COVER STORY
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
Fighting unmentionable
cancers
Yvonne Bainbridge and boyfriend Mike
Glendinning are committed to fighting unmentionable
cancers of all types.
The so-called “unmentionables” are cancers
below the waist, including colorectal,
bladder, testicular, ovarian, and others. Because
the areas affected by these cancers are
relatively private, they often don’t get the attention
of other, more prominent cancers.
Bainbridge is director of Saving Third
Base, a local fundraising team that will be
participating in The Underwear Affair, a
unique awareness-raising event in Calgary
in June. The affair is held annually in major
cities across Canada, and sees participants
strip down to their undies and run or walk
to draw attention and raise money to combat
cancers below the waist.
“It all depends on how adventurous or how
crazy you’re feeling. You’ll have some people
who actually wear just the underwear, and
you’ll have some who put them on top of
clothes, that sort of thing,” says Bainbridge,
who will be participating for the fourth time.
She was spurred to get involved in the
event when Mike was diagnosed with cancer
while the couple lived in Kelowna. While
Mike received treatment in Vancouver, Bainbridge,
first took part in the affair.
“It was my way of feeling like I was doing
something productive instead of standing by
and watching him go through it all,” she explains.
Donning boxer shorts and a tank top,
Bainbridge thought she was being quite adventurous,
but soon learned otherwise.
“The first year around, I thought I was
pretty out-there until I got to the event. Vancouver
is much more adventurous in Calgary,
and it’s in July, so it’s a tad bit warmer,”
she says.
Several people on the fundraising team
have expressed their reluctance to run
Mike Glendining of RV Field of Dreams will
be in the Ride to Conquer Cancer
around in their underwear, but they’re reassured
when Bainbridge reminds them of the
much more uncomfortable situations faced
by victims of below-the-waist cancers.
“Just get yourself out there and go for it.”
Mike is also throwing himself out there to
combat cancer, but in a much more strenuous
way – he’ll be participating in the 2010 Alber-
ta Ride to Conquer Cancer in Calgary, a 200
km bike ride that takes place over two days in
June. Participants begin at Spruce Meadows
in Calgary and ride along the Rockies before
ending the first day at Chain Lakes Provincial
Park. Mike’s cancer was largely located in his
leg, and Bainbridge says the race will be a test
for him.
“For him, his leg is a huge factor, so actually
being able to get out there and use the
bike and do that kind of a distance is going to
be a big challenge for him and his leg.”
The pair recently organized a car wash
and BBQ to raise pledges for their respective
events. Bainbridge says it’s all in an effort to
put an end to diseases that affect thousands
of people across Alberta.
“It’s actually quite amazing how many people
it does affect,” she explains.
Good Earth supports good causes
LETHBRIDGE, AB. – Good Earth Coffeehouse
and Bakery, an environmentally responsible
chain of specialty coffeehouses, is
proud to be the world’s first retailer of Earth
Coffee, an Organic and Fair Trade coffee that
donates 100% of its net profits to the United
Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
For every bag of Earth Coffee purchased, a
child is fed for a week. The global food pandemic
claims of the life of a child every six
seconds and the WFP is the largest humanitarian
agency fighting hunger worldwide.
As part of its 2010 Earth Day actions, Good
Earth is selling bags of Earth Coffee (www.
earthcoffee.org) at all Good Earth locations
until May 16th, and will be giving away free
coffee on Earth Day, April 22 to anyone who
makes a donation to the WFP at the Lethbridge
Good Earth location at 2424 Fairway
Plaza South.
Additionally, street teams from Good
Earth will be in action around the Lethbridge
Good Earth cafe rewarding “random acts of
green” by Lethbridge citizens. Teams will
hand out earth-friendly gifts, including reusable
tote bags and Bernard Callebaut Chocolate
bars (provided by Bullfrog Power).
“We support Earth Day and we want to reward
other people who support it,” says Nan
Eskenazi, Co-Founder, Good Earth Coffeehouse
and Bakery. “The Earth Coffee promotion
helps feed hungry children worldwide,
and our Street Teams connect us to those
people who are doing their part to lighten
their eco-footprint.”
Good Earth’s environmental initiatives
include bullfrog powering all of its locations
with 100 per cent green electricity (for
an emissions footprint reduction of over
700 tonnes of CO2 per year), using organic
ingredients in a variety of the items on its
menu, serving Rainforest Alliance Certified,
organic, fair trade, and shade-grown coffees,
and reducing materials and waste wherever
possible.
Research shows massive
ice cap is shrinking
CALGARY, AB. – Close to 50 years of
data show the Devon Island ice cap, one of
the largest ice masses in the Canadian High
Arctic, is thinning and shrinking.
A paper published in the March edition
of Arctic, the journal of the University of
Calgary’s Arctic Institute of North America,
reports that between 1961 and 1985, the ice
cap grew in some years and shrank in others,
resulting in an overall loss of mass.
But that changed 1985 when scientists began
to see a steady decline in ice volume and
area each year.
