NOTE
Check when cold
When fitting new guide rings and piston rings the cylinder bore must be roughened to
enable the new rings to ‘bed in’. Use 200 grit emery cloth to impart a 45 o crosshatch
type finish to the swept area of the cylinder bore.
Wash out all traces of abrasive material with a suitable solvent.
NOTE
Failure to roughen the cylinder bore will cause premature wear of the piston and guide rings due
to excessive cylinder bore temperatures.
Re-assembly:
Re-assemble in the reverse order to the procedure in 9.9.3.2.
The torque settings are:
9.9.5 Pressure Packing Unit
Description:
The piston rods run in oil free self compensating high pressure packing which
effectively seal the gas end from the oil lubricated crankcase assembly, and
additionally dissipate excess heat from friction and compression pressure. The
packings are internally water cooled for optimum efficiency.
Disassembly:
1. Loosen and remove nuts from tie-studs.
2. Withdraw case and containers. As containers are removed the packing rings will
be exposed. Ensure each set of segments and rings are kept together as a set as they
must be re-assembles in the same position as they came out.
3. Separate packing ring segments by removing garter springs.
Maintenance:
1. Apart from occasional cleaning very little maintenance is required except for
replacement when the packing rings have worn till their ends butt. At the same time the
rubber sealing rings must also be replaced. Check them for brittleness, which make
them useless as fluid seals.
2. Particular attention should be paid to sealing ring grooves, which must be clean,
the container faces must be gas and fluid tight, scores and indentations must be
