“People come into the Emergency
Department and they are anxious; they
don’t know what to expect.” —Melissa Wallace, RN, BSN
Melissa Wallace, RN, BSN, an Emergency Department nurse at Beebe Medical
Center, sees it every day, the anxiety in the eyes of patients as they fear what
might be wrong.
“I can be the first person who sees them in the examination room,” she
says. “I ask them to tell me what is bothering them. It’s like making a friend.
I listen to what they say and observe their non-verbal behavior. I assess their
respiratory rate and compare my findings to what is on the monitors. I meticulously
document.”
The doctor arrives to examine the patient. Sometimes lab tests, ultrasounds,
or CT scans are ordered, and these tests have to be done quickly. Time is of the
essence in the Emergency Department as doctors and nurses have to assess a
patient’s condition to determine whether it is life-threatening. The patient may
need an emergent cardiac procedure. The tightness in the chest may signal
pneumonia, or a heart attack, or simply indigestion.
“Beebe School of Nursing gave me a strong foundation with its ‘head-to-toe
assessments’ that we were required to do,” Mrs. Wallace, who graduated in 2007,
recalls. “It made us look at the whole person.”

Mrs. Wallace also credits the mentoring she
received in the Emergency Department after she
graduated and after she passed her licensure boards.
Charge Nurse Tracie Roberts, RN, MSN, a Beebe
School of Nursing graduate who has worked in the
Emergency Department for more than a decade,
agrees that an experienced nurse has learned to
look at a patient and know what he or she needs.
“We have to rule out what is acute (life-threatening),
and that is why tests are often ordered, and that
is why we sometimes find something else wrong that
we are not looking for.”
Listening to the patient is important, but so is
knowing what questions to ask to get to the truth.
“Each person is unique and seldom presents
exactly like what is described in the textbook,” she
explains. “I always try to get the information from
the patient, rather than from a family member. There
are clues in what the patient says as well as in how
the patient looks.”
The Emergency Department nurse focuses on the
patient, but he or she also helps the family members
understand what is wrong.

and overseeing the assignment of patients to beds,
she is never far from one-on-one patient care.
That day she kept the little girl calm as she followed
the condition of the other family members.
She also telephoned the father to let him know that
the family was in the hospital and that she had his
daughter safely with her.
“One of my responsibilities is to contact family
members when there has been a trauma. I always
tell them, ‘This is Jeannie, the Nursing Supervisor
at Beebe.’ I am honest, but I focus on helping them
to remain calm.”
That day, the father arrived and the family went
home with him. It was a happy ending. Unfortunately,
that is not always the case, and Ms. Wallo
finds that she becomes the family’s liaison when
the medical team is busy treating the patient.

When an extra hand is needed, the nursing
supervisor often has to be called.
“I was recently called to help take care of a fiveyear-old
child,” Beebe Nursing Supervisor Jeannie
Wallo, RN, recalls. “Her mother and siblings were
hurt in a car accident and being treated. She could
not be with them.”
Though Ms. Wallo’s duties include overseeing

Taryn Harris, RN, a nurse in the Intensive Care
Unit, finds that she also comforts family members
even as she focuses primarily on her patient. In the
ICU, it is not unusual to have one nurse to one
patient, though one nurse to two patients is more
common.
“My patients can be in a coma or in a deep,
induced sleep to keep them still when they are on
a ventilator, but I always talk to them and I tell the
families to do the same thing. I tell the patient who
I am and why I am in the room and what I am doing.
Many times, I have had a patient tell me months later
that they remembered my voice.”
Ms. Harris has been a nurse for 13 years, the last
five of which have been in ICU. Her patients are very
sick. They have suffered serious health issues such as
blood clots, infections and renal failure. Often they
are dying.
“At Beebe we do not have interns and residents.
The doctors expect the nurses to know the condition
of the patients.”
Ms. Harris emphasizes the team spirit and
collaboration that is always evident within the units
at the hosptial—in the Emergency Department, the
Operating Room, or any one of the specialized floors.
“The staff in the unit is my family.”
Carol O’Driscoll, RN, BSN, BS, was a nurse in
an operating room for 24 years before she became
the Director of Surgical Services at Beebe Medical
Center. “People come to a hospital for nursing care;
the doctors write the orders but the nurses carry
them out,” she says.
Today, Ms. O’Driscoll oversees the team of 156
Beebe healthcare professionals in the operating
room, in addition to the 48 surgeons and 17 anesthesia
providers. There are 6,000 surgical procedures
performed at Beebe Medical Center yearly.
Her past experiences as a surgical tech, a
licensed professional nurse, and an operating room
nurse have given her an in-depth understanding of
what goes on in the operating room and what efforts
are needed to make it run smoothly.
“I still put on my scrubs and go into the operating
room to see what is going on,” she says. “I’m still
available if I am called.”
While Ms. O’Driscoll says she is most proud of
the fact that she is a nurse, she also is proud that she
is a nurse who has moved into a leadership position.
“I am the patient advocate, the
spokesperson to the doctor. I monitor
the vital signs and let the doctor
know of immediate and ongoing

