
performance reproducing piano, Yamaha has bundled its Disklavier and Disklavier PRO models
with Mac and Windows versions of groundbreaking Zenph software products, including:
• Home Concert Xtreme: an award-winning, interactive learning and performing
environment that provides intelligent accompaniment that actually follows the soloist—
slowing down, speeding up and getting softer and louder in a musically-coordinated fashion.
• RePerform: a piano-focused MIDI editor that works with files from all models of Yamaha
Disklavier and Disklavier PRO pianos. Unlike typical MIDI editing software, RePerform
enables high-resolution editing and is the first commercial product that understands the
musical nuances of the highly complex and interwoven MIDI files produced by the
Disklavier PRO.
• Internet MIDI: a software program that connects two Disklaviers or other MIDI
instruments via the Internet for real-time teaching and performance.
The Zenph software integrates seamlessly with the core Disklavier technology, providing general
consumers, as well as academic institutions, unprecedented interactive and distance-learning
capabilities from the piano. A Zenph representative will be in the Yamaha Keyboard Division
exhibit to demonstrate the software.
The inclusion of this software cements a recent alliance by the two companies, which look
forward to strategic product development and marketing collaborations in the future.
“The Disklavier has earned a solid reputation as both a fine instrument and technological marvel
over the years,” said Jim Levesque, Disklavier Marketing Manager, Yamaha Corporation of
America. “At the same time, Zenph is unparalleled when it comes to developing software that
unleashes the power of our instrument’s interactive and distance-learning capabilities.”
12 of 12

“Zenph has been one of the most vocal industry advocates of the groundbreaking Disklavier
PRO and Disklavier lines,” added John Q. Walker, CEO and Founder, Zenph Sound
Innovations.“Our commitment to these technologically-superior instruments is demonstrated by
our use of them to create award-winning re-performances. Our RePerform software, for example,
was developed to let users take advantage of the Disklavier PRO’s nuanced capabilities as well
as work with MIDI files from any Disklavier.”
The Disklavier is a modern day computerized “reproducing” piano that was first introduced in
the United States in 1987. The instrument incorporates a system of solenoids (powerful magnets)
and optical sensors connected via LEDs that make the keys and pedals move up and down,
recreating a performance.
According to Levesque, the Disklavier has come to represent the pinnacle of reproducing piano
technology, and, for the past consecutive 10 years, has taken the top honor of “Product of the
Year” in the Musical Merchandise Review (MMR) Magazine Dealer's Choice Awards. It was
bestowed with the Frances Clark Keyboard Pedagogy Award in 2006, an award that was also
presented to Zenph’s Home Concert Xtreme software in 2010.
John Q. Walker and the Zenph team saw the potential of the instrument early on. For the past 8
years, he and his entrepreneurial company have pioneered a fundamentally new method of
encoding music as performance data rather than audio, which the Yamaha Disklavier PRO can
play back meticulously, enabling new “re-performances” of audio recordings.
Most recently, the company has accelerated development of its interactive and distance-learning
software for consumers and institutions, made possible in large part through the company’s
acquisition of TimeWarp Technologies and the addition of that company’s CEO, George Litterst
to the Zenph team as Chief Creative Officer and CTO.
The Disklavier/Zenph bundle also includes three high-quality Zenph piano concerto files. These
files contain orchestral accompaniments designed for Zenph’s award-winning score-following
program. Pianists at all levels of proficiency can ‘play along’ with Home Concert Xtreme as they
learn, practice or perform music. In addition, the Disklavier/Zenph bundle includes 200 example
MIDI files from Zenph’s publishing partners, electronic user manuals, and support videos.
families that want to learn to play the keyboard/piano, the keyboard’s USB controller with builtin
SO FAR, YET SO CLOSE: YAMAHA DISKLAVIER
REMOTELIVE DEFIES MUSICAL TIME AND SPACE
Piano Broadcasting Technology Gains Momentum in 2011;
With RemoteLive, ‘The Impossible Is Now Possible’ -
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Thanks to Yamaha Disklavier RemoteLive technology, musical artists,
educators and audiences are connecting in ways previously unimaginable.
RemoteLive enables a pianist to perform live in one
location and have his or her exact keystrokes and pedal
movements transmitted live and in real time to other
networked Disklavier pianos anywhere in the world.
Combining perfectly synchronized video and audio plus
MIDI broadcast from a single location to multiple
locations, Disklavier RemoteLive is redefining how
piano performance and education is shared and experienced.
“This remarkable technology has grown exponentially in the past year,” says Yamaha Disklavier
Marketing Manager Jim Levesque. “The resounding success and popularity of these
performances proves that this technology fulfils a true need in the piano marketplace.
Performances from around the block or around the world can be interactively experienced in
ways previously deemed impossible.”
