FOR THE FALLEN
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England’s foam.
But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.
As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.
The Ode comes from ‘For the Fallen’, a poem by the English poet
and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in London in the
Winnowing Fan; Poems of the Great War 1914.

STATE COUNCIL
RSL NSW
President’s Report
Don Rowe OAM
I have much pleasure in introducing you to the new
formatted RSL Annual Report.
As you can see there has been a number of major
changes in the report this year, including the
financial statements and accounts, which was
agreed to by Congress to show the financial
statements in graphs and pie charts. I am sure this
makes it easier to comprehend the true financial
statements and position of the New South Wales
RSL. All the figures that are usually presented in
our Annual Report can easily be found on our
website.
The new format also looks at, month by month,
some of the major events which occurred
throughout the year. So, this year my report will not
go into fine detail as I have done in previous years.
As is the custom of RSL NSW, I had the opportunity
to attend and represent the League at a great
number of commemoration services and sub-
Branch functions throughout the year. I continue to
see that all our commemoration services are
extremely well attended.
Special thanks to Northern Country Vice President,
Mr Bob Crosthwaite OAM, for standing in as Acting
State President in my absence for ANZAC Day. I
had the pleasure of representing the RSL and the
NSW at the ANZAC Day Services in Ieper, Belgium.
I am pleased to report that the RSL continues to
strive forward with numerous initiatives being
achieved. As our CEO/State Secretary mentions in
his report the Strategic Plan is playing a major role
not only State Branch/State Council level but I am
pleased to say at District Council and sub-Branch
level.
In October we held a meeting with the District
Council Presidents and in accordance with
Corporate Governance we have tasked our District
Council Presidents to help along with their sub-
Branches with our Strategic Plan. District Councils
and sub-Branches will play a major role in ensuring
that we continue to go ahead into the future
together.
State Council authorized PricewaterhouseCoopers
consultants to investigate and work with us to
ensure that we as State Branch and sub-Branches
continue to comply with tax regulations that are laid
down for not-for-profit charities. It is essential that
we continue to retain that status. This report, and
work needed will continue onto 2012.
The other major issue is in regard to the Not-For-
Profit Commission which was put into place in the
announcements of the Federal Government’s
budget. As yet we are unable to confirm the impact
of this Commission. However, I envisage this will
also require a great deal of effort and work to
ensure that we comply with the yet to be written
rules. There are a number of challenges facing the
League and a lot of those are legal requirements,
which unfortunately are continually being changed
and continue to make the workload of all involved
ever increasing.
Sadly, we continue to see our wonderful veterans
disappearing in our membership of sub-Branches.
The World War II Members have been for many
years the main stay keeping a great organization
running so successfully. It is pleasing to note that
we are seeing more and more younger Members
accepting the role of executive members of our
sub-Branches and District Councils and also
becoming members of our State Council.
In conclusion, I sincerely thank our membership for
their great work, effort and for the time they have
volunteered to ensure that we go forward not only
for the Centenary of ANZAC 2015 but the for
Centenary of the League itself in 2016.
My special thanks and appreciation to members of
State Council who continue to work tirelessly with
great guidance and understanding of where the
League needs to be and more importantly, how we
will get there. I am sure I speak on behalf of all
Members of the League in extending our thanks
and appreciation to the State Secretary staff at
ANZAC House for their hard work and dedication to
our Members and the future of the League.
17
STATE COUNCIL
RSL NSW
Treasurer’s Report
Rod White AM, RFD
On behalf of the RSL State Council, I am pleased to
present a summary of the audited financial
statements of The Returned and Services League
of Australia (New South Wales Branch) for the year
ended 31 st December 2011.
Within this Annual Report, there is a summary of
key financial performance data for the State Branch
presented in a graphical format. Financial
statements in detail for RSL State Branch can be
viewed at the RSL website, in addition to the RSL
Central Council of Women’s Auxiliaries, NSW RSL
Youth Council, Reginald William Coward Trust, St
Marys RSL Memorial Fund and ANZAC House
Trust.
State Branch is intensely involved in a review of its
functioning within the financial system to ensure
both it and sub-Branches are in full compliance with
government legislation, currently and what is
proposed for the not-for-profit sector. Elected
officers at all levels have an obligation to fully assist
with total compliance in all respects and where any
doubt may exist, they should make immediate
contact with State Branch.
