Principal’s Report
Here we are over half way through our second term already
and moving towards the final report writing period and senior
exams in the next few weeks. I hope parents have taken the
opportunity to view student Progress Reports that were published last
week and have discussed their child’s progress with them. We now
are in the final quarter of Semester 1 units and final assessments for
each of these units. I would like to reinforce the commitment of the
College to work in partnership with parents to support all students’
progress. If as a parent you have a concern about your child’s
progress please take the time via phone or email to contact us and
discuss any concerns.
NAPLAN
All Year 7 students and Year 9 students completed NAPLAN testing
last week over three days in literacy and numeracy. I was impressed
by the efforts the Years 7 and 9 students put into these assessments
as well as their excellent behaviour through each test. The results are
normally published in August. These will be sent home to parents via
the College. The results also give the College valuable information
about individual student learning and progress.
Thank You and
Well Done
If members of our school community know excellent performances of
Drouin Secondary College students please send us this information so I
can acknowledge this in our College E-News.
Congratulations to:
• The VCAL students for their effort in supporting the Salvos and on
their recent participation in Melbourne’s Amazing Race. There is
some impressive work going on in this senior program.
• Shaun Griffin represented Australia in the World Floorball
Championships held in Germany earlier in May.
• Georgia Fisher has been selected in the Girls SSV Under 16
Victorian AFL team to play an interstate carnival in Darwin later in
the year.
• Jessica Monk has been continuing her rehearsals for the State
School Spectacular later in the year. She also performed at the
Education Excellence Awards last weekend. (There was a great
article in “The Gazette” this week).
• Well done and thank you to the College production team in their
ongoing rehearsals each week and their extra rehearsal all day
last Sunday. I look forward to seeing “Little Shop of Horrors” in
Term 3.
• Dandenong Train Station Master Mr Jude Matthews would like
to congratulate DSC student Alex Ionascu for the support and
reassurance he gave the two year 7 students that needed help.
What have the boys in 8 Hands
on Learning been doing this term
What a term we have been having in the
8HOL program. We started the term
with our camp to Baw Baw National Park
and Thomson River – practising all the skills
we had learnt in Term 1. The planning and
organisation was difficult, but very important
considering we were bringing all our own
food pre-packed for hiking and clothing
required for the week.
We started our journey from Mt Erica car
park and walked part of the Alpine trail to
O’Shea’s Mill – all the boys walked really
well and pushed themselves mentally and
physically to complete the distance with full
backpacks. The next day was a cold start,
but opened to blue skies and sunshine. The
scenery along the Thomson River, walking
Fingerboard Spur, was stunning and the boys
really appreciated it too. We had a long day
walking to Coopers Creek, but again the
boys rallied as a team and all completed the
walk well.
Unfortunately the next day brought rain in
the late morning, but with rafting skills as
the activity, we were wet anyway. Thursday
was a real test of resilience as we all put on
our wet, cold wetsuits and sneakers in the 5
degree morning fog to start our journey to
Brunton’s Bridge. The boys struggled at first,
but soon realised we had a journey to take
and we were on the water by 10.00am.
The skies were again blue and when the
sun reached through the gorge walls it was
beautiful. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the
sports rafting, although the skills required
were quite technical and teamwork with your
3
partners was paramount. A few pairs tipped,
but everyone was in good spirits by the end
and feeling as though they had accomplished
a lot. There was a great deal to celebrate
around the camp fire that evening. A special
thanks to Andrea Francis, Brian Griffin, Ebony
Axford and the Nayook team on running a
great camp.
After a very successful camp with many goals
reached, we have settled into college life
again. We have had Iron Clay run a session,
started our own Leo’s Club (part of the Lion’s
Club in Drouin), and Daniel from the Navy
gave an inspirational talk about life in the
Defence Force. Let’s see what the rest of the
term has to offer.
Courtney Wingrove
in Year 7 wins an
Apple iPad Mini!
Thanks to a competition run recently by SchoolPix
Photos, Courtney Wingrove ,7E, won herself a brand
new Apple iPad Mini. This was presented to her at
the latest Year 7 Level Assembly on Monday, 29th
April 2013, by Mr Brendan Murnane of SchoolPix.
Courtney was automatically entered into the draw
for the iPad Mini by selecting and purchasing her
school photos from SchoolPix. Her excited parents
and little sister were invited to the assembly to witness
the presentation, although Courtney was unaware of
their presence until the conclusion of the award. All of
the Year 7 students and the Learning Group teachers
were very excited about Courtney’s big win!
Well done Courtney!
Alpacas
Our school, and specifically the Agriculture classes, have
increased their stock numbers recently with the addition of
two alpacas (Joey and Sarum), four calves (Thabo, Samson,
Fergus and Pokey) and numerous different coloured layer chicks.
