COVER STORY
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
Mammoth Cave Festival
Lethbridge will soon play host to a mammoth-sized
day of music.
The second annual Mammoth Cave Festival
is set for May 2 at Henotic Restaurant,
and Paul Lawton, event organizer, says music
fans of all stripes are in for something special.
“This festival is all over the map, which I
think is one of the main appeals,” says Lawton.
“You’ll hear people say they’ve never heard
of most of these bands, but I think that’s
the joy of discovery in this. I do truly think
there’s something for everybody over the
course of the day.”
From noon to midnight, 30 different
groups from across Canada will show Lethbridge
what they’ve got. There will be two
stages – one on each level of Henotic – and
each band gets a short set of about 20 minutes,
so if fans don’t like what they’re hearing,
they can check out the other stage or just
wait a few minutes for the next band.
“There’s going to be a continuous flow of
music, so if you see a band that doesn’t appeal
to you, you can go to the other area and
wait for the next band,” says Lawton.
Everything from folk to rock to synth pop
to punk, and several styles in between, will
be on display. And more than half the bands
featured are local – Lawton co-owns Mammoth
Cave Recordings, a local record label,
and says one of the reasons he started the
event was to give homegrown talent some
extra exposure.
“Part of this festival is exposing Lethbridge
residents to what we consider the best and
brightest of the new wave of Canadian underground
music. At the same time, I was really
conscious of making this a local music
festival, and I tried my hardest to include as
many different musicians from as many different
styles as exist in town,” he explains.
“It’s offering the genuine process of music
discovery, which I don’t think there’s a lot of
options for anymore. Most local radio stations
play the same things you’ve heard for
years, and Muchmusic doesn’t play music
videos anymore, so a lot of people feel stuck
“Zenabou” $35/Month
in not being able to discover what’s actually
happening in Canada right now.”
Lawton has worked with counterparts
in Calgary and Edmonton who are hosting
similar events in those cities featuring many
of the same bands. This gives the groups a
chance to earn some ream money with a few
large gigs.
“When we coordinate them in this way, we
can guarantee the bands who are doing all
three days a little more money, rather than
Turntables will be spinning as well at
Mammoth Music Fest
having them come out to Alberta for just one
of them. It was kind of mutually beneficial for
all of us.”
And when it came to choosing which bands
to feature, Lawton didn’t have much trouble.
“We were really conscious of finding bands
from across Canada that are still relatively
underground but are on their way to the
mainstream, rising in popularity,” he says.
“So we made a big list of bands that we
would be interested in exposing to a bigger
specific community leaders. The desired outcome is to promote the dignity,
potential and health of children and their communities regardless of ethnicity,
age, gender and creed.
Alberta audience and went from there. It was
actually fairly simple.”
All in all, Lawton says it’s a great time for
new bands in Canada and Lethbridge, and he
should know, having been a part of the local
music scene since 1994.
“Right now, I think it’s as hot as it’s ever
been. It’s pretty exciting.”
The Mammoth Cave Festival is a chance
to get caught up with what’s going on locally,
and Lawton says it’s tough to find a better
value.
“It’s a crazy good deal for the number of
local and other bands you’re going to be able
to see.”
Only 200 tickets are being sold for the
event – the first 100 sold will cost $15 each,
and when those are gone, the next 100 will
cost $25 each. Tickets are available at Henotic,
Blueprint Records, and at Mammoth
Area farmers hope for higher
grain prices and spring rain
LETHBRIDGE, AB - As farmers in the
Lethbridge area and across the province get
ready to seed their crops, parched fields and
slumping grain prices are among the biggest
risk factors on many producers’ minds, says
provincial crop analyst Charlie Pearson.
“I’m hearing a lot of concern from farmers
on both of those issues,” says Pearson,
who works with Alberta Agriculture and
Rural Development, and speaks with producers
across the province. “Many areas are
starting off with low soil moisture levels, so
everyone’s hoping for plenty of spring rain
to turn things around and get crops off to a
good start.”
On the price side, many producers are
feeling anxious because crop prices have
dropped substantially in the last two years,
says Pearson. No one anticipated wheat,
canola and barley prices would plunge 20 to
40 per cent between spring and fall last year,
he says. So far this year, prices remain down.
Wheat is in the $4-to-$5/bu range compared
to $5.50-to-$7/bu at this time last year.
Canola has slipped to $8-to-$9/bu compared
to $9-to-$10/bu last spring.
“We no longer have the high prices we
saw in 2007 and 2008. But if you look at
long-term averages on grain prices, we’re
slightly above average,” he points out. However,
while the price of inputs like fertilizer
and fuel have also dropped, some input costs
have increased, putting a squeeze on budgets
that could make it challenging to pencil out
much of a profit this year, says Pearson.
With margins so tight, he’s hopeful prices
won’t slide further. “My best guess is prices
will remain relatively stable at the levels we’re
seeing now. But we have no way of knowing
if markets have bottomed out yet.” He’s most
optimistic about canola because demand for
vegetable oils remains strong. But Pearson
says there are a number of factors that could
spur prices on all crops in either direction.
Prices could easily climb higher if severe
weather negatively impacts crops in a major
producing region of the world, says Pearson.
