about initiatives to improve your heart to live a stronger,<br />

longer life.<br />

Employee Assistance Program - This confidential<br />

free service is available to help you deal with difficult<br />

personal, family and work related problems and offers<br />

four free counseling sessions a year. For details, call<br />

Employee <strong>Health</strong> Services - This group manages the<br />

occupational health care needs of employees of the MUSC,<br />

MUHA, UMA and other entities per contract. Call 792-<br />

Pastoral Care - Offers services to the spiritual and<br />

religious concerns of patients, families and staff. Call 792-<br />

MUSC Weight Management <strong>Center</strong> - This center<br />

offers resources to lose weight and the support to keep it<br />

off. Employee discounts and payroll deduction plans are<br />

available for all MUSC, MUHA, and UMA employees. Call<br />

MUSC Wellness <strong>Center</strong> - This center is more than a<br />

health club focusing on the development of total<br />

well-being and dedicated to the promotion of healthy<br />

University Risk Management - Provides<br />

ergonomic risk analysis of your work site and offers prevention<br />

and control strategies, free to requesting departments.<br />

The following results were taken from a recent survey<br />

of 3,283 MUSC employees (22% male and 78% female):<br />

• 55% are overweight or obese.<br />

• nearly 60% of employees reported exercising only<br />

sometimes or not at all.<br />

• those who are overweight are 6 times more likely<br />

to have diabetes<br />

• those who are overweight are 4.5 times more likely<br />

to have high blood pressure<br />

promoting the health and well-being<br />

of the MUSC community


<strong>Health</strong> <strong>1st</strong>, the MUSC Employee Wellness Program,<br />

has been developed to promote the health and wellbeing<br />

of the MUSC community. It is jointly funded<br />

by the <strong>Medical</strong> University and the University <strong>Medical</strong><br />

<strong>Center</strong>. This growing program focuses on<br />

• physical, nutritional, and emotional health,<br />

• injury reduction, and<br />

• information about our primary care providers here<br />

at MUSC.<br />

Below are some of the programs that <strong>Health</strong> <strong>1st</strong><br />

already has in place.<br />

farmer’s market<br />

This event, sponsored by <strong>Health</strong><br />

<strong>1st</strong>, takes place every Friday in 3<br />

locations in the Horseshoe, behind<br />

Charleston Memorial Hospital<br />

and at Harborview Office Towers<br />

starting at 7am and going until<br />

about 3:30pm. Here you can<br />

purchase fresh fruits and<br />

vegetables from local farmers. It is recommended<br />

that every person eat 5-9 servings of colorful,<br />

nutritious, disease preventing fruits and vegetables<br />

each day.<br />

stairwell project<br />

Don’t Wait. Activate! Use the stairs! This is the<br />

intended message in <strong>Health</strong> <strong>1st</strong> StairWELL Project.<br />

The StairWELL Project was fully funded by a grant<br />

received from the Eat Smart Move More SC<br />

Coalition. Information about Eat Smart Move More<br />

SC can be found at www.eatsmartmovemoresc.org.<br />

Inspirational and whimsical murals were painted in<br />

the President Street Parking Garage stairwell to<br />

encourage MUSC employees<br />

to use the stairwells as part<br />

of adding more physical<br />

exercise to their daily<br />

activities. Take a walk and<br />

come see this energizing,<br />

motivational artwork!<br />

Walking Trails<br />

Walking trails have been<br />

designated inside and outside the<br />

hospital. Walking is one of the<br />

most accessible and beneficial<br />

forms of exercise. Find these trail<br />

the ‘Being Active’ link. Or email<br />

Worksite Screenings, classes<br />

and Wellness Wednesdays<br />

Worksite Screenings occur monthly for employees<br />

and spouses. Valued at about $250, these<br />

screenings include chemistry and lipid profiles,<br />

hemogram, BP and more. Depending on insurance<br />

coverage this only costs $15 or $42. Register for the<br />

Worksite Screening online at <strong>Health</strong> <strong>1st</strong>’s website:<br />

www.musc.edu/medcenter/health<strong>1st</strong>. Classes are<br />

also available (usually FREE) and cover topics such<br />

as how to develop healthier lifestyles, weight management<br />

skills, and stress management. Join us each<br />

Wednesday in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital<br />

and Ashley River Tower from 10am to 1pm for a free<br />

chair massage and information about weekly wellness<br />

related topics. Check out the <strong>Health</strong> <strong>1st</strong> column<br />

in the Catalyst for helpful health tips and information<br />

about the coming week’s Wellness Wednesday.<br />

Smoking Cessation<br />

Quitting smoking is difficult. MUSC Quit Now For Life!<br />

is a free Smoking Cessation Program with a comprehensive<br />

approach that is offered to MUSC employees<br />

on campus during work hours. This program includes<br />

education about smoking cessation, state of the art<br />

pharmacotherapy, and group support to help<br />

participants determine a motivation for quitting that<br />

is meaningful and personal to them. Call 792-1245.<br />
