Victoria’s Oldest General Independent Bookshop
News
Robinsons Bookshop was proud to be part of the Government funded
“Get Reading” Campaign in September. We sold lots of the ‘50 Books
You Can’t Put Down’, so we hope the initiative worked and a lot of people
were reading during the month.
October is going to be a transformative month for Robinsons. Towards
the end of the month we will be offering e-books for sale via our website.
Robinson’s has been working in conjunction with the book industry to
bring an e-book offer to our customers. An innovative company called
‘readcloud’ is making e-books a reality for independent bookshops like
Robinsons who already have webstores in place.
We see this as a genuine innovation in our offer to our customers and we
wish to show that we intend to keep supporting our customers’ needs in
terms of reading material - in whatever form they choose to read it. We
want to be here for our community in 50 years time - and this is an important
step for our future sustainability.
During late October we will be trialling the integration of our site with readcloud
and plan to have a complete platform in place by early November.
We are planning some ‘petting zoo sessions’ where you can bring your
digital devices in to Robinsons and we can teach you how to download
our e-books. We are also hoping to be selling e-readers by November,
but are still assessing the best option for our customers. We ask for a
little patience from our customers wanting to jump on-board straight away
as this is a complex process that has been in development for the past
two years and we need to get this last stage right.
Please also note we have two exciting events coming up. Kaz Cooke
is conducting a talk for us on her new book “Women’s Stuff” this month.
It is sure to be an excellent girls’ night! We are also very excited that
Nicholas Sparks has agreed to come to Frankston. We are selling tickets
to a session with Nicholas in early November, followed by a screening
of The Notebook. Tickets include a book which can be collected before
the event. So don’t buy your book anywhere else if you want to meet the
amazing Nicholas Sparks.
And for now GOOD READING!
OCTOBER BOOK OF THE MONTH
AUTUMN LAING
Alex Miller
Autumn Laing seduces Pat Donlon with her pearly
thighs and her lust for life and art. In doing so she not
only compromises the trusting love she has with her
husband, Arthur, she also steals the future from Pat’s
young and beautiful wife, Edith, and their unborn child.
Fifty-three years later, cantankerous, engaging,
unrestrainable 85-year-old Autumn is shocked to find
within herself a powerful need for redemption. As
she begins to tell her story, she writes, ‘They are all dead and I am old and
skeleton-gaunt. This is where it began...’
Written with compassion and intelligence, this energetic, funny and wise
novel peels back the layers of storytelling and asks what truth has to do
with it. Autumn Laing is an unflinchingly intimate portrait of a woman and
her time - she is unforgettable.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alex Miller is twice winner of
Australia’s premier literary prize, The
Miles Franklin Literary Award, first
in 1993 for The Ancestor Game and
again in 2003 for Journey to the Stone
Country. He is also an overall winner
of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize,
in 1993 for The Ancestor Game. His
fifth novel, Conditions of Faith, won the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction in
the 2001 New South Wales Premier’s Awards. In 2011 he won this award
a second time with his most recent novel Lovesong. Lovesong also won
the People’s Choice Award in the NSW Premier’s Awards, the Age Book
of the Year Award and the Age Fiction Prize for 2011. In 2007 Landscape
of Farewell was published to wide critical acclaim and in 2008 won the
Chinese Annual Foreign Novels 21st Century Award for Best Novel and the
Manning Clark Medal for an outstanding contribution to Australian cultural
life. It was also short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award, the Christina Stead
Prize for Fiction, the ALS Gold Medal and the Commonwealth Writers’
Prize. Alex is published internationally and widely in translation. Autumn
Laing is his tenth novel.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN
Lionel Shriver
I can’t tell you how many times I looked at this book
and thought “I should read this.” It wasn’t until I heard
of the impending movie (Due in cinemas November
10th) that I finally thought right! I have to read this
book! So I did. The first thing that got me was the
format the book is written in – entirely in letters from
Eva (the mother of Kevin), to her estranged husband Franklyn. Within
the first few pages the basics of the plot are established. Kevin is in
a prison for juvenile offenders – he has murdered seven of his classmates,
a teacher and a cafeteria worker. The reader gets a very real,
very personal insight into the character of Eva, her reluctance to have a
child and her struggle to bond with Kevin. This book brings up the often
heated debate over whether it is nature or nurture that has the greater
influence on people. Right from the start, Kevin is different – cunning,
calculated and often manipulative. As a reader I found his character
haunted me. When I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about it,
talking about it, and desperately wanting to continue reading it. This is a
book that grabs the reader and won’t let go, until its shocking, horrifying
conclusion – which left me completely shocked. When I finished this
book, I had to stay sitting for just a few minutes to let the magnitude
of what I’d just read sink in. It is written in such a beautiful, believable
fashion that it feels like a biography – the characters were so incredibly
real. “We Need To Talk About Kevin” is an exquisitely written journey,
one of those rare books that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
AUTUMN LAING
Alex Miller
“Lovesong” was a good book and this one is possibly
better. Reads like poetry at times, an epic love story
at others.
The thrust of the novel is an old lady in her dotage
hankering for redemption for a few of the decisions
made selfishly in her younger years.
Decisions that impacted hugely on those she held dearest.
She feels if she writes a truthful account of her history she can’t fail to
make amends. She is cantankerous and witty and I thoroughly enjoyed
sharing her reflections.
