A Message from the
President of the Board
On behalf of the MPH Board of Trustees,
I would like to thank all of you whose names
appear in this report. Your generosity goes far
in enabling Manlius Pebble Hill to carry out its
mission. Over the 12 years that I have been
associated with MPH, I have been privileged to spend time with many
passionate supporters of the school – parents, friends, alumni, and students –
and all continue to tell me how strongly MPH has impacted their lives.
Parents comment on the safe learning environment and the School’s mission of
pursuing academic excellence. They are grateful for the fact their children go
on to excel in college and credit MPH with giving them the critical thinking
and time management skills that allow them to succeed in college and career.
Friends of MPH marvel at the School’s diversity and at the accomplishments of
our students. They are impressed by the number of our graduates who
complete college within four years, something that is becoming increasingly
uncommon.
Alumni remark on the ways the School influenced their current lives, often
recalling a particular teacher who inspired them or their shared friendships
with classmates. Many have told me that their successes in life are due in large
measure to their experience at MPH or Manlius or Pebble Hill. Current
students benefit greatly from the culture and diversity of MPH and they
appreciate a learning environment in which their teachers genuinely celebrate
their accomplishments and know them well enough to notice when they are
having a bad day. Students care about each other, too – not just in their own
grade, but across grades and divisions. Our School is truly a community in
which friendships last a lifetime.
I have watched over the years as alumni of Manlius, Pebble Hill, and MPH
come together at the annual clambake. I am always touched by their joy at
greeting classmates or teachers they have not seen in many years and, listening
to their reminiscences, I am always amazed by how quickly that time apart
melts away as memories flow and connections are reestablished.
We are closing in on our goal of building a new library media center. That
building will enhance our curriculum and provide a space that will greatly
facilitate learning. It will be a very proud day, indeed, for members of the MPH
community to be a part of the ground breaking ceremony for our new facility.
I hope that you will be able to say your generous contribution helped make this
vision a reality.

A TRADITION OF GIVING
The Manlius Pebble Hill Endowment Fund
Throughout the School’s history, we
have been fortunate in receiving
generous support from individuals,
families, and foundations whose gifts
make up Manlius Pebble Hill’s growing
Endowment Fund, which currently
stands at just under $4.5 million. The
growth from last year is due in large
part because MPH was the recipient of
a $2 million Malone Family
Foundation grant as noted in the
description listed on page 7.
The School’s Board of Trustees
oversees the investment of monies in
the Endowment Fund, interest from
which is used to support named
scholarships. At present, our
Endowment is small by private school
standards that suggest an endowment
at least three times a school’s operating
budget – for MPH, an endowment of
$27 million. Recognizing that it is
crucial to grow our Endowment Fund,
the Board of Trustees has earmarked
$2 million of the ongoing $6 million
capital campaign specifically for the
Endowment. It is the Endowment that
will protect the School in the event of
an unforeseen catastrophic event or
emergency situation. It is what will
ensure that the School continues as a
vital educational institution for future
generations of students.
Within the Endowment, there are
numerous individual funds, whose
descriptions are on the following pages.
Many of these funds were initiated in
the 1970s and 1980s upon the
retirement or passing of former faculty,
alumni, or friends. In some cases, we
are unable to ascertain from old
records the exact amount of the gifts
made to establish a particular fund.
A brief description of each of the
named funds follows, along with the
total amount of accumulated capital
for each. We have also recognized any
new donations made in the 2009-2010
year. For information about naming an

General Endowment Fund
A gift to the endowment is a great
way to insure that future students
continue to benefit from the MPH
educational experience. To name a
scholarship fund, our current policy
dictates a minimum contribution of
$100,000 for a full scholarship or
$50,000 for a half scholarship. This
endowed gift insures that funds are
available for the scholarship in
perpetuity.
General Memorial Fund
Gifts to the General Memorial Fund
honor friends and loved ones, and
provide lasting support to future
generations of Manlius Pebble Hill
students.

The Amos Scholarship
Given in support of Native American
students. An initial gift in 1993 from
John Amos ’33 was matched by
Manlius Pebble Hill School.

The Whitey Anderson
Scholarship
Established in the spring of 1977 to
honor Harold “Whitey” Anderson on
the occasion of his retirement from
Manlius Pebble Hill. In recognition of
this Fund, a $500 scholarship to
Manlius Pebble Hill is awarded each
year to an Upper School student who
shows particular promise in athletics.
At the 2009 Clambake, members of
The Manlius School Class of 1959
showed an interest in fundraising in
honor of their former coach. Their
hope is that the Whitey Anderson
Scholarship eventually has enough
funds to become an endowed full
scholarship.

Memorial Aid Scholarship
Created through a bequest from Mr.
and Mrs. James Dawley in honor of
their son, Lt. James H. Dawley, Jr. ’40,
an alumnus of Pebble Hill who was
killed while serving with the naval air
forces. A scholarship to has been
presented annually since 1998 to an
Upper School student who excels in
all areas of school life.

