PRESIDENT’S column
Hello Everybody,
Heartiest congratulations to all
competitors representing New Zealand
at the ICTSF World Down the Line
Championships recently held at the Mid
Wales shooting complex. In particular Natalie
Rooney who won the Individual Women’s
Championship, and the women’s team of
Natalie, Sheryl Anglem and Wendy Hughan
who won the Women’s World Teams Match.
Congratulations from everybody to you girls.
There were also other individual outstanding
achievements by shooting personal best
scores throughout the competition. No
doubt there were also individuals who were
disappointed in their performance, by not
achieving the personal goals they had set
for themselves. From individual personal
experience of “been there done that” may
I suggest better luck in that regard next
time, but focus on the performances that
achieved your goal of making the NZ Team.
That is what you must be congratulated for.
A full list of results from the World DTL, can
be seen on the NZCTA Website on the “News”
page. The Team manager to Wales was Judy
Castles, and she must also be congratulated
and thanked by all members of the NZ Team
for the comprehensive duties and level of
support she performed for all team members
to assist the NZ Team. There is huge interest
in the 2014 event to be held at Waikato CTC
in NZ. Work is well under way at Waikato with
the installation of additional trap fields, and
work on the clubhouse to commence shortly.
I wish to comment on the New Zealand
Shooting Federation selection of NZ’s
Olympic Shooting Representative Ryan
Taylor, competing in the men’s 50 metre rifle
small bore championship. To compete in the
Olympics, individual athletes must have 2
minimum qualifying scores, and an Olympic
quota place, and be nominated by the NZSF
and accepted by the NZ Olympic Committee.
The Olympic quota place was won by a NZ
competitor in Women’s air rifle. However
she did not have the necessary minimum
qualifying scores. The New Zealand Shooting
Federation Executive applied to transfer
the quota place from the ISSF to firstly
men’s 50 metre prone rifle, and secondly
if that competitor was unsuccessful in his
nomination being accepted, transferred to
Women’s Trap. Both Ryan Taylor and Natalie
Rooney had the necessary 2 minimum
qualifying scores required to gain Olympic
nomination, but did not have the necessary
quota place. Ryan Taylor was nominated by
the NZSF but was turned down by the New
Zealand Olympic Committee. The NZSF then
followed approved procedure, and nominated
Natalie Rooney in Women’s Trap. Natalie was
accepted and announced as part of the team
by the NZOC. However Ryan appealed to
the NZOC, then the Athletes Sports Tribunal,
which was successful. This appeal went as far
as the High Court. This meant that Natalie
was no longer part of the NZ Olympic Team. I
can only say that there is detailed procedure
to be followed by the NZSF, of which
obviously I represent the NZCTA as part of
the NZSF Board, and although it must be very
disappointing for Natalie not to be selected
on this occasion, I am sure the determination
and level of performance she has shown to
date, will enhance her opportunities for NZ
representation in the future.
There have been recent clashes of
proposed dates for NZCTA Open Shoots in the
upper North Island, where clubs are within
200 km’s of each other. May I suggest that the
best scenario for solving these clashes and
to get maximum attendance at each venue,
is to prepare a circuit programme by clubs
meeting on a yearly basis with each other,
and preparing their open shoot programme
together to avoid a clash of dates. Please
don’t just leave it to Adrienne, to say yes or
no to approval of events, please talk to one
another for your proposed dates and come
to an alternative. Currently Michael Holmes is
working on a proposed programme between
clubs in Auckland/Waikato. He may be able to
give any club guidance, which may require a
future direction to be followed in this regard.
Clubs should at this time give consideration
to the people who they wish to represent
them in the coming year on the NZCTA
National Executive. Should any club require
assistance on the procedure to be followed,
additional information or assistance, please
contact your local Councillor, Adrienne or
myself, who will be able to answer any queries
you may have. Nominations will be called for
from the National Office in due course.
I would like to encourage clubs to get in
behind the Postal Teams Events for Walker
Skeet, Allan Brown Double Rise, and Hawke’s
Bay Shield Points Score events, which are
to commence shortly. There are definite
advantages for your club members in pulling
members together in an experience of Team
shooting in a non-threatening manner on
your home ground, and of course the after
match barbecue and social occasion, which
can generate club spirit and camaraderie.
Give it a go even if you think your club cannot
compete against the bigger clubs, the end
result of creating team spirit for the benefit
of your club may be greater than winning an
event!
Clubs should also give consideration to
nominating outstanding service by members
for a “Distinguished Service Award” and
should consult NZCTA rule 2.151 for guidance.
It is important to understand that this award
sits between club Life Membership, and
NZCTA Life Membership. So consideration will
be examined on the club's application, and
individual's merits by the National Executive
for outstanding meritorious service.
The new NZCTA shoot computer
programme is currently in the midst of
being completely re-written. This involves a
complete over-haul that will include features
including clubs being able to have multiple
operators use the programme at the same
time. Also, the new programme will be able
to run multiple matches over multiple events
to cater for ISSF events and the programme
will have a lot of flexibility around multiple
sweeps over various combinations of
rounds per event. While no exact date
is available yet for this to be available to
clubs, the programme is currently at a stage
where all the input data is finalised and the
output data is being worked on. Once this
is finalised, then it will be thoroughly tested
before being released to clubs. The NZCTA
realises that many clubs throughout the
country are extremely anxious to get up and
running with this new programme and wish
to assure those clubs that their patience will
be rewarded.
Currently the World NZCTA Sporting
Team is in Chicago competing in the World
Championship. A detailed report on their
performance will be printed in the next
Gunshot.
Well that’s about all from me on this
occasion. Remember have fun at your local
club, and assist your local club Executive
for the betterment of all members.
letters to the editor
To the shooters and clubs of NZ.
It is the wish to the Canterbury Clay
Target Club Committee and members to
make public the following information.
At a recent meeting (July 2012) of the
Canterbury Clay Target Club committee,
information was passed on from the
NZCTA (Management) National executive
members advising of a significant
groundswell of ill feeling towards the
Canterbury Clay Target Club. This was
advised as being a direct result of
information being circulated of a $9,000.00
allocation of NZCTA “consolidated funds”
to the Canterbury Clay Target Club in lieu
of the allocation of a change of rotation of
the National DTL Championships
This allocation was made by way of a
resolution of the NZCTA full executive at
their meeting of August 2011.
It should be noted this allocation/
resolution came about from an initial
request from the Canterbury Clay Target
Club for consideration of an allocation of
some funding to assist with the offsetting
of lost income i.e.: loss of interest in profits
from shoots caused by the out of sequence
rotation of the National Tournament to
Letters to
Waikato allowing the conducting of the
2014 DTL World Championships event
and the negative effect this would have on
the club's income for this period. The club
relies heavily on the income from national
events.
Between the initial sending of the letter
and the meeting where this application
was considered we also encountered the
September 4th earthquake. The impact
of this on the club is still being worked
through in consultation with our Insurance
Company, but an expected shortfall
of Insurance cover of some $60,000 to
$70,000 damage to Trench facility trap
houses and skeet towers is likely.
