Dear El Carmelo families and staff,
Do you remember your first Rock & Roll concert (Boz Scaggs,
Berkeley Amphitheater). Maybe tonight’s celebration will jog your
memory. Get ready to find your inner rock star and celebrate fun,
friends and taking care of our kids through the PTA!
As you reminisce about any rock concert experiences you have
had, think, too, about the huge importance of the El Carmelo Auction to
the PTA's fundraising efforts that benefit the educational experience of
each and every one of the students at our school. Maybe you have
your own school memories that resonate with the field trips, classroom
technology and myriad educational materials that the PTA provides to
children every year.
While we have fun and enjoy the evening, we also can remember the
activities that our kids enjoyed this year thanks to the combined
generosity of all of the members of the PTA. The class field trips, the
assemblies and many of the great learning tools that our students
benefited from this year were paid for by gifts made to the PTA and
specifically made through last year’s Auction.
This Auction is NOT ONLY a fundraiser for the El Carmelo PTA, but
also an entertaining evening and an opportunity to solidify parent
friendships that will likely last for many years, even after your kids are
in school together. Some of my closest friendships today are with
parents of my daughters’ friends, whom we met when she was in
elementary school.
I hope that you enjoy yourselves at this year's wonderful El Carmelo
Auction.
“Everybody’s a Rock Star”….
Welcome Parents, Teachers, Staff, Alums, and Friends of El Carmelo
to our 36 th Annual “Rock & Roll” Auction. The Auction is the single
largest source of funding for the PTA. With these funds that has
provided among other things: school busses, smart boards, improved
facilities, etc, we can ensure that your child gets the most enriching
education possible.
Just as important as raising money for the School, the Auction serves
a higher purpose….it brings together the entire El Carmelo community
(parents, teachers, staff, alums, and friends of EC) for one special
evening. With many auction items for all ages, the community building
will continue throughout the year. A special gratitude goes out to our
wonderful teachers who all donated an event to the Auction and our
amazing volunteers who tirelessly logged in many hours putting this
wonderful event together---many many thanks.
With so many families of different ethnicities and culture, Alli and I
thought that more than ever we wanted to celebrate our special
community. As you go through the Auction catalog, you will notice that
there are many new events/items, such as mah jong parties, Indianinspired
workouts called “Bombay Jam”, and the “International Dinners
Delivery for 8 Months”, that reflect the “new” El Carmelo. Like the
world of music where rock stars hail from many different parts of the
world and create different types of music, the parents of El Carmelo,
are ethnically diverse and bring their own special talents. But, the one
underlying truth is that “Everybody’s a Rock Star”.
So, for this special night, we encourage you to step out of your comfort
zone and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know and bid on an
event you normally wouldn’t. You’d be surprise at how much fun you
will have and how many wonderful people you’ll meet. Have a great
time bidding at the Live Auction where you can do something that
benefits our children. Remember...it's all for the kids. As Bono of U2
once said, “As a rock star, I have two instincts, I want to have fun, and
I want to change the world. I have a chance to do both”. So, too can
you.
Are you ready to rock and roll!
Auction Rules
There are two ways to bid on a silent auction item. First, place your
sticker with your name and bidder number on the bid sheet and
write your bid amount next to it. Alternatively, you may write your
last name, bidder number and the bid amount on the item bid sheet.
On single winner items, your bid must exceed the previous bid
amount by the increment shown on the bid sheet. The highest
bidder at the close of bidding wins the item.
On multiple winner items, you must increase your bid only when the
number of bids at that price equals the number of winners.
Example: if the bid amount is $25 and the number of winners is 10,
bidder 11 needs to increase the bid amount by the increment shown
on the bid sheet. Bids will be evaluated starting at the highest
amount. If there are more bids at this amount than there are
winners, the item will be awarded to the earliest bidders of that
amount. If there are fewer high bids than there are winners,
additional winners will be selected at the next highest bid amount,
again with the winners being those who made the bid the earliest.
The process will continue until the correct number of winners has
been determined. Note: this process may result in some winners
paying more or less than other winners for the same item. Timing is
everything!
If you want to increase your bid, please cross out your previous bid
to prevent purchasing duplicates of an item and use a new line to
enter your new bid. Please do not simply cross out your
previous bid amount and replace it with a new bid amount.
This process will make it easier to determine who has won the item
and may prevent you from purchasing duplicate items you do not
want. In addition, this process makes it fair for all bidders.
If you want two (2) people to attend on a per-person price, you need
to use two separate lines on the bid sheet to bid twice. When you
make a higher bid on an item that has multiple buyers, make sure
you cross off BOTH of your previous bids and re-enter both bids at
the higher bid amount on separate lines.
Your bid is considered a commitment to pay.