The first of roughly a dozen events in 2011 was held last January, and featured the renowned
Roberta Flack and Dan Tepfer, who broadcast from Yamaha Artist Services, Inc. in midtown
Manhattan, to the Yamaha exhibit at Winter NAMM 2011 in Anaheim, California. Last April,
pianist extraordinaire Mike Garson performed at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) while a
Disklavier at the Intel® Visionary Conference carried the unique live piano and synchronized
video display, drawing raves from the attendees. A leader in the advancement of teaching and
learning, Intel’s Annual Visionary Conference in Washington, showcases technologies that
enhance education.
17 of 17

Later that same month another RemoteLive demonstration linked performers at The Wild Beast
music pavilion at CalArts with the Yamaha Piano Salon in midtown for an innovative
transcontinental piano concert called Jazz Crossings.
RemoteLive also reproduced performances from major music festivals, including the Newport
Music Festival and the Yamaha National Junior Original Concert in July. Last August, Bruce
Stark demonstrated the transcontinental reach of this incredible technology by performing live in
Japan and broadcasting to Disklavier pianos across the United States.
Pianists Judy Roberts, Robert Glasper and Benny Green, along with saxophonist Greg Fishman,
played a RemoteLive demonstration at the 54 th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September.
The performances were then rebroadcast in October to select locations throughout the country.
When Yamaha launched its Artists In Education program in December at Yamaha’s midtown
piano salon, the event featured a simulcast of a Yamaha Artist Services concert from New York
City featuring a special program of classical and jazz selections. The concert featured five piano
professors from across the country, including Nicolas Roth, Associate Professor of Piano at
Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. An audience of 100 people gathered at West Music in
Des Moines to view Roth’s performance. Yamaha capped off this momentous year with a special
series of “Mike Garson & Friends” Christmas broadcasts, was aired the week before Christmas,
once on Christmas Eve and once on Christmas Day.
Beyond leaving audiences delighted and stunned, the technology has also drawn media attention
from ABC News, Time Magazine, and New York 1 News. Leading piano dealers are likewise
raving about the implications of this extraordinary technology to the piano retail marketplace.
"With RemoteLive, Disklavier owners can enjoy live piano music at home in a whole new way -
it lends a whole new meaning to a dinner party or music gathering, since endless possibilities are
created,” said Michael Chan Williamson, Store Manager of Keyboard Concepts, which
participated in the Newport Music Festival broadcasts. “Dealers need to simply invite prospects
to their store for a demonstration. When the customers experience it, their imagination will run
According to Christopher Guerin, Director of Program Development for Sweetwater Music,
"Our RemoteLive press conference featuring Mike Garson performing in Los Angeles on a
Disklavier here in Fort Wayne was a memorable and effective way to launch our new Yamaha
piano showroom. It was jaw dropping for the people who attended."
“Our demonstration of RemoteLive was an eye-popping experience for the guests that attended
our recent showroom launch event,” said Sara Faust of Faust Harrison Pianos, who was also
impressed by the technology's massive implications for home entertainment and music education.
“It provided a totally genuine, live musical experience, and yet, by means of this extraordinary
technology, it was also a wonder.”
When Yamaha added the legendary pianist Byron Janis to its Artist Roster in November 2011,
the event was marked with a RemoteLive performance carried live to a number of cities,
including Skokie, Illinois. “Even the finest audio system in the world cannot duplicate the
nuances of what a real ‘live’ piano can produce,” commented Jeff Tasch, who received the
performance at Grand Piano Haus. “RemoteLive offers this possibility and much
more. RemoteLive will forever change the way we will listen to and enjoy piano music. It is
truly a remarkable technological breakthrough.”
For his part, Janis, a champion of RemoteLive, stated, “I think the impossible has become
possible. It’s a tremendous step towards many new things. It’s only the beginning.”
Yamaha will hold RemoteLive demonstrations throughout Winter NAMM 2012. Please visit the
booth for details. For more information about RemoteLive, visit Yamaha Corporation of
MANAGE, ARCHIVE AND SHARE PIANO PERFORMANCES WITH
YAMAHA PIANO DIARY APP FOR IPHONE AND IPAD
-Free Application Available for Download at iTunes App Store-
ANAHEIM, Calif.— Yamaha will demonstrate its new, free iPhone/iPad app, “Piano Diary,” at
Winter NAMM 2012. Yamaha developed the app as a tool to both motivate and enhance daily
piano practice and performance by students, intermediate players and advanced hobbyists alike.
Compatible with any MIDI instrument, it’s designed to help users manage, archive and share
piano performances.
Piano Diary runs on the iOS 5 platform and is currently
available for download on the iTunes App Store.
Piano Diary enables users to record performances,
monitor practice time, upload performances to YouTube
and carry their performances anywhere. The App’s
recording functionality lets users record daily
performances for later playback to their keyboard, either
for listening/critiquing or to perform as a duet with
themselves. It also allows easy search of performances
stored in the App by date/time or name. In addition, it stores all performances automatically on
Piano Diary servers in the ‘Cloud,’ ensuring that they can be accessed via any device. A guest
mode is available for those who do not wish to store their recordings to the Piano Diary servers.