At Beebe Medical Center, Ms. O’Driscoll has
spearheaded the implementation of life-saving quality
and safety initiatives in the operating rooms. One of
the initiatives is called the “Time Out,” which requires
the entire operating team participating in a surgical
procedure to stop and verify the correct person,
procedure, and site before the surgery begins. The
second is a World Health Organization initiative to
create and follow checklists in the operating room.
“The nurse in the operating room calls the ‘Time
Out’ and is critical in these initiatives,” she says. “The
nurse speaks up for the patient and promotes safety
checks to catch errors before they happen.”
Another nurse, who the patient may not see, is
the one who today plays a crucial role as hospitals
implement electronic medical records. This computerized
system—already evident at the bedside at
Beebe Medical Center, means that the patient’s nurse
inputs medical information about the patient into
the portable computer rolled into the patient’s
room. This information is then available to the doctors
even when they are not at the hospital. Today,
at Beebe, hospitalized patients have wristbands with
information about them that is scanned by the nurse,
sending it into the computer. The nurse also scans
the label on the medication to be given to the
patient, making sure that everything is accurate.
Beebe School of Nursing graduate Marsha
Rogers, RN, is both a nurse and a computer expert.
She has melded these two professions together, and
now, as a “nurse informaticist,” builds the computer
programs that allow this bedside scanning to take
place.

Capital campaign for expansion of
Beebe School of Nursing
Beebe Medical Foundation is kicking off a capital
campaign to raise $3 million to expand the Beebe
School of Nursing. The total project is anticipated
to cost $5.1 million.
The Foundation already has received $1.8 million
in state and federal funds and $800,000 in donations,
including $97,330 from the recent Beebe Art
Auction. The Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary also
donated $300,000 this year to the project—the largest
annual donation the Auxiliary has ever made.
Local community leaders Alex Pires, Jr. and Jim
Richmann, both Beebe Medical Foundation Board
members, are co-chairing the campaign.
“My wife Frances and I support the expansion
because of three benefits,” Mr. Richmann explains.
“Nurses provide the most cost-effective, personalized
healthcare available; a larger school creates professional
career opportunities in our community; and
a more technologically advanced institution of
higher learning translates into positive economic
development.”
Mr. Pires says the project is important for the
community.
“Beebe School of Nursing is an excellent school
and has helped provide our community with the
nurses we need. Yet, it is modest in size and has
to turn students away.” He warns of the looming
national nursing shortage that could impact coastal
Delaware.
“Nurses are the backbone of the hospital,” he
says. “They are in the front line and they are the

leadership. We must build this facility and open
the doors to more students.”
Beebe School of Nursing was established in
1921 and is the only hospital-based nursing school
in the state. It offers students the unique opportunity
to regularly experience the hospital environment
as they carry out their studies. Its graduates have
higher average pass rates on the nursing licensure
exam than is usually seen at the state and national
levels. Beebe graduates’ pass rates in 2009, for example,
were 93.8% compared with the Delaware rate of
84.9% and the national rate of 88.4%.
Today the school is housed in an antiquated
building with space for only 30 students. The
planned expansion will allow the number of students
to double and modern technology to be
introduced. The two-story dormitory will be razed
to make room for a three-story building to house
classrooms, clinical laboratories, a library, a computer
laboratory, and conference rooms.
“We also are re-defining our strategic direction
as we look into the future needs of our community,”
says Connie E. Bushey, MEd, BSN, RN, Director,
Beebe School of Nursing. “We want to make sure
that our graduates are prepared to offer the highest
quality care to the patients.” n