“We’ve been seeing more mass loss since
1985,” says Dr. Sarah Boon, lead author on
the paper and a Geography Professor at the
University of Lethbridge.
The reason for the change? Warmer summers.
The High Arctic is essentially a desert
with low rates of annual precipitation. There
is little accumulation of snow in the winter
and cool summers, with temperatures at or
below freezing, serve to maintain levels. Any
increase of snow and ice takes years.
This delicate equilibrium is easily upset.
One warm summer can wipe out five years
of growth. And though the accelerated melting
trend began in 1985, the last decade has
seen four years with unusually warm summers
- 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008.
“What we see during these warm summers
is the extent of the melt is greater,” says
Boon about the results of a five-year remote
sensing study that ran between 2000 and
2004.
The white surfaces of snow and ice reflect
heat – a process known as the albedo effect.
Retreating ice exposes dark soil and gravel,
which absorb heat and increase the melt rate
of ice along the periphery of the cap. But it’s
not only the edges of the cap that are losing
ice. At lower altitudes the ice is thinning as
well.
Changes to the Devon ice cap, which covers
approximately 14,400 sq. km, could have
multiple impacts on everything from ship
traffic to sea level.
There has already been an increase in the
number of icebergs calving off from outlet
glaciers that flow into the ocean. Boon explains
that melt water runs between the bottom
of the glacier and the ground, creating
a slippery cushion that allows the glacier to
slide forward more rapidly than it would in
colder conditions.
“There are a lot of things we need to consider.
One is the iceberg calving and its implications
for shipping. These things don’t
just go away, they float out into the ocean,”
says Boon. A second area of concern is the
contribution of increased glacier melt to rising
sea level.
The work of Boon and her colleagues demonstrates
the importance of long-term research.
Work on Devon Island began in 1961
with researchers from the Arctic Institute of
North America, including long-time Arctic
scientist Roy ‘Fritz’ Koerner, who was part
of the current study until his death in 2008.
This ongoing research, which is continuing
thanks to federal International Polar year
funding, has created a comprehensive dataset
that contributes to the understanding of the
complex play between the ice cap, the atmosphere
and the ocean.
“We all know long-term studies are important
but they are really hard to pay for.”
Lethbridge Festival.
In the interest of preserving history for
future generations and celebrating the 1885-
1985 Centennial of the City of Lethbridge,
the Time Capsule Committee placed the
Time Capsules in three chambers under a
concrete crypt twenty-five years ago.
The crypt is located at the top of the coulees
on 1st Avenue South, between the High Level
Bridge and the Lethbridge Brewery Gardens.
The crypt consists of three chambers holding
the color coded capsules to be opened at the
25 Year (Silver – May 4, 2010), 50 Year (Gold
– 2035) and 100 Year (Platinum – 2085) anniversaries.
Each capsule is stored with nitrogen and
vacuum sealed, and contains information
about individuals, families, churches, organizations,
schools, lodges, businesses, civic offices
and factories in Lethbridge in 1985.
“ The unearthing on Tuesday, May 4th will
simply be to bring the 25 Year capsules out
of the Crypt and move them to a location
to open in a safety controlled environment”,
says Mayor Bob Tarleck. He adds, “Once Galt
Museum & Archives staff confirm the condition
of the contents, time capsule participants
are welcome to pick up their items at the Galt
Museum & Archives on Friday and Saturday
May 7th and 8th from 1:00-4:00pm.”
Flexahopper Plastics Inc, the local company
that placed the contents into the capsules
in 1985, will once again be on hand to move
and open the 25 Year Time Capsule.
“We are excited to celebrate a part of our
Lethbridge history,” comments Robin Hopkins,
Board member of the Galt Museum &
Archives. “Our volunteers and staff will be
ready to assist recipients with their message
from the past.”
The public is advised that on-site parking is
very limited, and it is recommended for those
wishing to attend the crypt opening to park
east of Scenic Drive South and walk to the
site. More information on the 25 Year Time
Strange weather
we’re having...
I’ve lived in Lethbridge all of my life and
as I’ve been saying on both my Lounge Radio
show and Global News, this has been the
strangest weather year I’ve ever seen. We’ve
had cold, we’ve had fog-a lot of fog-(thought
I had been transported to Vancouver for a
couple of days) we’ve had wind and of course
spring snow. Not to say that the weird never
happens around here, its just been happening
with regularity. Weird has become the norm.
However last week’s spring storm could not
compete with the defending champion of
spring snow storms, 1967. That one was nasty.
Last week depending on where you were,
we had between 20 and 30 cm of snow. On
April 28, 1967 we had 52.8 cm.
That was just the beginning. By April 30
there was 86 cm of snow on the ground. Revenue
Canada even gave taxpayers an extension
on the April 30th deadline to file their
taxes. Now that’s a serious storm.
