A polled bull from Expert and Ru-Dev Caramia that we only flushed once in South Africa, so there 

won’t be any duplicates. This bull is a big strapping cherry red goggled eyed fellow who will make 

his mark in the Industry. 

His semen qualifies for sale to all parts of the World.

DNA: 

This Homozygous Expert Son out of the high selling NABRISKA cow showed a lot of muscle development 

and natural thickness at an early age. Finishing the bull test in the top 5% means that he not only 

kept up with a lot of powerful Horned bulls, but actually led the way in a lot of traits. Structurally 

sound with a big foot and more than ample testicular development. Clear sheathe and hooded eyes, 

together with great neck extension leaves nothing to be desired on this bull. His first calves will hit

Yes, he is Homozygous Polled but look at his numbers both the BIO measurements representing his 

numbers and the EPD’S representing his pedigree numbers. Starting with a low birth weight, excellent 

performance, and medium frame with fat cover where we want it, good rib eye, carcass values and 

scrotal measurements. Then throw in EPD’s for MWWT in the top 10% and milk in the top 4% of the 

breed and you have the complete package. Now look at the bull, great colouring, big goggles, good top 

and smooth overall with a great quarter. He is sired by Doralee’s Lucas FF 17U, Dora lee’s new junior

Here is what we wrote about him in the “2004 Spring Spectacular XXXII” Catalogue; 

The sire, Salerika Majoor, is a Evan sire line bull we found in SA, at the Salerika stud. This is his first 

calf crop and we will go back and use more! We first saw this bull in December of 2001 and he was 

impressive, he is a natural meat bull; so we bought him. 

Siska and the S cow family has been accepted the world over, topping shows and sales in SA and here 

in Canada and Brazil . 

Bar 5 SA Pfalzer 802M himself BIO tested on Sept. 26, 2003 the rib eye of 15.8, only 3 mm of backfat

WPDA - AYW divided by 365. 

Adj SC - Scrotal Circumfrance adjust to 12 months of age.

ii.) Weaning Weight Dam Ratio - The Cowboy’s Paycheck!! Low BW but 

extreme high WW - we still say the perfect cow weighs a 1000 lbs., 

but weans off a 1000 lbs. calf at 7 months (Act. Wt / Dam Wt). Our 

target is 65% / 1300 for 500% 

iii.) Y Frame score = 4.5 to 7.0, the Bar 5 desired range, YH - Yearling 

Height, MH - Mature Height 

iv.) Density - Aim for over 200 on the AYW/FS or Adjusted Density; using 

Actual Density of Height/Weight - 220 or 100 kgs. 

v.) Carcass Ultra Sound = Balanced Carcass Values; Rib eye - over 1 

inch per 100 lbs. 

- REA/CWT, high marbling % in the 3 or more range, & moderate BF 

of 4-10 mm. 

Actual Carcass Values: REA per 100 lbs.: REA/CWT - over 1.6mm 

Back Fat at 1300lbs. 

6/1300 * 100 = 0.46; Marbling - 4.8%. 4.6 to 4.8 – See 

vi.) SC - Testicle measurements = (cms) and min in 34 cms at a year. 

vii.) Yearling weights - Keep it 1250+ at one year, or a level for your 

desired carcass size, but remember as you break that 1550 lbs. 

barrier - keep your eye on that Density & Frame Score as carcass 

increase as well. 

Aim for these 6 targets and you will 

make Genetic Improvement!! 


Hip Height and Frame Score Determination 

The hip height measurement should be taken at a point 

directly over the bones (hooks) with the animal standing 

square on a level surface. 


3. Genetic Evaluation Tools - ABC’s, EPD’s + DNA 

A) Breed Association Genetic Evaluations 

within Breed EPD’s 

a) Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) 

Categories reported are CE, BW, WW, YW, MW, MILK, MCE, CW, REA, FAT, YG, 

MARB. Please refer to the CSA website www.simmental.com for the Glossary & 

descriptions. % Rk-Percentile Value from 1-95 is the score given as a percentage 

value for ease of comprehension for example a % 25 means the animals is in the 

top 25% while a % of 75 means the animal is in the bottom 25% of all the animals 

in the breed. 

EPD’s are expected progeny differences or deviances. They only predict future 

performance differences based on reported past differences. One record by its 

self is of no use, as it has no contemporary group to compare to and no difference 

to measure. Also 50 animals in the same group with all the same measurement 

are of no use and are edited out because there was no measured difference or 

deviation. 

It is easy to see that growth traits like BW, WW, and YW are always going to have 

differences, thus breeders only have to worry about your CG (contemporary group). 

And that the sires you have in that CG tie your herd data to the broad data base, and 

thus your data ties into the broad data set. Including a couple of AI sired progeny in 

the CG goes a long way in increasing the accuracy of your own sire’s data. 

b) Red Angus 

The system and information reflects data from imported individuals but not ET 

calves. Only animals with reported weaning weights are used in the analysis. The 

system has a large carcass & ultrasound data set. The RAAA reports & publishes 

percentile rankings of each animal’s EPD’s per published tables. 

Categories reported are BW, WW, YW, MILK, TM, ME, CED, HPG, CETM, ST, MARB, 

REA, and FAT. Please refer to the RAAA website www.redangus.org for more 

information. 

B) Genomics 

i) DNA Parentage Verification – PV. We believe in DNA verification for “Genetic 

Integrity” all our animals are DNA, we guarantee our pedigrees. The DNA case # is 

listed. PV indicates Parent Verification, not just DNA recording. 

ii) GeneStar -- QG - 2,2; Tend. - 2,2,2 (10) One of the most immediate uses for 

DNA marker (Genomic) testing is to provide genetic information on traits that have 

traditionally been difficult or expensive to obtain. The GeneStar panel of markers is 

the only marbling or quality grade test to have passed an independent validation by 

the National Beef Cattle Evaluation Consortium. 

GeneSTAR®Quality Grade (QG) is a DNA genetic marker panel test which 

identifies the presence of two major genes associated with Quality Grade and 

Marbling. Both gene markers in this panel have been found to be highly associated 

with quality grade in multiple evaluations across multiple breeds of cattle. 

GeneSTAR® Tenderness (Tend) is the first multi-marker single trait DNA test 

commercially available to the beef industry. It combines the results for two separate 

and independent markers for the same trait. The test is based on two naturally 

occurring genes involved in the post mortem tenderization process: Calpastatin 

and Calpain. 

iii) Igenity has developed more tests, and offers the Smart Tag Total Test, which 

includes PV, Marb, Tend, YG and other tests. 

C) GE BreedingTargets 

– Within Breed + Across Breeds – = Top 35% 

c) American Angus Association 

The AAA produces two National Cattle Evaluations annually, one mid summer 

and one in early winter. The EPD’s are produced by the AAA staff which includes 

several PhD’s and statistical experts. The AAA NCE includes only data from 100% 

Angus cattle registered with AAA. The database includes over ten million animals 

and 170,000 sires. The analysis generates a number of EPD’s expressed in dollar 

values. 

Data from ET calves is utilized if the calves are raised on cows registered with AAA. 

Ultrasound data on all ET calves is used in the analysis. The database includes over 

80,000 carcass records and over 500,000 ultrasound records. The AAA reports & 

publishes percentile rankings of each animal’s EPD’s per published tables. 

Categories reported are CED, BW, WW, YW, YH, SC, CEM, MILK, MW, MH, $EN, CW, 

Marb, RE, Fat, UIMF, URE, UFat, $W, $F, $G, $BCED, HPG, CETM, ST, MARB, REA, and