Trustees, Treasurers, in fact all elected officers are
encouraged to bring about a greater focus within
their sub-Branches on the importance of RSL
Charities and the functioning of RSL State Branch
when considering any donations. It appears that
this is the last area of consideration by some, rather
than as a priority, evaluating how a sub-Branch can
assist with the improved effectiveness of our own
operations.
It is unimaginable that an RSL sub-Branch would
not contribute to RSL Charities when in fact such
donations are deployed elsewhere. Without this
support from our sub-Branches especially from
those with available assets, we will be at risk of not
fully meeting our aims and objectives through the
fair distribution of our own wealth with a focus on
shared equity. Each sub-Branch should consider
how it can support RSL Charities and other State
Branch programmes, regardless of the level of
support it may be able to provide.
The overall result for the period was a net surplus
of $1,015,350 with net assets increasing to
$39,428,934. Whilst this represents a good result
overall, it must be appreciated that without the
surplus provided by the Hyde Park Inn, the actual
viability of RSL State Branch would be seen in a
less viable position.
Through a firm focus on operational costs without
suppressing real opportunities, State Branch has
very effectively managed its responsibilities in an
increasingly challenging environment.
RSL State Council extends its appreciation to all
involved.
STATE BRANCH
RSL NSW
Chief Executive Officer’s Report
Chris Perrin
By the close of 2011, the year had proved to have
been a good year for the League in NSW. Many
achievements were made at all levels of RSL NSW
and the foundations have been laid for a bright and
prosperous future.
The highlights, in a nutshell were, the RSL NSW
Strategic Plan 2011 - 2016 was released; RSL
visited the troops in a war zone for the first time
since the Vietnam War; RSL continued to provide
assistance to ADF members to fill in gaps in the
provision of services or financial assistance in times
of great hardship; the RSL Corps of Guards was
formed and the first intake of 20 Guardians on Duty
was inducted to the Corps; District Council
Presidents met and decided to embrace the
Strategic Plan and vowed to take the lead in
modernising and reinvigorating the League in NSW
and many RSL sub-Branches took active and
positive steps to increase their membership
numbers.
Membership continues to be our need for focus as
without Members, we fail our mates and the
community in achieving all that is expected of us.
The League is relied upon to be actively engaged
in standing up for our Defence Force, being
responsible for commemoration in many
communities, to lobby for veterans' entitlements
and act as the charity for serving & ex-serving men
and women right across this great state of ours.
Members have asked State Branch for strategies,
tools and resources to assist in the recruitment of
like minded folk to march with us on our journey to
uphold the aims and objects of the League. The
Strategic Plan will guide us down this path and with
diligence, innovation and good old fashioned hard
work we will see the benefits of RSL membership
becoming more widely known and appreciated.
In a lot of cases the first, (and sometimes the last)
contact with perspective members is at sub-Branch
level. Here we have to be welcoming to younger
members, tolerant of their differences, embracing of
the mixed gender nature of today's ADF. We should
be able to display our genuine and sincere desire
to help all those who need our help, not just those
from our community, or unit, Corps, ship, squadron
or service as ourselves. Inclusiveness, innovation
and sincerity will overcome all barriers put up in the
past, whether perceived or factual. With the
centenary of the League looming ahead of us in
2016 lets's make sure your sub-Branch is acting
like this or stepping around those who cannot see
the benefit of relevancy, inclusiveness, innovation,
honesty, sincerity and willingness to be part of the
solution, not the cause of the problem.
Remember the predicted membership numbers
diagram below from the Strategic Plan - let's get on
the road up - now, not tomorrow.
STATE BRANCH
RSL NSW
Chief Financial Officer’s Report
Annette Mulliner OAM
I recently provided auditing services for eight of our
sub-Branches; Alstonville, Belmore, Brooklyn,
Eumungarie Coboco, Narrandera, Narromine,
Sussex Inlet and Woodenbong. None of these sub-
Branches have large financial assets but they were
still able to provide support for their Members,
conduct commemorative services, maintain war
memorials and war graves, all continuing to support
the ideals and objectives of the League that were
established nearly a century ago.
The recent PricewaterhouseCoopers review of our
sub-Branches income tax exemption status, which
will be presented at the 2012 Annual State
Congress, will address this issue of sub-Branches
charitable activities.