The Alpacas were kindly donated to us by Louise Lazarus of Hillend
who has also been volunteering her time to teach the Year 10
Agriculture class about alpacas and how to show them. The Year 10
and 11 classes have been training and caring for the alpacas to try to
make them as quiet as possible around people.
Three Year 10s went on an Alpaca Camp in the holidays to learn
all things alpaca, taking our school ones with them. These activities
culminated in an Alpaca Show that was attended by Meg Williams,
Jess Walker and Katelyn Bjorksten. The girls competed in the Senior
Showmanship class which involved parading the alpacas, answering
questions and showing the judge their fleece & teeth. There was
also a Stockmanship class which involved taking the alpacas around
an obstacle course that included gates, tyres, bridges and different,
unfamiliar surfaces. This showed the trust between the handler and
alpaca. Katelyn (with Eddy) won first prize for both competitions and
Senior Champion, while Meg (with Joey) and Jess (with White Lily)
came second and third respectively. This was a great achievement for
these girls and for the school. Well done.
Year 7 2014 Information
Day – a fabulous success
for the College
On Wednesday 1st May, we welcomed approximately
175 Grade Six students and accompanying teachers
from our local primary schools to Drouin Secondary
College for their Year 7 2014 Information Day Program.
The students and visiting staff enjoyed presentations by Mr
Wainwright, Mrs Allen, our College Captains and various
staff in the Auditorium before embarking on a college tour
which was conducted by current Year 7 students. The
students then experienced a range of subjects including
Science, Drama, Music, Moondah, LOTE, English and Art.
After lunch, the students spent a session either in the gym
playing a variety of sports, or some chose to have a swim in
our pool, even though the day was extremely cold and wet.
That same evening, we offered the Year 7 2014
Information Evening Program which was specifically
targeted at parents and families. This event was well
attended with approximately 120 visitors to the college
and included presentations, tours and information sessions
from faculty staff. The evening concluded with a fabulous
supper which was provided by our Parents and Friends
Committee in the Stadium.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the
people involved in making this event such a success. We
had over 45 staff involved in either running a student
session during the day or presenting an evening session
for the parents, as well as 40 Year 7 students who spent
the day with the primary school students. Special thanks
especially to the Canteen staff, the P&F Committee and
Maureen Hickman for all their assistance.
Cyber Safety
On Thursday, 9th May students in Years 7-10 saw
the production Cyberia, a performance by Brainstorm
Productions about cyber safety. It followed the issues
of two siblings who each misused social media and
discovered the consequences. After the 50 minute show,
performed in the stadium, students had the opportunity
to ask questions of the two actors about the themes and
issues in the story and the performance itself.
Students viewed the performance and themes positively.
We know these issues are continually confronting young
people in modern society and as a college we continue
to discourage bullying and encourage responsible use of
social media. Brainstorm Productions is the company who
visited Drouin Secondary College last year to perform the
show Verbal Combat about bullying.
Year 11 VCAL 1000 Steps
On Thursday, 18th April, Year 11 VCAL students were fortunate enough
to have the chance to walk the Kokoda Memorial 1000 Steps track. The
track is a tribute to the fallen that served for our country in World War II.
Even though the weather was horrible, over 80% of the students pushed
on and reached the top of the 1000 Steps. Everyone had an enjoyable
day and learnt something new.
DSC VCAL STUDENTS
Support the Homeless
As a part of the Drouin Secondary College VCAL program the
Senior Literacy students have been studying homelessness and
implementing ways to support this huge issue in Australia.
To begin the unit of homelessness, the Year 12 VCAL classes
watched the ‘Oasis’ documentary filmed in Sydney, and witnessed
the lives that many homeless people are experiencing today. After
watching the film, full of true stories and real people, the senior
students were more determined than ever to learn more about
homelessness and devised ways they could help as an individual
and a whole community. Throughout the 12 weeks of studying
homelessness the main tasks the students had to successfully complete
in order to receive a Unit 1 pass were to present an informative
documentary and pamphlet to show to the Years 7 & 8 classes within
the college. The documentaries included statistics, images, and ways
to prevent homelessness, factors contributing to homelessness, what
homeless and houseless is and how homelessness in Australia is so
invisible to society.
Although the students of senior VCAL Literacy finalised and presented
a 10 minute documentary and an informative pamphlet, they felt their
contribution towards raising awareness and helping those in need
was not complete.
In order to raise awareness and help the homeless, the Senior
Literacy students decided the best way to inform the students of
Drouin Secondary College was to hold a casual clothes day, where
every student from the school was asked to bring a household
product or an essential item of need. This casual clothes event was
held on Tuesday, 14th May with the senior VCAL classes spending
their morning collecting products that the DSC students donated and
also monetary donations. Cans of food, toiletries, clothes, snacks,
packets of pasta and rice and much more created an enormous pile
of donations which were then sorted and packed.