To help users monitor practice time, Piano Diary keeps track of important statistics, including
duration of playing and the number of notes played. Players can additionally compare their
practice time to other users of Piano Diary. The App also enables users to add a slideshow of
favorite photos to their music by automatically uploading them as a movie on YouTube to share
with family and friends.
Piano Diary even enables performances to “go portable.”Users can listen to and enjoy their
performances whenever and wherever they are using the Piano Diary software synthesizer on
their iPhone/iPad or via the Internet from shared YouTube movies.
MIX AND MATCH: YAMAHA LAUNCHES NEW DXR POWERED
LOUDSPEAKER AND DXS SUBWOOFER LINE
—Affordable, But Powerful Versions of Critically Acclaimed DSR Speakers—
BUENA PARK, Calif.—With the new Yamaha DXR and DXS powered speaker line, introduced
at Winter NAMM 2012, great performing, high fidelity sound reinforcement has never been so
affordable or easy to use. Offering high-end features in a convenient and economical package,
the new speakers allow for mixing capabilities right on the back panel and innovative use of
advanced DSP to provide extra protection for each component. In the DXR series, FIR-X
tuning derived from Yamaha’s DSR speaker line delivers excellent sound no matter the volume.
Bands, small combos, solo musicians, DJs,
churches, schools and other individuals and
organizations who require top-quality sound
reinforcement will benefit from DXR and DXS
quality, which offers the loudest SPL volume in
its class. The speakers are so advanced that not
only do they offer unique features like a Link function, they also provide DSP assisted EQ
(Dynamic COUNTOUR) that tailors the frequency response when used as floor monitors.
“By exploiting the DSP in these new cabinets, the DXR and DXS sound great right out of the
box,” said John Schauer, Product Manager, Live Sound, Yamaha Pro Audio & Combo Division.
“The FIR-X filtering ensures that these cabinets perform under all circumstances, even at very
high levels.”
The Mixing/LINK feature in the DXR series takes advantage of the three-channel signal inputs
on the units’ back panel, which include XLR, phone and RCA jacks. The signals from these
inputs are mixed inside the DXR unit. Each channel has its own level control and MIC/LINE
switch, allowing users to tweak their settings. The LINK function lets users configure a stereo or
dual-mono system using two DXRs. The DSP protection circuits ensure the smooth functionality
of the speaker, amplifier and power supply units, promoting optimal performance and reliability
without distortion even in challenging environments.
The D-XSUB feature on the DXS subwoofers, a newly developed processing technology
designed exclusively for the subs, dynamically controls the low frequency range. A BOOST
mode provides enhanced punch to the sound and XTENDED LF mode enhances the bottom of
the low frequency range. The selection will depend on the type of applications and musical
genres.
MG MIXER LINE STEPS UP: YAMAHA INTRODUCES
THE MGP16X AND MGP12X
—Premium Performance Analog Mixing Consoles Offer
Class-Leading Sound Quality and Exclusive Features—
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha’s MG Mixer line is known for durability, reliability and value.
Now, live performance venues like clubs, schools, theaters and churches have a new choice, the
premium MGP16X and MGP12X mixers, which will be introduced at Winter NAMM 2012.
High-end features include D-PRE discrete Class A
microphone preamps for superior phase response and
Xpressive EQ using Yamaha’s famous VCM (Virtual
Circuit Modeling) for a more musical sound. Dual
Digital Effects, a multi-effect akin to those found on the
popular MG series mixers, including an SPX block with
reverb, delay and modulation effects and a dedicated REV-X high-density reverb engine, offer
unparalleled flexibility to build complex effects and enhance the sound quality.
The mixers also include a Ducker function, which automatically lowers the level of back- ground
music to accommodate the voice of an announcer coming in on another channel. Another
function, the Leveler, eliminates a common problem by automatically maintaining a consistent
sound volume when playing music from an iPod/iPhone or other audio players, even when the
sound output level differs from song to song. The included USB port, which allows a direct
digital connection to an iPod, iTouch or iPhone, also charges these units.
The useful Stereo Image function narrows the pan balance of the stereo sound source, a feature
useful in restaurants and other spaces where the left and right speakers are positioned at long
distances apart, or when accompaniment sound is sent to the left channel and the vocal sound is
channeled to the right and a more natural stereo image is desired. Mono is also available if
required.
The new MGP series offers a level of audio quality and flexibility unseen in the medium-format
mixer marketplace,” said Wayne Hrabak, Marketing Manager, Live Sound, Yamaha Pro Audio
27 of 27

& Combo Division. “Direct digital iPod and iPhone integration greatly improves fidelity in
playback and allows for the charging and control of various parameters inside the mixers.”
