What better time to put libraries centre stage than World Book Day Use interest in the event to organise and
advertise an open day style occasion at which people can drop in to find out what’s on offer.
2 WoRK WItH LoCAL SCHooLS
World Book Day is a perfect opportunity to invite local schools into the library. Get in touch with teachers as early
as you can to discuss ideas, and try to suggest a package of activities for a visit lasting an hour or so. You might also
consider giving an assembly on World Book Day about libraries and what they can offer children.
3 WoRK WItH A BooKSHoP
World Book Day is a good time to build links with bookshops—perhaps by staging a joint author event or by hosting
a small stall selling children’s books in the library for one day only. You could also invite schools on joint visits—first
to the bookshop to redeem their World Book Day £1 tokens, and then to the library to find out what’s on offer.
4 MAKe A DeDICAteD WoRLD BooK DAY
DISPLAY
Use the exciting and all-new World Book Day posters to make a
lively display for your boards or walls. (Posters should have
arrived from your library supplier in January; if you have not yet
received them, please contact your stock management team.) You
could also add books like the eight £1 World Book Day titles. When
displaying books, use multiple piles and ‘face-outs’, and designate
members of staff to refresh it at regular intervals to ensure they
look suitably full and attractive. Consider putting reservation cards
on the display for books not immediately available.
5 StARt A CHAtteRBooKS GRoUP
Chatterbooks is a national network of reading groups for children (aged 4 to 12),
coordinated by The Reading Agency. If you work in libraries and schools then you
can also use Chatterbooks to help meet statutory targets and standards. The Reading
Agency has created a special World Book Day Chatterpack, which will be available
from the libraries section of the World Book Day website. You can read more about
Chatterbooks here: www.readinggroups.org/chatterbooks.
6 USe FoYeRS
Small displays in foyers of libraries or council buildings are a great way to draw attention to World Book Day. Just a
few posters and a nice table display of books is enough to help spread the word.
7 DeCoRAte YoUR WInDoWS
• The book tokens are a gift from National Book Tokens, publishers and booksellers across the UK
• Library joining forms have been sent to all schools to ensure that every child that is not already a
member of the library either joins themselves, a sibling or a family member on World Book Day
Visit the Libraries section of www.worldbookday.com to find a comprehensive PR
Forging links with local schools and bookshops can be a great boost to your
World Book Day celebrations. Here are 5 ways you can work together.
1. SCHooL VISItS
Arrange to visit a local school to talk about reading and books – perhaps with the help a local author or illustrator.
2. exPeRt ADVICe
Hold ‘book clinics’ in schools where you can talk to class groups about the £1 World Book Day books and offer
advice on which other books they might like to try based on their preferences and past reading.
3. BeSt In LIBRARY
Many schools ask children to dress-up on World Book Day. Invite them to visit your library in small groups to
redeem their tokens, and award a small prize to the best dressed in each group. Make sure your staff are dressed
up too.
4. Co-HoSt tHe onLIne eVentS
If you don’t have the space or technology in your library to screen the online events, link up with a local school or
bookshop who will be able to host the screening. The bookshop will also be able to set up a stall on site to sell the
£1 books or backlist by the authors appearing, or follow up with group visits to your shop for children to redeem
their tokens
If you are working with frontline staff to promote World Book Day, you may want to consider
running a staff briefing session in which you could:
• Provide background to the initiative and details of how World Book Day will be run.
• Encourage staff to create lively displays in their libraries, refreshing them regularly.
• Show a selection of the £1 books to staff so they become familiar with the books being promoted
on World Book Day.
• Suggest starting a staff blog: if you’re running World Book Day events across a number of
libraries you may want to set up a blog to keep other staff informed. This could also be a place where
staff and/or readers post their ideas for World Book Day. Blogs are easy to set-up (www.wordpress.com
and www.blogger.com are two well-known free blog sites) and you can make them ‘private’ by
entering the details of those who can access it.
BeYonD WoRLD BooK DAY
once the excitement of World Book Day has died down, there are plenty more
opportunities to promote books, reading and libraries. Here are five suggestions.
World Book Night sees a million copies of 25 amazing books (including books by Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett,
Meg Rosoff & Dodie Smith) given out by members of the public in their communities on April 23. If teenagers in
your library haven’t applied to be a giver, they can still be involved by reading one (or all!) of the books, attending
a local event or book group or even organising one of their own. Visit www.worldbooknight.org for all the
information you need.
If you have discovered some keen young readers over World Book Day, the Summer Reading Challenge is a great
way to extend their reading and build their confidence. See www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk.
3 HoSt A ReADInG GRoUP
Reading groups are a fantastic way to widen children’s reading range and confidence all year round. Chatterbooks
is a network of reading groups for 4 to 12 year olds. Use World Book Day as the impetus to get one going! See
www.readinggroups.org/chatterbooks for more information.
Young people needing help with their literacy skills will enjoy the sense of ambition and achievement that comes
with the Six Book Challenge. Find out more at www.sixbookchallenge.org.uk.