Education and Early Diagnosis
While treating cancer patients is of paramount importance at Beebe
Medical Center, the emphasis on prevention and early diagnosis stands
out.
“We know that the patient’s prognosis is better if the cancer is diagnosed
in the early stages,” says Kathy Cook, MSN, RN, Cancer Screening
Nurse Navigator at Tunnell Cancer Center. Her role is to encourage people
to be screened for breast, cervical, prostate, and colon cancers, reminding
them that these cancers are among the most common, and that they can
be diagnosed in early stages—unlike many others.
Ms. Cook, who has been a nurse for more than eight years, goes
into the community, speaking to people at
churches, neighborhood centers, and schools.
She recently organized a Men’s Health Forum,
in part to educate men on the new guidelines
about prostate cancer and when and why a man
should be screened.
She helps those who can’t afford to be
screened to find financial aid and acts as a liaison
with Tunnell Cancer Center for those who may

Two Medical Oncologists Joined
Tunnell Cancer Center This Year
Medical oncologists/hematologists Muhammad Arif,
M.D., and Nouman Asif, M.D., have joined the multidisciplinary
medical team at Tunnell Cancer Center
that includes two other medical oncologists/hematologists,
two radiation oncologists, and a staff of specialized
oncology nurses, an oncology pharmacist, a
registered dietitian specializing in cancer care, and
other professionals who directly impact patient care.
Dr. Arif is Board Certified in
Medical Oncology, Hematology,
and Internal Medicine. He has
more than 10 years of experience
and has developed an
interest in treating patients with
multiple myeloma, lymphoma,
and colon cancers. Dr. Arif completed a Fellowship
in Hematology and Oncology at the Western Campus
of Tufts University at Baystate Medical Center in
Springfield, Massachusetts, and a residency in Internal
Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Columbia University at Harlem Hospital Center in
New York.

funded the new program, Sharing our Stories, Saving our Sisters (SOS 2 ) with a
$99,986 grant to Tunnell Cancer Center.
Sharing Our Stories, Saving Our Sisters (SOS 2 ), focuses on providing free
breast cancer screening and education to women in minority and underserved
populations in Sussex County who might otherwise not receive the healthcare
that they need. The incidence of breast cancer for all women increases with age
and is highest among white women; however, mortality rates are highest among
African-American and Latina women.
Judith Ramirez, Ed.D., Manager of Psychosocial Services and Outreach
at Tunnell Cancer Center, who is spearheading SOS 2 , has enlisted a team of
cancer survivors to spread the message. These women, called “lay navigators,”
are trained in how to educate other women and in the resources that are available.
SOS 2 Event Coordinator Ann Athas arranges the venues for the lay navigators
to attend.
“It has become my passion,” says lay navigator Joyce Rickards. “With early
breast cancer detection, you get a second chance to live life to the fullest.”
Tunnell Cancer Center was established in 1995. It has
received the Commission on Cancer’s highest accreditation
with commendation as a comprehensive community
cancer center, and the 2008 Commission on
Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award for
excellence. Tunnell Cancer Center’s clinical
specialties are medical oncology/hematology
and radiation oncology. About 200
patients visit the center each day.

Ms. Rickards knows the fears and hope that one
goes through after being diagnosed with cancer.
In 2006, she was diagnosed and treated for gastric
cancer. In 2008, she was diagnosed and treated for
breast cancer.
“God has brought me through cancer twice, and
this is why I need to help others. Spiritually, it is the
path I need to be on.”
Ms. Rickards says she also became a lay navigator
in memory of her mother, who died of breast cancer.
Her mother was diagnosed and treated, and then
lived for 25 years until the cancer returned. Women
listen to her because of what she has gone through,
Ms. Rickards says.
“Some tell me that they don’t want to know that
they have cancer. I tell them that they have to know.”
Dr. Ramirez says that the lay navigators do an
excellent job of spreading the message to women
who would not otherwise know about breast cancer
or that mammograms can be free if the woman is
financially eligible. The program kicked off in the
spring, and Dr. Ramirez is building partnerships with
organizations throughout Sussex County to make
sure that the message continues to be spread.
“We want to reach as many women as we can,”
she explains. “And only through a collaborative effort,
where people are working together, can we do that.”
Beebe Medical Center’s focus on cancer education
does not stop with prevention. To make sure
that patients understand their cancer and their treatments,
new patients are enrolled into a class called
“What color is your ribbon,” where they receive
an overview of what to expect in regards to cancer
treatment.
“Our goal is for our patients to have healthy bodies,
minds, and spirits,” says Dr. Ramirez. “We want
our patients to be informed and to understand and
to take part in their own treatments.” n