“On the other hand, perfect weather worldwide
and two-to-three inches of spring rain
in Alberta with reasonable rain through the
summer could result in bumper crops that
drive up world grain supplies and drive prices
lower.” Pearson says favourable weather
and abundant world crops were partly to
blame for prices dropping last fall. He adds
the strong Canadian dollar could send prices
downward if the loonie continues to rise
this summer.
With so much uncertainty around prices
and weather, Pearson says it’s a good idea
for farmers to look at options such as crop
insurance and locking in some prices now
in case they dip lower by the fall. He advises
producers to consider tools such as forward
delivery contracts with grain companies,
which guarantee prices for grain delivered
this fall; or the Spring Price Endorsement
(SPE) rider on crop insurance, which protects
farmers if prices decline 10-to-50 per
cent between spring and fall. Pearson notes
the deadline to apply for crop insurance in
Alberta is April 30.
SPE paid out $80.5 million following the
price drop in 2009 – the highest payout in
10 years, says Lorelei Hulston, Provincial
Insurance Manager for Agriculture Financial
Services Corporation (AFSC), the provincial
Crown Corporation that administers
crop insurance in Alberta on behalf of the
provincial and federal governments.
Mayor Tarleck invited to write
article for forum in China
LETHBRIDGE, AB - Mayor Robert Tarleck
has been invited to participate in a preevent
to the 2010 Global Mayors Forum to be
held in China in November of 2010.
At this point in time, ten Canadian and
American cities are on track to submit an
article for the “Dialogue to Global Mayors”
project. This project will help to circulate
opinions and experiences about urban sustainability
and is intended to spur interest,
thought and discussion prior to the 1000
international guests arriving for the Global
Mayors Forum.
In order to meet the goal of discussing current
urban development issues in a manner
that encourages sustainable development,
Mayor Tarleck has chosen to write his article
on Lethbridge’s public engagement process
in building an Integrated Community Sustainability
Plan – the most ambitious community
consultation process in the history of
Lethbridge. City of Lethbridge Senior Planner,
Rob McKay, co-authored the article.
International articles, such as the one Mayor
Tarleck has written, will be published in
the Ta Kung Pao, a hundred year old newspaper
in Hong Kong boasting of more than
500,000 readers. Organizers believe these
articles will provide valuable information
which can be referred to by the participants
well past the actual time of the Global Forum.
C O M M E N T
I couldn’t believe how
fast I was going!
Three decades and two hips ago I would
regularly run the annual 10-mile road race.
It was a daunting task for a guy with short
stubby legs and the body of a pug. When I’d
jog throughout the year my maximum distance
was three miles and I’d probably get
out three times a week. It’s always good to
have a running partner. Greg Rohovie and
I would keep each other motivated on those
days when you’d rather go for a beer. Most of
the time we’d convince each other that running
that day was a good thing. Sometimes
the beer won.
When we did make it to the jogging path
it was always around Henderson Lake. We’d
start in the first parking lot on North Parkside
Drive, make our way to Mayor Magrath
Drive then to South Parkside Drive. That
stretch along South Parkside Drive to the
Exhibition seemed like the longest part of
the run so we had a name for it. We called it
“The...” (rhymes with itch).
We’d finish the “rhymes with itch” portion
then continue on past the Exhibition back to
North Parkside Drive. We called that leg of
the run the Champs-Elysees because we envisioned
ourselves as soldiers during WWII
who had just liberated France and there were
beautiful women waiting for us at the end
of the Avenue to thank us for our sacrifice.
I know, it’s pathetic but it helped us to complete
the run.
That was pretty much the extent of my
training for the ultimate challenge: The Ten
Mile Road Race. The race has evolved since
its inception but for the first many years
you’d start at the Lethbridge College, make
your way through Indian Battle Park, cross
the Highway Three Bridge, go up the hill
past the Par Three Golf Course then along
University Drive to the University where it
all ended.
The first year I did the run, my goal was
simply to run the whole way. I didn’t want
to stop at any point of the race. The starting
line was really intimidating for me. There
were a lot of people wearing fancy shorts
and stretching in a fancy way. They had obviously
done this sort of thing before. There
was even a guy who had a pair of sunglasses
with mirrors so he could keep track of who
going to have to worry about me. There were
about 500 people all jammed together as the
starting marshal fired his gun. The adrenalin
kicked in. I couldn’t believe how fast I was
going. The first 500 yards I was feeling good.
The fast runners were in front where they
should be and there I was in the middle of
the pack jockeying for position with a few
others. I was even staying ahead of some
people with the fancy shorts. I started to get
into a groove. I wasn’t overdoing it. I was
maintaining a good pace. No one was passing
me. I thought, “Hey, this is going to be
all right”. We ran along Scenic Drive, took
the old sewer road down to Indian Battle
Park (even passed a few more fancy-shorts
people), made it through Indian Battle Park,
crossed over the Highway Three Bridge. I
was still feeling pretty good and then....THE
HILL. The Par 3 Hill as we called it or what is
Bridge Drive is one mile long and constantly
goes up. When you’re running it, it seems
like it never ends.