When the NZCTA offered the
allocation of $9,000.00 as a grant from
the consolidated fund it was greatly
appreciated by the committee and club
executive.
However, apparently this information
has been conveyed to some areas of the
shooting population in a significantly
different light, which apparently has
created unfavourable comments about
the Canterbury Clay Target Club and its
members.
In our initial application, this was
never the intention as we were of the
belief that this was an area where the
NZCTA executive could assist the National
Grounds to maintain the continuity of
facilities enjoyed by shooters from all
over NZ. To this end the LAST thing the
Canterbury Club would wish is to create
any ill will towards the club from shooters
or other clubs in NZ.
Accordingly we have written to the
NZCTA executive on the 20th July 2012
advising them that the Canterbury Clay
Target Club WILL NOT accept the $9,000.00
grant allocation made by them and advised
in writing to us on 17th October 2011.
We, the Canterbury Clay Target Club
executive, would also like to advise of our
extreme disappointment at the rumour
and speculation that current councillors
who are also members of our committee
were directly responsible for this original
decision at council level. Both our members
have assured us that neither of them took
part in the motion or voting on the original
resolution.
We would also point out at this stage
that the decision for this document to be
made public was a decision taken by the full
Canterbury Clay Target Club committee, at
no point influenced by our councillors who
are part of the club committee.
Again, it is with extreme disappointment
that we find our club and its members
being put in this position. Rumour based
on unfounded truth can be extremely
damaging.
We hope this statement clarifies the
situation. We look forward to welcoming all
NZ shooters to our next major NZCTA event
conducted on the Canterbury Clay Target
Club grounds with the clear knowledge
that our only intent is to provide you, the
shooters of NZ, with the best facilities
we can and the best run events we can
manage.
These facilities belong to all shooters
throughout NZ, we are only caretakers on
your behalf.
The executive, Canterbury Clay Target
Club.
NZCTA PRESIDENT’S ENDORSEMENT
As mentioned by the Canterbury
Clay Target Club Committee, I am also
personally disappointed that members
of the shooting fraternity would rather
thrive on malicious gossip and innuendo,
rather than understand the facts and
the reasoning, why the NZCTA National
Executive would allocate $9000-00 to the
Canterbury Clay Target Club, from the
Consolidated Fund, which belongs to all
NZCTA Members.
The order of events, and facts, outlined
by the CCTC in their letter to all shooters
and clubs of NZ, are correct.
I also wish to bring to everyone’s
attention, that in my Annual Report for the
year ended December 2011 I wrote, “It has
also been a very difficult year for the clubs
of Canterbury. We all hope and trust that
2012 will be better. However, regardless of
what the future holds in this regard, please
be assured that the NZCTA and clubs of
NZ, will support the clubs and members of
the Canterbury region, without question, if
required”.
8
gunshot

I challenge you all to consider that
the two National Grounds are the
NZCTA Executive’s first priority as far
as consideration of any support and
assistance required.
The whole NZCTA Executive, as your
democratically elected representatives, is
doing its best. Those members that doubt
that should accept that moving forward
this great sport that we all enjoy, has to be
a team effort with everybody contributing.
Spare a thought for the NZCTA members
of the Canterbury region, many of whom
are facing bigger challenges in life than
many of us have even dreamed of. Ensure
your personal support, and embrace the
work the members of the Canterbury
CTC are voluntarily contributing for your
personal benefit, and also embrace the
initiatives of the NZCTA Executive.
Let’s put this matter of the $9000-00
behind us, and move this great sport
forward together.
Keith Livingstone.
President NZCTA.
To the NZCTA Management
We the Alexandra Club would like to ask
when the updated computer programme
is going to be available as we are getting
frustrated with the old programme. Our
club withholding levies was not the right
action to take but please help what would
be the right action to take especially with
your “inaction” on something that has been
promised for close on two years.
One gets terribly frustrated especially
when we are now getting new members
with blue books turning up with old
shooter numbers being reissued and the
names have not been updated.
Maybe you need to take a leaf out of
NZ Golf as they can ring a number and get
their handicap off their cell phones. We
hear that it is being done on a part time
basis, surely there are enough funds to
get this done by someone fulltime. We’ve
already incurred your wrath for not getting
something done on time so maybe you’d
set a better example.
We are asking for this as we are not the
only ones waiting!!!.
Thank you
Alexandra Clay Target Club
Reply from NZCTA
The NZCTA hears and acknowledges
the frustration from the Alexandra
Clay Target Club and accepts that the
computer programme upgrade is taking
slightly longer than anticipated. The club
withholding levy payments from the last
three shoots was not the way to facilitate
the faster way of getting this programme
out to clubs, especially without any prior
communication from the club as to why
levies were being withheld. Thank you to
the club for now rectifying this situation
with the levies as these were collected
from the shooters in good faith with the
intention they would be passed on to the
NZCTA, not held as a blackmail tool for a
cause not notified to the Association.
The NZCTA updated Shoot programme
is an extremely complex, unique piece of
software that is currently being worked
on by the developer. Most clubs will be
aware of various software that is available
around the country that is capable of
running a shoot. What the NZCTA requires
of a shoot programme is much more. In
time, a shoot programme must be able
to interface back to the database and be
able to upload the current membership
database, or components of it required to
run a competition. Once the competition is
completed, then it will communicate back
(via the NZCTA web site) with the NZCTA
database to upgrade shooters' handicap
scores and percentages. This facility will be
stage 2 of the development but must be
incorporated in the programme that runs
at club level.
Please be assured that the frustration
of the Alexandra Club, and other clubs
throughout the country is being heard
and we are making every effort to get the
new programme out to clubs as soon as
possible.
WORLD DTL
CHAMPIONSHIP
Mid Wales Shooting Centre
The Mid Wales Shooting Centre is
located in the Powys area not far from a
small town called Caersws in Mid Wales
and is centrally located approximately a
couple of hours' drive from Birmingham,
Manchester, Bristol and Cardiff. It is
a privately owned shooting ground
located on a 300 acre farm owned by
Arthur Williams, President of the Welsh
Clay Target Shooting Association. The
last time Mid Wales hosted the World
DTL Championships was in 1992 and
they ran the event over 8 layouts with
400 competitors. Arthur was honoured
to host the ICTSF's 10th World DTL
Championships at his grounds as this
event is now in its 64th year with the first
DTL World Championships being held in
1948 at Bisley. Krieghoff were the main
sponsors of the event and again put up
a Krieghoff K-80 Shotgun to be built to
the world champion's specifications and
including a custom stock or £4000.00 if
they did not want the gun.
Mid Wales now has sixteen trap layouts,
four skeet layouts and twelve Sporting
Stands. Six of the trap layouts are closed
in with three sides and an iron roof. The
covered fields, while providing shelter and
a wind break, did prove to be a challenge
with shooters having to adjust to the
echo around them and needing good
ear protection, as did spectators standing
behind them.
We were all made to feel very welcome
by Arthur and his band of helpers. The
total kiwi contingent including shooters
and supporters was approximately forty
two, so we were well represented.
