Career preparations Frequently Asked Questions about Co-Op Q: Is Co-Op compulsory A: Yes, the Co-Op Component is compulsory for all of UCSI University’s degree and diploma programmes (with the exception of the Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing degrees which have their own clerkship/industrial training component). Q: When do I start the Co-Op A: Co-Op Placement usually takes place in November-December of every year. Only graduating students (i.e. students who have completed all the academic modules of their degree programme but have not completed the Co-Op components) may carry out their Co-Op placement commencing in January, May and September every year. 24 I UCSI University Co-Operative Education Report 2009
Career preparations Q: Does this extend the time of my degree programme A: The Co-Op programme does not in any way extend the time of study for any undergraduate degree or diploma programme. The Co-Op takes place two months right after the traditional two-month short semester, ie the final semester of the year actually becomes 4 months (2 months Co-Op + 2 months classes) the same as other regular semesters. Q: Do I have to pay additional fees to participate A: No, you do not need to pay additional fees to participate in the Co-Op programme. In fact, as a student intern, you may be paid a minimal salary/allowance during training. Q: Will I be guaranteed a placement A: CECS will make every effort to assist students in finding a suitable work experience. Nevertheless, it is also important that students have the correct attitude and knowledge that is on par with market demands in order to successfully secure placements. Q: Will I need to be interviewed first A: Yes, most if not all job placements will require at least one round of interviews with the potential employer. Potential employers reserve the right to interview and select their student interns accordingly. As a result, good academic scores as well as good interview preparation is essential. Q: Can I choose a company that is not on UCSI University’s list A: Every student must accept the choice of placement provided by UCSI University unless the student has found a company that is willing to take him or her in and be subject to UCSI University’s terms and conditions. UCSI University will be more than happy to consider suitable companies that a student wishes to recommend. H owe ve r, a n y s u ch recommendations need to be submitted to UCSI University at least one month before commencement of the student’s Co-Op component.