You make it to a curve where you think
it’s over only to find another curve. I died
on that hill that day. I particularly remember
getting about half way up when a 250 pound
guy who had no business jogging caught up
to me, slapped me on the butt and said “Keep
at ‘er!” and proceeded to run miles ahead of
me. I cramped up, I couldn’t breath and I
had to stop. I wouldn’t make my goal. There
would be no French girls waiting for me at
the end of the Champs-Elysees. And the
chaffing. Why didn’t anyone warn me about
the chaffing!!
I made it to the top of the hill and to my
immense discouragement I realized there was
still another four miles to go. It was the longest
four miles of my life. More people were
passing me (including fancy-shorts people)
but I finally made it to the University where
mercifully I crossed the finish line. I hadn’t
liberated France, but perhaps I gave some
kind of special assistance to Lichtenstein.
The race was and still is a great event and
I’m so glad organizers have kept it going for
37 years. I can’t really explain why a guy like
me with short stubby legs would put himself
through that kind of torture eight more
times. But each time I did it there was a new
experience. And I got a great t-shirt too.
I was able to make it all the way up the hill
after that first time but man, I could never get
over that chaffing.
The city of the future just
might be Wal-Mart
Anyone who has ever ventured out on
a Saturday afternoon on the streets of Lethbridge
has probably at one time or another
been stuck in the middle of the intersection
as the light turns from green to red. It’s embarrassing
as you get menacing glances from
the other drivers, and for someone who is
not a lip reader, it’s very easy for me to imagine
the words that are being mouthed.
This happened to me recently, when I was
heading southbound on Mayor Magrath and
Scenic Drive. Congested parking lot traffic
in Lethbridge! What could possibly be happening?
As it turned out, everyone on that
Saturday was going in the same direction as
I was, to that consumer Mecca on the southside:
Wal-Mart.
I don’t always spend my Saturday afternoons
shopping, but on this occasion I
needed to pick-up several items of different
descriptions, and what better place than the
one-stop-it’s-got-all, Wal-Mart?
It really is a phenomenon. Wal-Mart is
the Disneyland for consumers. The premise
is simple enough: load a gigantic store with
every conceivable product under the sun and
watch people flock from all corners of city.
It’s a good thing there are now two locations
to take the pressure off the Southside.
What has worked so well for them is realizing
that the one determining factor many
people use to decide to buy something is
price, and the notion that they are getting a
great deal. Wal-Mart has been able to do that,
whether it’s true or not. There has been lots
of controversy over the years, whether it’s
Wal-Mart hurting or chasing out the mom
and pop operations or stocking shelves with
merchandise that may or may not have been
assembled by children in some third world
country.
However, despite the controversies, Wal-
Mart has continued to thrive and prosper.
Shoppers continue to come in droves to find
deals. My trip there on that Saturday was
fairly routine – I had a few items on a list
and Wal-Mart was the one-stop destination
where I could pick them up all at once. That
would be one way that they are environmentally
friendly: I didn’t have to run errands to
five different stores, using up gas.
The problem with having everything under
one roof, though, is that I ended up buy-
ing four or five other things I didn’t even
think I needed, and probably didn’t. That
may be the trick to their success.
I asked a friend of mine why she shops so
much and her response sounded eerily like
someone who has experienced a degree of
mind control. She said it was because the TV
tells her she needs to buy more stuff. Advertisers
knows this game all too well. They use
status to get you to buy more than you can
afford in an attempt to appeal to your desire
to be like someone else – someone with more
money, power, or social status.
Peer approval is another approach to make
you feel like you’ll fit in with others if you just
buy a certain product – I’ve found it’s usually
my personality that gets me rejected.
The psychological mind twisting is almost
endless. Some don’t like the mass consumerism
of Wal-Mart because it’s a big American
outfit trampling all over our Canadian identity.
I’m quite proud of the way Canadian
Tire and Zellers have continued to fight back
and succeed.
We still shop at those other stores, but
more often than not, Wal-Mart gets a good
chunk of our business because of the perceived
view that we are getting the best deal
on the biggest selection. The Wal-Mart supercentres
might actually have everything
known to humankind, but no one can know
for sure, seeing as no one has the physical
capacity to actually walk up and down every
aisle of one of those mega stores. That’s got
to be a good day and a half hike. You’d have
to pack a lunch and hire a Sherpa guide and
a yak to make it from sporting goods all the
way over to cosmetics in the same day successfully.
Or if you plan your excursion just
right, you can stop at the built-in McDonald’s
for a meal.
Slowly but surely, controversies aside, Wal-
Mart is becoming just a normal part of the
Canadian experience. We’ve all been in one.
Actually, I think the long term plan at the
head office is to have us all just move in. Developers
could build condos next door with
climate-controlled hallways into Wal-Mart
and offices at the other end, and you may be
able to live there for weeks without ever leaving.

Alls wells?
JOURNAL
It’s a day that has lived in infamy in Toronto
Blue Jays history: December 15th,
2006. That day the American League ball
club inked Vernon Wells to a seven-year,
$126 million dollar contract extension.
The centrefielder was coming off a career
season in ‘06, where he clubbed 32 home
runs, added 106 runs batted in, and hit an
even .300.
At the time, the Jays were wary of losing
the All-Star to another team, and with
salaries skyrocketing in the Majors, it was
thought that Toronto needed to flash some
major cash to keep Wells.