Vulcan is getting very excited about the
arrival of one Dr. Spock. Unless you’ve been
hiding under a snowstorm for a year, you’ve
heard that legendary actor Leonard Nimoy
will make an official visit this Friday beginning
about 2:30pm. Tourism coordinator
of Vulcan Dayna Dickens has been working
tirelessly and is absolutely thrilled this
is really going to happen. She tells me she’s
hoping the storms have all hit southern Alberta
for the spring and everything will go
smoothly. She adds that she’s getting a lot of
interest from everywhere and wouldn’t be
surprised if Access Hollywood covers the
event. She hopes to have one brief moment
with Nimoy so she can introduce herself as
the woman who didn’t believe it was really
Leonord Nimoy she was talking to on the
phone when he personally called her to endorse
the people of Vulcan getting to see a
premiere of the latest Star Trek movie.
April Showers Bring
According to recent statistics, if everyone
on the planet used resources at the rate Canadians
do, we would need five planet Earths to
sustain us. If the people living in some of those
other countries had to go through our winters,
however, they just might not want to be sustained.
We are a big, cold nation for at least eight
months out of the year and it takes a lot of energy
to keep our frozen extremities warm. If
the United Nations had a drive-thru window
where you could order a country to go and
supersize it, Canada is what they would throw
in your bag, along with A Don Cherry bobblehead
doll for the kids.
But are these just excuses? Maybe. It’s hard
to cut back, but April 22 is Earth Day, a time to
consider how much waste we produce.
The first place to start is the amount of gas
we burn. Is it really necessary to drive from the
house to the mailbox at the end of the block? I
have been guilty of this myself, usually on days
when I’m watching TV on the couch and don’t
feel like putting my shoes on.
What about green transportation alternatives?
A new poll has found that more people
in the province would ride their bike to work if
they didn’t fear for their safety on the streets. I
wonder if these are the same people who think
texting and driving are safe? I also wonder if
this is just something people say when they’re
asked the question. For some people, it doesn’t
matter how safe cycling is, there is just no
chance they are going to get the old ten speed
down from the rafters of the garage and take it
out for a spin while it’s all dusty and the tires
are flat.
Water is another area Canadians seem to
take for granted. Have you ever looked out an
airplane window at 30,000 feet? There are so
many fresh water lakes it looks like a backyard
dotted with puddles after a rain. But our supply
is finite. The planet doesn’t make more water
– it just keeps moving it around. We don’t
have a lot of drinking water. The numbers are
fascinating – the Earth’s surface is 70 per cent
covered by water, but only three per cent of that
is fresh water and only 1 per cent is suitable for
drinking.
The experts say the Great Lakes’ water levels
have come up a little bit, but overall they’re still
quite low – low enough to cause problems for
boaters, beach goers and the shipping industry.
Boaters have been hitting the bottom, the
shipping industry finds the water too shallow
in some shipping lanes and beach goers find
the hike from the parking lot to the edge of
the water, which is now three miles away, just
too much, especially while carrying a cooler,
beach umbrella, sand toys, sunscreen, towels, a
blanket, water wings, a full size blow up whale
and other assorted items for a day at the beach.
These are the same people who drive to get the
mail, so you can see the hardship.
An Ottawa think tank is calling on the Canadian
government to come up with a comprehensive
strategy for dealing with this country’s
fresh water before U.S. demand for it starts to
grow. The fact is that Canada has seven per
cent of the world’s supply of fresh water, and by
2015, it’s estimated that 24 per cent of American
medium-sized cities and 17 per cent of its
large-sized cities will suffer from serious water
shortages.
The problem is that water is covered under
the NAFTA trading agreement. Basically, there
are concerns that the U.S. and Mexico may
come looking for our water, and under NAF-
TA, we will have to sell it to them. There has
already been a pact signed by the states and the
provinces that surround the great lakes not to
sell off all of the water. However, the Governor
of Ohio has already been rumbling about selling
the water from lake Erie, because it would
be big money for the state.
Drinking water sustains life, and it will soon
become a commodity to be traded, like pork
bellies, bananas and lumber. Futurists are predicting
this will become the major world geopolitical
issue in the not-too-distant future.
Some believe that global warming will hit the
U.S. south hard, turning it into the desert of the
east, and causing states to want to build a pipeline
from Canada so they can water their lawns
Free Classifieds CALL 403-320-8936
and fill their pools. Paul Wittbey of water consultant
GWEST LLC of Washington D.C. has
estimated the cost of building a pipeline from
Manitoba to Texas at $9 billion. It sounds a little
crazy, but even at that cost, bulk water sales to
the U.S. are already being hinted at by American
politicians.
Old is New Again
Originally, people used cloth sacks to transport
goods, and then paper bags came along.
One little spill from a container or some condensation
from the ice cream, and suddenly the
bottom was falling out of it and the groceries
were spilling all over the ground. So the switch
was made to plastic, and they did a better job.
However, in the quest for more profits, they
kept finding ways to make plastic bags thinner
and thinner. One nick in that stretched plastic,
and your groceries were all over the ground
again.