As a younger woman Autumn Laing jeopardizes the love of a wonderful
man to seduce the younger, tempestuous, married artist Pat Donlan.
Their relationship is fraught but she is smitten. Her artist friends warn
her but she readily makes a fool of herself for him.
Ultimately it is a tragedy for her but she does find closure in her final
days.
DOWNTON ABBEY DVD
As a longtime lover of period drama, I couldn’t resist
the pull of Downton Abbey. I watched it as it aired on
TV and then sat down and deliciously devoured the
series on DVD. The show is centered around the family
that lives at Downton Abbey and the wealth of servants
that support it. It demonstrates the distinct class
structure that existed in England at the time and I find it fascinating how
it all worked and also astounding that it was not that long ago. However,
it also deals with a lot of the changes that society was going through at
the time like women’s rights to vote and antiquated laws around passing
on of titles and property and how society and the characters dealt with
these changes.
Life within the walls of Downton goes on with the Crawleys upstairs and
their staff below facing their own dramas. In service, it’s young maid
Gwen (Rose Leslie) under fire when it’s discovered she has something
in her possession no woman of good character should own - a
typewriter! ‘’I want to be a secretary!’’ she says to the horror of all. The
daughter of a milkmaid dreaming of bettering herself Unthinkable!
Reviews
THE SENSE OF AN ENDING
Julian Barnes
Julian Barnes is such an established and uncontroversial
fixture on the UK literary scene that he’s often overshadowed
by his more high-profile contemporaries like Martin
Amis and Ian McEwan. While Amis and McEwan often feel
like they’re treading water, struggling perhaps to live up to
their huge reputations, Barnes can quietly produce a little
masterpiece like “The Sense of an Ending”. It is a novel of only 150 pages,
and is often about seemingly inconsequential events, yet the examination of
memory and time is extraordinary, and the narrative gains a cumulative power
that you barely notice building until the end. Ostensively the book is about
the narrator, Tony Webster, who tells us his life story and then goes back to
examine a specific time in his youth when his life, and those of his friends,
changed dramatically. We’re not quite sure what happened, and neither is
the narrator, who grapples with the way that memories can be imperfect, how
much we can forgot, and also how much we can choose to forget. Barnes is
great at making the reader drop his guard, often using humour, and then casually
dropping in a reference that makes you re-examine everything you’ve
read. You never feel on firm ground, and as the story develops an imperceptible
feeling of dread builds with each new subtle revelation. As a Pom I also
loved the critique of modern Britain, with the gentrified pubs, moronic popular
culture, and the general self-obsession of everybody. The novel is terrific at
showing how we seem to have lost just as many good things as bad things
between the Sixties and now, and there doesn’t seem like much hope of
getting any of them back. This is the fourth book by Barnes to be shortlisted
for the Booker Prize and I hope it’s his year - fiction simply doesn’t get much
better than this.
POWER OF SIX
Pittacus Lore
I have been waiting for The Power of Six to be released
for months. I devoured I Am Number Four in hours and the
sequel didn’t let me down. It follows John Smith (Number
Four), Six (Number Six) and Sam (John’s best friend from
his latest school) on their relentless mission to survive.
They are continually being hunted by the Mogadorians who
killed all of John and Six’s people, excluding a select few who travelled to
earth; the powerful Nine.
The book slips between John, Six and Sam, and introduces Marina, number
seven, living in a convent in Spain, desperate to escape to join with the
others to fight for her planet. In the sequel more questions are answered
and even more are created as five and eight are still out there, and they are
unaware that the protection over the nine has been broken. The Power of Six
is a page turner that will have you guessing what could go wrong next and
how will they save themselves this time.
WONDERSTUCK
Brian Selznick
I was so excited to hear that Brain Selznick (author if ‘The
Invention of Hugo Cabret’) had a new book coming out.
While I’ve only just started reading it, I’ve decided to make
it my review for this month as it is already quite amazing!!
Using his usual style of mixing text with black and white
illustrations, ‘Wonderstruck’ follows the life of two kids. One is Ben who is
followed with words and the other is Rose who is followed through pictures.
Both storylines are set 50 years apart and, while they seem very separate
from each other, come together and follow each other with remarkable precision.
Like I mentioned earlier, I have only just started this book, but I already can’t
wait to see how it ends!!
Introducing Flipbacks
The Netherlands has given us a lot of things, from edam cheese, clogs and
windmills, as well as some of the best artists in the world, but back in 2009
at Manuscripta - a book and literary exhibition - Dutch Christian publishing
house, Jongbloed, introduced the Flipback book. The Dutch refer to it as the
'Dwarsligger', now a registered trademark to describe a convenient pocket
book that fits in your shirt or jean pocket or in your purse. It is made from
the same wafer-thin paper used for bibles and will stay open on it's pages
without the need of both hands to hold it open. Great for Commuters!

Lee Child
$34.95
March 1997. A
woman has her
throat cut behind a
bar in Carter Crossing,
Mississippi. Just
down the road is a big army base. Is the
murderer a local guy - or is he a soldier
Jack Reacher, still a major in the military
police, is sent in undercover. The county
sheriff is a former U.S. Marine - and a
stunningly beautiful woman. Her investigation
is going nowhere. Is the Pentagon
stonewalling her Or doesn’t she really
want to find the killer
