President’s letter
A few months ago, we were
reminded of the powers of mother
nature and the sea. We have all had
the privilege of experiencing the
might of the sea, but the pictures
of this disaster sent chills down our
necks. I speak for all of us when
conveying our sincerest
condolences to all those directly or
indirectly affected by the Tsunami.
2004 was a great year for the Finn
class at all levels and the
culmination of four years hard work
for many sailors. This ever repeating
cycle of endurance and acquisition of skills and experience sets up
these sailors for life, whether or not they actually make it to the big
tent. It is a journey that is full of pain, toil, cost and finally rewards.
The rewards are satisfaction, friendships, emotional control and
physical prowess. We believe the Finn class best embodies these
ideals, and will be looking to promote the Finn as the ultimate
singlehander with a rightful place at the Olympic Regatta.
Various development initiatives are under discussion. We had a highly
successful clinic before the Europeans this year and will be looking
to repeat this in the years to come. We are also looking at the feasibility
of having a ‘gear pool’ of old sails and masts to generate growth in
some of our ‘developing’ nations. If you have thoughts on this please
contact the Finn office.
2004 saw the expected showdown between Ben and Mateusz. Ben’s
victory in the stunning location of Rio marked him as surely one of
the best Finn sailors of all time with three consecutive Gold Cup wins.
Mateusz’s victory in La Rochelle at the Europeans was a long awaited
victory for him, his first championship win for four years, and set the
scene for the perfect finale in Athens.
Ben’s greatest victory and his greatest comeback will be remembered for
years, and along with Rafael’s and Mateusz’s medals made for a
memorable and satisfying conclusion to the 2004 Olympic regatta. It is
perhaps then justifiable that Ben and Mateusz were worthy additions
to the Finn Hall of Fame at the 2004 ISAF Conference in Copenhagen.
Of course elsewhere, countless other sailors had their moment of victory.
Those old enough to know better watched Larry Lemieux calmly take
his fifth World Masters title at Cannes in a fleet of 191 Finns. With more
front rank sailors reaching 40, this is going to get harder and harder for
the wily Canadian.
November marked the confirmation of the Finn in the 2008 Olympic
sailing programme. As always, the ‘powers that be’ take a long hard
look at some of the classes and we need to look at a number of points.
Even though the Finn was never really in danger, we need to seriously
reflect on some of the tendencies (Europe replaced by Laser Radial for
example) and decide how to act, if needed. I will start a working group
within the Executive Committee to look at these points for future reflection.
You may have been informed of the change in timing of the Moscow
Worlds. Whilst this late change was a shock to us all, for reasons outside
IFA or Russian organisers’ control, I have no doubt our Russian friends
will do their utmost to ensure the success of the Championship. Going
by the pre-registrations, it should be a tremendous success!
As this issue was going to press we received the sad news that John
Hofland had died as a result of complications after extensive heart
surgery. John was a very popular Finn sailor, IFA Vice President Sailing
from 1987 to 1990 and in 1997 married Josje Dominicus the IFA’s then
Executive Director. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Josje and
their two sons, Hidde and Sjoerd, at this time.
Good sailing and see you on the water.
2007 ISAF Worlds in Cascais
ISAF has announced Cascais, Portugal, as the venue selected to
host the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championship. The selection of
Cascais was announced at the end of the Olympics in Athens. The
2007 ISAF Sailing World Championship will be hosted by the Clube
Naval de Cascais in association with the Portuguese Sailing Federation
and the International Sailing Federation. The dates are to be finalised,
but will be late July/early August to co-ordinate with the 2007 Olympic
Test Event in Quingdao, China. Held as a single event, the 2007 ISAF
Sailing World Championship will combine 11 Olympic Class World
Championships at the same time in one venue. With an anticipated
Scale 1:12.5 • Euro 250-
Email: contact@easymed.dk
1,000 entries, 1,500 competitors, 70 nations, and Olympic Qualification
it will be the most significant World Championship for the Olympic
classes. Cascais was chosen based on its ability to provide the sport
of sailing with a first class venue and administration infrastructure,
strong community and government support, and an outstanding sports
arena - excellent weather conditions, beautiful waters and a stunning
location.
ISAF Centenary
2007 will also mark the occasion of the ISAF Centenary, celebrating
100 years since ISAF, or the then IYRU, was formally created. A
diverse programme of celebrations will recognise the occasion,
including celebrations at the 2007 ISAF Sailing World Championship.