Environmentalists started pushing the idea of
using reusable bags for grocery shopping, and I
couldn’t be happier. I can load my reusable bags
up with as much weight as I can lift. Hauling
groceries around has never been easier. I have
large plastic bags filled with hundreds of smaller
plastic bags jammed in a kitchen drawer.
The plastic bag people say that we shouldn’t
completely ditch their product, because they
can be recycled and melted down to be turned
into more plastic bags. In their original form,
they use oil and other chemicals when they’re
being made. My cloth bags don’t use much in
their construction, and they’ll last so much longer.
It’s actually kind of refreshing to move back
to some older technologies to solve some of
today’s current problems. Ridding society of
plastic bags is just another step toward a better
planet for the kids, who may grow up never
knowing the pain of dropping a can of beans on
their toes. That alone should be reason enough
to make the move.

Spring cleaning
JOURNAL
Well, it’s that time of the year. Spring has
sprung with two feet of snow here in Southern
Alberta. However, soon everyone in our
neck of the woods will have the chance to
tidy things up after another winter – a time
to do some spring-cleaning. In that spirit, it’s
also an opportunity to clean out some of the
sports detritus that has built up in my brain.
• I really want to see a Chicago/
Washington Stanley Cup Final. What a treat
it would be for hockey fans if the Blackhawks
and Capitals were to meet up in June. Now
that I have proposed this, there is a 0.004 per
cent chance of it happening. Both teams have
the same question marks – defence and goaltending
– so this dream meeting (of mine) is
fraught with peril. Still, seeing the two “most
talented” NHL clubs go at it for a championship
is infinitely more appealing than seeing,
say, a New Jersey/Phoenix clash.
• The Edmonton Oilers have won the
NHL Draft Lottery, and will now pick first
overall in Los Angeles in June. Unless Kevin
Lowe somehow usurps Steve Tambellini’s
power, one of two OHL superstars – Tyler
Seguin or Taylor Hall – will be selected by
the Oil. Either way, Edmonton should be
adding a fine talent to its organization. After
years and years of mostly fruitless drafting,
the Oilers are on the verge of what they
hope is a Blackhawks-like infusion of young,
skilled skaters. Add this year’s top choice
with other highly regarded prospects in the
system, like Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson,
and Oilers fans can look to
the future with hope.
• Unfortunately for Edmonton, Sheldon
Souray is trying to rain on the parade.
ke
FOR WHAT IT’S
WORTH
M A R T Y B A C E D A
The 33-year-old wants a trade out of the Capital.
The defenceman had a horrible 2009-
2010 campaign, with just four goals and nine
assists in 37 games, along with a –19 rating.
After previously missing 16 games recovering
from a concussion, Souray’s season came
to an end in February when he broke his
hand in a fight against Calgary’s Jarome Iginla.
The Elk Point native has claimed management
pushed him to return sooner from
injury than he was comfortable with when
he first joined the team. Souray had shoulder
surgery in his first season with the Oil. A
trade would be good for both sides, but with
Souray on the books for two more seasons at
cap hit of $5.4 million per, that’s easier said
than done.
• This is no stretch, but I will be
shocked if anybody but the Philadelphia
Phillies make the World Series out of the National
League. The team added the best pitcher
in baseball – Roy Halladay – from Toronto
in the off-season. While Halladay bolsters
the pitching staff, it’s the everyday line-up
the Phils can put out there that may just be
one of the best of all-time. There are perennial
MVP candidates Chase Utley and Ryan
Howard hitting third and fourth. Jimmy Rollins
(although he’s on the disabled list at the
moment), Placido Polanco, Jayson Werth,
Raul Ibanez, Shane Victorino and Carlos
Ruiz bolster the dynamic duo. I know it’s
early, but through nine games Philadelphia
was averaging 7.6 runs per contest. The record
is about 6.8 runs per game put up by the
Babe Ruth/Lou Gehrig led 1931 New York
Yankees. Sure, it’s early, and a dodgy bullpen
may put a damper on things, but the Phillies
can rake. Add some weak pitching staffs in
the N.L. East, the 2008 champs will pile up
runs and are in good shape to add another
pennant at Citizens Bank Park.
• The NBA playoffs will provide basketball
fans two-plus great months of drama.
The way I see it, six or seven teams have a
legitimate shot at winning the Larry O’Brien
Trophy. In the east, it looks like a two-team
race between Cleveland and Orlando. Perhaps
Atlanta can join the mix, but (unfortunately)
Boston’s window has closed. I liked
Milwaukee – Fear the Deer! – except they
lost starting centre Andrew Bogut to a season-ending
arm injury. Look for the Bucks to
contend in the next couple of years. I expect
LeBron James and the Cavaliers to make it to
the Finals, as the Magic have Vince Carter.
Toronto fans know all too well how VC performs
come crunch-time.
make an argument that every team has an
opportunity to win its opening round series.
The eighth seed is Oklahoma City, led
by the league-scoring champ Kevin Durant.