The Hyde Park Inn Motel provides State Branch
with an income stream through the payment of rent
and administration fees; in 2011 this totalled
$1,066,020.
To ensure the Motel continues to provide this
support the Motel needs to maintain a high
standard of accommodation and service. The Motel
is mid-way through an upgrade with the
refurbishment of all bathrooms; replacement of the
soft furnishings; a new hot water system and noise
reduction works to the rooms. Thank you to our
Members for their positive comments on these
improvements.
2011 was a year of “steady as you go” for the State
Branch. But this will change in 2012 with the
establishment of the Federal Government’s
Australian Not-For-Profit Commission and in 2013
there will be the introduction of the new statutory
definition of a charity.
The establishment of this Commission will result in
enormous changes for the League and we are
waiting for final details of the legislation. The
Commission will have three main areas –
• Reporting framework – financial and
governance reporting by charities;
• Information portal – a searchable database
for the public and a “one stop” gateway for
charities; and
• Education and advice to charities.
We will certainly be providing to all sub-Branches
full details of how the introduction of the Australian
Not-For-Profit Commission will affect their activities
and reporting requirements.
AUSTRALIAN
FORCES
OVERSEAS
FUND
RSL AFOF
Secretary’s Review
John Boyle
In 2011, RSL AFOF provided
parcels to serving members of
the Australian Defence Force
and Australian Federal Police
posted overseas. The majority
of these personnel serve in
peacemaking missions on a six
month rotation basis and to
ensure that each receives the
benefit of a package during
their period of service, the
packages are made available
for delivery twice yearly. These
packages are loosely referred
to as the mid-year and
Christmas packages.
In 2011, RSL AFOF (NSW
Division) commitment to the
support of serving ADF
members overseas continued:
HMAS Toowoomba and HMAS
Melbourne on Operation Slipper
were provided with Satellite TV
services and RSL AFOF (NSW
Division) paid for the Cultural
tours for the ships’ crews when
in port.
Afghanistan - RSL AFOF (NSW
Division) helped pay for the
restoration of the Memorial at
Tarin Kot and the issuing of
Challenge Coins to all serving
members serving in
Afghanistan on Remembrance
Day, 11/11/11.
The Middle East - provided
fitness equipment to the RAAF
personal serving in Al Minhad
(AMAB – the RAAF Base in
Dubai).
The Sinai - AUSCON
Multinational Force and
Observers Sinai, Egypt where
equipment, which was paid for
by RSL AFOF (NSW Division),
was provided so as they could
celebrate Australia Day and
have ongoing recreational
equipment.
This ongoing support has led to
a special relationship being
formed between the ADF and
RSL AFOF (NSW Division).
Evidence of this special
relationship was shown by the
invitation from the ADF for two
of our AFOF members to visit
the crew of HMAS Toowoomba
on deployment in the Gulf and
then onto Afghanistan to visit
our troops. RSL AFOF (NSW
Division) is committed to the
ongoing support of our ADF
personnel in whatever ways we
can be of service.
2011 continued the tradition
where we saw volunteers from
RSL State Branch, RSL sub-
Branches and civilians from the
Defence Department and the
Department of Veterans’ Affairs
joining with serving members of
the Deployed Forces Support
Unit (39 th Battalion) at
Randwick Barracks in NSW to
pack over 3,500 parcels in both,
May and November, for
shipment overseas under the
direction of Mr Derek Robson,
the RSL AFOF Executive
Commissioner.
These RSL AFOF parcels were
sent to Afghanistan, Timor
Leste, Iraq, Middle East, Sinai,
Solomon Islands and Sudan.
Australia has large numbers of
personnel serving in these
overseas missions. The
packages contained various
items to remind personnel of
home and included ANZAC
biscuits, glucose confectionery,
salted peanuts, muesli bars,
lollies, a letter of appreciation
on behalf of all Australians and
Membership contact details.
It should be noted that it is
essential for the Fund to keep
sufficient finances on hand, so
that in the event of a sudden
requirement, RSL AFOF can act
immediately in support of our
forces.
To achieve this we receive
regular support from the RSL
community and thank all sub-
Branches, Women’s Auxiliary’s
and others for their generous
donations totalling $103,665
We are also most grateful for
the significant $12,500.00
donation received from the
United Returned Soldiers Fund
through the sale of the badges
on ANZAC Day.