Dedicated Oncology Unit Supports Beebe Medical
Center’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Program
Beebe Medical Center has opened a dedicated, inpatient oncology unit on the fifth
floor of the hospital facility on Savannah Road in Lewes.
The newly renovated unit has seven private rooms and offers individualized care for
hospitalized cancer patients and for other patients who have had cancer surgery.
The unit is staffed by specially trained and certified chemotherapy nurses.
The specialized unit supports Beebe Medical Center’s multidisciplinary oncology program,
which includes the Tunnell Cancer Center outpatient facility on John J. Williams
Highway in Rehoboth Beach and an active cancer surgery program at the hospital.

What it
means to
Give
Back
Joanne Greenspun can be found giving tours in the Lewes Historical Society
Complex on most Friday mornings in the summertime. At 82 years of age, she
is knowledgeable about local history and can tell you just about anything there
is to tell regarding those buildings and what is inside them.
Though she has lived most of her life outside of Delaware, she was born
here, and her mother’s people, the Marshall family, have local roots dating
back to the 1700s. Beebe Medical Center co-founder Dr. James Beebe even
delivered her in the early Beebe Hospital.
“I don’t have any children so I’m not interested in leaving an
estate when I die,” she says. “So instead, I’ve set up charitable gift
annuities for organizations I believe in. Beebe is one of those.”
Ms. Greenspun is one of many donors who have discovered creative philanthropic
“planned giving” vehicles as a way to support their favorite organizations.
There are all kinds of these vehicles, such as trusts, different types of
annuities, and distributions from a will. Many offer the donor tax advantages
and interest payments while they are still living, as well as the knowledge
that the donor will make a difference in the lives of others for years to come.
Ms. Greenspun has regularly returned to Lewes from where she has lived
in Philadelphia and New Jersey. After she retired in 1992 as Director at the
Vineland Public Library in New Jersey, she started volunteering at the Lewes
Historical Society complex as a docent. She’s followed the growth of Lewes
and of Beebe Medical Center. She says that charitable gift annuities are the
best investment she can think of.

they pay very good interest rates. You don’t want to
put your money in the stock market.”
In a charitable gift annuity, the donor turns over
a certain portion of money to the organization he or
she supports. The donor then gets an income from
that gift. There also are tax advantages.
Beebe Medical Center urologist Ramachandra U.
Hosmane, M.D., created a charitable remainder trust
to which he contributes each year.
“I started working at the hospital in 1978,” he
says. “The community has grown and the hospital
has grown as I have grown in my career. I want to
give back. And I want the hospital to continue to
grow.”
Dr. Hosmane recalls how small the community
was when he arrived.
After finishing his residency in urology at Hahnemann
Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia,
he wanted to go somewhere that needed a urologist.
“They needed one here. There were none.”
Paul Mylander moved to Lewes in 1990 to take
over as president and CEO of Delaware National
Bank. He had worked in the banking industry in
Washington D.C. for more than 20 years. As he and
his wife Pat became involved in the local community,
in 2002 he was invited to join the Beebe Medical
Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Mylander
became Chairman of the Foundation’s Vision 2005
Planned Giving
Donations made through “planned giving” come in several financial
vehicles. Most bring some tax advantage and they often generate
income to the donor. Professional advisors should always be consulted.
Examples include:
Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust
or Charitable Remainder Unitrust
Both of these are irrevocable trusts that feature income based on the value
of the property donated. The annuity trust pays a fixed income based on the
value of assets at the time the trust is created, while the unitrust provides a
fluctuating income based on a fixed percentage of the trust’s annual value.
Gift Annuity Agreement
A person can make a gift to a charity and receive fixed, annual payments
for life.
Gifts By Will
It is possible through a well-planned will to make charitable gifts of a specific
amount, particular property, a percentage of the estate, or all or a portion of
the residue after providing for heirs.
Life Estate Agreement
The title to a residence or farm is transferred to a charity while the donor
retains the right to live there and enjoy the property for life. The donor
receives tax deductions and the charity receives the property following
the donor’s death.
Charitable Lead Trust
This trust can be created to provide income for charitable purposes for a designated
period of time. The remainder in the trust at the end of the period
reverts to the donor or the donor’s beneficiary. This is a valuable tool for
donors who have more income than they currently need and who wish to
pass on an asset to a child or grandchild at a lower cost to the donor’s estate.