So, Toronto anted-up and brought the
Brinks trucks. At the time, it was the sixth
richest contract in MLB history. Now, just
over three years later, it is still the 12th most
lucrative deal.
Unfortunately for the Jays and their fans,
Wells has never even come close to living up
to the pact. Over the past three seasons, the
Shreveport, Louisiana native has averaged
just a .265 batting average, 17 home runs and
75 RBI per campaign.
The contract is an albatross for the organization,
which would have a better chance of
trading Ace, the Blue Jays mascot, than moving
Wells. The deal is costing Toronto about
$16 million this season, then jumps to a base
of $23 million next, with the final 3 years
costing a base of $21 million per.
Staggering for a team that has a payroll
of about $80 million this season (although
paying first baseman Lyle Overbay nearly $8
ke
FOR WHAT IT’S
WORTH
million in 2010 is nearly as reprehensible – at
least his contract ends this fall).
All in all, it’s pretty easy to hate on Wells.
Without a doubt, he has been a punch line in
this very column on a few occasions.
However, I sincerely hope he regains his
All-Star form. Let’s face it: whether you are a
Blue Jays fan or not, if the team is successful,
it sure makes the Major League season much
more interesting here in the Great White
North.
One series into the new season, the
31-year-old was brilliant, and perhaps it is a
sign of things to come. Wells went on a tear
against the Texas Rangers (he makes his offseason
home in Arlington, so perhaps it was
the home cooking) totaling six hits in 10 at
Umpire clinic
Lethbridge Southwest Little League will
be holding an introductory Umpire Clinic
on Wednesday, Apr. 14 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
at Canola Harvest Field. This clinic is recommended
for all umpires interested in working
games for Southwest Little League this season.
It will be conducted by Little LeagueAlberta.
The clinic is free and will cover the
basics of umpiring, providing prospective
umpires with a solid foundation of umpiring
Available $380
bats, smacking four home runs and seven RBI.
Now, I’m pretty sure Wells isn’t going to
ring up 200 homers and 300 runs batted in,
but it’s a series to build on.
Toronto young guns Adam Lind and Aaron
Hill are both coming off career seasons.
Now, the league should be hip to what they
can do, so they will need some protection in
the line-up. A slugging Wells can do just that.
Surely, Wells is not among the likes of Albert
Pujols or Joe Mauer at the plate. However,
if he can be that .300-30-100 bat in the
middle of the Jays order, the club will be that
much better offensively.
It is doubtful that at this point in his career,
the three-time AL Gold Glove recipient
will ever live up to his contract. It is a sticking
point for the media and the fans to be sure.
I promise to move on from mentioning the
contract in this space again. It’s there, it’s not
going anywhere and I will begrudgingly accept
it is time to move on.
And, for at least for one grand series in
Texas, Wells actually played like a $126-million
dollar man.
Even with the Blue Jays off to a pretty decent
start, it’s hard to imagine, even with
Wells lighting it up, that they will contend
in 2010. The American League East will be
a monster once again with the usual suspects
– New York, Boston, and Tampa Bay – sure
to rebound.
However, in 2011, Toronto has about $40
million dollars in contract commitments, or
about half of 2010.
fundamentals. To register for the Introductory
Clinic, please email kshir@telus.net Those
umpires wishing to further their knowledge,
are also encouraged to attend the Apr. 16-17
Level I and Level II National Umpire Certification
Program (NUCP) clinic. This clinic,
priced at $65 for Level I and $75 for Level II,
will be held at Lloyd Nolan Yard. For more
There are a few intriguing free agents available
for 2011: Tampa Bay’s Carl Crawford
and Carlos Pena or Boston’s Victor Martinez
to name a few. However, the Jays should really
just try to build from within.
Toronto can look to Minnesota for inspiration.
The Twins have put a competitive team
forth the past decade, winning five AL Central
division titles since the turn of the millennium
without ever shelling out Yankees or
Red Sox money for free agents.
Good scouting, drafting and player development
have aided the Twins immensely,
with the team’s payroll coming in at the $50-
$60 million mark over this span – much less
than the Blue Jays have shelled out.
This season, Minnesota is making more
headlines thanks to a new yard –Target Field
– and the signing of Mauer to an eight-year
and $184 million extension.
The Jays, under new General Manager
Alex Anthopoulos, have turned the corner
and begun a rebuilding process that former
GM JP Ricciardi never really committed to.
To compete with New York and Boston,
Toronto will need to accumulate as many
prospects as possible and grow them into
major leaguers, building a team on the (kinda)
cheap.
There’s not a lot of room for error, and a
Blue Jays fan base that hasn’t had much to
cheer about recently will need to remain patient.
It’s just the way of life in the AL East.
If the Jays ever figure it out, just think how
much more sweet it will be.
Are you ready for summer
The Boys and Girls Club of Lethbridge
is putting together a variety of fun activities,
crafts, guest speakers, off sites, experiments,
water games, outside activities and
the list goes on and on. We are excited for a
summer of fun and excitement. We also offer
a yummy afternoon snack which consists
of two food groups from the Canada Food
Guide. Our program starts on June 28th,
2010 and goes until August 27th, 2010. We
are open on Monday through Friday from
7:00am -6:00pm. However, we will be closed
on Canada Day in July and Heritage Day in
August.
