DAY 1 FLY TO PERU
Meet your group and board your fl ight to
Lima.
Arrive in Lima • Welcome to Lima, Peru’s
capital since 1535. Depending on your arrival
time, you may have free time to settle in and
explore the city on your own.
DAY 2 LIMA
Sightseeing tour of Lima • Behold vestiges
of Lima’s rich colonial heritage on a guided
tour of the city. See the Government Palace,
the offi cial residence of Peru’s President,
before exploring the city’s bustling main
square. Here you’ll see such architectural
marvels as the Archbishop’s Palace, City
Hall and the Cathedral. Then, explore the
famed Monastery of San Francisco, which
houses a museum of fi ne religious art as well
as catacombs fi rst dug in the 16th century.
National Museum of Archaeology and
Anthropology • A guided tour introduces
you to this fabulous showcase of Peru’s pre-
Spanish native cultures. See the Raimondi
Stone Slab and the Tello Obelisk, along
with other outstanding examples of art and
archaeological artifacts.
Miraflores • Later, explore the “Heroic
City” and its popular shopping areas, lavish
gardens and breathtaking views of the
Pacifi c.
DAY 3 CUZCO
Flight to Cuzco • Depart for Cuzco, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former
seat of the Incan Empire.
Sightseeing tour of Cuzco • After
adjusting to the altitude, take a guided
tour of Cuzco, which in Quechua means
“navel of the earth.” Start with a trip to the
remains of the Korikancha Temple, once
the most important temple in the Incan
Empire, and the still-impressive Cuzco
Cathedral that Spanish colonists built in
its place. Afterwards, admire Cuzco from
above as you explore the hillside complex of
Sacsayhuamán, and visit the extraordinary
ruins at Kenko, Puca-Pucara and
Tambomachay.
DAY 4 MACHU PICCHU
Machu Picchu • Machu Picchu, the fabled
“Lost City of the Inca,” was brought into
the international spotlight in 1911 by Yale
lecturer Hiram Bingham. A century later, this
UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the
New Seven Wonders of the World continues
to take the breath away from all who visit
it. You’ll head for the site and ascend its
mountainous pedestal by train for a guided
tour. Archaeologists have yet to determine
why the city was abandoned so many years
ago. You’ll see remnants of temples and
terraces that have yet to reveal the true
purpose of Machu Picchu.
DAY 5 PISAC • OLLANTAYTAMBO
• CUZCO
Travel to Ollantaytambo • This morning,
take a scenic train ride to this former Incan
stronghold.
Písac • Browse local goods among Incan
ruins at nearby Písac’s famous market.
Sightseeing tour of Sacred Valley of the
Incas • Afterwards, discover the heartland
of an empire that spanned from Colombia
to Chile, starting with Ollantaytambo, once
the personal estate of the Incan Emperor
Pachacuti. A guided tour will provide insight
into the rich history of the site and its array of
infrastructural feats. Later, return to Cuzco.
DAY 6 CUZCO
Free morning in Cuzco • This morning,
enjoy free time to catch up on coursework,
explore on your own or simply relax.
Orphanage visit • Later, visit a local
orphanage with your group.
DAY 7 CUZCO
Optional: Maras and Moray • Opt to visit
two of the region’s more unique sites. First,
take in the sloping salt ponds of Maras,
in use since Incan times. Then, behold the
mysterious system of depressions at Moray
that may have been an Incan agricultural
experiment facility.
Free afternoon in Cuzco • The afternoon is
yours to take Cuzco at your own pace.
DAYS 8-9 CUZCO • LIMA •
DEPART FOR HOME
Travel to Lima • Your tour director assists
with the transfer to the airport, where you’ll
board your fl ight to Lima.
Flight home • Connect to your return fl ight
home, arriving on Day 9.
2-DAY TOUR EXTENSION
DAYS 8-9 PUERTO MALDONADO •
AMAZON LODGE
Travel to Puerto Maldonado • Board your
fl ight to Puerto Maldonado, the capital of the
Madre de Dios region. Located in the Amazon
Rainforest at the confl uence of the Tambopata
and Madre de Dios rivers, the small frontier
town was founded more than 100 years ago
during a latex rubber boom.
Travel to an area lodge • Transfer by boat to
an area lodge, a camp-style accommodation
that provides unparalleled access to Peru’s
incredible biodiversity (please note that the
lodge does not have electricity).
Experiential learning* • Following a briefi ng
on the lodge, attend ecotourism lectures
and explore the biological and geographical
diversity of the region. Take in the nature
that surrounds you by enjoying a boat ride,
birdwatching or taking a leisurely guided walk
through the rainforest.
DAY 10 LIMA • DEPART FOR HOME
Travel to Lima • Your tour director assists
with the transfer to the airport, where you’ll
board your fl ight to Lima.
Flight home • Connect to your overnight
fl ight home.
DAY 11 ARRIVE HOME
Transfer to the airport and check in for your
return fl ight home.