How Endowment Works
An endowed gift is a donation that is maintained indefinitely by Beebe
Medical Foundation. The principal amount will always remain intact because
only a portion of the fund is used each year by Beebe Medical Center for the
purposes specified by the donor. The other portion remains untouched to
help the endowment grow and keep pace with inflation.
“Think about the satisfaction you feel
when you make a gift to support the care
available at Beebe,” emphasizes Gene
Bookhammer, Chairman Emeritus of the
Beebe Medical Foundation Board of
Directors. “By establishing an endowment,
you can provide support to Beebe forever.”
Give a Forever Gift
Capital Campaign, which raised more than $12.5 million,
enabling Beebe Medical Center to embark on
projects that built the Beebe Health Campus and
expanded the hospital in Lewes.

“When I got here 20 years ago, Beebe didn’t
have the best reputation. But I’ve watched it getting
better and better. I’ve seen the services improve and
I’ve seen more and more doctors coming here. I
wanted to be part of that. There are so many good
things that the hospital does for this community.”
Mr. Mylander, who is Senior Advisor and Director
of The Bank of Delmarva, earmarked a distribution
in his will to Beebe.
“The lawyer who did it for me did not even
charge because he felt it was such a good thing
to do.”
Mr. Mylander is a strong advocate for choosing
planned giving options to support Beebe Medical
Center. He cited the importance of the outpatient
facilities throughout the county, as well as the
hospital itself that is located in Lewes.
“We want to make sure that we fulfill the healthcare
needs of this community.” n
A donor can establish an endowment with a single donation during his or
her lifetime by the following: making gifts over a period of five years; through
a bequest; or with a charitable trust. Each donor may restrict the use of the
funds to a purpose that reflects his or her values. In addition, donors have
the privilege of naming the endowment to honor a family member or a
friend, or to put the endowment in their own name. The minimum amount
needed to create a named fund is $25,000, and gifts of lesser amounts can
be added to the general endowment.
“Looking to the future, I can see how a large endowment will be instrumental
in our ability to meet the demand for sophisticated equipment and new
facilities,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, President and CEO of Beebe Medical Center.
“While we continue to need to fund current capital expansions, raising the
level of our endowment is also critical to Beebe’s ability to care for our
patients in the future.”

The new Nursing Education Campaign will make
it possible to double the capacity of the current
nursing class, enabling us to graduate more nurses.

The Starrlight Fund presented a grant of $1,000 to the Tunnell
Cancer Center to support the special needs of patients with ovarian
cancer. The Starrlight Fund, held at the Delaware Community
Foundation, was established by Tammy Brittingham, her husband
Mike Pelrine, and son Eban Brittingham of Lewes. Tammy lost

June 13, 2010—Hats Off to America
This annual summer event, held in June, has become a tradition for the many
friends who come together each year to bid on wonderful items, purchase outstanding
art, and enjoy fantastic food and entertainment.
This event has raised more than $1.5 million over the last 21 years. Net proceeds
from the 2010 auction totaled more than $97,330 and will benefit the expansion

22nd Annual Beebe Ball
November 7, 2009—A Royal Evening
This gala dinner dance and silent auction, held in November, has become the
highlight of the winter season, and since its initiation 22 years ago the event
has benefited various medical center programs.
Over the last 22 years this event has raised more than $1.4 million. Net proceeds
from the 2009 event totaled more than $95,000 and benefited the renovation
of Beebe Medical Center’s Women’s Health Pavilion.

Annual Holiday of Lights Tree Lighting
December 9, 2009
Marking the beginning of the holiday season, this annual event is an opportunity
to remember or honor family members and friends. Lights are placed on a tree
on the lawn of the medical center as a sign of this remembrance at the beginning
of the holiday season. The 2009 Holiday of Lights proceeds benefit Beebe Medical
Center’s Community Health Program that ensures:
• Our mission to make sure everyone has access to basic diagnostic medical care.
• Community Health conducts multiple screening programs and health fairs each
year and structures these programs so that anyone can take advantage of these
important medical tests, regardless of ability to pay.
• Beebe Medical Center is committed to providing the best possible care at the
lowest possible cost.