All the kiwi shooters found their way
to the grounds and were all in good
spirits and keen to get shooting. The pre
World events were the British Open DTL
- sponsored by Perazzi to be shot on Sat.
21st July. Sunday 22nd July was 100 DTL
sponsored shoot and on Tuesday 24th
and Wed. 25th was the European DTL
Championships sponsored by Krieghoff.
100 targets to be shot each day. All
points score events.
The British Open shot on the 21st July
was shot in fine, calm conditions with
temperatures ranging in the mid 20's.
The event was a 100 target point score
with 434 shooters competing with 29 of
them being New Zealanders. Ewen Pirie
was the best of the Veterans from NZ with
a score of 297 gaining him a 3rd place.
Rick Spencer was 15th equal with a score
of 284 and Kelvin Ellison was 272 coming
in at 26th equal for the veterans. Approx.
100 veterans were competing.
Sheryl Anglem was the best NZ lady
shooting 293 to gain a 3rd equal place,
Natalie Rooney shot 287 - 7th equal and
Wendy Hughan shot 277, giving her a
15th equal place. There were approx 45
ladies competing.
Gavin Wenham had a good day
shooting 295 to give him a 3rd equal for
the Juniors with James Fulford shooting
291 for a 7th equal spot and Hamish Bell
was 277 for a 20th placing. There were
approx. 50 juniors competing.
The best of the Senior Men was Lindsay
Rogers shooting 297 which put him at
17th equal. Grant Castles shot 296, Colin
Waghorn 294, Craig Pilcher 292, Dylan
Woolhouse 291, Mike Sime 291, Martin
Van de Wetering 289, Robert Prince 288,
and Matthew Lovett 286. Gavin Searle
was still travelling so did not compete.
There were approximately 250 Snr.
Shooters.
Other NZ shooters to do well were
William Rooney shooting a 289 and Trevor
Manson with a score of 286.
The low flat targets coming out of the
trap did become a topic of conversation
and at times were being shot only about
a metre above fence height. Not the kind
of target the kiwis are used to shooting at.
Sunday the 22nd was a 100 target
point score shoot and summer certainly
did arrive in Mid Wales this day. Weather
was a hot 25 degrees but at times a bit
windy and again the targets were low.
Sheryl Anglem won the ladies category
with a 293. Hamish Bell got a credible
second in the juniors shooting 294 with
Dylan Woolhouse also put in a good score
of 293 to get a third in the juniors. Veteran
Ewen Pirie shot a 289 with Robert Prince
and Colin Waghorn both shooting a 295
for the Seniors earning them 16th equal.
Monday the 23rd was a day off for
all shooters. I attended the Managers'
meeting later in the afternoon on this
day to discuss and put in place the rules
for the European Open and the World DTL
Championship. Discussion points were
who would be the jury to adjudicate any
appeals submitted and if an appeal was
to be made how much the fee would be.
We set the fee at £100.00 and who would
be responsible for submitting the appeal.
A big discussion around the setting of
the targets was held. Most managers
gunshot 11

expressed concern that they were being
thrown too low. Arthur Williams was
pretty firm that they would be set at 7.30
on the morning prior to the Europeans
and would not be reset unless there was
a dramatic change in the weather prior to
the Worlds starting.
It was also interesting to learn that if
you are a non-European you cannot win
a European title. All Kiwis had entered
this event so while I had to tell them they
could not win the HOA, if they did win
their category they would still receive a
badge and the prize-money. All shoot
offs would be 50 target points score and if
anybody was still left it would go to single
barrel.
The first 200 targets shot at the Worlds
would count towards the team score and
as normal the top 10% individuals in each
category would be sent out again to shoot
the last fifty targets. The top shooters
would be re-squadded from the top down
and if there was a tied score then it would
be done alphabetically by surname.
Number one shooter was responsible
for taking the score card from layout to
layout as the squad moved and also to
take it into the office at the end. This is not
something I would recommend again as
it leaves room for cards to end up off the
grounds (this did happen) and cheating
which happened as well. The shooter was
subsequently disqualified, banned from
further competition and asked to leave
the grounds.
It was a great couple of days of shooting
for the European Champs. The weather
was hot and humid with temperatures in
the late twenties and at times a bit hazy. It
was definitely hats and sunblock weather.
All the kiwis were scattered around in
different squads which meant there was
always somebody to watch and support.
Results for this competition were mixed
with some shooters getting used to the
targets and others still struggling to get
up onto them. Robert Prince was the best
of the kiwis with a 594 score over the two
days and this earned him a 9th place in the
AA. Dylan Woolhouse shot a 589 in the
juniors gaining him a 5th placing. Ewen
Pirie continued his good form shooting a
592 putting him into second place for the
vets and Natalie Rooney's 583 gained her
a third place for the ladies. Sheryl Anglem
shot a 580 which got her into 7th place for
the ladies. Mike Sime and Craig Pilcher
both shot 591 scores followed closely
behind on 590 was Colin Waghorn and
Lindsay Rodgers.
Special mention must go to Craig
Pilcher who shot the first day clean
300/300. Well done.
The re-squadding for the Worlds after
the European Champs. was done mainly
due to feedback from the shooters that
they wanted to shoot together in team
squads. The opportunity to do this was
given to me by the office staff and this also
meant we could get the teams together
to provide a better team environment. I
must acknowledge and thank the other
NZ shooters who moved squads so we
could accommodate this change and get
all NZ teams together except the number
two Senior team as we did not have
enough spots in squads to achieve this so
they had to stay split into two squads.
On Wednesday the 25th everybody
was invited to the Official Reception and
Opening Ceremony. This was held in the
Village Hall in Trefeglwys not far away from
the shooting grounds. The free buffet
was well received and all NZ shooters
attended in their official uniforms as did all
the other countries. A few speeches were
delivered with the local MP encouraging
us all to spend lots of money in the area
and the Worlds were declared open by the
President of the ICTSF.
The ICTSF 10th World DTL
Championships definitely belonged to
the ladies. Natalie Rooney is now a World
Champion shooting a score of 879 for
the two days. She was three points clear
of Australian Lisa Hawker who ended
up on 876. This is a well deserved result
as Natalie had shot consistently well all
week. The ladies team of Natalie Rooney,
Sheryl Anglem and Wendy Hughan are
also World Champions shooting a score of
1173 a total of 17 points in front of Australia
on 1156. Ireland was third on 1154. Well
done ladies and congratulations. It was a
proud moment to hear the NZ National
Anthem not once but twice. Craig Pilcher
was our top male shooter finishing a
credible 8th = in the AA. He shot a well
deserved 592 to qualify and finished on
889/900. Ewen Pirie was our top veteran
shooter making the top 10% with his
score of 580 finishing on 871 and an 11th
placing in the veterans. Dylan Woolhouse
also had a good week of shooting and
finished 6th in the Juniors on a score of
881. Sheryl Anglem finished in fourth
place in the ladies on 871, one point off a
bronze medal. Other team result are:
Northern Ireland won the Junior Teams
on 1180 ahead of Australia on 1172 with
England third on 1171. New Zealand
placed 7th on 1145.
