“NZFA Rules Clinic with Ralph Roberts
In order to get the new sailing season off on the right track, the Waiuku
Yacht Club and NZFA are hosting a ‘Racing Rules of Sailing’ clinic on
Sunday 3rd October 2004. We are very fortunate indeed to have
Ralph Roberts hosting this clinic for us. Ralph is an accomplished
international Finn sailor and current international sailing judge. He
has represented NZ at six Olympics, first as a competitor in 1960, ‘64
and ‘68, taking gold in the Flying Dutchman class in Tokyo in ‘64.
Athens was Roberts’ third Olympics as an official. Ralph has just
returned from the Athens Olympic regatta where many of the races
were determined in the protest room, leading to Ralph spending 13
hours a day on duty. Some of the decisions that affected the NZ sailors
will no doubt feature in the clinic.
Yachting New Zealand & NZFA Training Weekend
I am very pleased to announce that Peter Fox, coach to Dean Barker
during his Olympic Finn campaign for Athens, will be leading a joint
YNZ and NZFA training weekend at Thames SC on 9th and 10th
October 2004. This training weekend is open to all NZ Finn sailors
or those wishing to take up Finn sailing. Emphasis will be on
encouraging future Olympians into the Finn, promoting the class,
bettering our general sailing skills and an excuse for lots of fun and
socialising in the evening.”
ITALY

Coppa Italia Finn 2004
This year saw another increase in participation in the Coppa Italia,
a series of 7 regattas held during spring and summer weekends
in Italy. With only 1 regatta missing, the traditional Malcesine Finn
Cup in October, 28 races were held with 90 Italian competitors.
The provisional leaders are now the two young hopes of the Italian
Finn class, Riccardo Cordovani and Jacopo Tacchino, followed by
the emerging master Nicola Menoni.

Imperia June 28 - July 4
The Italian Finn
championship was
held as usual
together with all the
other Olympic
classes in Imperia.
The overall winner
was Michele
Marchesini (right),
very well trained in
preparation for the
Olympics in Athens,
who dominated the
fleet with a very
consistent series (1-1-1-2-2-1-1-DNF). Runner up was the young
local Jacopo Tacchino, while Riccardo Cordovani confirmed last
year’s third place. The first master was Claudio Bosetti who came
fourth, just a small 0.7 points in front of his elder brother Roberto.
Bracciano
Finn activity is blossoming again on Bracciano lake, in preparation
for the 2005 Finn World Masters. In September the traditional
‘Settembre sul Lago’ regatta, organised for almost 40 years by the

AVVV yacht club, was the final act of the annual Finn championship of the
Rome region. A record fleet of 31 Finns was present, and 6 races were run
over 3 days. First was Fabrizio Antolini Ossi, a strong Finn sailor in his
young days, now back in the Finn after several years on the Star and other
classes. Second was the veteran Bruno Catalan and third Andrea Guidi.