The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan
Martin, two outstanding women who lost their valiant battle with cancer. During
their final months, both women were surrounded by families that loved and cared
for them and a circle of friends who generously gave their time and support.
It is most important that people going through these trying times receive all the
physical and spiritual support available. The goal of the Jean & Joan Fund is to assist
the Tunnell Cancer Center in providing care and comfort for patients. The fund
has supported the establishment of the Jean & Joan Reflection Center at the Tunnell
Cancer Center, purchased three vans for the transport of patients to and from their
treatments, funded the building of the enclosure for the Tunnell Cancer Center
Healing Garden, and supported the Tunnell Cancer Center Special Needs Fund.
The 2009 golf tournament raised $32,000, bringing the total Jean & Joan Fund
contributions since its inception to $282,000.

Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club’s Progress for Prostate Charity Golf
Tournament was established by a group of individuals who wanted to focus
attention on prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common type of
cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. Early detection is
the key to combating this disease.
Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament has contributed over $110,000
to help Beebe Medical Center provide free prostate screenings and community
awareness programs.

Better Breathers CLUB
Third Wednesday of Each Month at 1:30 p.m.
A support group for those with pulmonary diseases.
Information on pulmonary disease and treatments is
presented by respiratory therapists, physicians, dietitians,
and pharmacists. Attendees suggest topics to
discuss. The group meets at the McCurry Conference
Center in the Medical Arts Building in the Beebe
Health Campus on John J. Williams Highway (Route

CAREGIVERS’ SUPPORT GROUP
Third Thursday of Each Month
A support group for caregivers of those with
Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases meets at
The Gull House (Bay Mart Shopping Center, opposite

DIABETES INSULIN PUMP
SUPPORT GROUP
If you wear an insulin pump or are interested in learning
about wearing a pump, come join us. A support
group provides an opportunity to meet others who
also live with diabetes and share the same concerns.
Beebe Medical Center’s Certified Diabetes Educators
will be available to answer questions. For further

Mended Hearts Support Group
Third Tuesday of Each Month at 2 p.m.
A support group for those who have had open-heart
surgery meets at the McCurry Conference Center in
the Medical Arts Building, next to the Tunnell Cancer

STROKE SUPPORT GROUP
Fourth Thursday of Each Month at 5 p.m.
A stroke support group meets at Tunnell Cancer
Center, 18947 John J. Williams Highway in
Rehoboth Beach. The group provides support to
stroke survivors, care partners, spouses, and friends.
It provides education and resources to maximize
participation in home and community. The instructor
is Holly Sullivan, Speech/Language Pathologist at
Beebe Medical Center. For additional information,

PARKINSON’S DISEASE
SUPPORT GROUP
A Parkinson’s disease (PD) support group has formed
to help those with PD, their caregivers, and anyone
else who may be afflicted with body movement
disorders. The group meets monthly at the McCurry
Conference Center in the Medical Arts Building, next
to the Tunnell Cancer Center on Route 24. For more

The group is hosting a Parkinson Symposium, 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m., November 6, at Cape Henlopen High
School in Lewes. The cost is $25 per person and

CPR
Beebe Medical Center offers CPR, ACLS (advanced
cardiac life support), and PALS (pediatric advanced
life support) classes. For further information and to

Diabetes care
Beebe Medical Center’s Diabetes Management
Department offers educational and management services
for people with diabetes. Diabetes educational
programs are offered three times each month for persons
newly diagnosed and those who need a refresher
course for managing their disease. A 10-hour diabetes
self-management education series is presented as
three sessions, at various times, on a rotating basis.
Individual sessions are available for special needs.
Additionally, several diabetes and nutrition specialty
sessions, such as Diabetes in Pregnancy and Insulin
Pump education are offered. All provide the ADA standard
curriculum for healthy eating, increasing activity,
monitoring blood glucose, taking medications, healthy
coping, problem solving, and preventing complications.
Education is also offered in the Spanish language.
Certified Diabetes Educators and Registered
Dietitians provide all education. The department can