Australia won the Senior Teams on 2373
ahead of Wales on 2368 with Northern
Ireland third on 2365. New Zealand No
1 Team placed 10th on 2345 and New
Zealand No 2 Team placed 13th on 2321.
Australia won the Veterans on 1172
ahead of England No 1 on 1171 with
England No 2 on 1170. New Zealand
Veterans Team placed 8th on 1152.
A social gathering at the end of the
Worlds was held in a Hotel in Newtown
where we all had a meal and some drinks
to celebrate our world champs. and the
great week of shooting had by all.
In 18 months time the 11th ICTSF
World DTL Championships will be in
New Zealand, hosted by the NZCTA at
the Waikato Gun Club. Lots of inquiries
were received and after putting out
the brochures, which disappeared
very quickly, I am anticipating a large
contingent of overseas shooters attending
and competing. Qualified referees also
approached me indicating they are keen
to come.
In conclusion, I enjoyed my time in
Mid Wales and getting to know the NZ
shooters and must acknowledge what
great ambassadors they were for New
Zealand Clay Target Shooting and will no
doubt catch up again around the traps.
Thank you also to Trevor Manson for his
support and letting me tap into his wealth
of knowledge around events of this kind.
New lane layout on field 9 and the new trap house on field 8 (Field 8 & 9 Trap and lane replacement)
WAIKATO UPDATE
With the ICTSF 11th World DTL
Championships a little over 18 months
awayb an amount of ground work has
already been undertaken. To date the
following has either been completed or is
due for completion prior to the Waikato
Provincials in September this year –
New 25m lanes Fields 1 and 7, new lane
layout on Field 9, Field 8 trap house
replaced, New Fields 1 & 2 (these are
an extension of the DTL layout north of
existing Field 1) trap houses and lane
layouts which will also cater for Minis and
Ball Trap. The new layouts are on 6 meters
of peat, to provide foundation stability 30
x 7m x 200mm poles (the tops of these are
visible in one of the photos) were driven
to the hard to avoid slumping. When
the project is completed there will be
14 DTL Fields which will cope with 450+
competitors shooting 100 targets per day.
Other development has included - toilet
facility upgrade, drainage of reclaimed
land, perimeter driveway installed, fencing
replaced, tree planting, hot water cylinders
replaced with an Infinity system, new
septic tank installed and to keep our bar
person comfortable, the cottage has been
fully refurbished.
Planning is well underway to extend the
Club House which will provide a new
office, meeting room and ammunition
storage/sales area. For those that may have
shooting sorrows to drown, a new large
capacity chiller unit is being installed with
rear fill display units. All is scheduled to be
completed mid-2013. There is a number
of other replacement/refurbishment
actions scheduled and this will updated
periodically via the Club website – www.
wctc.co.nz
Around this activity the WCTC has
continued to operate a busy competition
schedule. Special thanks for the huge
number of volunteer hours contributed
OBITUARY JIM SENTON
Jim Senton passed away on 27th
June 2012 aged 67 after short illness
with cancer.
He grew up on the family farm at
Paerata south of Auckland.
After being chased by his father
across the farm for playing with guns
and giving him lip, he decided it was
safer to join the navy than stay at home,
so at 16 and with his father’s blessing, he
joined up as a boy entrant. He excelled
himself on the rugby field playing for
the New Zealand Royal Navy team
He always had a bent for weaponry
from a young lad which he used to his
advantage in the navy, achieving the
rank of Chief Petty Officer Gunnery
Instructor.
Hunting had been a passion of his
that started when he was overseas.
He was taken by an American naval
friend to hunt bear in Canada with a
black powder rifle. He shot one and
from there he became a very avid and
competent deer hunter. He would
come home after a stint overseas with
the navy, get his rifle & gear and go off
to some distant block hunting deer for
days on end.
He retired from the navy in 1981
after serving 21 years, then took up the
sport of clay target shooting, joining the
Auckland Met in 1982 of which he was a
member for over 25 years and also was a
keen committee member for a number
of those years. He was elected onto the
NZCTA National Executive in 1999.
In 1999 he was the manager of the
Auckland Provincial Shooting Team
where he secured sponsorship for the
team uniforms, enabling them to win the
inaugural Best Dressed Teams Trophy,
sponsored by Ray Mack.
Jim later joined the Waitemata Clay
Target club where he was found to be
always willing to help new shooters with
advice & training. When he saw people
struggling he would give his time to help.
Although quite sick in his last few weeks,
he would ask to be picked up and taken
to the club. On one of his last days there
he took a young lad who had never shot
before on the mark and gave him some
instruction. He also spent an hour talking
about shooting in the clubrooms and gave
his parents advice on how best to start him
off.
Over the years he travelled all over NZ
& Australia to many different clay target
clubs very often his wife Annette would
travel with him as they made lifetime
friends on the way.
Jim had great inner strength like
organising his own “Pre-memorial”
shoot at the Waitemata Clay Target
Club, “free to the first fifty shooters
also free lunch for all” he remarked he
“didn’t want to miss out on his last day
with old friends”.
Although in the weeks leading up
to his shoot his condition deteriorated
considerably and he was very weak,
he did make it and with that degree
of determination that he had, also
managed to shoot five first barrel
targets with a squad of five friends (no
one missed such was the pressure). He
had a great last day at the “club” with
many friends from the Far North to
Whitianga. Thanks to all who attended
and a big thank you to “The Girls” for
a superb lunch, also to the Waitemata
Club for making it all possible.
He will be greatly missed around
the traps and we would like to give our
sympathy to Annett and family.
sporting comment
by Ron Madden
Last month the full Sporting Clay Committee met with several
Council members including President, Keith Livingstone,
Adrienne Sears, Derek Sheen, Gavin Searle, Ian Swale and
Neil Winsloe. At this meeting a Policy Document for Sporting
Clays was discussed, debated and accepted. Keith also
confirmed that Michael Holmes had resigned from his portfolio
as Director of Sporting and Neil Winsloe had graciously taken
over.
I must publically thank Michael for his efforts to the Sporting
code; it must have been a daunting task for Michael to front
four bolshie, ardent Sporto’s and sometimes present to us
some unfavourable decisions beyond his control. I often
clashed with Michael but always for the benefit of sporting
shooters, and I wish him all the best for his future on Council.
He can now relax a bit and get back to his own passions.
Thanks for a thankless job well done.
The Policy Document basically laid out responsibilities of
the SCC and Council to each other. It gives the SCC the
responsibility of running the sport on behalf of the shooters
with little restraint other than keeping the Director of Sporting
informed and bringing any major issues to Council. It cleared
up selection policies, team Managers' selection and avenues
of funding and Association shoot dates.
All in all, it was a very successful meeting and cleared up
some issues that had been hanging around. It allowed us to
put the points of difference, as we feel our discipline is quite
unique and is nothing like other shotgun codes in its set up
time, expenses, and amount of equipment needed, the need
of constantly new and varied grounds, and how shooters want
to travel to different places to try different targets and settings.
