The Basic Skills<br />

Basic skills are needed to do math questions correctly. These skills are adding,<br />

subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. These skills are used with whole<br />

numbers, fractions, decimals and percents. You need to know the basic facts<br />

really well in order to do the more difficult math problems.<br />

It is important to do math question step by step. Watch for the signs +, -. ×, and ÷<br />

and read and reread the question to know exactly what you are trying to solve.<br />

These symbols are used in many math questions:<br />

• Is less than <<br />

• Is greater than ><br />

• Is equal to =<br />

• Is not equal to ≠<br />

Addition<br />

The sign for addition is + and it is called a plus sign. This sign tells us to add.<br />

The answer is called a sum or a total.<br />

Let’s take 456 + 289.<br />