Looking ahead
The 2008 Olympic Games will take place in Beijing, China from 8 to
24 August 2008. The sailing events will take place at Qingdao
International Marina (still to be built) at Fushan Bay in Qingdao City,
which is 690 km to the east of Beijing. There are five sailing courses
each with a diameter of one nautical mile. ISAF has approved the
location as suitable for the 2008 Olympic Games sailing competitions.
The Qingdao International Marina will be a lasting legacy for the sport
of sailing in an important region of China and will be the future centre
of international and national sailing activities. It will also provide a
base to promote popular interest and development of this sport in
China.
Chris Cook wins Rolex Miami OCR
Rolex Miami OCR
January 24-28 2005
Canada's Christopher Cook won the first
Grade 1 regatta of the year in fine style by
leading from the the first race in the 26-boat
Finn class. A two horse race between Cook
and the US Olympian Kevin Hall saw them
win 8 of the 11 races sailed. This year's event
was the first time the Florida regatta was run
over five days rather than the usual 4, and
this proved popular with sailors and aligns it
with the other Grade 1 events in Europe.
Fourth overall was 20 year old Zach Railey,
who recently switched from Laser to Finn to
try his hand against the more seasoned
sailors. It was his fourth year competing at
the Rolex Miami OCR but his first-ever Finn
regatta. “There are not as many boats in the
Finn class, but the sailors are good,” said
Railey.
Cook, a three-time North
American and Canadian
National Champion who
finished second at his country’s
2004 Olympic Finn Trials,
added that he was mostly
watching runner-up Kevin Hall,
who represented the USA in
Athens. Cook contends,
however, that Bill Hardesty, in
third overall, is ‘coming on
strong.’
Contest in Cannes
4th Semaine Internationale de Cannes
February 16th-19th 2005
by Gilles Henaff (FRA 846), translated by Marc
Ribet FRA 830
The weather situation looked pretty good. A zone
of low pressures with located over the Gulf of
Genoa was generating moderate winds on the
bay of Cannes under a blue sky with few clouds.
During the regatta the wind never exceeded
Force 3 on the first day and then dropped to
Force 2 and 1, even less for the rest of the week.
You think you are dreaming when the rest of
Europe is hit by terrible weather. Cannes stayed
in its bubble during the event with a temperature
of 10°C.
The regatta saw 42 sailors, including 19 sailors
from 9 countries (5 from Germany, 4 from
Switzerland, 3 from Italy, 1 from Austria, 1 from
Denmark, 1 from Monaco and 1 from Sweden).
Day one
Two races were completed in the westerly bay,
with Force 3 then 2, shifting between south and
southwest. The first race was started without the
yellow flag, but it came out for the second race.
During that second race, we watched the ‘double
spin’ of some high profile sailors. At the end of
the day, 2 wins for Guillaume Florent left him
leading followed by Florian Raudaschl and Mario
Salini.
Day two
The wind was lighter (Force 1 to 2). 3 races were
completed without any problem. In the lead was
the same trio followed by Kenneth Boggild and
Woller Tam. The first French ‘veterans’ were not
far away.
Day three
The first race in the easterly bay with Force
1-2 (wind shifting from east to southeast) was
shortened at the end of the second upwind leg
as a cable ship from France Telecom came to
moor right next to the downwind mark. Apparently,
the ship was there to repair a telephone cable
between Corsica and the continent. Anyway,
Guillaume Florent was still in the lead, followed
by Jean Paul Gaston who seemed to be warming
up. The following race took place in the westerly
bay with a southerly wind and saw for the one
and only time a winner other than Guillaume
Florent. Clearly, our veteran, who had spent the
winter in the Caribbean (and therefore the only
one not to winter), stole the show.
Day 4
The last day was staged in the westerly bay,
and the 8th race started in a Force 3 wind.
Locals were telling us that this is unusual in
the region and will not last. From the start the
wind gradually dropped and totally disappeared
when Pierre Mondeteguy rounded the first mark
with Jean Paul Gaston second. The race was
cancelled and we sailed back to the easterly
bay as a Force 2 wind was expected. Around
noon the easterly breeze kicked in and a new
race began. First place went again to Guillaume
Florent.
During that last race, rule 42 took it toll as three
top sailors were caught for the second time.
One of the three acknowledges the penalty
and retires from the race. The two others,
ignoring the rule, do a 720° and keep on racing.