We all have a copy of the Policy if anyone is interested.
The SCC was extremely disappointed that they could not
fund the Oceania Teams and give the World FITASC Teams
a bit more. We have moved with Council’s idea to adopt a
funding stream from next January. Basically there is no $3
shooters levy required at Association matches. As of Jan
1 2013 a $3 individual levy will be compulsory, giving us a
fee from all Association matches. In the interim, (before Jan
1) we are asking shooters' to voluntarily give that $3. We
are asking participating clubs' to add that $3 to their entry
forms until it becomes compulsory. The SCC is interested in
gauging shooters and clubs response to a small fee for other
Qualifying matches and a base fee for any official FITASC
match. Although some Qualifying matches are just ‘club’ days,
they do bring in extra shooters, and it is felt that some small
recompense should be sought for these matches. It does
sound like we are sort of money grabbing but it is the only
revenue that the SCC has. We must stand on our own and we
have a bit of a wish list to try and always fund Oceania plus
the occasional World FITASC. We want to, down the track,
look at having some coaching around the country and it is my
personal wish to give A, B, and C grade shooters some reward
after winning their grade in the Nationals, maybe an airfare to
compete in the Aussie Nationals or something similar.
Overall it is not much per shooter per year, but all added up
with the $1 from every other Sporting/Compak shoot gives us
a good funding base.
Despite one or two criticisms, I think the sport is in great
stead and numbers are trending up. I know there has been
comment, some written, re recent shoots, target settings
and the future of Sporting. I do not think that this is the end
of Sporting at all, far from it. Let me say quite categorically
that there is absolutely no hidden agendas with the Sporting
Clay Committee or with our chosen sport. We are a group of
extremely keen, unpaid, sporting shooters who believe in the
sport and its future and work bloody hard to try and promote
and develop it. I’m really at a loss to understand exactly where
that comes from and what’s behind it.
On a personal note, I see the FITASC Oceania as the biggest
International event in the Southern Hemisphere outside the
Pan African held in South Africa, so it’s going to be a relatively
hard event. It is up to individual interpretation to what silly
targets are and is pointless getting into who set what and who
OK’d it all. As from my point of view an extremely dedicated
group had spent weeks at Waikato setting up. In fact the night
we arrived the Lalich boys were driving around in the half dark
setting up the last of the signs by bike headlamp, and while
we wandered around with them, you could see the huge man
hours put in to setting up this event. During the next 3 days
we could only appreciate the huge effort. If you have shot any
International matches you will know that toughening it up on
day 3 is the norm on that style of shoot. Could you criticize
this I don’t think so.
Over the 3 days shooting at Waikato, how many targets
were some people unhappy with, 6/7 maximum. So why not
praise the other 194. When we got back to the mainland we
replicated that ‘famous’ 80- metre looper and shot it until we
knew exactly how to shoot it. Isn’t this better and more fun
than complaining
Just think while you are packing your car, catching your flight
and heading toward anywhere for a weekend’s shooting,
someone has and still is putting in a huge effort.
When we set up the Nationals at Cromwell we thought all of
the targets were fine and quite shootable. It’s only when you
start actually shooting that you see patterns emerging, but by
then it’s far too late. Sometimes it’s spot, on sometimes not
quite.
It’s subjective and every one of us has different ideas, but in
the end it’s the ideas of those that put in the efforts that count.
Well in my book anyway. ■
MCKENZIE SKEET
AT SOUTHLAND
Skeet shooters in the south are spoilt
for choice when it comes to North/South
qualifying events. The shoot calendar
during the months of May and June are
dominated by the 100 target days. We at
Southland were delighted therefore to
host the McKenzie Skeet and to welcome
to our grounds a large field of competitors.
Unfortunately the weather was not
a bit kind to the shooters and the term
“Sporting Skeet” was used on more than
one occasion. Despite the weather we
had a great day. Not only do we contest
the McKenzie Shield, a team event shot on
handicap but we also have a graded trophy
match which adds to the day.
Gary Hoffman (Balfour) was the man
to beat on the day and took home the
Robinson Trophy for the HOA. Gary
shot a very respectable 95/100 which,
considering the conditions, was a good
score with Ewen Pirie (Mataura) 93/100
second and Lindsay Rodgers (Southland)
91/100 third.
The team event is always closely
followed. Being contested on handicap
puts a different spin on team selections and
the scoreboard becomes the main focus as
the day draws to a close. The McKenzie
Shield has had a much needed facelift
and we were only too happy to put it very
securely back on the club room wall after
winning it from some very determined
competition.
The prize giving was quite the occasion.
Lyndsay Maxwell did a sterling job of
piping the winning team into the club
rooms. Life member John Gorton carried
the McKenzie Shield in and the Scottish
theme continued as a haggis was on offer,
devoured by some and rejected by many.
All in all a very successful day. Our thanks
to all who helped to make it the success
that it was.
(Reloaders Supplies)
The weekend could not have been better as far as the weather
was concerned with both days being still and clear, albeit with
a very good frost in most places. It would be a number of years
since there has been such a heavy frost at Thames as there was
on Sunday morning. Good fields on both days registered for the
Reloaders Sponsored shoots this weekend. There was also the
inaugural Ron Dent Memorial Trophy up for grabs over the two
days of competition.
Both clubs are very appreciative of the support and sponsorship
provided by Reloaders Supplies and it was great to have Scotty
Stonex there with the Reloaders trailer showing off guns and
accessories for sale. The sponsorship table of prizes was a real
credit to Reloaders Supplies Ltd with an array of prizes for over 4
grades and for the category winners.
Saturday 16th – Huntly
A field of over 50 shooters registered for the 100 targets of
competition this first day. The day was shot in 4 rounds of 25
targets over the 3 traps, with a break for an excellent lunch (thanks
Sharon) in the middle of the day. Going into the last 25 targets
there was only one shooter on 75, Jon Beddis, followed closely by
Ross Ellis, Allan Vickers and Martin van de Wetering on 74. With
a clean score of 100, Jon was not able to be headed off, leaving
Ross and Allan to shoot off for 1st & 2nd in AA grade while Martin
and Peter Goodwin on 98 shot off for 3rd. Both shoot offs went to
meter a break after 25 targets, with Ross eventually taking 1st after
having let Allan in once. There was also some very good scoring in
Reloaders Supplies A Grade L-R Liam Buchanan 2nd John Steed
the other grades, especially in A grade by Doreen Sanderson who
shot a 99 and also by Trevor Roberts in B grade.
Many thanks to the hard working team at the Huntly club for a
very well-run day that went off without any problems. A special
thanks to Lil Beddis in the office and all those who kept the day
moving.
Sunday 17th – Thames
A very cold start to the day, with a heavy frost and cold breeze,
saw a slow start to the shooting for the day. The 150 targets were
shot 50 at a time per visit to two traps, meaning all shooters would
shoot a round on each of the six fields during the course of the day.
Once again the grounds were in a pristine condition and looked a
real picture. Like Huntly, Thames is very fortunate to have a very
hard working team, especially from our Life Members, who along
with others ensured that the day ran smoothly for the 78 shooters
who registered for the competition. It was great to see the visitors
from Wairoa and also Northland for this weekend.