The new premium MGP mixers, constructed of rugged metal chassis, are rack-mountable and
include single-knob compression, internal universal power supply and +48Volt phantom power
for condenser microphones.
THR AMPS FROM YAMAHA:
A NEW ALTERNATIVE FOR GUITARISTS
—Compact, Powerful Units Designed to Be a Guitarist’s Third Amp
Around the House or On the Go—
ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha’s thoroughly unique THR amplifiers represent a completely new
category of never-before seen guitar amp. The first hi-fi stereo units to feature realistic guitar
multi-effects and classic amp modeling, they also function as an exceptional guitar recording
interface. Not only do they sound good, they also look sleek. Though compact, they pack a lot of
power when plugging in an electric guitar, acoustic guitar or bass.
Most guitarists have a stage rig and a smaller practice
amp, but the THR10 and THR5 provide a third
alternative – an attractive amp with a multitude of
capabilities that fits on a coffee table or desk and
provides great sound for the times when a guitarist isn’t
on stage. Fully portable, the battery powered THR amps
feature Yamaha’s exclusive Virtual Circuit Modeling
(VCM) effects, including professional sounding reverb, and realistic tube-like amp response. It
also includes an input for an mp3 player and a USB direct input.
“If I had the THR growing up, I would never have left my house,” said Dennis Webster,
marketing manager, Yamaha Guitars. “To have that incredible stereo sound with Yamaha’s
VCM is a game changer for the personal amplifier business. The THR line-up of personal
amplifiers combines the best of all worlds; sound, functionality, portability.”
The THR represents a new category of guitar amplifier that comes bundled with Cubase AI6
Digital Audio Workstation and offers near-zero latency computer recording. And, when
connected to a computer, it serves as a great-sounding monitor. The hi-fi stereo playback
seamlessly blends with the guitar output so that it sounds like the guitarist is part of the band.
“This is the first amp of its kind and it performs so many functions extremely well,” said
Armando Vega, product manager, Yamaha Guitars. “The THR offers tremendous value and
YAMAHA’S WELL-RECEIVED A-SERIES GUITARS ISSUED IN
BEAR CLAW SPRUCE TOPS
—Bold Look for Limited Edition Releases—
ANAHEIM, CA. — Yamaha’s new handcrafted A-Series acoustic-electric guitars, which have
received excellent reviews in the guitar press, will be issued with Bear Claw Spruce tops. The 50
A3RBC dreadnought and 50 AC3RBC concert shape models are expected to sell out quickly.
Bear Claw Spruce generally features interesting-looking wood grain patterns as opposed to
typical Sitka Spruce tops, where the grain usually runs straight.
Featuring a new look, a new feel and a new sound for Yamaha guitars, the A-Series launches the
company into a previously untapped market segment by providing a professional instrument
designed to be the workhorse of any steel-string guitarist’s arsenal. From the new headstock
design to the touch-of-class rosette and mahogany binding, Yamaha has focused on every detail
to create the feel and playability sought by today’s acoustic-electric guitar player. Featuring a
slim neck profile and a rounded fretboard edge, the A-Series delivers ease and comfort. Yamaha
also increased its traditional string spacing and lowered the action to accommodate today’s
players. In addition, the semi-open pore finish on the necks of the A-Series maintains the wood’s
feel, yet also enhances playability.
Tone is always key to an acoustic electric guitar and Yamaha has overachieved with the A-Series.
Dreadnought and concert shapes are offered in Mahogany back and sides and Rosewood back
and sides. All models feature solid spruce tops and are outfitted with new S.R.T. (Studio
Response Technology) electronics developed by Yamaha.
The new S.R.T. preamp, an exclusive Yamaha technology, incorporates a piezo pickup system
with a built-in microphone modeling technique specific to each guitar model. The S.R.T.
system lets players choose from three different mic settings that can be blended with the piezo
pickup, delivering on the often-elusive dream of providing studio-quality sound while playing
live on stage. In addition, the S.R.T. system’s feedback detector cancels feedback frequencies
in live situations.
“We often hear stories from artists and customers that their first guitar was a Yamaha and now,
with the new A-Series, their next guitar should also be a Yamaha,” said Dennis Webster,
33 of 33

Marketing Manager, Yamaha Guitars. “The new handcrafted A-Series guitars exhibit many firsts
for Yamaha acoustic-electric guitars while delivering an outstanding look, unbelievable tone, and
a comfortable feel. With these incredible guitars, Yamaha will reach new players.”
Armando Vega, Product Manager, Yamaha Guitars, said “this guitar is definitely designed for
frequent performers who require a reliable workhorse that looks great, feels great and sounds
amazing in all applications. The A-Series provides the ultimate performance-level ‘bang-foryour-buck’
guitar by offering quality build and materials, leading edge electronics and a neck
profile that is a thrill to play instead of a chore.”