The Thunder draw the Los Angeles Lakers,
and Kobe Bryant and the defending champs
will have to be at their best to defeat a young
and up-and-coming team. Dallas plays San
Antonio, and while the Spurs look like the
Celtics-west, Tim Duncan and company may
have one more run in them. The third seed,
Phoenix, plays Portland. The Trail Blazers are
without leading scorer Brandon Roy. However,
Rip City has had more than its share
of injuries, yet overcame them to make the
tournament. It just may be Steve Nash’s last
true chance at a title, as the Suns appear to be
on the verge of making some major changes
in the summer (and he’s 36-years-old. No, for
real!). The four versus five match-up features
Denver and Utah, two of the association’s
best home sides. It all adds up for a great first
round. The west will be won by attrition, let’s
say by Phoenix (going with the heart there).
I think that leaves the Cavs in prime position,
after an easier road out east. And really,
doesn’t Cleveland deserve something to
cheer about?
SKIN CANCER
The most common of all cancers, skin cancer
accounts for 1/3 of all new cancer cases in Canada.
• Skin is the largest organ in your body. It protects your body
from injury, infection, heat, pollution and damaging light from
the sun.
• Skin is comprised of two layers; the dermis and epidermis.
Various factors may cause damage to these layers, allowing
for skin cancers to develop. However, skin cancers are most
often a result of overexposure to the sun or other harmful UV
rays.
• Most cases of skin cancer are preventable, simply by covering
the skin or using sunscreen when in direct sunlight.
• There are two major forms of skin cancer. Non-melanomas
progress slowly and are treatable, while malignant melanomas
are much more dangerous.
• Moles, sores, growths or colour changes on the skin are
usually harmless, but not always. It is important to examine
your body’s surface once a month and be checked over by a
physician once a year.
Simple ways to
protect the planet
(NC)—We all know it’s important to care for the environment, but sometimes it’s just not
convenient to follow through. There are many ways to reduce your carbon footprint with
minimal change to your lifestyle. Do the Earth a favour and challenge yourself to commit to
one or more of these ideas:
At home
• Take shorter showers.
• Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth.
• Unplug seldom used appliances. Plugged in appliances that are turned off still sap energy.
At work
• Bring your own coffee mug or water bottle.
• Reuse misprints as scrap paper.
JOURNAL
(NC)—Germaphobes beware! Did you
know that more bacteria and mold grow in
vehicles than in houses? Or, that the typical
car has 283 different types of bacteria present
in every square inch? These stats are
not meant to scare you away from driving,
instead they’re offered to provide awareness
of the best ways to protect yourself and
your passengers from harmful contaminates.
Below are tips from Honeywell Consumer
Products Group, on the best ways to minimize
in-vehicle irritants.
Replace your Cabin Air Filter: Airborne
contaminants, such as pollen, exhaust
fumes, soot and dust enter a vehicle through
its heating, air conditioning and defrosting
systems. A cabin air filter is designed to help
capture and remove some of these pollutants
drivers healthy
in order to help improve air quality throughout
the vehicle. Today most vehicles come
with a cabin air filter, but if it’s not changed
regularly (at least once a year) the filter may
become dirty and clogged, which makes it
harder to keep air clean. Cabin air filters not
only remove road dust and particles passing
through it, but the Fram Fresh Breeze also
contains Arm and Hammer baking soda in
order to absorb odours passing through a vehicle’s
ventilation system.
“One of the easiest ways to ensure less invehicle
pollutants is to install a quality cabin
air filter,” said Megan Currie for Honeywell
Consumer Products Group. “The Fram Fresh
Breeze filter removes 98 percent of 5-100 micron
pollen particles and road dust from the
air passing through your filter.”
The Dodge Avenger shares a platform with the Sebring, and its aggressive looks are befitting
the front being similar looking to the Charger. The same goes for the flanks; blocky, and
the kick up around the rear doors and sloping roof line are nice touches and make the car
Roadside Assistance: 60 mths / unlimited kms
In Summary:
The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart’s rear seats are comfortable and spacious, and they conveniently
fold flat via release handles in the trunk area. But the most impressive is the
good balance of ride comfort and handling. Corners are attacked with a tangibly stronger
connection through the wheel and more confidence in the grip. Mitsubishi has found the
better suspension compromise for sport-minded drivers.
Real Estate
Services Ltd.
JOURNAL
By Jeff Wiebe
For the Lethbridge Journal
When it comes to dancing, Darryl Hodgins means business.
Hodgins is the creator of Dance Power, a competition that
has given young dancers across western Canada a chance to
strut their stuff for almost 20 years. Dance Power recently
visited Lethbridge, and groups came from as far as Edmonton,
Calgary, Brooks, Fernie and Medicine Hat to compete.
Dance Power got its start in 1992 when Hodgins, a graduate
of the University of Alberta with degrees in both Arts and
Commerce, decided to marry his two passions. He and two
partners formed Dance Power Enterprises, and the journey
began.