This year our Summer Program theme is
“A Rockin` good Time” and children are divided
into peer groups with their own theme
name: “The Bouncin Bee gee’s (Kindergarten
2010? We sure are!
& Grade 1) “The Magic Monkey’s” (Grades
2 & 3) and “The Dangerous Def Leopards”
(Grades 4-6). Although their names fit
our main summer theme we also have fun
themes planned for each week, including:
Proud to be Canadian / Crazy about Culture
/ We love Lethbridge / When I grow
up… / Safety is #1 / I’m a rock star / We
are all animals / Life is a Game Show / and
Yeehaw Rodeo Week! The leaders of each
group have planned fun activities here at the
club and out in the community that fit each
weekly theme!
We have three assigned to each group and
each staff member has their child care certification
so you can rest assured your children
are in capable hands. We are happy to
announce that we have most of our part time
staff staying with us for the summer and it has
been the first summer that we have not had
to recruit new team members. Our wonderful
summer group leaders include: Kim Hunn,
Doug Harvie, Josh Hoetmer, Veronica
Smith, Taneil Wilson, Kelsey Snow, Kelsey
Folkard, Laura Twells and Michelle Ney.
We also have two staff, Rachael Hathorn
and Ashley Edgson, who helps with set up,
clean up, driving, preparation and delivery
of programs. The staff is very excited, looking
forward to a fun summer and they are all
putting in some great ideas to challenge the
youth. All of our staff is equipped with clear
criminal record checks, Class 4 and their First
Aid and CPR.
You can register for one week a couple of
weeks or the whole summer! The cost for
our program on a weekly basis is $125.00 per
week plus a $50.00 non refundable registra-
at 7:00am! Due to a short summer timeline
we are unable to reimburse if your child does
not attend. Hurry in to save you spot as they
will go quickly .
Another perk of being in the summer program
is that it allows you to get to know our
staff, our building and you will be better positioned
to register your child in the fall for the
2010/2010 school year. Fall registration begins
on August 3rd, 2010 and we have a limited
amount of space. However by being in
our summer program you get first notice of
fall registration, which improve your chances
of reserving your space. In the fall we will be
picking up and dropping off from the following
schools: Galbraith, Senator Buchanan,
Westminster and St. Paul’s.
Dreams do come true
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
This might be the year to have a dream
come true.
The Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation
recently launched its annual Dreamlife
Lottery, and there are loads of goodies up for
grabs. Giveaways this year include a grand
prize of $100,000 of tax free cash and a variety
of other prizes, like a 2010 Chevrolet
Camaro a 2010 Chevy Silverado, a Harley
Davidson motorcycle, a 2010 Springdale
Keystone travel trailer, and four vacations,
including trips to Vancouver, Victoria, Las
Vegas, and a Caribbean cruise. Of course,
there are tons of smaller prizes like electronic
gadgets, gas cards, and summer gear up for
grabs, as well.
Kandis Parascak, fund development coordinator
with foundation, says the lottery is
one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, and
the best part is that all money raised stays in
the local community for priority equipment
and special projects.
“We don’t send it up to Edmonton and
have it dispersed among everybody – 100 per
cent of the proceeds stay here in Lethbridge,”
she explains.
“We offer a lot of different ways for people
to support the foundation. Everyone has a
way of giving that feels best for them – some
people just give a straight donation, some
choose to give to the Christmas tree festival.
This is just another way of giving back
to your community – all the funds stay here,
and you have a chance of winning as well.”
One of the upcoming special projects is a
short stay house, which can be used by the
families of patients receiving hospital treat-
Kandis Parascak of the
Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation
ment.
“So if someone is here for cancer treatment
or for surgery, and they bring a family
member with them for support, that family
member can stay in the short stay house for
a very low cost,” says Parascak, adding that
the house is scheduled to open at the end of
the year.
The upcoming cancer radiation treatment
centre, set to open in June, will also receive
some of the proceeds from the lottery. In addition,
Parascak says the hospital will be doing
some beautification of its atrium.
“It hasn’t been refurbished since its opening,
so we’re going to do a little bit of updating
there.”
The foundation has a goal of raising
$1,000,000, which it can reach if the lottery
sells out.
“It’s something we’re really wanting to
achieve this year, and we’re hoping the public
will help us out with that,” says Parascak.
In addition to the three-packs and singles,
this year’s lottery offers a new way to play –
the nine-pack.
“We had requests from the public to offer
bigger packs – some of the other lotteries
offer the higher priced tickets as well, so we
thought we’d add a few,” explains Parascak.
Tickets cost $50 each, $100 for three, or
$250 for nine. The earlybird cutoff is April
23 with the draw going April 30, and the final
draw deadline is June 25 with the draw
on June 30. For more information or to purchase
tickets, call 403-320-8338 or visit www.
JOURNAL
(NC)—A bride’s wedding day is one of
the brightest days of her life and it is marked
by many magical and romantic moments.
When the time comes for you to say “I do,”
make sure you have a game plan to capture
all of these wonderful memories.
Here are some tips to ensure you make a
remarkable record of one of the most important
days of your life.
There is no “Take Two.” Research your
photographer and ensure he or she is a professional.