YAMAHA 01V96i RE-INVENTS THE SMALL FORMAT
DIGITAL STUDIO AND LIVE MIXER
—Industry Standard Workhorse Re-Imagined and Re-Configured
for Optimal Connectivity and Performance—
BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha invented the small format digital mixer when it introduced the
01V in 1998 and subsequently built its legacy with the 01V96 and the 01V96VCM. But today,
the company is re-inventing the concept with the 01V96i digital mixer, which offers one-cable
connection to computers and is perfect for studio, live recording and installation set-ups. Slated
for introduction at Winter NAMM 2012, the new model builds on the proven configuration of its
predecessors by offering USB 2.0 connectivity, new multi-track recording features and improved
sound quality.
With demand growing for multi-track recording in live
sound applications, the 01V96i is up to the task and
features easy multi-track live recording at precise 96kHz
with 16 in/16 out USB audio streaming. The 01V96i
(MSRP: $2,699) includes sophisticated, single-cable
Digital Audio Workstation integration and comes with
Cubase AI6 built-in to make live recording even easier
and it is completely compatible with ProTools, Logic, Performer and Studio One.
In addition to high-performance head amps with 24-bit/96kHz sampling rate and 110dB of
dynamic range, the updated 01V96i incorporates a full suite of the latest pre-installed Virtual
Circuit Modeling (VCM) and REV-X reverbs for a full spectrum of tonal colors, bringing the
richness of analog sound to the digital realm. VCM plug-ins model the actual circuitry of the
original analog effects units, down to the last resistor and capacitator, so whether you’re bringing
vocals to life with a classic Yamaha SPX reverb or giving guitars an atmospheric edge with a
1970’s phaser effect, the 01V96i delivers stunning vintage authenticity.
The board also delivers superior sound quality through the same DSP effects that are found in
Yamaha’s top-of-the-line professional mixers. Studio Manager software provides complete
control over all of the console’s parameters, including the 100mm precision motorized faders, 99
scene memories for instant recall and ease of set-up and fully-configurable, user-defined keys to
35 of 35

help users adapt to any studio or live environment. With 24 analog and digital inputs available
right out of the box, extensive expansion options up to 40 + 20 BUSES configuration are
available with mini-YGDAI (Yamaha General Digital Audio Interface) cards.
“The 01V96i lets you take your entire studio on the road with you,” said Athan Billias, Director
of Marketing, Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio & Combo Division. “The ability to
instantly save and recall every setting on the console via USB will save a lot of time and
YAMAHA: ADVANCING THE ART OF DRUMMING FOR 45 YEARS
—Company Creates Several Industry Standard Products;
Continues Fruitful Collaborations With Musicians—
ANAHEIM, Calif.— Since 1967, Yamaha Drums has set the standard for innovation in the
drumming world. The process of manufacturing drum shells begins with select woods.
Introducing precision processing that combined a staggered diagonal seam with the
Air-Seal System, which puts even pressure on the shell’s inner surface to create a perfectly
round shell with uniform thickness and excellent durability, Yamaha created a revolution
in drum manufacturing.
From there, the company made its mark with the
legendary Recording Custom set, known as the
most recorded drum set in history, which established
a pinnacle in sound and quality. Three years ago,
Yamaha Drums introduced the flagship PHX kit, a
hybrid shell that includes hard, resonant jatoba and
kapur wood never before used in a drum kit. The PHX’s adoption by several of the world’s
great drummers attests to its quality. Since then, Yamaha continues to introduce new products
that excite drummers and music fans, including the Rock Tour, Club Custom and an overhauled
Absolute line. Yamaha even re-designed its hardware to provide increased operability, stability
and durability.
Hardware inventions include the hideaway cymbal boom arm, locking hi-hat clutch, a ball joint
tom mount that rotates 360 degrees and interchangeable pipe diameters to provide maximum
flexibility in hardware set-up. Yamaha high-performance lugs ensure ease of use and the
Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System (YESS) creates a high-resonating shell. At this year’s
NAMM show, Yamaha also introduces the new HexRack II, the lightest, strongest drum rack
in the business.
Of course, Yamaha couldn’t do it alone: the company receives support, input and guidance from
drumming legends and a huge list of well-respected performers and instructors from every genre
of music, including Carter Beauford, Keith Carlock, Billy Cobham, Dave Garibaldi, Roy Haynes,
Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Dafnis Prieto, ?uestlove and Dave Weckl.
its drums, including acoustically engineered designs and the skills of the company’s master
craftsmen,” said David Jewell, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums, Pro Audio & Combo
Division. “With the inspiration of our artists, Yamaha Drums will continue to our mission of
blending new technology with rich history to create incomparable instruments and experiences
far into the future.”
Steinberg releases CMC series of Cubase controllers
—Dedicated modular controller system comprising six slim control units
with pads, knobs and faders that cover aspects of handling Cubase—
HAMBURG, Germany — Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH announces its new CMC
controllers. Dedicated to Steinberg’s Cubase advanced music production system, the six USB-
powered CMC units offer an integrated control solution that provides a desirable degree of
flexibility and configurability.