We would like to acknowledge
the fine effort and support
provided by Mr John Cannings,
our Honorary Solicitor, for his
counsel, Miss Annette Mulliner,
Honorary Treasurer, Mr Barry
Lloyd, Chartered Accountant,
Honorary Auditor and Mr Don
Rowe, State President of The
Returned and Services League
of Australia (New South Wales
Branch) and State
Commissioner of RSL
Fund (NSW Division).
ANZAC DAY
RSL NSW
ANZAC Day March
Secretary’s Review
Jeff O’Brien
The Sydney ANZAC Day March
for 2011 commenced at the
stroke of 9 o’clock and the rain
was clearly unperturbed by the
grumblings of organisers and
participants alike. Despite the
conditions, the big wet failed to
dampen the spirits of the
veterans and those who
supported them. Under trying
conditions, the 2011 March was
seen as a great success and
although there was an obvious
reduction in numbers in some
contingents, more than 18,000
people turned out to participate
in the largest commemorative
event in Australia.
Her Excellency, Professor
Marie Bashir AC, CVO,
Governor of New South Wales
acted as March Leader and
Major General David Morrison,
AO, Commander, Forces
Command was the March
Commander. The RSL NSW
contingent was led by State
Vice President Northern
Country, Mr Bob Crosthwaite,
OAM representing the State
President who was fulfilling
responsibilities overseas. Also,
Australia’s most recent recipient
of the Victoria Cross for
Australia, Corporal Ben
Roberts-Smith, VC, MG,
marched with the SASR
Association. The 2011 media
focus was on the 70 th
anniversary of the Siege of
Tobruk and the formation of the
World War II Women’s Services
who marched as one group in
honour of this occasion.
In a continuing effort to make
the March less physically
draining for senior veterans, the
March Committee trialled a
reserved seating area in
George St for those veterans
who could get into town but
were unable to march. The
Committee was also extremely
thankful to the Pedapod
Company for volunteering to
transport veterans from drop-off
points to their assembly area at
no cost. Both these initiatives
look like continuing in the
future.
The Sydney ANZAC Day March
is supported by many
organisations. Chief amongst
these are the taxi companies
and drivers (especially RSL
Cabs) that convey the elderly
and immobile veterans, the
Army drivers and vehicles that
transport the contingent
commanders, the St Johns
Ambulance medics who provide
first aid and the NSW Police,
Ambulance and Fire Brigades
that provide invaluable
assistance, along with many
others. Special appreciation
however must go to all the
volunteer Marshals. Without
their tireless and often
thankless endeavours the
March would not be as
successful as it is. If you are a
participant in the Sydney March
please be mindful of the fact
that the Marshals volunteer
their time, in all weather, to
ensure that everyone has as
good an experience in the
March as is possible and they
should be treated with courtesy
and respect.
Pouring rain could not be the
best of conditions for a good
band performance however
once again, the more than 60
service and community bands
that took part in the March
performed admirably and nary a
grumble was heard.
POPPY
APPEAL
ANZAC Appeals’ Review
Mel Harker
As we come to the end of 2011
I think it is time to reflect on the
events URSF has been
involved with.
As you are all aware the main
two events URSF are involved
with are ANZAC and Poppy
Day Appeals. Both these
appeals take considerable time
to organise and conduct, so I
would like to thank the following
people within Headquarters for
their outstanding efforts, they
are Corrine Jenkins who is in
accounts and looks after the
money side of both appeals,
Linda Pryor in accounts for
paying the bills when they come
in and also to Del Harker (my
wife) who worked tirelessly to
fill all your orders and get them
to you. To them all I am forever
grateful and without them the
appeals would not run as
smooth as they do.
We understand the difficulty of
this year’s ANZAC Appeal what
with ANZAC Day, Easter and
the School Holidays all falling
around the same period which
made it somewhat difficult to
sell many badges but you all
tried your best and for that we
are forever grateful.
This year we managed to
generate the following from
both appeals:
ANZAC Appeal
$726,475
Poppy Appeal
$257,156
POPPY
26%
ANZAC
74%
I would also like to thank all the
sub-Branches for trying to get
all unused stock, cash and ID
cards back to us soon after the
appeal as it makes our job
easier to get the appeal finished
before we commence the next
appeal. We do have some
stragglers still sending ANZAC
Appeal stock back in the middle
of the Poppy Appeal so if we
could avoid this in future
appeals it would be greatly
appreciated.
