Pula’s amphitheatre, the largest monument<br />

dating from the 1st century AD, initially designed<br />

for gladiatorial combat, today is a world famous<br />

concert and festival venue. The Brijuni National<br />

Park, an archipelago comprising 14 isles, and<br />

which is reached by an easy boat journey from<br />

Fažana, is a priceless monument of cultural and<br />

historical heritage, as well as being a veritable<br />

treasure trove of flora and fauna.<br />

Located 14 km south-east of Buzet is the tiny,<br />

medieval town of Hum, the centre of old-Slavic,<br />

Glagolitic script, and home to precious 12th<br />

century frescoes. The town - a monument of<br />

medieval urban structure - has been officially<br />

The church of St. Euphemia, ranked among the<br />

most beautiful edifices of the Baroque period<br />

in Istria, dominates the small coastal town of<br />

Rovinj. St. Euphemia is the patron saint of the<br />

The Velebit Nature Park covers the entire<br />

mountain of Velebit. The matchless quality of<br />

karstic forms, landscapes and the living world<br />

are the reasons why the UN issued a Charter<br />

declaring the North Velebit Nature Park a<br />

world biosphere reserve. The centre of the<br />

park is located in Krasno, one of the great<br />

Marian sanctuaries situated at an altitude of<br />

Located in the western part of the island of<br />

Mljet, the most richly wooded island in the<br />

The fortification complex dating from the 14th<br />

century, quite unique in its length of 5.5 km<br />

and its monumentality, together with defence<br />

structures and urban layout. The walls begin<br />

and end with the fortresses of Koruna in<br />

Mali ston and Veliki kaštio in Ston. The most<br />

monumental fortification is Bartolomeo, which<br />

The abundant waters that the River Sava brings<br />

down from the Alps and the Dinaric mountains flood<br />

the meadows and forests of the Lonja range, thus<br />

Standing where once rose a medieval<br />

fortification is the castle in Baroque-cum-<br />

Classicist style, built in 1804 by the Pejačević<br />

family, according to the design of the<br />

Viennese architect, Roth. Today, the castle<br />

houses a museum, while the park surrounding<br />

it is a protected monument of nature.<br />

This well preserved medieval fortress is<br />

interesting as a monument of turbulent times<br />

in the past, but is also attractive in both its<br />

appearance and its location on the banks<br />

of the Rivers Kupa and Sava, surrounded by<br />

broad meadows.<br />

This Baroque castle was built in 1771-1777 by<br />

Count A. Janković, on whose estate subsequently<br />

rose the town of Daruvar. In the wonderful<br />

atmosphere of the wine cellars beneath the<br />

castle one can enjoy a glass (or why not two?) of<br />

Graševina – the superb wine of Daruvar.<br />

Turopolje is an area located in the valley of the River<br />

Sava, south of Zagreb, which has been permanently<br />

inhabited since prehistoric times. The specific<br />

features of the Turopolje of our time are its preserved<br />

wooden chapels and noble curias. The oldest exhibit<br />

in the Turopolje Museum is a mammoth tusk which<br />

dates back to 10,000 BC.<br />

The town of Rab, with its four Romanesque<br />

Lubenice, a small, stone-built village, perched<br />

With its seven travertine waterfalls and a total<br />

fall of 242 metres, the largest travertine barrier<br />

in Europe – the famous Skradinski buk – this<br />

A military fortification that grew out of<br />

the early-Croatian cultural heritage of the<br />

Mediterranean, the Kornati are the<br />

continuation of Telašćica Nature Park which,<br />

This unique monument of European sacral<br />

architecture has been included in the UNESCO<br />

World Heritage List and was the most<br />

significant architectural creation of 15th- and<br />

The Museum of the primeval man of Krapina<br />

presents the world of our distant ancestors<br />

Rising on the mountain of Kalnik are the<br />

remains of the medieval town of Kalnik, built<br />

A forest-covered mountain rising above Zagreb<br />

with kilometres of mountaineering trails, and<br />

the Sljeme skiing centre. Among its other<br />

The Kopački rit Nature Park is a unique<br />

wetlands reserve, one of the largest<br />

spawning grounds in Central Europe, and a<br />

The unique charater of the preserved geological<br />

and biological features, and the authenticity of<br />

its cultural characteristics, ensure that the Papuk<br />

Nature Park became the only UNESCO geo-park<br />

in Croatia. The Count’s educational trail, the giant,<br />

The romantic old core of the city gained its<br />

basic contours at the start of the 18th (the<br />

Baroque) century. It is a combination of a<br />