The CMC controllers are equipped with a combination of control
elements that provide tactile control over certain Cubase functions.
Each unit can be used separately or hooked up together with the
included joint plate, resulting in a control desk that leaves no
wishes unfulfilled.
“The CMC controllers are ultra-portable and the design’s perfect,
but more importantly, the units offer a mind-blowing array of
control options. Without a doubt, the CMCs are the perfect
complement to Cubase, and Nuendo too,” commented Stefan
Schreiber, Steinberg’s product marketing manager for hardware.
The CMC-CH channel controller houses 16 illuminated rubber push-buttons, one rotary encoder
and a touch fader. The multi-colored buttons provide access to VST instrument settings, solo and
mute tracks, bypass EQs, sends and inserts and channel freeze. Eight of the 16 buttons can also
be assigned to a second function. The Channel Select button browses through the entire Cubase
mixer, while the rotary encoder is used for panning. The LED-based touch fader controls the
volume level while displaying the fader position.
The CMC-FD fader controller features four high-precision touch faders with LED-based
metering and solo/mute function. The touch faders offer simultaneous control over four channels
in Cubase. With the Channel Select and Bank Select buttons, users can jump to individual
channels or select entire channel groups in the Cubase mixer. Up to four FD units can be
combined together for 16-channel control.
41 of 41

The CMC-QC quick controller boasts 13 illuminated buttons and eight rotary encoders in three
different modes: EQ, Quick Control and MIDI. In EQ mode, the rotary encoders reflect the
channel EQ controls in Cubase, while the QC mode maps Quick Control capability onto the
encoders for controlling effects and other parameters. The MIDI mode turns the unit into a freely
configurable MIDI controller. Eight of the 13 push-buttons can be assigned to random Cubase
functions. The included CMC-QC editor allows users to adjust MIDI control change parameters
through the computer.
The CMC-PD pad controller features 16 highly responsive backlit pads and one rotary encoder.
The pads change their background color according to the pressure exerted. Depressing the pads
triggers MIDI notes or selects volume response curves. In 4Velocity mode, the pads are used for
easy step recording. The rotary encoder browses sounds and presets in Cubase. The included PD
editor software is used to assign MIDI notes to each pad.
The CMC-TP transport controller houses 17 buttons and a touch slider. The slider allows users to
jog or shuttle through the project, tap in the tempo, scroll, zoom and browse. All major transport
functions, including play, stop, record, cycle, fast forward and rewind, are controlled via the
CMC-TP. Other buttons are used, for example, to insert markers, set the locator range or insert
new tracks. The top four buttons can each be assigned to a second function, for even more
control in Cubase.
The CMC-AI controller highlights Steinberg’s universal AI Knob, together with its ten function
buttons. The AI Knob allows users to control any control element in Cubase by simply moving
the mouse cursor over it. In Volume mode, the AI Knob turns into a high-precision master
volume control whereas in Jog mode, the AI Knob is used to jog through the project. The AI
Knob also doubles as a browse button to search and select presets. The four function buttons can
be assigned to further control parameters.
CMC accessories comprise the CMC Studio Frame 4 and the CMC CC121 Extension Frame.
The CMC Studio Frame 4 is a durable construction for housing up to four CMC units. The CMC
CC121 Extension Frame can hold up to two CMC units and one CC121 controller.
UR28M and UR824 interfaces unveiled
—Steinberg introduces the desktop UR28M interface with 6 inputs and 8 outputs and the
rackmountableUR824 interface with 24 inputs/outputs, both with dspMixFx technology for
DSP-powered, latency-free monitoring—
HAMBURG, Germany — Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH reveals the beginning of its
new range of audio interfaces with USB 2.0 connectivity: the rack-mountable UR824 interface
and the desktop UR28M interface. While the UR28M is shipping as of today, the UR824 will
first be available in November of this year.
With the UR interfaces, Steinberg offers two
professional solutions for musicians and producers.
Both interfaces provide sufficient means of
connectivity, D-Pre microphone preamps plus DSPpowered
reverb and channel strip effects for monitoring
at zero latency.
“The UR pair boasts excellent sound characteristics and provides monitoring mixes at no latency
whatsoever. Consider the UR824 a comprehensive I/O solution and the UR28M an interface and
dedicated monitor controller in one desktop console,” commented Stefan Schreiber, hardware
product marketing manager at Steinberg.
“UR824 and UR28M are the ideal choice for ambitious musicians and producers of project
studios and larger recording facilities,” Schreiber added.
The UR824 features eight Neutrik combo inputs, eight TRS outputs and two pairs of ADAT I/O
Another highlight is the dspMixFx technology powered by Yamaha’s custom-designed SSP2
DSP chip. This offers latency-free monitoring together with the REV-X reverb and the Sweet
Spot Morphing Channel Strip to users of any DAW software. The included dspMixFx DSP
mixer handles all aspects of routing and monitor mixing in one easy-to-navigate interface.