They eventually get a DNF which cannot be
discarded. Some were pulling a long face that
afternoon on the parking!
The final podium: Guillaume Florent (FRA),
Florian Raudaschl (AUT) and Kenneth Boggild
(DEN). Thomas Brack (SUI) is 5th and gets
the Veterans Cup. There are six different nations
in the top 6.
This regatta was hosted by Cannes Yacht Club,
the organisation was first hand and (almost)
all sailors were delighted. It is worth mentioning
that in these tricky conditions, the extreme
options never paid off. Discerning sailing in the
middle and playing with the shifts allowed the
smart tacticians to fully express themselves.
As a conclusion we were asking for more, this
was great Cannes and we can’t wait for 2006.
Some would like this event to be postponed by
FINNFARE MARCH 200
What’s up with the Finn in North America
Charles Heimler, Solo Editor
An interactive web-page, an email listserve,
training and instruction clinics at major regattas,
and multi-boat trailers have helped us promote
Finn sailing in this three-thousand mile wide
Continent. There’s about 30 really active sailors
in the U.S. and Canada, and over 90 sailed
last year in nationally ranked regattas.
There have been many milestones for the
USAFA and Canadian Finn Association in the
past year and a half. We are getting better
organised which has helped increase the
turnout and participation on regattas.
For one, Solo, the North American newsletter,
is now available online at www.nafinnclass.org.
It’s a 26-page Microsoft Publisher document
with great photos. Charles Heimler (USA 32)
became editor in 2004 and has produced 3
issues. The current issue is a wrap-up of last year’s
sailing with announcements for the winter and
spring season.
In it you can find out about the renaissance of
the Finn in the USA and Canada. An article
last year in Sailing World magazine kindled
interest in and helped the class increase its
popularity. The Finn is proving itself as a great
singlehander among the different ages.
This year, a lot of the interest in boats has been
spurred on by renewing the class organisation.
There’s a Foundation set up now that uses
U.S. tax laws to help fundraise for class activities
like sailor support and training. The class is
also working to establish a new relationship
with U.S. Sailing so we can send our best
sailors to the big events in Europe. At the same
time, scores of older sailors are buying older
Vanguards, Teels, and Taylors to increase
vintage veteran racing at the regional and club
regatta. The association’s philosophy is that a
‘rising tide’ of good sailing in Finns benefits all
those interested in the boat.
Now in the U.S. and Canada, there is a strong,
four-seasons series of regattas and training
clinics that links the distances of the continent.
Events take place in Florida, New England,
Central Canada, Northern and Southern
California, and the Great Lakes. All these
regions of North America have seen fleets
sprouting up and major events scheduled. We
had 25 boats at the Nationals and North
Americans last year and sailors from UK, POL,
DEN, IRL, and NOR visited us.
In 2005, the Miami OCR and Lauderdale
January/February regattas are back in force
and included several Finn sailors from countries
outside the U.S.A. and Canada. In 2005, the
USA Finn Association is discussing a new ISAF
Grade 1 regatta in November in Clearwater, Florida
– this will further enhance the winter season.
In Spring there is a series of 2-3 regattas over
a month’s time in San Francisco and Long
Beach, California, as well as a summer series
in the New England and Great Lakes States.
And in Fall 2005, there is a California circuit of
Olympic classes regattas and the Pacific Coast
Championship. It’s now possible to sail a Finn
regatta somewhere in the U.S. and Canada in
forty-six events each year - from small club races,
regional regattas to major championships.
Kevin Hall, our Olympic representative, returned
from Athens to sail in Georgia and Florida
regattas, and is now campaigning for the top
spot on the U.S. Sailing Team. Junior Zack
Railey grew into a Finn this year and was a
top finisher at the Miami OCR. Longtime Finn
veteran Louie Nady was the top-ranked
competitor in our national rankings!
One barrier to further Finn growth is the dearth
of equipment on this side of the Atlantic and
the national government’s policy of a weakened
U.S. dollar as the Euro increases hurts us. So
we are exploring building and refurbishing boats
and equipment.
Information about the Finn in the U.S.A. and
Canada can be found at www.nafinnclass.org.
There is also a listserve at
Candian Nationals 2004
Kingston, Ontario, October 2-3.
