It was the first day of school.
Juan was starting second grade.
He was seven.
“I can wait for the bus by
myself this year!” thought Juan.
2

He saw his best friend Brooke at
the bus stop.
Juan and Brooke got on the bus
when it drove up.
3

The bus drove down the street.
Juan saw that Brooke looked sad.
“What’s wrong” Juan asked.
“What if second grade is too
hard” Brooke said. “What if we
hate it I’ve never even met our
teacher, Ms. Willows.”
4

“I just hope she won’t give us a
lot of homework,” Juan said.
“Hey,” said someone behind them.
Juan and Brooke turned around.
“My name is Jeff,” said the boy.
“I can tell you about Ms. Willows.”
“Oh, please do!” Brooke said
“Is she nice”
5

“She’s my favorite!” Jeff said.
“Is second grade hard”
Juan asked.
“Kids say it can be,” said Jeff.
“But Ms. Willows will explain
everything.”
6

“What else do you know about
second grade” Brooke asked.
“Well, I don’t know that much
more,” Jeff said.
“What” said Brooke. “But weren’t
you in second grade last year”
7

“No! I haven’t started second
grade yet either,” Jeff told her. “I
was in first grade last year. My
family lived in a different city.”
“So how do you know about
Ms. Willows then” asked Juan.
“She’s my mom!” said Jeff.
8

He told them that his mother was
nice. “The kids all buy her cards
to thank her for being a great
teacher,” said Jeff. “She wants
the class to work hard. But they
have fun, too.”
9

Brooke began to smile.
They got to school and walked
into their classroom.
Ms. Willows had set up a party
for the first day.
Brooke laughed and said, “I’m
ready for second grade!”