“It was a natural progression to the competition business,
as it combines my two passions, which are dance and
business,” explains Hodgins, who has been immersed in the
dance industry since age five and has trained in many disciplines,
including tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, Ukrainian,
drama and voice.
Dance Power visits cities across Alberta and B.C. and gives
aspiring dancers a fun but professional way to demonstrate
their skills. Dance troupes are grouped according to age, discipline,
and years of training, and are judged by a panel of
three experts. All genres of dance are represented, are there
are valuable prizes up for grabs – Dance Power gives out
more than $5,000 at each event it holds, in addition to dance
camp scholarships and choreography awards for teachers.
“We have been told many times that our events are relaxed,
friendly and fun. Every season, we survey our audience
members, clients and dancers for ways that we can improve
and change and we take these comments seriously and have
made changes each season as a result of these suggestions,”
says Hodgins.
“Even though we have been in business 18 years, we look at
each year as an opportunity for us to learn, grow and change.
We are firm believers in continuous improvement.”
The nature of a touring competition means Hodgins and
his staff are away from home for long periods of time, which
makes it all the more vital that everyone involved is passionate
about the work.
“Our entire team loves what we do. It is not an easy business
– we travel for three months each year, so we are away
from our families for extended periods of time and work very
long hours,” says Hodgins.
And as reality shows like Dancing With The Stars and So
You Think You Can Dance have risen in popularity, so too has
Hodgins seen dancing’s profile increase across the country.
“I definitely feel that the dance-reality shows have increased
the exposure and appeal of the dance industry in general.
Even five years ago, it would have been difficult to sell out a
500-seat theatre for a dance company, and now So You Think
You Can Dance Canada top 10 dancers tour to large capacity
arenas across Canada,” he says.
“The dance industry in Canada has always been quite large
and successful, but very few outside of the dance world knew
about us. The difference in the last few years is that people
now see and realize how incredibly talented Canadian dancers
are.”
Lets review!
JOURNAL
Over the past number of weeks, we have
been considering six habits of highly effective
bosses based on the insights of Stephen
E. Kohn and Vincent D. O’Connell. The authors
contend that each of these habits form
building blocks of a pyramid and when managers
incorporate these essentials into their
leadership tool kit, they will meet with success.
To date we have noted that highly effective
bosses:
• Are self-aware. They know their
strengths and weaknesses. They recognize
personal blind spots and govern emotions.
• Practice empathy. They listen intently
– not to respond but to understand.
They genuinely desire to understand the
unique temperament, background, and situation
of each person for whom they are responsible.
• Apply the Golden Rule in all interactions.
They assess their responses and decisions
by considering how they would want
others to act in matters affecting them. They
treat people fairly.
• Are relationally oriented, yet establish
and maintain professional boundaries so
as not to undermine their leadership and authority.
• Correct artfully. They provide feedback
without causing unnecessary injury.
The sixth habit of highly effective bosses
is the capstone of the management pyramid.
Effective bosses know the unique temperament
of each employee and are able to flex
their leadership style accordingly.
Less effective bosses often display qualities
of Procrustes, a villain in Greek mythology.
Procrustes, a son of Poseidon, had an iron
bed in which he invited every passer-by to
spend the night. If the guest proved too tall
for the bed, Procrustes would amputate the
excess length to make the person fit; if the
subject was too short, he would stretch the
WAY FOR BUSINESS
hapless traveler. According to the myth, nobody
ever fit the bed exactly so Procrustes
always had plenty of work to do.
The application to relationships is not difficult.
Something within each one of us demands
conformity – more often than not,
we try to make others like ourselves. When
a child misbehaves or fails to meet parental
expectations, parents often ask, “Why can’t
you be like __________?” The obvious answer
is that the child is not ___________
and therefore should not be expected to be
like __________. Whenever we try to make
someone fit into a “norm” of our own making
we prove that there is something of Procrustes
in each one of us.
Effective bosses are able to adapt their
leadership style and even their expectations
to individuals. Each person is unique – in
temperament, giftedness, and motivation.
Students of psychology are familiar with
Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According
to Kohn and O’Connell, the motivation
of people on the job may vary based
on where they are in the hierarchy. People
just starting out may be primarily concerned
about feeling safe; emotionally and physically.
Once these basic needs are met people may
move to the next level; social needs. Once social
needs are met, people may be more concerned
about personal satisfaction and professional
advancement. People at this level
seek work that builds self-confidence, fosters
independence, and/or helps gain status and
recognition. The final level that a small number
may seek to achieve from their work is
self-actualization and self-fulfillment.
An understanding of these needs may
prove insightful in understanding why employees
act, think, or feel as they do.
Managers should also recognize the various
temperaments of their subordinates.
Task-oriented team members are fundamentally
concerned about getting things done.
They will tend to avoid or even resist unnecessary
meetings, or any process that impedes
speedy accomplishment of tasks. Process-oriented
individuals are concerned that
things are done correctly. In their worldview,
quality trumps speed. A third group of individuals
are concerned about relationships.