They were a gleaming sight in summer
YOUTH CLUBS
RSL NSW
Youth Council
Secretary’s Review
Ross Baker
The NSW RSL Youth Council is
the authorised body, elected by
RSL State Council, to
administer and control the RSL
Youth Movement throughout
NSW. The aims and objectives
are:
* to assist, guide and advise
RSL Youth Clubs
* to establish new clubs and to
constantly re-appraise the
Youth Movement by introducing
new sporting and cultural
activities
* to afford our youth the
opportunity of clean and healthy
outlets, to enable them to
develop principles of good
citizenship, the observance of
law and the development of
sportsmanship in both social
and competitive sport.
There are currently 44 Youth
Clubs in NSW and the activities
provided are a diverse range
including Swimming, Ballroom
Dancing, Gymnastics, Soccer,
Netball and many others.
Reciprocal visits are organized
each year with the RSA of New
RSL Youth Hostel
The Youth Hostel had become
a costly exercise trying to
maintain it in a usable condition
and with a downturn in its
usage a decision was made by
State Council to make an offer
to the Snowy Hydro Limited to
have the building transferred to
them at no cost to Youth
Council. As a result the Youth
Hostel has been closed as of
November 2011 and transferred
to the Snowy Hydro Limited to
be used as accommodation for
its contractors and workers.
WOMEN’S
AUXILIARY
RSL NSW
Women’s Auxiliary
President’s Review
Thelma Crawley OAM JP
In 2011 the RSL Women’s
Auxiliaries have approximately
donated $ 209,453 to RSL
LifeCare, RSL Welfare &
Benevolent Institution, State
President’s Christmas Appeal
and CCWA for administration
purposes. Many Auxiliaries
have given substantial amounts
to their respective sub-
Branches and Community Life
Care Complexes to assist with
welfare requirements. Our
grateful thanks are extended to
these very dedicated, loyal and
tireless Auxiliary Women and I
congratulate them on a job well
done under difficult
circumstances.
We enrolled 188 new Members
in 2011. There are 174
auxiliaries at the moment with
3,400 Members including Life
Members. This number is also
approximate as some Life
Members have moved away
and it is hard to keep in touch
with them.
Sub-Branches have closed and
become a chapter of another
sub-Branch or closed down
completely, some clubs have
been sold and the new club
won’t let the girls work in the
club to raise money. I have two
Auxiliaries where the girls have
to meet in one of the Auxiliary
Member’s home so that they
can keep functioning and sell
the ANZAC badges and
Poppies. They are to be
admired. We lost 6 Auxiliaries in
2011. It is sad to think that after
all these years of RSL Women’s
Auxiliaries that it has come to
this.
In 2012 a Recruiting Committee
will be formed with the aim of
increasing membership in all
Auxiliaries. We would like all
sub-Branches to support their
Auxiliary and to form an
Auxiliary if they do not already
have one. CCWA will be very
happy to help them. Auxiliaries
give great support to their sub-
Branch by raising money for
Welfare, Welfare & Benevolent
Institution, RSL Life Care and
AFOF. Also they support sub-
Branches with selling emblems,
providing help on ANZAC and
Remembrance Days and
Welfare work.
The Returned and Services
League - NSW Branch of
Women’s Auxiliaries were
founded on fellowship and a
desire to care for our
communities. This continues to
exist to this day. Members
enjoy the friendship of likeminded
women and the
opportunity to develop welfare
skills. Members enjoy visiting
other Auxiliaries when they hold
functions, sharing ideas and
ideals.
It is always sad when we see in
our “Garden of Remembrance”
the passing of Members and
Life Members and there could
be more of whom we haven’t
been advised.
Our 64th Congress, held at
Burwood RSL Club, was
opened by Mrs Karen Phillips,
Director of People Services of
Miss Annette Mulliner OAM,
CFO/Assistant State Secretary.
Central Council was
congratulated by many Auxiliary
Members, who attended
Congress, for the very
interesting and informative
information given by our Guest
Speaker.
In October, the Metropolitan
Conference was held again at
Burwood RSL Club. We had
two Guest Speakers, Mr
Christie who spoke his uncle
who had served in World war !
And a cross that was on his
grave in France and again, by
special requests from
Auxiliaries, Miss Annette
Mulliner OAM. Both were well
received.
