the cancellation of a bus route will divert the existing passengers to minibus or taxi.<br />

On the other hand, the opening of a railway system will attract passengers from other<br />

means of transport like bus and minibus. After the opening of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Rail</strong>, many people<br />

have changed their transportation mode to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Rail</strong>. It is important to determine<br />

different transportation modes in <strong>West</strong> New Territories in order to compare their<br />

difference in characteristics, and to investigate the reasons why passengers choose a<br />

particular transportation mode.<br />

2.3 The Purposes of Travel Trip<br />

People traveling from one place to another must have their purpose.<br />

According to Hanson (1995), there are generally eight types of trip purposes: work<br />

trips, shopping trips, shopping trips, recreation trips, school trips, business trips, home<br />

trips and others. As a trip is defined as one-way movement, whenever a person goes to<br />

work or shopping from home, they finally must back to their home. Therefore, the<br />

home trip is founded to be the most popular purpose for travel trip in metropolitan<br />

area of North American. It account for 35-45% of the total trips. Work, shopping and<br />

social/recreation trips account for 10-15% of the total trips (Hanson, 1995).<br />
