promoting the health and well-being
of the MUSC community

Health 1st, the MUSC Employee Wellness Program,
has been developed to promote the health and wellbeing
of the MUSC community. It is jointly funded
by the Medical University and the University Medical
Center. This growing program focuses on
• physical, nutritional, and emotional health,
• injury reduction, and
• information about our primary care providers here
at MUSC.
Below are some of the programs that Health 1st
already has in place.
farmer’s market
This event, sponsored by Health
1st, takes place every Friday in 3
locations in the Horseshoe, behind
Charleston Memorial Hospital
and at Harborview Office Towers
starting at 7am and going until
about 3:30pm. Here you can
purchase fresh fruits and
vegetables from local farmers. It is recommended
that every person eat 5-9 servings of colorful,
nutritious, disease preventing fruits and vegetables
each day.
stairwell project
Don’t Wait. Activate! Use the stairs! This is the
intended message in Health 1st StairWELL Project.
The StairWELL Project was fully funded by a grant
received from the Eat Smart Move More SC
Coalition. Information about Eat Smart Move More
SC can be found at www.eatsmartmovemoresc.org.
Inspirational and whimsical murals were painted in
the President Street Parking Garage stairwell to
encourage MUSC employees
to use the stairwells as part
of adding more physical
exercise to their daily
activities. Take a walk and
come see this energizing,
motivational artwork!
Walking Trails
Walking trails have been
designated inside and outside the
hospital. Walking is one of the
most accessible and beneficial
forms of exercise. Find these trail
maps online at www.musc.edu/
medcenter/health1st and click on
the ‘Being Active’ link. Or email
health1st@musc.edu for a copy.
Worksite Screenings, classes
Worksite Screenings occur monthly for employees
and spouses. Valued at about $250, these
screenings include chemistry and lipid profiles,
hemogram, BP and more. Depending on insurance
coverage this only costs $15 or $42. Register for the
Worksite Screening online at Health 1st’s website:
www.musc.edu/medcenter/health1st. Classes are
also available (usually FREE) and cover topics such
as how to develop healthier lifestyles, weight management
skills, and stress management. Join us each
Wednesday in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital
and Ashley River Tower from 10am to 1pm for a free
chair massage and information about weekly wellness
