Communication and engagement
Employee feedback is actively encouraged at all levels of the
business, through informal listening groups, regular Business
Briefs, departmental lunches with the CEO and regional cascades
in the field.
Our licensees are encouraged to feed back via Partner forums
and the Punch Buying Club blog and there is a clear complaints
procedure which is set out in our Code of Practice.
We also bring licensees together at Partner hosted nights where
they can share best practice, in addition to our roadshows and
Spring Fairs, where they can meet industry experts, suppliers,
members of the Punch team and of course other Partners.
Partner training
We have a rigorous training programme for all new Partners,
following the Pre-Entry Awareness Training recommended by
the British Institute for Innkeeping for all entrants to the licensed
trade. Our Ready-for-Business programme begins with a one-week
foundation programme which covers licensing, responsible
retailing, how to run a profitable business, health and safety
and retail standards, which result in two qualifications, the
BIIAB Award in Beer and Cellar Quality and the BII Introduction
to Licensed Retailing Operations. To date, 99.5% of all new
starters have completed this course in line with our Code of
Practice. The second stage is a pub-based cellar training visit,
followed by a development planning visit, designed to ensure
the best possible start for the pub and the Partner. All this
training is then followed up by regular visits from our PDMs
to ensure learnings are applied on the ground in our pubs.
Business review
Developing our people
The restructure prompted by the demerger has provided a focus
and clarity to the strategy of the business moving forward.
A year of massive change for Punch has provided significant
opportunity for individual development and career progression
set against a background of extensive change management.
As part of our continued commitment to improving the skills
in our teams to help support our Partners, Punch piloted the
Multiple Retail Management Level 4 qualification, the first
BIIAB-accredited Level 4 qualification in Multiple Licensed
Premises Management.
And in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University,
Punch developed a Masters qualification in Multi-Unit Leadership,
for the potential future leaders of the business.
Punch is committed to developing the skills of the staff within the
business through a rigorous learning and development programme,
ensuring the highest possible quality standards.
And this commitment extends to recruiting the best talent the
industry has to offer, through a strong employer brand, a positive,
can-do culture and a flexible and competitive reward and
recognition programme.