To finalise this project the two VCAL classes embarked on a journey to
the Salvation Army in Melbourne on Monday, 20th May to deliver a
carload and trailer full of donations. As a result of this free dress day
there were 1500 items donated, all taken to the Salvation Army Project
614, where the students also participated in an education program
and learnt more about the homeless. The people at Project 614 were
overwhelmed with the donations and actions of these young Year 12
students. The monetary donations, a total of $213.50, were donated
to the Salvation Army in Warragul, supporting those in need.
As a reflection of the whole project, the greatest thing the students
found was that homelessness can happen to anyone and that with a
little hard work we can really make a difference in the lives of others
who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Snail Farm
Tour
On Monday 29th April, the Years 9 and 10 French classes
travelled to Café Escargot in Mirboo North for a snail farm
tour and tasting. Students learned how snails are farmed,
cleaned and prepared for cooking before participating in a snail
tasting and having lunch. It was a fun and informative day.
“The best bit of the excursion in my opinion was when we actually
tried the snails and finding out how they taste.” Beck
“I think the point of the excursion to Cafe Escargot was that we could
eat snails and experience something new. It was a part of French
culture that we could experience here in Victoria. The best part of
the excursion was eating the snail and that it didn't taste at all like I
imagined it would. I thought it would be disgusting and make me want
to spew, but it didn't, so that's a bonus. It was also really good how
the majority of people actually did try one.” Aimee
“I think most of the kids that went on this excursion were really surprised
after they ate the snails, as they tasted better than we had expected.
Eating the snails was really enjoyable.” Meg
“The best bit of the excursion is when we got to eat the food and
collect chestnuts. The worst part of the trip was waiting for the bus to
arrive. The tour of Cafe Escargot was good because we got to see
live snails and the chestnuts were free.” Matt B
“The best bit was eating the actual snails because it was the most
entertaining - seeing all the people eat them and watching their
reactions. I think that the worst bit was actually putting the snail in your
mouth and feeling the texture and experiencing the first taste of a snail
in your life.” Rachel
“It was a very good experience and I liked how it wasn’t all go go go
that we could play and collect chestnuts.” Matt L
“This was such a fun little excursion. I think the reason you took us on
it was because snails are a French delicacy and I don’t think any of us
had tried them before. It’s not something I probably would have ever
done if I hadn’t have gone with the school.
I loved the part when we all sat down with four snails in the middle
of the table. It was kind of scary for me at first because it looked so
gross. I ‘people watched’ everyone else until I was the last one. I’m so
glad I did it, otherwise I would have regretted it later on.” Steph G
“The point of this excursion was to have the experience of eating snails
and getting the chance to say “I have eaten a snail”. The best part
of the excursion was the eating of the snails and meatballs, also the
throwing of the ball (markers up). The bus trip was very long but the
view was awesome. I really enjoyed this trip - one of the best I have
been on. The chestnut hunting was good but I would have liked to
spend a little more time in the snail raising home.” Elliot
“The lunch tasted really good and the chestnut hunting was fun.” Sam
STUDENT LEADERSHIP SYNERGY
There was a buzz in the room; an atmosphere of quite excitement.
Groups of students were standing in circles chatting and eating
breakfast.
This occasion was the first Synergy Leadership Breakfast for 2013.
Drouin’s College Captains joined student leaders from Warragul
Regional College, Trafalgar High School, Neerim & District Secondary
College, St Paul’s Anglican Grammar, Marist Sion Catholic College
and Chairo Christian School who generously hosted the event,
providing a delicious breakfast and warm hospitality.
Students from each school spoke about their goals as leaders and the
challenges they faced in their roles. It was very interesting to hear the
different approaches each team were taking and the various ways
they were working within their schools.
Drouin Secondary College Captains, Kylie DiCarlo, Nick Derrick and
Harry Hearn, spoke about their work with the SRC, their leadership of
Assemblies and the Environmental Team. As the speakers presented it
was obvious they have much in common in their experiences.
The guest speaker was a young man who had been in a similar role
in Year 12 last year. His message was that one major challenge for
student leaders is keeping a balance between study and leadership
while still enjoying their interests and passions.
We look forward to the next Synergy Breakfast which will be hosted
by the Baw Baw Shire in August.
Market &
MCG Tour
Year 9s headed to the city on Wednesday,
1st May. First stop was the South Melbourne
Market where students were given an
introduction to the history and sustainability
practices of the market and a show bag!
Students explored the market, trying new
foods and ensuring they had a dim sim (or
two)! Students then went to the MCG to
explore the grounds, walk on the hallowed
turf, be given a rev up in the footy rooms
and tour the sports museum. Some Year 9s
also participated in the interactive games
in the museum, testing their skills against the
best in football, netball, cricket and athletics.