They value input from others, and desire social
bonding with others. A fourth group is
mostly concerned with being recognized or
appreciated by others.
Highly effective leaders know their own
temperament and the temperament of each
individual on their team, and are therefore
able to adjust their leadership style to fit the
individual and the situation. While a cookie
cutter approach to leadership may seem easiest
and most efficient, wise leaders recognize
that it is far better to flex with each person’s
uniqueness than to force everyone into the
same mould.
JOURNAL CAREERS
By Lisa Doerksen
For the Lethbridge Journal
It makes perfect sense that Emma Goerzen
has a staff she adores - her specialty is
recruiting the right person for any position.
As client services CEO of Hire Standard
Inc., Goerzen is able to use her peoplematching
skills to the advantage of both her
clients and herself.
“I love my team,” says the founder of the
recruiting firm. “They are the most professional
ladies. We work hard and we have
fun.”
Goerzen says her staff of four makes
her business - recruiting and background
screening for employers looking to fill positions
- that much more successful.
“You’re only as good as the people that
work for you,” she notes. “I like to hire talents
I don’t have, and (my staff) is build of
all different talents. We come together, in my
mind, as a powerhouse.”
Goerzen keeps that attitude towards staff
in mind when matching potential recruits to
“You can
train skills
but you can’t
change
personalities.”
her clients.
“Our expertise is in getting to know our
clients,” she says. “Once we get to know
them, we can fill any position.”
Goerzen takes time to learn a client’s values,
aspirations and expectations before
matching any potential employees.
“Certain people fit in certain places, certain
people don’t,” she says. “You can train
skills but you can’t change personalities.”
Goerzen started her company four years
ago as a background screening firm - doing
everything from checking references, verify-
Higher Standards
ing education and researching credit summaries
and criminal record checks for employers
looking at potential employees.
Business ownership was a dream of Goerzens,
but she didn’t pursue it right away.
“I always wanted to do my own business,
for at least 20 years,” she says. “But the thing
that stops us is fear. Then I had a life-changing
moment and the fear left me.”
Emma Goerzen of Hire Standard
After seven years spent working for another
screening firm, Goerzen was confident
she could provide exceptional services in the
same capacity.
“I loved what I did and I knew I was good
at it.”
She also thanks her four mentors for their
support and wisdom as she embarked on the
journey.
“They told me what I needed to hear,” she
says.
When the screening business took off, Goerzen
decided to branch into recruiting as
well, and says the two sides of the business
work well together. Clients automatically get
the benefit of the employee screening services
when they use Hire Standard Inc. to recruit,
or the background screening service is
available separately.
Goerzen says the service provides peace of
mind for her clients when they bring in a new
employee.
“It’s very cost-effective,” she says. “It helps
(clients) make a confident hiring decision.
“Lots of employees do referencing, but
they don’t do it like we do it.”
The business also keeps Goerzen on her
toes - which she loves.
“I love that every day is different,” she says.
“I love that every client is different and requires
different things and I love all the applicants
I meet and all their stories.”
Above all, she loves finding the perfect person
for a position.
“I love it when we’re able to find just the
right fit for the applicant and the employer.”
Goerzen says the business has grown faster
than she imagined, and she envisions continued
expansion in the future.
For that - and the experience of owning her
own business - Goerzen is thankful.
“I’m a workaholic and (owning the business)
gives me the freedom to take time off,”
she says. “I can give myself permission to do
things I wold never have done working for
someone else.
“This also lets me build a business based on
my values, and that’s very important to me.”
(NC)—Business owners seeking to hire
the best and brightest employees compete
to offer great work environments, opportunities
and benefits. But some small business
owners in Canada who would like to offer
pension and retirement savings plans to their
employees are challenged by the complexity
and costs of running such a program.
Already more than 50 per cent of Canadians
working in the private sector have some
sort of group retirement savings or investing
program. Increasing opportunities for the
balance requires some changes to Canada’s
retirement savings system, according to the
Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association.
“Business owners and operators recognize
the enormous value of helping their employees
save for their retirements, but many – particularly
small business -- are handcuffed by
tax and administrative regulations that make
running a program more expensive and time
consuming,” says Frank Swedlove, president
of the Canadians Life and Health Insurance
Association Inc. “We need to make regulatory
changes so that company pension plans
become less complex and costly to operate.
And we need to allow employers to band
together in multi-employer plans that pool
contributions and achieve efficiencies in cost
and operations.”
Changing the law that requires that group
pension programs only be offered by a single
employer to its employees is one way to help
employers. Doing so would allow for the creation
of multi-employer pension plans where
contributions are pooled and the administrative
burden to each individual employer is
reduced. Allowing for the creation of such
multi-employer pensions plans would also
let the self-employed participate in a pension
program.
Employers recognize that providing a
good company pension or group retirement
saving program helps retain existing employees.
Often they can improve the firms’ business
reputation and help attract capable new
employees. And, most importantly, they help
give employees peace of mind.
