Finance Council GIVING IN THE WORKPLACE An Easy Way to Support the Junior League of Baltimore By Mary Helfrich Fall is the time when you can help to make the Junior League of Baltimore #1 on your, your family’s and your friends’ charitable giving list. As in the past, the Junior League of Baltimore can continue to be designated as your specific charity of choice on your United Way pledge card. This year, we are excited to announce that we were also accepted to the Maryland Charity Campaign! The Maryland Charity Campaign allows Maryland State Employees and Retirees to designate our organization in their workplace giving. The Maryland Charity Campaign began September 11th and runs through November 20th. United Way’s official solicitation period also runs each fall, so now is the time to get involved! The Junior League of Baltimore’s Maryland Charity Campaign number is 1096 and our United Way number is 1812. Call a friend, send an e-mail, or write it down! Let everyone know they can use these numbers to make a donation and help the Junior League of Baltimore continue to make a positive impact in the Baltimore Community. Giving a gift to the Junior League of Baltimore through payroll deduction is one of the most efficient ways to give. It allows you to give in small increments throughout the year, which enables you to give more than you could when writing one check. It is a simple, easy task – just fill out your employers’ pledge card and designate the Junior League of Baltimore to receive your donation. If the Junior League of Baltimore is not listed, ask if you can write it in on the pledge form. Federal, state, and county government and U.S. military personnel working in Maryland can give to the Junior League through a workplace giving campaign. Some corporations, businesses and nonprofits offer campaigns as well. Check with your employer to see if they participate. This year, the Junior League of Baltimore’s Annual Fund and United Way combined goal is $27,500. Please help us to reach this goal by designating your Maryland Charity Campaign or United Way payroll designation to the Junior League of Baltimore! Thank you! Headquarters Building Update AND THE WALLS CAME TUMBLING DOWN… By Carol Goodman & Maria Johnson, Co-Chairs, Headquarters Committee Sound the trumpets! Share the news! The Junior League of Baltimore’s new Wise Penny and Headquarters project is underway! We kicked off the summer with much celebration when over 100 Junior League of Baltimore members, friends, donors, politicians and Wise Penny shoppers joined us as we “broke ground” on our future. In late August, the real action began as trucks moved into gear, sledge hammers were swung and what was once the Wise Penny came tumbling down. At this point, the bulk of the interior demolition is complete, the back grassy area has been leveled, gravel poured, and testing pits dug. Drive by and take a look at all that has happened, and you will begin to see the vision emerge of what will soon be our future home. Begin dreaming with us as you help chart the course of how we will use this new fabulous space to further our mission in the Baltimore community. Imagine how we can use this new home to increase Wise Penny sales, to grow membership, to partner with others in the community, to increase programming options for community projects and to solidify our mark as a service organization in a city we have served for 95 years. Over the coming months, watch for the benchmarks of construction and prepare to celebrate with us in early summer 2008 as we open the doors of our new home. LARKS INVITED TO JUNIOR LEAGUE NATIONAL CONCERT The Junior League of Baltimore’s own Larks choral group has been invited to attend a fabulous event, the Junior League Choral Groups First Ever National Concert! Hosted by the Junior League of Birmingham, Alabama, the concert will take place April 10- 13, 2008. This gathering promises to allow the Larks to learn about other JL choral groups: what they do, how they’re organized, and who they serve. In addition, the weekend culminates with a concert at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, where all the Junior League choral groups will sing a commissioned song together. Each group present will also sing a song of their choice. By Polly Behrens “The Larks are excitedly making plans to attend the national concert, and it would be great to have support from our league!” says co-chair Polly Behrens. Registration forms, details on travel and hotel accommodations, and an informational packet are being mailed from Birmingham. More information will be provided soon. Come to Birmingham, applaud your Larks, and enjoy a terrific concert! Celebrating 50 years of service this year, Larks is the longest running project of the Junior League of Baltimore and it is believed to be the longest running project of all the Junior Leagues in the United States. Members of the Larks provide recreational and emotional support to the elderly, disabled and people in need through the “gift of song”. (To obtain the upcoming Larks schedule, or request the Larks to sing for your event or group, e-mail larks@jlbalt.org.) Members of the Larks gathered at Jimmy’s in Fell’s Point at a very early 5:45am Monday morning, September 24th to sing their a cappella version of “Manic Monday”, to rave reviews by WJZ’s Ron Matz, as part of the Junior League’s 95th anniversary celebration Junior League of Baltimore 9 Communiqué