WAIKATO CLAY TARGET CLUB
Reloaders AA Grade L-R Jon Beddis 3rd Martin van de Wetering
HOA Grant Castles 3rd Dean Horn 2nd
The first round of 50 saw only four possibles scored by Jon
Beddis, Martin van de Wetering and Grant Castles in AA grade
along with Liam Buchanan in A Grade. They were closely followed
by a further 16 on a score of 49. By the end of the second round
there were only two shooters still all on with a 100 score, both from
the Thames Club (Martin & Liam) while in AA grade Grant Castles,
Allan Vickers, Ian Hartley and Jon Beddis were one back on 99. In
A grade, closely behind Liam were John Steed and Trevor Roberts
on 98. B grade at this stage was being led by Gareth Roberts with
a 95, followed by Mark Fagan and Alan Beaver on 94. C grade had
Phil Garland just ahead of William Adams by two on a score of 89.
As is often the case, the last round was telling with Martin, Jon &
Allan all dropping 1 target, while Liam let three slip. This left Grant
Castles and Martin van de Wetering on 149 while Jon Beddis, Allan
Vickers and Deano Horn were on 148. In A grade John Steed and
Liam Buchanan were both on 147 and headed for a shoot off. B
grade required a shoot off for 2nd and 3rd between Tony Beaver
and Peter Lapwood. With the shoot offs being held at a meter a
break, the results were soon in and everyone could head to the
clubrooms for the prize giving. The one target missed in the last
25 by Martin would prove costly as a chance for a shoot off in the
two day Ron Dent Memorial Trophy went begging by one.
Once again many thanks must go to Scotty and the team at
Reloaders Supplies for their tremendous sponsorship and support.
CHRISTCHURCH
EARTHQUAKE
APPEAL
Below are a few of the responses
from shooters who have been sent
payments from the NZCTA Earthquake
appeal. Names have been withheld for
privacy.
“Please could you thank the National
Executive and all the Clubs from
around the country for their very
kind donation which same as a very
nice surprise. The money will be put
towards some heating for this winter.
So thanks once again.”
“Thank you for your generous gesture
of support from both myself and my
wife. The knowledge that others care is
kindness indeed.”
“I would just like to thank the NZCTA
for the earthquake hardship cheque
that you sent to us. I’m not sure who
nominated us but it was well received
and although our home and property
has been fully rebuilt, you can never
replace all the items we lost so this
money will replace something that was
close to us and we’ll always be thankful
to the generosity of the NZCTA
members that contributed to the fund.”
“Thank you for your kind assistance,
which represents a week’s worth of
groceries for my family. I would like to
express my gratitude to the Council of
the NZCTA and its members. Thanks to
those who have contributed financially,
but also to those who have given each
in their own way, whether by acts of
kindness or with thoughts and prayers.
I am humbled.”
“Recently I received a letter of support
and a cheque from members of the
NZCTA. This was in relation to living in
the "Red Zone" and having to leave my
house due to structural damage. I wish
to thank the members of the NZCTA
for their kind gesture which is greatly
appreciated.” ■
REPCO 100 HCBD
The Repco 100 HCBD was hosted by
Hutt Valley on Sunday 17th June.
Our thanks go to Repco Upper Hutt, who have supplied
approximately $1,000.00 worth of prizes. Unfortunately, we only
had 23 shooters and only 19 contesting the prize pool and with
prizes going down to tenth place, not many shooters missed out
on a prize.
Highest score of the day was 100, recorded by Robert Prince from
20 metres. It was good to see Robert showing some form before
heading off to the World Champs in a few weeks. Robert was also
four targets clear of Bruce Scott taking second place on 96 from
13 metres. Dave Turner took out third place shooting 95 from 22
metres. Fourth place went to Wayne Pym shooting 94 from 18
metres. Jason Pugh was fifth shooting 92 from 13 metres after
a shoot off with Mark McGhie, also shooting 92 from 20 metres,
taking sixth place. Seventh place went to Karen Hayes shooting 91
from 15 metres. Adam Green shooting 90 took out eighth place as
Mark Hing & Warren Kurney had gone home before the shoot off,
also shooting 90’s, sharing ninth & tenth place. Guys, you will have
to toss a coin on first pick of the remaining prizes.
Thanks again to Darren from Repco Upper Hutt for supplying
the prizes, all the prizes were well received by their respective
recipients. ■
intercollege shoot
Nightcaps once again hosted this shoot
on their grounds, and you could not have
got a more perfect day for shooting. You
could almost believe that summer was
here, instead of the middle of winter. A big
thank you to the parents and coaches who
travel with these young shooters. What a
pleasure it is to have them on our grounds.
Once again a bit thank you to Fish
and Game Southland for their continued
Sponsorship to our Club for this shoot.
What an array of medals on display for
the shooters to win! I must also thank
our volunteers who come along and man
the traps all day and keep things running
smoothly. This shoot was finished by 2.30
with presentations over and everybody on
their way home by 3pm.
Congratulations to all shooters
who shot possibles or personal bests.
Congratulations to Tyler Broomhall from
Southland Boys' High who only missed
one target for the day which was very good
shooting.
HANDY HINTS:
+ Dry Rumble. To reduce the time that
your wet towels need to be tumble
dried, add an already dry towel to the
wet load. It really works!
+ Dog Wash. For an inexpensive
shampoo, use a few drops of
eucalyptus wool wash. The
end result is (a) a really shiny coat and
(b) keeps fleas at bay. Always apply to
the neck area first in order to prevent
fleas seeking safety by taking refuge
in your dog's ears.
+ Dirty or greasy fingertips can be
removed from painted surfaces by
rubbing area with a slice
of white bread.
+ Felt Pen Recovery: To rejuvenate
dried out felt pens dip the tip in
vinegar for five seconds.
+ Easier ironing. Before ironing jeans
first place them in a freezer for 30
minutes. You'll find the
iron glides over the material to
eliminate stubborn creases. Apply
the same principle to removing
candle wax off candle holders.
+ Reduce static cling by pinning a
small safety pin to the seam of your
garment and eliminate a clinging
shirt or dress. Same applies to pants
that cling when wearing stockings.
Place the pin on the seams and static
is gone.
Central & Lower North Island
Secondary School Series 2012
July 22nd 2012 – Round 4 Palmerston North Gun Club
Twelve teams from eight schools competed in the 4th
of seven rounds of the 2012 Central & Lower North Island
Secondary School Series. A north east breeze tended to lift
the targets and offered challenging shooting as it gradually
strengthened throughout the day. Consequently there were
only two possibles shot all day, by Todd McCormick and
Kieran Rutten – both in the single rise. However there was
an epic single rise shoot-off as 16 shooters slugged it out for
the bronze medal with Oliver Withers finally prevailing over the
other 15 shooters.