military fortification and organized civic life.<br />

The only still-preserved parts of the once<br />

The name of “Ergela” was first mentioned in 1506,<br />

although it was founded back in the 13th century.<br />

From the 19th century the farm was breeding<br />

only Lipizzaner horses, and its success earned<br />

it widespread fame. Today, Ergela possesses<br />

exceptionally valuable genetic material which is<br />

classed as a cultural treasure of Croatia.<br />

The 18th-century Brod Fortress ranks among<br />

the largest fortifications in Croatia. The<br />

Baroque Franciscan monastery, still well<br />

preserved, is one of the most striking<br />

buildings of the Baroque period in Slavonia,<br />

monastery architecture in northern Croatia.<br />

The walls of the fortress, the castle of the<br />

Odescalchi princes, with its Renaissance park<br />

architecture, the church and the monastery of<br />

St. John of Capistrano, are all a part of the well<br />

preserved urban complex in the easternmost<br />

Croatian town of Ilok.<br />

<strong>General</strong> <strong>information</strong> about Croatia<br />

Mainland surface area: 56,594 km 2 ; Area of territorial waters: 31,067 km 2 . Population: 4,437,460. Composition<br />

of nationalities: the majority of the population are Croats, the largest minorities are Serbs, Bosnians, Slovenes,<br />

Hungarians, Czechs, Italians, and Albanians. System of government: Multi-party Parliamentary Republic. Capital:<br />

Zagreb (population: 779,145). Length of coastline: 5,835.30 km, of which 4,058 km comprise the coastlines of islands,<br />

reefs and crags. Number of islands, reefs and crags: 1185; forty-seven islands are permanently inhabited. Highest<br />

peak: Dinara 1,831 m/asl. Climate: In the interior of the country the climate is moderately warm and rainy; on the<br />

highest peaks a snowy forest climate prevails, while in the area along the Adriatiac coast it is a pleasant Mediterranean<br />

climate with many sunny days. Average temperature in continental parts in January is 0-2 0 C, somewhat lower at the<br />

highest altitudes above sea level; in August it is about 20 0 C, and about 12 o C on the highest peaks. Average temperature<br />

in the littoral: January 5-9 o C, while in August it is between 22 and 25 0 C. In winter average sea temperature in January<br />

is 12 0 C, and in summer about 25 0 C. Currency: The official currency is the kuna (100 lipa 1 kuna). Foreign currency may<br />

be exchanged in banks, exchange offices, at ATMs, post offices, in the majority of tourist agencies, hotels and camp<br />

sites. Credit cards (Eurocard/Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners) are accepted in almost all hotels, marinas,<br />

restaurants, retail outlets and ATMs.<br />

<strong>General</strong> <strong>information</strong><br />

Travel documents: A valid passport or some other identification document recognised by international agreement;<br />

for certain countries a personal identity card is sufficient (i.e. a document which testifies to the identity and citizenship<br />

harmonised with the regulations and standards of EU member states, but the value of objects of non-commercial<br />

character for personal use allowed to be brought into the country without tax duty or PDV (VAT) is limited to 300 HRK<br />

(kuna). The entry of all meat, dairy and other products of animal origin exceeding the total weight of 1kg is subject to<br />

veterinary inspection at the border crossing. The amount of wine that can be brought in is limited to a maximum of 5<br />

litres per passenger. Foreign and local currency and cheques may be freely taken in and out of the country by foreign<br />

and Croatian citizens with residence abroad, but the transfer of an amount exceeding 40,000 kuna must be declared<br />

to a customs official. Valuable professional equipment and technical devices must also be declared to a customs official<br />

at the border crossing. PDV is refunded to foreign nationals when leaving the country for individual goods purchased<br />

in Croatia, for amounts in excess of 500 HRK, upon the presentation of a PDV-P, or rather a “Tax-cheque” form verified<br />

pets: The control of import of house pets (up to five animals) for non-commercial purpose, in company of their owner<br />

or person authorized by the owner, is being carried out by the staff of the Customs Service in accordance with the<br />

above mentioned Book of Rules. The owner shall be able to enter the Republic of Croatia with her/his pet(s) through<br />

all the border crossings at which the customs office is present. According to the said Book of Rules coordinated with<br />

the Decree 998/2003/EZ, dogs, cats and tame polecat (Mustela putorius) now entering the Republic of Croatia must<br />