I had 95 invitations from
Auxiliaries and Country
Conferences. This included 87
Birthday Luncheons. Thanks go
to the Deputy State President,
Clara Elliott, State Secretary/
Treasurer, Robin McKinnon,
Mavis Goodlad, Far north Coast
Councillor and Pat Mortlock
OAM, South Coast and
Tablelands Councillor for
representing me at two
Conferences and eight
Luncheons.
Our gratitude goes to the City of
Blacktown RSL sub-Branch and
Kogarah RSL sub-Branch for
their donations towards the rent
of our rooms in ANZAC House.
Our thanks also go to Bondi
Junction/Waverley RSL sub-
Branch for their donation
towards the cost of our
Congress to be held in 2012 at
Dubbo.
To the sub-Branches who have
made me most welcome at their
Auxiliary Functions, my sincere
thanks. Many thanks to my
fellow Councillors and Auxiliary
Members for all the good work
that they have done in2011.
DAY CLUBS
RSL NSW
Day Clubs
Secretary’s Review
Ross Baker
2011 has been a very
successful year in terms of
training new volunteers, the
consolidation of the RSL Day
Clubs throughout NSW, the
Official Opening (and 1st
Birthday) of Coonabarabran's
'Aurora Club' and Dubbo's
‘Orana Club’ which celebrated
their 30th Anniversary.
The RSL sub-Branches have a
very strong association with
their Day Clubs. This
association through
sponsorship and support is
fundamental to the life of the
Day Club Program. The RSL
State Branch would like to
sincerely thank each of those
sub-Branches and strongly
encourage them to continue
with their ongoing involvement
in 2012.
The RSL State Branch would
also like to sincerely thank each
and every Day Club volunteer
for the wonderful work and time
that they have contributed to
their clubs over many years of
service.
A ballot was held in May for the
appointment of six Area
Coordinators to assist the State
Coordinator Mr Tom Barnsley
for the next three years. The
ballot resulted in the election of
one new Area Coordinator, Mr
Bill Gibbs (Coordinator – Sir
Joseph Banks RSL Day Club).
Also appointed to the
Committee in 2011 were Mr
Bob Metcalfe (Chairman), Mr
Peter Stephenson (Deputy
Chairman) and Ms Naomi
Blundell (DVA – Deputy
Commissioner’s
Representative). We welcome
these new members to the
Committee and many thanks for
the hard work by all, ensuring
that NSW continues to lead the
way in the Day Club movement.
Special thanks also to Erica
Greig, Margaret Morgan, and
Kathryn Hodgkinson from DVA
and our Tom Barnsley.
On behalf of the RSL State
Branch, we wish to thank each
of the following outgoing
Committee members for their
service and support as
members of the RSL Day Club
Committee over the past three
years: Mr Barry Glover
(Chairman) after 10 years
service; Mr Greg Salmon
(Deputy Chairman); Ms Debra
The ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park
South underwent considerable
restoration during 2009 and 2010
with funds provided by the State
Government.
The State Government took this
opportunity to revise the Memorial
Trust Deed and the operation of the
Memorial.
One result was the State Branch
was appointed Custodian of the
Memorial and funds were provided
to establish a Corps of Guards. The
Corps has been given the task of
assisting with the Commemorative
Ceremonies conducted at the
ANZAC Memorial as well as
providing a welcoming face to the
visitors and was required to assist
the Memorial Guides.
Following an extensive external
training course on Volunteering
with an assessed component and
further training on the history of the
ANZAC Memorial, 23 Guardians
graduated at a Parade reviewed by
the Hon Victor Dominello, MP
Minister for Citizenship,
Communities and Minister for
Aboriginal Affairs. The Parade was
held at the ANZAC Memorial on
Saturday 15 October 2011.
Since that date the Guardians have
Judging by the standard of entry
received at ANZAC House for the
‘Australia My Country’ Competition
in 2011, it is obvious that the youth
of NSW are well versed in the
history and traditions of our great
country. The competition is
designed to allow students to
express their thoughts on themes
such as sacrifice, loyalty, service
and tradition through composition,
poetry, artwork or electronic media
and many take the opportunity to
produce works of exceptional
standard.
There were close to 500 entries
across the 15 sections in 2011 and
the standard was extremely high,
making the job of judging the
winners difficult. The members of
the Teachers’ RSL sub-Branch who
participate in the judging are to be
commended for their efforts.