Results from Round 4 as follows:
Eye Opener (poss 5) Kaea Bremner, Matt Payne, Angus
McKnight (Napier Boys) Peter Marffy, Todd McCormick
HOA Lisa Simonson and Kieran Rutten
2012 North Island Secondary
Schools Clay Target Championships
Sponsored by NZ Fish & Game
Mid-winter often provides conditions
that impact on the scores, not so on 30
June at Waikato. The day started with a
-3 degree frost and just about a perfect
day followed. Single Rise started just
before 9.00am and with squads backing
up well all 171 (including 11 girls) DTL
qualifiers were completed by 1.00pm.
Skeet followed with a disappointing
29 entrants, so it did not take long to
process. After the shoot offs prize giving
was concluded by 3.00pm so those
travelling had an early start.
For some general comments about
the day, which ran to the usual WCTC
standards, entrants both presented
and conducted themselves extremely
well and there were no issues for the
Jury (Mike Holmes, Gavin Paton, Dean
Everett) to consider. This is just as well,
with Les Clarke as Shooters' Rep, the
language does become colourful and
younger people can have their ears
blistered. All shoot offs were concluded
relatively quickly
Thanks to the following for the donation
of their time – Connie and Sally (the Te
Kuiti Office Team) who administered
the shoot with software very well and
contributed to the timely and smooth
running of the event, Larry Discombe
- Trap Mechanic, Diane and Cameron
Pearson & Mrs Ross Score Board, Dean
Everett – Shoot Marshall, Hamilton BHS
for field setting and the clean-up.
Thanks to Fish & Game New Zealand
and Rudi Hoetjes (Northland Fish
& Game Manager) for travelling to
the WCTC and assisting with the
presentations, also Kilwell Sports who
eferees’ corner
I’ve just been watching the men’s final of the ISSF
what great shooting from the 23 year old
four days after the World DTL champs
I still can’t find the results of the event on the
internet even though there is a dedicated website!
The scores are there, but no details of the shooters, thus
no results. That’s a big let down and I apologise for using
these pages to air my disappointment.
Referees' stuff
New referees this past two months are Russell Kelly of Nightcaps,
Deano Horn of Whitianga, Karen Hayes of Hutt Valley and Murray
Smith from Marlborough. Thanks guys; you’ll all get your rewards
in heaven.
I was recently approached by a couple of gents who had struck
an uncommon fault with a gun while refereeing a match – it was
the old double discharge. This is when both barrels of a double
barrelled gun fire either simultaneously or in rapid succession.
While rare today, such faults were common on the older guns
used 30 to 40 years ago. Being rare, they are worth a bit of space
here.
The correct response from a referee depends on whether the
event is skeet or trap. Here’s the consideration:
► In Trap, a double discharge is cause for a “No Target”
whether the target was hit or not.
► In Skeet, if the target is missed, the loss is scored. If the
target is hit, the referee shall call “no target” and the
target is to be shot again.
► In both DTL and Skeet, after two double discharges
from the same gun, the gun is to be declared disabled.
► Any subsequent double discharge by the shooter in the
same round shall be declared “lost”.
For reference to malfunctions and disabled guns, take the rule
book to bed with you and read rules 4-28 to 4-33. You’ll find
shooting procedures in Book 2. Sweet dreams.
Winter Targets
Recent weather is having its effect on targets, but still there are
some traps which just seem to have a mind of their own. Referees
get stuck with traps which deliver poor targets and of course end
up bearing the brunt of the shooters' angst. Here is a reprint of an
article that was previously published in the March 2011 Gunshot.
It seems relevant in this wintry weather we’re having, and perhaps
referees will check that traps at their own clubs meet the required
specifications.
A Discussion on Target Presentation
Reprinted from Gunshot, March 2011
It is in every club's best interest to throw targets from properly
adjusted traps. The recent reduction in target distance tolerance
will mean greater consistency between clubs, but
it will require clubs to ensure their target
presentation meets the standard. Target
setting standards are provided to ensure
consistency between clubs and consistency
between traps at a single club. Consistency/equity
of competition is the reason for all our rules.
The critical statement with all target distance settings is
“in calm weather conditions”. The intent of this phrase is that
the spring tensions should not be adjusted simply because wind
conditions alter the target flight distance. Springs should be set
to throw a target the nominal distance while the weather is calm,
then locked and left. Wind will affect the throwing distance, but
that is part of the game; it’s an outdoor sport. Don’t attempt to
drive a target all the way to the peg in a head wind!
At association events it is the Shooters’ Rep’s responsibility to
check the settings of traps before an event is shot. This way, the
onus for target setting becomes that of the shooters' rep instead
of the club trap mechanic. Don’t beat up on the trap mechanic; he
should only be doing what the shooters' rep requires.
At large events where a number of traps are used for qualifying,
consistency of targets across the traps becomes a major
consideration. Not only should targets meet the height and
distance requirements, but the speed of the targets must also be
consistent. This shows up when some traps throw targets which
fall at the distance mark, while targets from other traps hit the
ground and still manage to bounce or crawl three or four metres
more. This is the “driven target”, which while it appears to meet the
requirements of the rules, creates unnecessary inconsistency and
does not meet the intent of the rules.
The requirement for the skeet spring setting at rule 6.10 is equally
applicable to trap. Spring tension should be set so the target will
just reach the distance peg under a “no wind” condition.
Double Arm Traps
There are a couple of European companies making double arm
traps. These traps provide infinitely adjustable double rise targets
by having two independent traps mounted on a single axis. When
used for single target events, each of the two traps is activated
alternately, thus they provide a large capacity magazine and quick
reloading between targets. They do however introduce other
considerations which need awareness.
Single Target Events
Consistency becomes absolutely critical when two arms are
throwing alternate targets on one field. Each arm must throw
exactly the same target trajectory, meaning the speed of the
target, the height and the distance must be identical.
These settings are easily achieved by setting the two traps straight
ahead and throwing two targets simultaneously. Simple spring
and height adjustments can be made to ensure the two targets
fly together at the same speed, reach the same height, and fall
to the ground at the same distance. The last few metres of flight
gunshot 43

may differ as the targets curl owing to the different direction of
rotation of the two targets, but this is not of concern.
Single Rise/Double Rise
Double arm traps that have been set correctly for single rise must
have the spring adjusted to throw regular double rise targets. The
nominal distance for a single rise target is 48 metres +/- 2m, while
a double rise target is thrown 42 to 45 metres (in calm weather).
In each case, the trap should be set to throw the targets as near
as possible to the nominal distance for the event, those nominal
distances being some five metres apart. There is no “happy
medium” where a single spring setting may be used to throw legal
targets for both single and double rise from a double arm trap. The
intent is, and has always been that double rise targets are to be
thrown approx. 5m shorter than a single rise target.
European Trap Springs
Clubs using these European traps should be aware that there are
specific springs made for various throwing distances. For example
Laporte springs are colour coded as follows:
► Black – 25 to 50m, (e.g. Trap)
► Green – 50 to 70m, (e.g. Skeet)
► Grey – 65 to 85m, (e.g. Ball Trap & ISSF)
► Red – 80 to 110m. (e.g. Sporting)
The use of the correct spring for a given distance will cure many
perceived problems as it maintains correct arm pressure against
the target during acceleration from the trap. Attempts to throw
targets shorter distances than the spring is designed for can
cause as many problems as attempting to throw a target beyond
the spring's design parameters. Use of the correct spring for the
distance will provide the best targets.
