PRESIDENTS REPORT.
We have had two great speakers this month. Kelly Linton
travelled to Canada at Christmas on a Lions Youth Exchange
trip. Minus 40 degree temperatures, great scenery and having a
nice host family are some of the experiences she shared with
the club.
Lion Barry Sanders shared his life journey with us at our last
meeting. He has worked in IT both here and in Australia, from its inception
through to today. As our new Webmaster he is more than qualified. Thanks
Barry.
Welcome to Brian Phillips who transferred to our club from the Hawkes Bay.
The launch of “Gastronomie of Greytown” cookbook was well supported.
Thanks to Linda Kirkland for all her hard book in order to make this all happen.
The youth in our community will benefit greatly from the proceeds of this
cookbook.
This being my last presidential report, I would like to thank the Board and the
Club for your support over the last twelve months. The greatest asset of a club is
its members and we have been fortunate as the membership has grown. Once
again welcome to those who have joined our Club this year.
We have quietly helped the community through our Helping Hand project,
celebrated 40 years of Greytown Lions, rebuilt the Roadsman Hut at
Cobblestones, successfully run the Lake Ferry Beach fishing competition,
helped other organisations to raise funds, donated firewood for fundraising, held
our annual Christmas BBQ as well as taking time out to have a BBQ lunch at
Kawakawa Station, launched “Gastronomie of Greytown” cookbook, helping
children with their reading at Greytown School is another ongoing project and
with the Greytown Lionesses have held another successful Quiz night. This
years proceeds are going to Cobblestones.
Splitting kindling, stacking pea straw and bagging mushroom compost are all
opportunities for Lions to share a laugh or two as we replenish our stocks for
sale.
This is what Lions are all about.
Once again Changeover is here this month. Don’t forget that partners are
welcome.
Keep warm and see you on Tuesday.
Keith
Time for a laugh.
The Bacon Tree
Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert after
crossing into the United States , wandering
aimlessly and starving. They are about to just
lie down and await death when all of a sudden
Luis says.........
"Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell Ees
bacon, I theenk."
"Ees, Luis, eet sure smell like bacon."
With renewed hope they struggle up the next
sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree
loaded with bacon.
There's raw bacon, there's fried bacon, back
bacon, double smoked bacon .... Every
imaginable kind of cured pork.
"Pepe, Pepe, wees saved! Ees a bacon tree!"
"Luis, maybe ees a meerage Wees in the
desert don't forget."
"Pepe, since when deed you ever hear of a
meerage that smell like bacon...ees no
meerage, ees a bacon tree!"
And with that, Luis staggers towards the
tree. He gets to within 5 metres, Pepe crawling
close behind, when suddenly a machine gun
opens up, and Luis drops like a wet
sock. Mortally wounded, he warns Pepe with
his dying breath....
"Pepe... Go back, man, you was right, ees not a
bacon tree!"
"Luis, Luis mi amigo... what ees it "
"Pepe.. ees not a bacon tree. Ees....
Ees.....
Ees....
Ees....
Ees...
Ees....
Ees..... a ham bush...."
SORRY. I know there's something wrong with
me for sending you this. Just couldn't
help it! Little voices made me do it !!!
And I bet you tried to do the accent too, didn't
you - I know you did!
You are grinning.....aren't you! Hehehe.......
The Centre for Disease Control has
issued a medical alert about a highly
contagious, potentially dangerous virus
that is transmitted orally, by hand, and
even electronically. This virus is called
Weekly Overload Recreational Killer
(WORK). If you receive WORK from
your boss, any of your colleagues or
anyone else via any means whatsoever
- DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! This virus will
wipe out your private life entirely. If you
should come into contact with WORK
you should immediately leave the
premises.
Take two friends to the nearest liquor
store and purchase one or both of the
antidotes – Work Isolating Neutralizer
Extract (WINE) and Bothersome
Employer Elimination Rebooter
(BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly
until WORK has been completely
eliminated from your system. If you
have already been infected and WORK
is, sadly, controlling your life. Get help
immediately.
Weight Watchers will meet at
7pm at the First
Presbyterian Church.
Please use large double door at
the side entrance.
Ladies, don't forget the
rummage sale. It's a chance to
get rid of those things not worth
keeping around the house.
Bring your husbands.
Robyn's Reflection
The weekend 11-12 May 2013 saw the change-over Cabinet
gathering in Havelock North. Saturday was my last meeting as
DG when we reviewed some of the things that happened
during the year. We have set up two committees to do some
research and bring some recommendations to the next cabinet
meeting. One is to assess the District Awards, the
criteria for presenting them, the way the information about club
projects is gathered, and the time frame that the awards cover
among other things. The other is to look at the results of the surveys received
after our 2013 district convention. (Thank you to those who completed a survey
form). There was one for those who attended convention and one for those who
did not. We will be taking the results of both surveys and expertise from recent
convention committees into account to ensure that future convention committees
have useful information so they can organise the best conventions possible in the
future.
Sunday was the first meeting of DGE David McDonald’s cabinet where David
described his plans to build on the work that has been done this year by GLT
Leader Tanya Leyland and GMT Leader PCC Jo Cameron in presenting
workshops, and getting facilitators trained and clubs starting to undertake the club
excellence process. There will be more people in the GMT and GLT teams to
progress that work. I wish the new cabinet every success for the 2013-2014 Lions
year.
Ken and I have attended the 40th Anniversary celebration of Riddiford Lions Club
and the 20th Anniversary of Parawai Lions Club. These were both wonderful
occasions of remembering the past, with lots of stories from projects and social
events. They are also occasions for celebrating the present and looking forward to
the future. It is always good to keep the history of a club alive so we know what
clubs and organisation we belong to.
“It ain’t over, till it's over."
Yogi Berra, former New York Yankees manager.
This is the quote that is in International President Wayne Madden’s latest message
reminding us that there is still time to finish all the plans we have for the 2012/13
year, including induction of new members.
I finish with this Lions Clubs International Purpose:
To encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal
financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards
in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours.