The winning student from each
section was presented with a
Certificate of Merit by Her
Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir
AC CVO, Governor of New South
Wales, at Government House with
a cheque for $100 by the State
President, Mr Don Rowe OAM.
The winners came from across
both the metropolitan area of
Sydney and the country, with a
good mix of both private and public
schools. The Chairman of the
‘Australia My Country’ Committee,
Mr John Haines AM, State Vice
President Metropolitan, took the
opportunity to congratulate all
students, teachers, parents and
sub-Branch members who were
involved in making the competition
such a success.
I have very much pleasure in
presenting on behalf of the
Trustees our Annual Report for the
Welfare & Benevolent Institution.
As our Annual Report indicates we
continue to see more and more
requests made to the Welfare and
Benevolent Institution for
assistance. The Trustees are very
pleased that we have been able to
support many veterans and their
families in the last year and look
forward to continuing this
commitment. We have seen a
change in the dynamics of our
Pension and Advocacy work now
with more MICA than DVA claims
being handled as we see more
younger veterans seeking our help.
The Trustees thank our sub-
Branches and Women’s Auxiliaries
for their donations to ensure that
we are able to continue to look
after veterans and their families in
need, whether it be through family
tragedy, illness, or affected by
natural disasters.
The Trustees particularly like to
thank our dedicated staffs who
have gone out of their way to
ensure that our aims and objects
are met to provide this welfare
work. We thank all for their support
for 2011 and look forward to this
continuing in 2012.
Cadet of the Year
The Cadet of the Year formerly known as
the ‘Spirit of ANZAC’ Awards is a
competition conducted annually by the
State Branch, in conjunction with the
Cadet Services of the Australian Defence
Force, to find the top Cadet in each of the
three services. Cadets are assessed in
Drill, First Aid, General Knowledge, a
presentation on a military subject and a
personal interview.
This year’s winners sailed on SYS
‘Young Endeavour’ in January 2012.
The value of the training that the Cadets
receive on the voyages is invaluable to
their further prospects.
A number of previous winners of the
Cadet of the Year have joined the
Regular Forces.
ANZAC of the Year Award
The aim of the award is to perpetuate the
name of “ANZAC” and all it stands for in
a contemporary and significant way.
First nominations for the award were
called for in 1978 and are now
implemented on an annual basis.
The awards are in the form of a Silver
and seven Bronze Medallions for the
Only one ANZAC Peace Prize is awarded
annually for outstanding efforts in
promoting world understanding and
peace. The award is not given if the
selection panel does not identify a
suitable candidate.
Up to seven ANZAC of the Year awards
can be awarded annually. The award is
to recognise the service of the Australian
some positive, compassionate and
selfless manner.
SYMBOLISM OF THE RSL BADGE
The Crown
On top of the badge is the crown which has always been the symbol of royalty. It is also
symbolic of our allegiance to royalty and of our loyalty to our monarch – our nation – and
the RSL.
The Shield
The badge is in the shape of a shield which, from time immemorial, has always been used
for protection. The shield, therefore, is symbolic of the protection which the RSL gives its
members, widows, orphans and dependants of those who paid the supreme sacrifice and
which the RSL accepts as its responsibility to protect.
The Figures
The four figures in the centre of the badge are symbolic of the youthful forces which have
emblazoned Australia’s nationhood across the world and of the comradeship which existed
during our war service and which now continues among members of the League. The
figures are marching shoulder to shoulder and are in step with each other, reflecting a
combined determination and unity of purpose. In unity we have strength and therefore, the
figures are symbolic of the solidarity and strength of the League.
The Circle
The centre of the badge is surrounded by a circle. A circle can be described as unbroken
continuity and is symbolic of the League’s unbroken continuity of purpose.
The Colours
There are three colours in the badge. The red represents the blood-tie of war that exists
between comrades. The white stands for the purity of thought, motive and purpose to
render service without thought of personal gain or ambition. The blue indicates a
willingness to render that service to a comrade anywhere under the blue sky – wherever
the comrade may be.
The Sprigs of Wattle
In the top left hand corner of the badge are sprigs of wattle which is the accepted national
floral emblem of Australia. It, therefore, symbolises that the RSL is a national organisation
and is national in its outlook.
The Rose, Leek, Thistle & Shamrock
The emblems of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are located in the top right-hand
corner. They are symbolic of, and represent, the link with these countries.