Initiatives are underway to review Canada’s
retirement savings programs. Capitalizing on
many employers’ desire to help employees
save, plus the efficiency of group programs,
will play a big role in ensuring a successful
system for future generations.
Page 30 - LETHBRIDGE JOURNAL - WEEK OF APRIL 22, 2010
By Bill Axtell
For The Lethbridge Journal
“Teenagers are fantastic, that’s all there
is to that; they’re full of enthusiasm, excitement
and creative thinking!” according to
Paige McGeorge, a librarian with Youth and
Adult Services of the Lethbridge Public Library.
Paige, who coordinates a special program
called the Teen Advisory Group (TAG),
meets with a group of volunteer teenagers
once a month to plan the teen programs provided
by the Library for the coming month
or two.
“We strive to treat teenagers with the same
respect and consideration as our adult patrons,”
Paige explained, adding that “these
young adults, ages 13 to 17 years, have access
to the same materials and services as adults.”
The events these teens plan are open to any
teenagers in the Lethbridge area who want to
come. The routinely send e-mails to schools,
to teens themselves, also posting the events
on the Library’s web site.
At the April meeting of the TAG team,
some 8 teens put forward their best ideas for
events they could hold in May, July and August
to come. The ideas included such “grabbers”
as Hide ‘N Seek, Anime, board games,
tag, water gun fights, paintball wars, various
movies and an event they call “gross food”.
The “gross food”, Paige explained, “is an extreme
food tasting challenge, consisting of
spicy foods, unusual foods and unexpected
ingredients thrown into a blender for sampling
by the bravest and most courageous
teens,” she said.
The teens come from area schools as well
as from home schooling programs. “One recent
month we played Rock Band and Guitar
Hero on our giant movie screen,” Paige remembered.
“It drew lots of interest and lots
of teens came.”
The teens themselves observed that anything
they do outdoors brings more people,
noting that 30 to 40 or more show up for a
video games day.
“Especially popular are the Library’s two
Wii games and Playstation 2.
“Every program night has a theme that
dictates what we do,” Paige continued. “But
sometimes we do random activities mixed
with the themed programs.”
Two of the teens in the Advisory Group,
Josh and Stuart, both of whom have been
coming for over 4 years, prefer board games
and movies. Kelsey likes watching movie
trailers where people guess the name of the
movie for candy rewards. James, Dax, Daylan
and Liberty, who have attended the group
for various time lengths ranging from two
meeting to up to a year and a half, all seemed
to equally enjoy the activities and events they
have helped to plan.
“We recognize that teenagers are not
adults, and have the right to programs and
materials that reflect and are relevant to their
own lives, such as:
*Teen programs for a range of ages and interests;
*The YA fiction and nonfiction collections
–books selected specifically for youth ages
thirteen to seventeen;
*The YSpace, an area that holds our YA
materials and is a meeting place for youth to
work on projects and to socialize with each
other;
*A YA Audiobook and Playaway collection,
as well as downloadable YA Audiobooks
and ebooks; and,
*The Teen Advisory Group.”
Paige said that “one of the most important
rules of the library programming and activities
for teens is let the teens take ownership
and be involved in the planning process,”
noting that “the most important rule is to
bring food!”
That’s why the TAG volunteers are significant
in the on-going teen programs provided
by the Library.
Jeff McLarty, the Library’s Community
Support Facilitator, in considering the numerous
programs for children, commented
that “persons willing to support the Library
said, “When you help us, you are potentially
In a joint fund-raising project with the
Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge, the Library is
HUMMEL
HUMMEL, GEORGE ALFRED
February 25, 1927 – April 12, 2010
Beloved husband of Alice, adored father, grandfather, great
grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away
peacefully at the age of 83 after a long illness.
George was born and raised in Champion, Alberta, where
he farmed from the age of 17 until retirement in his mid-70s.
He loved agriculture, aviation, big band music, southern
Alberta and Canada’s north country, but most of all loved his
family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice
(Anderson) of the Anderson Sisters Orchestra; six
children, Bernie (Janet) Hummel, Eleanor (Lyle) Smith, Ruth
Hummel, Grant (Wendy) Hummel, Grace (Gord) MacLeod,
and Joan (Jeff) Penwell; six grandchildren, Jerad (Kyla)
Smith, Warren (Jen) Smith, Connie Hummel, Lauren (Matt)
Ostridge, Colin MacLeod and Stuart MacLeod; and four
great grandchildren, Hannah, Garnett, Ainsley and Landon
George. He is also survived by siblings Dorothy Degenstein,
Racille (George) Ellis, and Ramon (Jean) Hummel.
George will be lovingly remembered for his sense of
humour, attempts to play the violin, coaching of Team
George in the Lethbridge Parkinson’s SuperWalk, and for
his countless hours of community service, especially for the
Village of Champion and as a charter member of the
Champion Lions Club. His philosophy was to work hard,
laugh often, and always help those less fortunate.
A private service for family was held to celebrate George’s
