As you are aware that under the Indo-Norwegian programme of ‘Institutional
Cooperation Programme’ a research project entitled ’Fish health studies under
rainbow trout farming in Himachal Pradesh’ is in operation between the department
of Fisheries, Government of Himachal Pradesh and National Veterinary Institute, Oslo,
Norway. Initiated during October 2002, the project has succeeded in achieving the major
targets viz. control of viral spread in state trout farms, visit and training of Norwegian and
Indian scientists, establishment of Pathological Laboratory in Kullu valley of Himachal
Pradesh etc. It goes to the credit of this prestigious project that trout production at the
farm has been revived and a stock of over 8 metric tonnes of healthy rainbow trout has
been made available for sale. Similarly, the other trout farming units setup in private
sector have also revived their farming activities.
Since one of the significant activities under the above said NORAD assisted project
relates holding of a workshop on trout health & hygiene as such a National workshop
entitled ‘TROUT FARMING IN INDIA- STATUS AND PROSPECTUS WITH
PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO HEALTH MANAGEMENT’ is being organized in
collaboration with Indian Council of Agriculture Research at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh
on 24 th & 25 th May, 2004. The main objective of this workshop is to highlight the
development made in this transfer technology project of trout farming under Norwegian
aided project. The other focal issues of discussion are extension of evolved technology
in order to ameliorate economic condition of hill inhabitants. The workshop is likely to be
participated by officials of Govt. of India, Director Fisheries of hill states, Scientists of
Indian Council of Agriculture Research Institutes, field programmes, trout growers and
state officials.

We are grateful to the Hon’ble Minister of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries Sh. Harsh Mahajan Ji for
inaugurating this workshop on ‘Trout farming in India- Status & prospects with particular reference to
health management’ As all of us know, fisheries especially trout farming is very dear to him and so is
he deeply concerned with the welfare of poor fishermen and their community, We look forward to
using his good office in implementing the ambitious trout promotion programme for enhancing the
status of mountainous fisheries. Sir, we are sure that you will be generous in providing requisite
support and financial muscles to this department.
This workshop being held in collaboration in Indian
Council of Agriculture Research acquires all the more
significance with the presence of Sh. S.S. Parmar,
Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Himachal
Pradesh. His presence indicates his concern for fisheries
and we feel assured of his support and help. Sir we
welcome you in this meet. Participation of our worthy
Secretary Ms. Bharti S Sihag & Additional Secretary Ms.
Madhu Sharma who were constant source of help and

inspiration in holding this workshop is also a sense of pride for us and we are thankful for their
presence.
We really feel honoured with the presence of Dr. P.L. Narayana, Chief, Monitoring Unit, NORAD in
this event. Dr. Narayana provided us all the support & encouragement and much needed finance. We
are thankful to him, as without his help it would have been never possible to conduct this workshop.
We have special words of thanks for fisheries luminaries in the name of Dr. S.N. Diwedi, Ex.
Additional Secretary (DOD) Dr. P.V. Dehadrai, former DDG ICAR, Dr. K.L. Sehgal, former Director
NRC & Coldwater and Dr. Y.R. Malhotra, Ex VC Jammu University who have graced the occasion.
We profoundly thank Dr. DPS Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner (Fisheries), government of India who
is really a link between state department & Government of India and it has always his endeavor to
help the state government. We are highly grateful to him. We also thank Dr. Y.S. Yadava, Member
Secretary Aquaculture Authority of India who have taken all the pain for participation in this workshop.
We also owe thanks to Dr. S.N. Ogale, Environmental Officer, Lonavala farm for taking all the pain for
coming from Maharashtra.
We am also thankful Director’s of national fisheries, Indian Council of Agriculture Research and their
scientists, participation of universities and representatives of the organizations viz. NABARD,
MPEDA, ZSI especially Dr. Dhanzee from Agriculture University, Palampur Dr. M.K. Jyoti from
Jammu University.
This workshop would have lost its meaning without that participation of state government as such we
are thankful to Director Fisheries J&K, Dr. N. Quarashi, Director Fisheries Uttranchal Sh. Chenyal,
and Director Haryana all the colleagues.
We have also deep words of thanks to Ms. Pernilla Simolin, Scientist, National Veterinary Institute,
Oslo, Norway. We value her concern and efforts in the revival of trout farming in the state.
We will be failing in our duty if we miss words of gratitude towards NIC and their dedicated team of
officers. The support received from NIC in the execution and publicity of this workshop is deeply
acknowledged by organizers.
And, then I bow with respect and admiration to the star-studded galaxy of participants in this
workshop. It is indeed overwhelming experience such an august company. But it would be difficult for
me to mention every one individually.

inauguration of the workshop.
