Check to see if the above are equivalent fractions. Remember: Cross-multiply<br />

• 2 x 15 = 30 5 x 6 = 30<br />

• 2 x 20 = 40 5 x 8 = 40<br />

Sometimes you are asked to complete a fraction in higher terms. Then you are<br />

given just part of a value.<br />

For example: Complete in higher terms.<br />

1. Ask what was done to the 4 to equal 16 It was multiplied by 4.<br />

2. Always do the same to both terms. If you multiply the denominator by 4,<br />

you must multiply the numerator by 4.<br />

3. Now multiply the 3 by 4 to get 12.<br />

4. Cross-multiply to see if this is an equivalent fraction. 3 x 16 = 48<br />

4 x 12 =48<br />

5. They are equivalent.<br />