Single Arm Double Rise Traps
With one of these traps set to throw a single target 48 metres,
throwing two targets simultaneously from the same blade will
cause both targets to be thrown about 5 metres short. This being
the case, there is no predetermined requirement to alter the spring
tension, and in most cases it won’t be required at all. It is also the
likely scenario which gave us our current standard distances.
Release velocity
To ensure comparable trajectory targets across all traps, clubs
hosting large events using multiple traps should consider
requesting the loan of the Association's radar gun to ensure all
targets are thrown in a consistent manner. This is especially so
when twin arm traps are used for single target events. The speed
that the targets leave the trap arms can be verified quickly and
simply. Height and distance will remain obvious by eyeball and
height peg and having an observer stand in the outfield in line
with the height peg. Springs can then be given the final tweak to
ensure consistent delivery. It is a given that the target must remain
within the height and distance specifications.
In Conclusion
Whether you’re at Waldronville in a Southerly, Canterbury during
a nor’wester, Marlborough during one of their easterlies or Hutt
Valley during the equinox period you will see quite different
targets. But on a still, calm day at any club in the country all targets
should be presented the same, and that is the sole intent of our
target setting standards.
Being trap setter at your club is an unenviable position. If you
do everything well, nobody notices you. If the traps break down,
throw irregular targets or you have inconsistency between traps,
everybody wants a piece of you. However the trap setter and trap
mechanic carry most of the ability to draw shooters back to his (or
her) club by presenting consistent and regular targets across all
traps, and can make or break a club's reputation.
Set the distance and height on a calm day, and if the wind comes
up, do not be tempted to alter the spring. Alter the height and
track as necessary to ensure that the target remains regular –
through the hoop or over the bar, but the distance is only to be set
in calm/no wind conditions.
Clay Target Shooting relies on similarity/consistency/equity/
sameness call it what you will, but we must have the same
opportunity to break targets at each and every club in the country.
We ask that all clubs follow the guidelines in the rule book to
ensure we generate such equality in all our target presentations.
Handy Hint
Just by wiping the old pitch off the plate or arm with a turpentine
soaked rag and dressing the blade rubber with a wooden block
with sandpaper glued on to it can make huge a huge improvement
to target presentation.
There you go; that is another round completed. Shooters please
check your guns and scores.
Regards, Blue ■
The perfect husband
Several men are propping up the Gorge Road Club bar. A
cellular phone on the bar rings and one of the local boys
engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk.
Everyone else in the room stops to listen.
MAN: "Hello"
WOMAN: "Hi Honey, it's me. Are you at the club"
MAN: "Yes."
WOMAN: "I'm at the shops now and found this beautiful
leather coat. It's only $2,000; is it OK if I buy it"
MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much."
WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw
the new models. I saw one I really liked."
MAN: "How much"
WOMAN: "$90,000."
MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options."
WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing... I was just talking
to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is
back on the market. They're asking $980,000 for it."
MAN: "Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000.
They'll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eightythousand
if it's what you really want."
WOMAN:"OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much!"
MAN: "Bye! I love you, too."
The man hangs up. The other men in the room are staring at
him in astonishment, mouths wide open
He turns and asks, "Anyone know whose phone this is” ■
Oceania
Re 2012 Oceania’s recently held at the WCTC
The various representations in the July/
August Gunshot regarding aspects of the
2012 Oceania’s event will have left many
confused about who had accountability for
target setting throughout the event.
For the prevention of further
misunderstanding outlined are the facts
regarding the target setting and the
management of final target presentation.
Friday – all fields were set by the WCTC
with Rob Carruthers' approval
Sunday – Field Falcon WCTC
Field Fiocchi R McFarlane
R McFarlane adjusted targets
and signed off all field settings
Summarising, the Vice President FITASC
Oceania Region (R McFarlane) was in
charge of the shoot (target settings) and
apart from Friday, the WCTC was required
to implement his directives with only a
small amount of wriggle room available.
Mr McFarlane has had a long association
with FITASC and has followed the 2012
format many times previously
The WCTC understands that the final
day settings were, in some cases, set
towards very difficult. Whatever the
prevailing rationale was for this approach,
the WCTC neither had control of nor wish
to comment, We will leave that to those
that administer the sport.
We trust this clarifies fully for those
concerned.
Finally all 2012 FITASC entrants would
agree it was a very well run, enjoyable and
memory filled event.
KILWELL 100 COMPAK
SPORTING CHALLENGE
The new blood in the Sporting hierarchy of the Hutt Valley Gun
Club provided a range of new targets over the four Compak fields,
including a trap on top of a cherry picker. Bruce Scott and his
Sporting Team which I won’t name in case I miss somebody, set
the four fields on Saturday morning which allowed some practice
rounds in the afternoon for anybody who wanted it.
A good turnout of 62 shooters arrived on the Sunday to shoot
the inaugural 100 Tgt Kilwell Compak Sporting layout, with visiting
shooters from Wanganui, Palmerston North and Wairarapa.
Looking at the scores of each round, the third field looked to
have been the most challenging, with no possibles shot,
although there were three 24’s. The first and second field both
had three possibles shot and there were six possibles shot on the
fourth field. All of the targets were there to be shot and the usual
top shooters got most of them.
Craig Matthews shot the highest score of 97 to win the
High Overall, very impressive shooting. Rod Bryant was just as
impressive winning first A grade only one target behind on 96.
Adam Green won second A grade on 93 and Thomas Bishop was
third A grade after a shoot off with Rob Carruthers on 90’s.
Daniel Feutz showed that he won’t be staying in B grade long,
taking first B grade with a very impressive 96, 10 targets clear of
second B grade, won by Brian Manton on 86, with Rob Edwards
taking out third B grade on 84.
Another who won’t be staying in his grade long is Brent Sully
who was first C Grade with a score of 90, followed by Murray
Gribben on 87 taking second C grade and Stu Whitney third C on
80.
Top Lady shooter of the day went to Jude Manton shooting 75,
Rod Bryant also won the veterans with his score of 96 and Juniors
taken out by Thomas Bishop.
The day ran very well and the shooting was all over before
3:30pm.
Many thanks to Geoff Wells and Kilwell Sports for the
sponsorship provided, which included a Mossberg Shotgun for
HOA, prizes for all places in the grades and first Lady, Veteran and
Junior. As well as a Mossberg .22 rifle as a drawn prize, which was
won by Sarah Bramwell and anything else left on the prize table
was also drawn.
During the presentations, many of the recipients commended
the Club, Bruce Scott and his team for the well run shoot and
the target settings. These accolades also continued during the
following week by various emails.
A very big thank you to Bruce Scott and his dedicated team,
also thanks to Rob Carruthers for his input and work in overseeing
the setting of targets.
There is no doubt that this shoot will be appearing on the
programme again next year, see you then. ■