The photographer has only one
chance at capturing the bride, groom, wedding
party and ceremony. It is a good idea
for the photographer to visit the locations of
the ceremony and the reception prior to the
actual day so they are comfortable with the
lighting and requirements.
The dress isn’t the only thing that should
on your wedding day
be white. When you look back on your wedding
photos, you don’t want to be distracted
by having a less than perfect smile. Use a
power toothbrush, like the Philips Sonicare
Healthywhite, to let the natural whiteness of
your teeth shine through. This would also
make a wonderful gift for the wedding party.
After all, smiles make the picture.
Use the wonders of digital photography.
You can optimize on the speed of development.
Ask your photographer about the possibility
of displaying some of the photos digitally
at the reception after the ceremony. This
is also a nice touch for the guests that were
not at the ceremony.
You will always remember your wedding
day, but the photos will let you continue to
enjoy the fine details of each moment captured.

Jaci Zalesak loves her job. Of course, it’s
hard not to love doing something that leaves
everyone you meet smiling.
As a Welcome Wagon representative for
Lethbridge, Zalesak spends her days delivering
goodies to newcomers, new parents or
students. She loves being able to share in the
happy moments of people’s lives.
“I love it because you meet so many new
people and it’s a happy time for people,” she
says. “It’s nice to put a smile on people’s faces.”
Zalesak and the three other Lethbridge
representatives see about 100 new babies and
40-80 new residents a month - a guaranteed
recipe for the warm fuzzies.
“I love it
“It’s so much fun,”
says Zalesak.
In her nine years
as representative, Zalesak
has visited everyone
from refugees
to college students,
hailing from places
ranging from South
Africa to Toronto.
But even with that
many visits a month,
Zalesak says there are still many people who
don’t know what the Welcome Wagon is all
about. She points out the service goes far
beyond greeting newly-arrived residents, although
that is a major part of it.
“We’re widely recognized when people are
moving,” she says. “But it’s really primarily
for lifestyle changes.”
Besides the Community Welcome program
- which also provides gifts to those who
have moved within the city - Welcome Wagon
also runs Business Professional Welcome
On top of those programs, the Welcome
local businesses and services, fashion shows,
door prizes, gift bags and more.
Zalesak started her Welcome Wagon career
co-ordinating the Bridal Shows and had no
idea she’d love it so much.
“I’d always been interested in planning special
events and was looking for a way to work
from home,” she says. “Lo and behold, the
position for Bridal Show Co-ordinator came
open.”
Zalesak jumped at the chance and hasn’t
looked back.
“Now I (co-ordinate) all the programs in
the city,” she says. “It’s my full-time job.”
Besides the other three Lethbridge reps,
Zalesak works alongside one each from Coaldale,
Taber and Claresholm as well as two
from Pincher Creek. Last year, Zalesak won
the Pauline Hill National Award for being the
top representative in Canada for Baby Programs.
In honour of Zalesak’s achievement,
Welcome Wagon made a $2,000 donation to
the Chinook Regional Hospital.
This year - Welcome Wagon’s 80th anniversary
- Zalesak notes fellow Lethbridge representative
Judie Kopp is being recognized as
Regional Winner for Community Programs.
In celebration of 80 years representing
caring communities, Zalesak says local representatives
are hoping to reach even more
southern Albertans in 2010. As well, she
notes Welcome Wagon is planning to expand
again - adding a program for new grandparents
in the near future.
Zalesak encourages anyone who knows
someone who could benefit from a welcome
package from Welcome Wagon to call the
Lethbridge office at 403-327-3764 or to visit
welcomewagon.ca. As well, she notes that
clients do not have to be referred by a third
party - newcomers or new parents are encouraged
to call as well.

HOMES
Remember to report
your renos
JOURNAL
As the deadline to file a personal income tax return approaches,
many Albertans are starting to gather and organize
their paperwork, including any receipts for home improvements
that qualify for the Home Renovation Tax Credit. If
you completed any home renovations last year, be sure you
inform your insurance provider of any changes to your home
as you prepare to claim eligible expenses on your tax return.
“When you make significant improvements to your home,
it’s important to notify your home insurance company about
those renovations,” says Robert Katzell, vice president and
chief operating officer, AMA Insurance. “Your insurance
company can only provide coverage for what they know
about, so if you make major changes to your home, you need
to make sure your home insurance policy is up to date.”
When you complete renovations that increase the value
of your home, it will likely mean that your home insurance
premiums will increase as well, but that shouldn’t discourage
people from contacting their insurance company to update
their policies. The cost of an increase to your premiums may
be a small price to pay to ensure that the potentially more significant
cost of renovations you’ve completed will be covered
in case of damage or loss.
Notify the company that holds your home insurance policy
if you have made any of the following changes:
• Basement renovations
• Installing new hardwood flooring
• Remodelling your kitchen
• Adding an extension to your home
• Custom features, such as adding a sunroom or sauna
“Your home may be the single largest investment you ever
make, so you want to make sure you protect that investment,”
says Katzell. “Contact your insurance representative for more
information about how renovations can impact your home
insurance. Don’t wait until you need to file a claim to find out
that your home is underinsured.”
By Coach Greg Stonehocker
For the Lethbridge Journal
Do you ever find yourself saying this?
