Welcome
to the new Season 2013-2014
Once again it is my pleasure to introduce this edition of the
handbook with a warm welcome to you all whether you are a
player, umpire, coach, helper or volunteer. As you will see the
Club continues to thrive and prosper on the playing side as
we expand to 8 Men’s teams and 5 Women’s teams alongside
our 2 Badgers teams and not forgetting our 2 Veteran s X1’s!
You will note that there are some changes to the handbook
this year designed to give you a more complete picture of our
club so I hope that these appeal to you as I am sure that all
of you will read every word - if only !! At the very least take
note of the success of our ever increasing Junior Section
especially at national level of our Girl’s U10’s and U12’s.
As ever we are grateful to all our advertisers whose copy helps
to make this venture viable and especially to our principal
sponsor McDonald’s many thanks once again.
A Club the size of ours could not continue to be viable without
the commitment of so many people at all levels giving so much
time and effort on a voluntary basis to
ensure our continued success.
Please all of you take this as a
personal thank you from me
and enjoy the forthcoming
season.
Club History est 1892
With many thanks to Ron Lane (former President & Secretary) who collated the early Club history.
The Early Days
The inspiration to form a hockey club in Worcester came initially from the officers stationed at
Norton Barracks. They had a team but no one to play against regularly so they approached
W.E.Wyatt of Worcester who picked up this suggestion with enthusiasm and WHC came into
being. These very early days were not without considerable difficulties due mainly to a paucity
of members and a scarcity of teams to play. However slowly but surely other new clubs were
formed at Pershore, Leominster, Bridgnorth and Kidderminster so something approaching
a proper fixture list was established. Finding a suitable home ground also proved problematic
until 1902 when WHC became established at the old county ground at Boughton – an
excellent venue. Here the Club prospered and soon a second and third team came into being.
Post 1914-1918 War
Following a state of suspended animation during the war, the Club was restarted in September
1919. Whilst the membership held up once the ground at Boughton was no longer available
a period of unsatisfactory ground arrangements ensued with the Club at one point being in
danger of folding. Happily survival was achieved by securing the use of a pitch at Perdiswell.
Post 1939-1945 War
After a war-time lapse the Club was again reformed though finding a secure, suitable home
ground proved as difficult as ever and it was not until 1962-63 that agreement was reached
with the Old Elizabethans’ Association to use their cricket ground at Perdiswell on a regular
basis. This brought a period of welcome stability. By the time I joined the Club in 1968 there
were four men’s sides. Two years later we had grown to six teams. In 1979 the Worcester
Ladies Hockey Club joined with us.
1983 saw a major development for the Club when we joined forces with a cricket club and a
shooting club to become Worcester Norton Sports Club with pitches and a clubhouse located –
would you believe at Norton Barracks. A return home indeed! The Club continued to thrive there
for the next 20 years but the advent of artificial grass surfaces meant that a change of venue was
necessary so we had to sever our connection with WNSC and with the support of Worcester City
Council we established ourselves at the Nunnery Wood Sports Complex for the next seven years.
This period of stability came to an end when the decision was taken to close the bar - which was
primarily our after match tea facility- but we continue to use the pitches here alongside our use
of the facilities at the University with whom we now have very welcome close links.
p4
The Club Today, Tomorrow & the Future ...
We are well established as one of the major hockey clubs in Worcestershire. Secretly many of
us believe we are the major club! As our Chairman said in his Annual report to the AGM in
March ‘The club….. is in a strong and enviable position within Midlands. We have thriving
sections, fed with a stream of very talented youngsters ably coached and guided through our
Junior and Badger structures. We are now looking to build on this further and have entered a
Men’s 8th team and a Women’s 5th team in their respective leagues for the 2013-2014
season’. Our junior section now numbers some 250 youngsters under the age of 18 and their
success is outlined in the team results section which follows. Not forgetting our Vets section
who are very active and regularly able to put out 2 teams.
It is important to note that in 2004 we achieved a notable landmark when we were the first
Club in the area to gain ClubFirst Status. Thus we have national recognition as a Club that is
run responsibly and is able to demonstrate best practice in providing for young people.
We continue to be pleased with our developing association with the University of Worcester
whose facilities we use every Saturday for matches and during the week for training and
Veterans matches and with whom we engage in the provision of Hockey Scholarships.
Our after match teas and social interaction are well looked after by Guy and Kirsten who
run the ‘Wheatsheaf’. Their pub may be small in size but the hospitality and the friendly
atmosphere is much appreciated.
