LDA louisiana dental hygienists’ assoc. Tammie Nelson, R.D.H., B.S. President, LDHA Opportunities for Growth recently attended a professional leadership weekend I “Unleashing Your Potential” hosted by the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) in Chicago, IL. ADHA holds this meeting annually in an effort to empower, develop and support dental hygienists towards realizing their potential as leaders within the profession. In one of the sessions, Past President Marge Green made a comment that spurred reflection. She stated, “Don’t let your plans get in the way of opportunity.” We all make plans. We have a plan of how we think our lives should go, what we think we should be doing at any given moment in our life. Those plans change throughout our lives, but sometimes we get so focused on what “the plan” is that we miss an opportunity. Often it is not an opportunity that we thought we were looking for, but one that could surely improve our life satisfaction in a number of areas. As 2011 ended and another year began, many of us look at the failures and successes of the past year and ask ourselves, “What can I do differently this year to make my life better” We can apply this to all aspects of our lives - how can we be a better mother/ father, wife/husband, sister/brother, friend, boss, employee, clinician, health care provider. Certainly as health care providers, we strive to better ourselves. In turn, these efforts improve the community in which we work. One of the most recognized ways of improvement includes continuing education. Whether it is learning about communication skills, the latest technology, or a review course on oral pathology, these are ways to increase our knowledge base and clinical practice. When continuing education becomes more than meeting our legislated quota, we see more opportunities and fit them into our life plan.