The REV-X featured in the UR824 and UR28M is a complex reverb algorithm developed by
Yamaha. Renowned for its sound quality, the REV-X features three types of reverb effects: Hall,
Room and Plate simulations with reverb time and level control.
The Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strip consists of a sidechain-enabled compressor and a threeband
parametric equalizer, which can be applied to up to eight mono input channels or four
stereo input channels on the UR824 and four mono input channels or two stereo input channels
on the UR28M.
By including Cubase AI 6, a dedicated version of Steinberg’s Cubase advanced music production
system, both UR interfaces provide a full system solution for recording music in studio quality.
BUENA PARK, Calif. — Yamaha Corporation of America updates the popular Power-Lite
Series of bass drums, snares and multi-toms for the first time since the late 1990’s. Debuting at
Winter NAMM 2012, the new 6300 Series now offers expanded options and advanced features
at the same affordable price.
Replacing the 6200 Power-Lite Series, the 6300 Power-
Lite Series is geared towards middle school children
and youth community marching band programs, and
features lighter-weight equipment to accommodate the
average size and strength of children within that age
group. Yamaha’s updated series is easy to tune and uses
ultra-durable, high-end materials to ensure a rich sound
and more vivid musical expression.
“Yamaha continually seeks to improve its products and
this series capitalizes on many of Yamaha’s many impressive percussion innovations,” says Troy
Wollwage, Percussion Manager, Yamaha Band & Orchestral Division. “The 6300 Power-Lite
Series builds on the solid foundation of the previous model to offer remarkable durability,
strength and sound.”
Ideal for musical situations requiring exceptional sound and lightweight design, the Power-Lite
Series Bass Drums feature shallow depths, making them easy to carry. The 9-ply birch-ply shell
is manufactured with Yamaha’s exclusive Air-Seal system to help ensure a warm tone and
includes sound impact strips to provide for improved sound clarity and ease of tuning. With sizes
ranging from 16” – 28”, all 6300 Power-Lite Series Bass Drums also come standard with white
REMO Ambassador bass drumheads.
Offering traditional sound with simple operation, the Power-Lite marching snare drum now
comes in two different sizes, 13x11(MS-6313) and 14x12 (MS-6314). The 6-ply birch-ply shell
is complemented with 1.6mm, triple flange steel rims and zinc alloy lug casings with reinforced
walls and webbing for superior strength, flexibility and portability. It also features Yamaha’s Air
51 of 51

Seal System for a pure, fundamental tone. The snare also features 20-strand, high-carbon steel
wires for a crisp response and bright sound, as well as three protective feet and an ET carrier clip
for easy, quick and secure attachment.
Available in multiple configurations, the 6300 Power-Lite Series Multi-Toms are modeled after
the 8200 Field -Corps Series and uses the same high-strength lug casing and maximum tonal
protection (MTP) cut to provide exceptional sound and resilience. An in-round 6-ply birch-ply
and beech shell tunes clearer and provides a pure fundamental tone, while a 5.4mm steel tension
rod provides easy, consistent tuning without adding unnecessary weight.
as battery packs, hardware cases, practice pads and drum keys, to suit every individual’s
particular needs.
His phenomenal talent led to his first musical tour with vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bobby
Caldwell's band. While he was playing with Caldwell, he met keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who
invited Koz to join him on a tour. He gained even more popularity after touring with Lorber and
caught the attention of pop singer Richard Marx, with whom he toured for 14 months. Other top
musicians that have enlisted Koz's unique skills include Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie
Cole, Celine Dion, Kenny Loggins, U2, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and Vanessa Williams.
The saxophone had become Koz’s “best friend [and] most trusted ally…it enabled me to
communicate feelings that I didn’t have the words for,” he says. In the early 1990s, he decided
that pursuing a solo career would help him communicate those emotions to the world and he
signed with Capitol Records and recorded several noteworthy albums, including the GRAMMY
nominated Saxophonic. Koz remained with Capitol Record for 20 years, but in 2002 went on to
launch his record label, Rendezvous Entertainment.
His latest album, Hello Tomorrow, which debuted at No. 1 on both Billboard’s Top
Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and iTunes’ Jazz Album chart, was named the Best Smooth
Jazz Album of 2010 by iTunes. Produced by Grammy winners John Burk and Marcus Miller, the
album features a diverse army of high-profile guests: Herb Alpert, Jonathan Butler, Brian
Culbertson, Sheila E., Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Keb’ Mo’, Ray Parker, Jr., Lee Ritenour,
Christian Scott and others. An accomplished composer, Mr. Koz wrote most of the 13 tracks
himself.