Well did you know that 2 out of 3 new
hires prove to be a mistake within the first
year – at a cost of thousands of dollars for
each departing employee? Hiring mistakes
negatively impact productivity and erode
your company’s profits. In Jim Collins’ landmark
study and book “Good to Great” he
states: “The good-to-great leaders understood
three simple truths.” 1) “If you begin
with ‘who’, rather than ‘what’, you can more
easily adapt to a changing world” 2) “If you
have the right people on the bus, the problem
of how to motivate and manage people
largely goes away” 3) “If you have the wrong
people, it doesn’t matter whether you discover
the right direction; you still won’t have a
great company.”
What would your business look like if your
hiring system delivered the right person 75%
of the time? Here are some quick tips to
stack the odds in your favor.
• Make sure you create thorough job
descriptions, including Skills, Competencies,
and Measures for success and growth.
• Marketing is not just for customers;
make sure you have a very specific marketing
approach for recruiting and hiring.
• Make your hiring a De-Selection
Process, design your process so that those
that have the character qualities will stand
out and those who don’t will leave or de-select
themselves, saving you time and hiring
mistakes.
• Have your written Vision, Mission,
and Culture statements on hand during all
interviews to communicate the high standards
of behavior and performance expected
by all within your company.
Now what? It all comes down to passion,
confidence, and the desire to grow. These
attributes are much more important than
just knowledge or experience, which can be
taught. Stay disciplined and only interview
candidates who match these criteria.
Finally believe you can and you will”. Too
often we defeat ourselves before we start.
Telling your self ‘I just can’t get good help’ becomes
a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead, start
telling yourself “I have a great team committed
to achieving our goals”. Even if it’s not yet
true – YOU can make it so. Remember, the
objective when hiring is to be able to say 3
years later that, “Knowing what I know now,
I’d hire this person again in a heartbeat!”
Last year, 4600 Canadians were
afflicted with kidney cancer.
1600 of them lost their lives.
• More common in men than in women, kidney cancer is
most often found in people over the age of 50. There is no
single cause of kidney cancer, but certain factors increase
the risk of developing it.
• By maintaining a normal body weight and blood pressure,
and having a diet rich in fruits and root vegetables, the risk
of developing kidney cancer can be lessened.
• Some symptoms of kidney problems include back or side
pain that doesn’t go away, unexplained weight loss, chronic
fatigue, or a lump in the side or abdomen.
• This is a cancer that “hides” well until it is advanced. Don’t
ignore your body’s signal that something might be wrong.
If you feel persistent pain in your back, particularly in the
‘around the waist’ region, visit your family doctor.
Winter driving can be especially hard on brakes, some of the warning signs are
brake noise, including excessive grinding, squealing, screeching, chatter, or brake
pulsation. If you notice any of these symptons have your brakeschecked.
JOURNAL
CAREERS TIP OF THE WEEK:
www.hire-standard.com
Correcting ar tfully
For several years, I directed volunteer
choirs. Being effective required not only musical
skills, but a great deal of diplomacy. As
a young college graduate in my early 20s, I
had to quickly learn how to criticize artfully.
Adult choirs were comprised of people of
varied ability, ages, and interests. Although
the term was not used at the time, I now realize
that choral directing required emotional
intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to
identify, assess, and manage the emotions of
one’s self, of others, and of groups. While research
into emotional intelligence was conducted
throughout the 20th century, it wasn’t
until Daniel Goleman’s book, Emotional Intelligence:
Why It Can Matter More Than IQ,
published in 1995, that the term became part
of popular culture.
Highly effective bosses possess high levels
of emotional intelligence. Nowhere is
emotional intelligence more necessary than
when supervisors have to correct others.
Goleman states, “used artfully, feedback on
competencies can be a priceless tool for selfexamination
and for cultivating change and
growth. Used poorly, it can be an emotional
bludgeon.”
To some extent, bosses can neither predict
WAY FOR BUSINESS
nor prevent emotional fallout from correction.
Many factors influence how people respond
to negative feedback. A person with
a high sense of self-worth or self-confidence
will generally respond more favorably and
be able to process criticism more readily
and constructively. Persons with low self esteem
or those who have experienced hurtful
criticism may become defensive or be easily
crushed by correction, no matter how well
intended. While bosses cannot be fully responsible
for how subordinates receive correction,
they can develop skills to minimize
negative fallout.
Consider the following when correcting:
• Be sure of the facts. Wise managers
do not correct based on hearsay. Have appropriate
documentation in place.
• Be sensitive to timing. If corrective
action is essential to meet a deadline, then
certainly it must be done promptly. In such
cases, take extra care not to simply respond
in the heat of the moment. Correction, when
given as a part of a regularly scheduled meeting
that includes regular feedback, is usually
easier to give and less risky than scheduling a
meeting only for corrective purposes.
• Correct in private. Rebuking someone
in public will significantly increase the
emotional fallout and also jeopardize the
leader’s standing with others in the team.
• Using the “sandwich technique” is
a wise strategy when communicating bad
news. Always begin with something positive.
Affirm the individual and some aspect
of their job performance. This first step will
soften the impact of correction. When correcting,
managers would do well to follow
a Dale Carnegie human relations principle:
“talk about your own mistakes before criticizing
others.” The sandwich concludes with
a positive, affirming statement.