The David Edwards
Scholarship
Created in the spring of 1977 to
honor David Edwards, former head
of the English Department at The
Manlius School, on the occasion of
his retirement. Mr. Edwards passed
away in December of 1990 and, in
December of 1995, Mrs. Edwards
died. In their memories, a scholarship
is given each year to an Upper School
student who excels in the study of
English.

The Faculty Development
Fund
Initiated in 1983 with a gift from the
Edward E. Ford Foundation to
provide lasting funds for the
continued education and professional
development of faculty and staff.
Friends of the School matched the
original grant. The Edward E. Ford
Foundation later made another gift to
this Fund.

The Flag Scholarship
Begun in 1998 to provide scholarship
assistance specifically for children of
alumni of The Manlius School, Pebble
Hill School, or Manlius Pebble Hill
School to attend Manlius Pebble Hill.
With money in this fund, The
Manlius School flagpole was moved
to the Manlius Pebble Hill School
campus in 1999. Each year, a child of
an alumnus/ae is presented with the
Flag Scholarship.

Initiated in October of 1980 in
memory of young Glynis George
Kelly, a former student at Manlius
Pebble Hill School who was tragically

The Goodyear-Burlingame
Scholarship
Established in May of 2001 in honor
of The Goodyear-Burlingame School,
a local private school, which closed in
1956. Alumni from this school have
made gifts to this fund with the hope
that it will collect sufficient funds to

(formerly the MPH Lower School
Library Fund) is given to the Senior
at commencement who best
exemplifies the “5 Cs” – cooperation,
consideration, confidence, concern,
and courtesy. This award is presented
in honor of former Lower School
Head Martha Heer, who was the
embodiment of the “5 Cs” and who
initiated their integration into MPH
culture. Following her recent passing,
Mrs. Heer’s family and friends
established the memorial fund that
makes this award possible. Mrs. Heer
devoted more than three decades of
her life to the education of MPH
students, and it is the School’s hope
that contributions to this fund will
enable it to grow into a fully-endowed
MPH scholarship.

Scholarship
Established in December of 2000
through a gift made by Robert J.
Smutny, former faculty member of
The Manlius School. A scholarship is
presented each year in memory of Mr.
Smutny’s Manlius School colleague,

faculty member of The Manlius
School.

Given by John ’47A and Dorothy
Lenore. This scholarship is given in
honor of John P. Lenore ’47A, an
alumnus of The Manlius School, to a

Scholarship
Created in April of 1989 by Elizabeth
Knox in memory of her husband,
James Henry Knox, alumnus of The
Manlius School. A Knox Scholar is
named each year.

Established in April of 1978 in
memory of young David Lauffer, a
former student at Manlius Pebble Hill
School. An award is given each year to
a Manlius Pebble Hill student who
excels in music.

Malone Family Foundation
Scholarship
In May of 2010, Manlius Pebble Hill
School was awarded a $2 million
endowment grant by the Coloradobased
Malone Family Foundation.
The grant will be used exclusively to
provide scholarships to new students
in Grades 7 – 12 who are in the top
five percent of their class and in need
of financial assistance.
The first school in New York State
ever to receive a grant from the
Malone Family Foundation, MPH
immediately put that funding to
work, offering a scholarship to a
bright, talented young woman
without the financial resources to
afford an independent school
education. The School’s first Malone
scholar this fall joined Manlius Pebble
Hill’s Ninth Grade.
Grant monies will be invested so that
Malone scholarships, which will grow
in number in succeeding years, may
continue to be awarded in perpetuity.
The Malone scholarship program is
additional to the School’s existing
Crosby merit scholarship program
and to the more than $1 million
Manlius Pebble Hill provides annually
in need-based tuition grants.

The Fay McCarthy Fund
Established in October of 1980 to
honor the former barber at The
Manlius School, Fay McCarthy. A
scholarship is given to a student who
exemplifies the ideals of Manlius.

Classics Chair Fund
Established in December of 2002 in
honor of Torrance Rugh, former
faculty member and coach at The

interest from this fund has allowed us
to add a Latin faculty member, and
ensure that Latin is taught in
perpetuity at this School.

School. The Bernard Shaw Honors in

Each year, an award is given in honor

Pledges to Our Promise to the Future:
A Campaign for Manlius Pebble Hill School
MPH’s current capital campaign has a goal of raising $6 million. As of June 30, 2010 just under $4 million has been raised in
pledges, making this the most successful capital campaign in the School’s history. To date, the Laurie Mezzalingua ’86 Center
for Early Learning was constructed with $2 million, $2 million will fund construction of a library media center, and $2 million
will be added to the School’s endowment.
Efforts are underway to educate each member of the MPH community on the importance of the capital campaign and enlist