Chris Cook took five bullets in winning the 2004
Canadian Nationals. Seven hardy souls showed
up for the 2004 Canadian Championship, held
off Portsmouth Harbour in Kingston. Saturday
presented Big Dog, Heavy Chain Weather, as
in ‘the wind blew the (big) dog off the (heavy)
chain’. Chris Cook had superior speed, and
was especially fast on the offwind legs of the
trapezoid courses. During one run, sporting a
200 yard lead, Chris gallantly stopped to rescue
a Laser sailor who had become separated from
his boat. After depositing the sailor in a crash
boat, Chris cut short the sailor’s expression of
gratitude, saying ‘I’m still racing! I’ve got to get
back to my race!’ The jury later awarded Chris
first place points for that race, a well-deserved
redress. Sunday’s breeze eased off to merely
low 20s, and Cooker kept to his winning ways.
Derek Mess managed straight seconds to cling
the runner-up spot, with Evan King muscling
his way to 3rd place overall. Bill upthegrove,
Ross Emmans, John Miller, and Mike Honey
also enjoyed the windy frolic.
Serene Lake Cazenovia has been the scene
for many an outrageous weekend of Finn
Fraternity mayhem in its three-decade history
of hosting the Finn class in its upstate New
Saturday tri-tip barbecue, the camping on the
grounds of Willow Bank Yacht Club – this
midsummer event is like no other. As the
standings indicate, people head to Caz from
AUSTRALIA
The President Australian Finn Association,
John Shallvey, writes: “Over the last year
some excellent work has been done by an
older Finnster in Graham Lewis. He has
managed to track down many of us who have
either owned, sailed or thought about getting
into a Finn. This great work had led to the
organisation of three reunions of Finn sailors
at each of our three major regattas this year:
Sail Brisbane [Nationals], Sydney International
[SIRS] and Sail Melbourne. I understand that
there is a already great deal of footage and
photos being uncovered and ready to be made
public. No doubt by the time these reunions
take place the waves will have gotten bigger
the gusts at the gybe mark stronger and the
pain of screaming thighs and that long boom
taking all before it memory to be relived.
If you are an old Finnster that Graham has
not yet found you we want and need you to
get involved, so please contact me at
shalves@bigpond.com. We are currently
investigating how to run a ‘classic’ division to
cater for those older hulls, masts and sails –
even more reason to get those older boats
on the water.”
FINNFARE MARCH 2005
FINNFARE MARC
Focus on Italy
Marco Buglielli writes, “Finn activity doesn’t
stop in Italy during the winter, and many
winter championship were held this year,
with the participation of a record number of
sailors. There is a great anticipation for the
Finn World Masters which will take place in
Bracciano in May and all the Italian masters
are preparing for that event, with training
sessions and new boats, masts and sails."
Anzio
Ten races were run in the Anzio winter
championship, over 5 days from November
to February, always with good wind and often
with beautiful sun. This year there was a
record participation with 28 sailors. There
was a hard fight for the top places, and
Andrea Guidi managed to win with one point
margin on Francesco Cuccotti and 4 points
on the former Secretary Franco Martinelli.
Torre del Lago
Another winter championship was held in
Tuscany, in Torre del Lago Puccini, organised
by the local Circolo Velico Artiglio. After 5
races (with 38 Finns) the winner was Franco
Dazzi (2-1-6-5-7), with Italo Bertacca in
second place (3-3-2-7-9) and Alberto Taiti in
third position (4-4-7-12-4).
Livorno
The “Trofeo Daniele Lupidi” was held in
Livorno during January and February, over
4 consecutive Sundays, always with a good
northerly wind. The young local Riccardo
Cordovani dominated with a string of victories
(1-1-1-1-1-1-2-1), and the fight for the second
place was won by Simone Mancini (4-3-3-2-
dnc-3-1-2) who prevailed on Lorenzo
Marchetti (2-2-11-3-2-2-ocs-3).
Trofeo Bertacca
The second edition of Trofeo Bertacca Sail
Equipment was held at the end of October
in Torre del Lago. The weather forecast for
the weekend was not good, but 41 Finn sailors
were present and three races were sailed in
mainly light and variable conditions. The final
winner was Riccardo Cordovani (2-3-1),
followed by Paolo Visoni (3-1-3) and Nicola
Menoni (7-2-2). Everybody was very happy
with the perfect organisation of the event,
accurately prepared by Italo Bertacca, with
a nice dinner Saturday evening and a very
lavish prize giving ceremony.
