Adding Decimals<br />

Decimals are added the same way whole numbers are added. To add decimals,<br />

line up the decimal points and add as you would whole numbers.<br />

For example: Add 24.29 + 12.95.<br />

1. Write the question so the decimal points are lined up.<br />

2. Add the hundredths.<br />

3. Add the tenths.<br />

4. Add the whole numbers.<br />

5. Line up the decimal points.<br />

Remember : Any whole number is understood to have a decimal point at its<br />

right. You can add zeros to the right so it is easier to add.<br />

For example: 16 + 2.005.<br />

16.000<br />

2.005<br />

18.005<br />

Estimating the Sum of Two Decimals<br />

How do you estimate a sum by rounding<br />

1. Round each decimal term that will be added.<br />

2. Add the rounded terms.<br />