9

All items must be paid in full and removed from the premises on the
night of auction. If you are unable to stay until check-out begins,
please make arrangements for someone to pay and pick up your
items. Absentee bidders who win items will be notified after the
auction and given details on how to pay for their items, as well as
where to pick them up.
You must present your paid receipt to pick up your items. Items
that need to be picked up will be indicated with an “O” under
Location on the receipt.
Payment may be made by check, cash, or credit card (Visa or
MasterCard). Checks made out to “El Carmelo PTA” are preferable
as the entire amount goes to our school. All sales are final. There
are no exchanges or refunds.
Items purchased may have restrictions, which are described in the
catalog. Restrictions cannot be changed and are strictly enforced.
If you purchase an event (party/class/etc.), you will be contacted by
the donor prior to the event. If you purchase a service or getaway,
you will need to contact the donor to arrange a date.
Terms & Conditions
The Auction Committee has made every effort to describe the items
correctly. All sales are final, and items are sold “as is.” There will
be no refunds or exchanges. El Carmelo Elementary School and
the El Carmelo PTA neither warrant nor represent, and shall in no
event be responsible for: the correctness of the description,
genuineness, authorship, provenance, performance by the donor,
condition of the items, or buyer dissatisfaction for any reason. The
item you have purchased is not a PTA sponsored event, function, or
item (“Item”), and is not covered by PTA insurance. You are
participating in or using this Item at your own risk and you may wish
to obtain your own insurance to cover your use of the Item.
Disclaimer of Liability: in no event shall PTA, its officers, members
or volunteers (“PTA”), be liable to you or any other party for any
loss, damage or injury which results from participation in or use of
the Item. In no event shall PTA be liable to you or any other party
for indirect, special or consequential damage including but not
limited to loss of good will, loss of profits, or any other physical or
10

economic loss arising out of your use or lack of use of the item.
It is the responsibility of winners to read all the fine print on their
items to determine any relevant information, including, but not
limited to, expiration dates, blackout dates, exceptions, limitations
or other restrictions, or other instructions stated on certificates and
to make arrangements based on this information. Some of the
items require reservations or other actions in a short time frame.
Please read the descriptions carefully. All details must be arranged
between the bidder and the donor. The Auction Committee has
made an effort to include enough information in the catalog for you
to make decisions about items, but neither guarantees nor warrants
that the information provided is accurate or complete. The
language of gift certificates is controlling. Restaurant and hotel gift
certificates do not include gratuities or anything beyond what is
described. All parties are given as generous donations of the hosts;
we expect them all to be fabulous fun, but we cannot refund any
disappointments.
The stated value of the auction goods and services has been
provided by the donors or estimated by the Auction Committee to
the best of its knowledge. The stated value is an estimate only, and
is not for tax purposes of general value.
My Adventures books are a great way to showcase your
professional designer and brand new print-on-demand
technology, we will turn your child's priceless preschool and
kindergarten art into a coffee table style book and return the
original artwork. And while this book provides a great solution
to the problem of what to do with the growing amounts of art
you've collected, it can be far more than that. Because every
word used in the book is either said or written by your child,
the book captures, through the lens of art, who your child is at
Donkeys and Donuts
Join us as we meet the donkeys that make Barron Park
famous – Perry and Niner. Perry served as the model for
Shrek’s famous sidekick, “Donkey.” Sunday mornings, the
donkeys are the center of attention during their famed park
strolls. Volunteers teach donkey safety and handling. And the
Sunday promenades give the equines a chance to nibble on
Bol Park’s lush green grass while the kids get to pet and stroke
the donkeys. Parents – come and reconnect with El Carmelo
friends while enjoying a cup of coffee and donuts. There will
also be donkey inspired arts and crafts for kids. Please note
that there are no public restrooms at Bol Park, so families
Fresh Organic Peaches
The Noroian family has been growing Elberta and White
Nectar peaches, two heirloom varieties, on their Central Valley
farm since the early 1940s. Most of their certified organic
peaches are sold as purée to yogurt and juice companies
looking for high-quality organic fruit. They do, however, pick a
small quantity to can or eat fresh every summer, and are
offering El Carmelo families the opportunity to buy flats of
peaches. These peaches taste better than anything you can
buy in a grocery store, because they are picked ripe and
delivered to your home during harvest. You'll get a flat of 18-
24 organic heirloom peaches, weighing about 9 pounds.
White nectar peaches ripen in early July; the Elbertas come in
at the end of July/early August. View a short video about the
farm on the Stonyfield Farms website; the Noroians supply
peaches for their YoBaby yogurt: "Growing the Organic
Market" http://www.stonyfield.com/yotube/index.jsp. Winner
arrangements.