Koz has offered invaluable input to Yamaha, and has been called upon to test instruments at the
Yamaha Los Angeles Atelier for consistency. After playing 23 seemingly identical YAS-62IIS
saxophones several times each, Mr. Koz noted the exceptional quality of every single instrument,
but identified 15 of the 23 as being uniquely remarkable and professional-gig-ready. Each Dave
Koz Artist Selected instrument has a special oval badge just above the serial number and is
currently for sale along with a signed authenticity card.
Beyond playing the saxophone, Koz serves as a radio personality. On weekdays, he hosts a
national radio show on the Smooth Jazz Radio Network. On weekends, he hosts the
internationally syndicated Dave Koz Radio Show, now in its 15th year in approximately 120
markets. He is also the global ambassador for Starlight Foundation, an organization dedicated to
brightening the lives of sick kids and their families. Mr. Koz also works as an instrumental music
advocate, serving on the board of directors for the GRAMMY Foundation, where he works to
preserve America's cultural legacy and bring music to children in the classrooms.
Mr. Koz also recently partnered with Vinum Cellars, a Napa Valley boutique winery, and Whole
Foods Market to introduce three types of KOZ wines. He is donating all his proceeds from KOZ
wines - available exclusively at Whole Foods Market stores in Southern California, Arizona and
Nevada - to help Starlight continue its vital mission.
YAMAHA EXPANDS ARTIST ROSTER WITH DIVERSE NEW TALENT
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Yamaha Artist Services Indianapolis expands its roster with the
signing of several diverse, gifted and highly accomplished musical artists: trombonists Reggie
Young and David Finlayson, violinist David Ragsdale and crossover classical music sensation
2CELLOS.
“These remarkable musicians enrich our celebrated
artist roster,” said John Wittmann, Director, Artist
Relations, Yamaha Corporation of America. “They each
bring a unique talent and fresh perspective to the music
scene and attract a widely diverse audience. We look
forward to helping each of them build on their unique
contributions through their association with Yamaha.”
2CELLOS is a duo consisting of cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, accomplished musicians
who both have played the cello since childhood. Luka recently completed studies at the Royal
Academy of Music in London, while Stjepan completed his studies at the Royal Northern
College of Music in Manchester. Both members have performed all over the world at renowned
venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Vienna’s Musikverein
and Konzerthaus, and each boasts a slew of first-place prizes in international cello competitions.
Their passionate dueling cellos rendition of Michael Jackson's “Smooth Criminal” became a
near-instant Internet sensation, receiving over five million hits on YouTube in less than three
months. The duo recently launched their debut album featuring unique versions of well-known
rock and pop songs, including “Use Somebody” (Kings of Leon), “The Resistance” (Muse),
“With or Without You” (U2), “Viva La Vida” (Coldplay) and “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
(Nirvana).
Reggie Young (Trombone, Earth Wind & Fire) a Southern California native, began playing
trombone at the ripe age of 12. By the time he was 14, Reggie had already played his first
professional gig with the Henry Grant Big Band featuring Les McCann and had begun studying
privately with world-renowned trombonist George Bohanon. He graduated early from Locke
High School to attend the Los Angeles City College where he was subsequently offered an
opportunity to tour with Ray Charles and his orchestra at just 18-years old. After touring briefly
with Ray Charles, Reggie became music director of several off-Broadway plays in the Los
Angeles area.
Since then, Reggie's trombone artistry has taken him around the world to play for dignitaries,
queens and kings, as well as two presidents of the United States. Reggie has been the trombonist
for the legendary group Earth, Wind & Fire for the past 24 years and has also been an orchestra
member of the hit television show, Dancing with the Stars, since its inception in 2005.
Having been born into a military family in Washington, D.C., David Finlayson (Trombone,
New York Philharmonic) spent much of his early life in many different parts of the world. He
began his music career in Germany at the age of six, where he was first introduced to the piano.
However, he found himself more interested in the trombone by the age of 13 and became an avid
player. In 1972, he joined the University of Michigan School of Music, which helped propel him
into his symphonic career at the Flint Symphony and Toledo Symphony Orchestras.
Shortly after he graduated, David was appointed assistant principal trombonist with the National
Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for six seasons before joining the New York
Philharmonic as a featured soloist and recitalist. David has performed on stages worldwide and
has made appearances on National Public Radio, The Today Show and the National Arts Series.
David is also an active teacher of the arts in New York City and holds positions on the trombone
faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music and Queens College
Aaron Copland School of Music.
David Ragsdale (Violin, Kansas) received his first violin at the tender age of three and has been
playing ever since. David studied under the tutelage of renowned classical teachers throughout
his life, and in 1980, received a scholarship at the University of Tulsa where he studied with
acclaimed instructor Nell Gotkovsky. There, he also played with the Tulsa Philharmonic and
moonlighted as a string arranger, violinist and guitarist at what is now Universal Music and Post
Studios.
After graduating, David toured with Nashville’s Louise Mandrell for four years, followed by a
seven-year stint with legendary rock group, Kansas. During his tenure with the band, he also