• Address the action or behavior rath-
“Bill, the way
you reacted in
this situation
seemed out of
character for
you. Is there
something
else going
on?”
er than the person.
Dale Carnegie
advises that we
give people a fine
reputation to live
up to. Sometimes,
correction can
be given in a way
that doesn’t demean
the person
e.g. “Bill, the way
you reacted in this
situation seemed
out of character
for you. Is there
something else going on?”
• Use open-ended questions e.g. “help
me to understand…” or “how do you think
this should have been handled?”
in any employment field. There are many
online sites that offer free tutorials and
games that help to increase your speed.
Try www.freetypinggame.net.
• Avoid excessive use of “you” and focus
more on the behavior that needs correcting.
• Examine your own heart before
criticizing. Is the behavior truly worth addressing
or are you merely voicing your own
frustrations?
• Don’t overreact if the employee’s
initial response is unfavorable, defensive, or
even emotional. Receiving criticism is not
easy. Some recipients will need time to cool
down or to reflect on what has been said.
• Develop a “contract” for change that
is mutually agreeable.
• Follow up on decisions that have
been made to assess progress or lack of progress.
Correction is one of the roles of a manager.
While not easy, artful criticism can be
learned. The purpose of correction and the
desired outcome is summarized by Kohn and
O’Connell: “addressing a performance issue
should lead not only to improved work, but
to a higher level of trust in the manager’s
competency and willingness to address future
problems in a similarly constructive way.
There is truth in the maxim that a relationship
gets stronger during and after a crisis.”
Page 30 - LETHBRIDGE JOURNAL - WEEK OF APRIL 15, 2010
By Bill Axtell
For The Lethbridge Journal
The Lethbridge Public Library is far
more than a place of books, magazines, CD’s
and DVD’s. It’s also the venue for a long list
of various events and activities to stimulate
the intellect and imaginations of people of all
ages.
For example, on Thursday, April 22, local
author Anita Horrocks will launch her first
picture book book, Silas’s Seven Grandparents.
Everyone is invited to join Anita to hear
her read from her new book and talk about
her writing. The launch will be held in the
community meeting downstairs at the library
from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and is arranged by
the Lethbridge Children’s Literature Roundtable.
Everyone is welcome to attend!
According to Elisabeth Hegerat, Coordinator
of Youth Services for the Library, other
activities for children include the upcoming
“Ready, Set, Read” summer reading program
that pairs readers in grades one to three with
volunteers in grades four to twelve, a family
literacy program called “Rhyme Time” that
takes place out in the community, and story
time programs for babies, toddler and preschoolers
held throughout the year. She also
described the Library’s new for 2010 Spelling
Mini-Bee, launched in February for students
in grades one to three.
“The goals of our new spelling Mini-Bee
are to increase vocabulary and learning
skills, prepare students to enter the Canspell
Bee when they reach grade four, and to encourage
a love of language and learning” Hegerat
said.
“We were thrilled to learn this month that
the Lethbridge Public Library was awarded
the Stan Heath Achievement in Literacy
Award, presented by the Library’s trustee
association,” Hegerat said. The award recognized
the Library’s significant contribution
to the advancement of literacy in Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge and Regina Public Libraries
were co-winners of the award, which will be
formally presented in June.
“We got our young spellers ready for the
competition with three prior weeks of Saturday
afternoon study sessions held at the Library,”
Elisabeth explained. “Each Saturday
afternoon they practiced spelling exercises
and spelling games. Then, at the final session,
the children lined up to practice spelling
words aloud in a trial run for the actual Bee.”
“On the day of the competition,” she
added, “twelve students participated, progressing
from grade one words to grade five
words in the final rounds. Every participant
succeeded in the first few rounds; no one was
eliminated until Round Three.
“Their young ages did not stop the children
from understanding the rules or the
process; every child was fully composed in
front of the audience,” she said, pleased.
The winner, Tyler Black, (see photo) who
won the championship by correctly spelling
the word “brighten,” received a trophy
donated by The Engravers, a local engraving
and trophy company. “Amazingly, Tyler
and his young rivals made it through nine
rounds, spelling far beyond their grade and
age level,” Elisabeth commented. “All the
children exceeded our expectations.”
Hegerat expressed appreciation to the
volunteer judging panel who are members
of the University of Lethbridge faculty. The
same panel members also served on the regional
Canspell Bee. Moreover, volunteer
students from the University of Lethbridge
Literature Club helped organize the participants,
escorting spellers from the state when
they were eliminated. Every participant was
given a bag of small prizes presented at they
left the platform.
Based upon its successful first year, the Library
plans to offer the Mini-Bee program
again next year.
Jeff McLarty, the Library’s Community
Support Facilitator, in considering the numerous
programs for children, commented
that “persons willing to support the Library
through its Branching Out Program to fill
up the new Crossings Branch in West Lethbridge
are giving their financial contributions
to a Lethbridge program with one of
the broadest reaches into all levels of local
potentially helping everyone.”
In a joint fund-raising project with the
Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge, the Library
is selling keys which could unlock a special
$500 for the 10 winning keys plus a chance to
