NEWS AND NOTES<br />

Wander-TAI Oration : Dr. R. Prabha-,<br />

kar, Director, <strong>Tuberculosis</strong> Research Centre<br />

Madras, has been selected by the TB Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> India for the Wander-TAI Oration<br />

award for the year 1986. The Oration will be<br />

delivered at the 41st National Conference on<br />

TB and Chest <strong>Diseases</strong> to be held in Hyderabad<br />

in <strong>October</strong> 1986.<br />

Junior Award : The cash award <strong>of</strong> Rs. 500/-<br />

instituted by the TB Association <strong>of</strong> India for<br />

the best Essay by a senior medical student<br />

on “The Basis, Technique, Interpretation and<br />

Scope <strong>of</strong> the Tuberculin Test” has been won<br />

by Shri Arun Peter Chindripu, final year student<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.<br />

The award will be presented to<br />

Shri Chindripu at the inaugural session <strong>of</strong> the<br />

41st National Conference <strong>of</strong> TB & Chest <strong>Diseases</strong>.<br />

Shri R.C. Garg Memorial Award : The R.C.<br />

Garg memorial cash prize <strong>of</strong> Rs. 1,000/- for the<br />

best article published in the Indian Journal <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Tuberculosis</strong> during 1985 has been awarded<br />

for the article entitled “Sero-diagnostic Tests<br />

in <strong>Tuberculosis</strong>” by Drs. A.M. Samuel,<br />

G.V. Kadival and M.D. Ashtekar <strong>of</strong> the Radiation<br />

Medicine Centre, Bombay, published<br />

in the January 1985 issue <strong>of</strong> the Indian Journal<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Tuberculosis</strong>. The award will be presented<br />

to the authors at the inaugural function <strong>of</strong> the<br />

41st National Conference on TB & Chest<br />

<strong>Diseases</strong> on 25th <strong>October</strong>, 1986.<br />

UTTAR PRADESH STATE CONFERENCE<br />

The VHIth Uttar Pradesh State Conference<br />

on <strong>Tuberculosis</strong> and Chest <strong>Diseases</strong> was<br />

held at the M.L.N. Medical College, Allahabad<br />

on 16th and 17th March, 1986. The Conference<br />

was inaugurated by Dr. P.C. Vyas, Pramukh<br />

Nideshak, Chikitsa Swasthya Avam Pariwar<br />

Ka,lyan and presided over by Dr. M. L.<br />

Mehrotra, Ex-Director-Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the TB<br />

Training, Demonstration Centre and Chest<br />

<strong>Institute</strong>, Agm. Pr<strong>of</strong>. S.R. Singh, Principal,<br />

Medical College Allahabad welcomed the delegates<br />

and Guests. Dr. M.M.S. Siddhu, Honorary<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> the U.P. TB Association spoke on<br />

‘Voluntary efforts in <strong>Tuberculosis</strong>’ and Dr. K.B.<br />

Varshney, J.D. Allahabad Division released the<br />

Souvenir brought out on the occasion. Dr. K.B.<br />

Kharey, Joint Director (TB) Medical & Health<br />

Services, U.P. and Organising Secretary <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Conference proposed the Vote <strong>of</strong> Thanks. The<br />

Scientific Sessions included the 4th “Robert<br />

Koch Centenary Oration” by Dr. M.M. Singh<br />

on IMMUNE RESPONSE IN<br />

TUBERCULOSIS, and papers on “Short-<br />

Course Chemotherapy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tuberculosis</strong>”, “TB<br />

Meningitis”, “Allergy”, “Case-finding Camps”<br />

and assorted papers on various aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

tuberculosis. A cultural programme was also<br />

organised.<br />

HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMP<br />

Under the auspices <strong>of</strong> the TB Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh and TB Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Ranga Reddy District, a general health checkup<br />

camp was organised by Sree Satya Sai Organisation<br />

at Ramakrishna Vidyalaya (School) Sainikpuri,<br />

Secunderabed on 10-8-1986, in which<br />

about 50 specialists took part. Dr. G. Narsing<br />

Rao, former Principal <strong>of</strong> the Osmania Medical<br />

College and Convenor <strong>of</strong> Sree Satya Sai Organisation,<br />

inaugurated the Camp. The Principal<br />

Secretary to Medical & Health, Sri P.L. Sanjiva<br />

Reddy, and Principal Secretary to the Irrigation<br />

Department, Sri Natarajan, visited the Camp.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 1,250 persons were checked up and 9<br />

were found to be sputum positive.<br />

TB CAMP<br />

Under the joint auspices <strong>of</strong> TB Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Andhra Pradesh, Distt. TB Association, Nalgonda,<br />

Lions Club <strong>of</strong> Taranka, Hyderabad and<br />

Cross Regional Centre, Turkapally, a TB Camp<br />

was organised at Turkapally, Nalgonda District<br />

on 5th and 6th July, 1986. Sri N. Narsih-mulu,<br />

Hon’ble Ministet for Power, inaugurated the<br />

Ca,mp. The whole expenditure <strong>of</strong> the camp was<br />

borne by Regional Cross Centre, Turkapally,<br />

Nalgonda. A total <strong>of</strong> 349 person,s attended the<br />

camp; 70 were found X-ray positive and 11<br />

sputum positive.