So where do we go from here To quote our Chairman again the Club is at a point in its
development when we need to decide whether ‘we all want to get WHC into a position where
it can be more of its own master ... I am talking about local partnerships that might result in
a 2 artificial pitch/clubhouse development or WHC obtaining land,
funding and sponsorship for our own pitches and clubhouse.’ An
enormous challenge – yes indeed - but other clubs have had
the vision, energy and drive to achieve this so why not US!
Hence we see ourselves as a Club with a distinguished
past, a dynamic present and an exciting future. I am very
proud to be the President of this famous Club and do
hope that this handbook will further enthuse you to join
and to play a full part in the life of the Club.
Junior Section
Report précis from Mary Travers - presented to the AGM, March 2013
This has been one of our best junior seasons ever,
with four Girls teams reaching regional finals and the
U10s and U12s being victorious. The U12s went on
to finish as national runners-up, losing out to
Surbiton only on sudden death penalty strokes! Our
boys teams competed at all age levels and while their
achievements were not as notable as the girls there
was a marked improvement in participation and
organisation of the boys’ teams this season so many
thanks indeed to all the coaches and managers who
made this possible.
Overall our membership has continued to grow, and
to accommodate this we’ve expanded our coaching
on Sundays at Nunnery Wood, now running two 1.5
hour sessions for U10s and 10-13 year olds. Yet
again many of our members have progressed through
the Junior Academy Centres (JACs) to the Junior
Performance Centres (JPCs) (County level) and the
club is very well represented especially in the Girls
county teams. Many congratulations to two of our
youngsters who have achieved national recognition -
Dan Ferrier played for Wales at U18 level and
Matthew Gill played in goal for Wales U16 ‘s.
We could not have sustained our very high level of
activity this year in junior hockey without the great
response we’ve had from the club’s senior players
and others who have coached, managed and
umpired at locations far and wide. Therefore, huge
thanks go to Catherine Hurley (the club’s Junior
Administrator, manager Girls U14s, and numerous
other roles), and to Paul Merrell (Junior Head Coach
and coach for the U16 girls, again not to mention all
his other coaching roles). We are also indebted to
Nick Fielden and Phil Preston who coached the U10s
and U12s girls respectively on their way to regional
and national glory. As ever there are many, many
others who have made a very significant contribution
this year but space does not allow for all of you to be
mentioned by name. Your commitment and efforts
are nevertheless very much appreciated.
On the wider front, the club joined up with the
University of Worcester and the local School Sports
Partnership (SSP) to launch a 6-week coaching
programme for children from state primary schools at
the university pitch. This was very successful and it
is hoped that it will be only the start of a bigger
programme to offer real opportunities to children
from the state school sector to play hockey and move
into a club setting. We are very grateful to Craig
Williams and colleagues at the university for all their
support and to the university for providing the pitch
free of charge, to the university students who
coached these sessions and to Kate Rodgman from
the SSP who provided the vital links with the schools.
Disciplinary Code
• Yellow cards. If a player receives 3 yellow cards in a season
she/he faces a 2 match ban. This will apply only to league games.
Clubman & Clubwoman of the year
Congratulations to Clubman of the year
Paul Crump
Paul has been a stalwart of the Severners for some years;
he joined the club in 2006-7 and took over captaincy from Vince
Smith last season. He brought to this role an infectious blend of
great commitment and much humour amply demonstrated by
his unique match reports detailing the achievements of the ship
(team) at his command and his very detailed and amusing End
of Season report which ran to three pages of A4 script! Paul has
thus done much to both consolidate the strength of our 7th X1
and to ensure that as a Club we can run the 8th X1 this coming
season on an even firmer basis. Paul has indeed been a true
Clubman; a team player; an enthusiastic captain; an organiser
of quiz nights and an engaging personality. Sadly his business
commitments mean he will be leaving us soon so we wish him
well upon his move to Cornwall.
Congratulations to Clubwoman of the year
Catherine Hurley
Catherine has been the Administrator of our Junior Section since
2008-9 season. Since then it has almost doubled in size to
some 250 young people. Her commitment to this crucial role
has been legendary, involving: attendance at Nunnery Wood
Sports Complex every Sunday morning throughout the season;
registration of all these juniors; liaison with their parents;
arranging with the coaches that there are teams to play in the
huge number of junior tournaments plus the right kit, umpires
and transport to ensure all goes well, not forgetting mopping up
the odd tear and minor injury all with a smile and endless
encouragement !! But this is not all, for Catherine regularly
organises a fund-raising event at the Worcester Warriors
Stadium and the very successful Annual Junior Presentation
Evening. No wonder Catherine is looking for an assistant for the
forthcoming season !!
