Telling Stories: Hastings is an Arts

involving work by artists from Hastings
and Margate.
Alongside the main exhibition at Hastings
Museum there will be a series of free
workshops, events and performance, and
Telling Stories: Fringe at Electro Studios
Project Space in West St Leonards.

This year we are delighted
to introduce several special
commissions: Strange Cargo are
joining us as artists-in-residence,
creating an intriguing permanent
public art commission with the
community of Hastings & St Leonards.
The Seaside Hotel is a collaboration
between Sharon Haward, Miranda
Sharp and Marina Tsartsara, who will
bring to life St Mary in the Castle,
interweaving three distinct narratives
for only one afternoon. 10 x 10 by
Kate Murdoch invites the audience
to contemplate their attachment to
objects through exchange and Marcin
Dudek dramatically transforms The
Stade Hall with Exico Vol. 2.
Join us on 8 September at the Stade
Open Space to celebrate the opening
of the festival with Karavan Ensemble
creating a site-specific adaptation of
the award winning Anima, with guest
performer Yumino Seki.
For 16 days we offer you an
opportunity to journey within the
Hastings arts scene and explore a
wealth of events that reflect the
vibrancy of Hastings & St Leonards.

Artists in Residence - Strange Cargo
HIGHLIGHT
My Heart Belongs to
Hastings is an exciting
public art commission by
Strange Cargo, a company with
an international reputation
who have won many art
awards, producing high
quality, innovative celebratory
arts projects involving large
numbers of people. The project,
My Heart Belongs to Hastings
will be unique to Hastings and
launches during the Coastal
Currents Arts Festival with an
unveiling of the sculpture on 23
September. The commission will
become a permanent sculpture
in the town on the seafront and
will be enjoyed by everyone.
Individuals from and visitors
to Hastings will have the
opportunity to contribute
and be part of the sculpture.
People will decorate a padlock
with messages, love tokens
and initials weaving coloured
threads, beads and jewels to
a random padlock key as a
reminder and souvenir of their
participation in the artwork.
Each padlock will represent
an individual member of
the community, who will all
contribute their personalised
padlock to the artwork. The
sculpture will be created using
reclaimed greenheart groyne
timbers from Pevensey Bay
coastal defence work, each
wooden post weathered by
years of saltwater and spray.
Strange Cargo will deliver a
series of artist led workshops
with partners across Hastings
& St Leonards including The
Bridge Community Centre,
Parkwood College and St
Michaels Hospice. The workshop
programme will take place
in the lead up to the Coastal
Currents festival and will result
in many hundreds of decorated
padlocks being attached
to the sculpture. Stainless
steel mooring shackles will
become the fixing points for
the padlocks on the wooden
structure, which will hang
in organic fronds, similar in
appearance to rope grown
mussels, or lush fronds of
seaweed. The interlinking
padlock installation will grow
in shape and size as people
attach new locks to the artwork
and people can continue to
add their own locks after the
artwork is unveiled.
Documentation from the
project My Heart Belongs to
Hastings, will culminate in an
exhibition at Stade Hall of
photographs gathered and
video documentation taken
from all community groups
who have been involved and
engaged with the development
of the project.

The Towner in
Eastbourne is another recently
completed project that has the
largest display spaces in the South
East and housing a collection of
4000 artworks and thanks to
Art Fund International a growing
collection of significant contemporary
art. The Towner collection started in
1922 with pastoral paintings of local
Sussex landscapes, now includes the
largest and most significant body of
work by Eric Ravilious (1903-1942).
Towner is a centre for study and
display of Ravilious’s work and the
gallery prides itself on being an open
resource and appealing to all ages
and all art lovers.
The iconic De La Warr Pavilion,
located on Bexhill Promenade, was
designed and built in 1935 by Erich
Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff.
It was Britain first modernist public
building and it is as glamorous and
astounding today as when it was
first built. It has become one of our
country’s best loved architectural
landmarks and the adaptability of its
flowing spaces lends itself perfectly
to high quality exhibitions and
live performances of international
repute. It continues to lead the
field and nurture experimentation
in art and music with a focus on
inter-disciplinary practice and multifaceted

The incredible pool of talent from Hastings, St Leonards and Rother
contributes to the unique character of Open Studios, which is an
inextricable part of Coastal Currents Visual Arts Festival.
Whether you are an art and craft collector or a first time buyer Open
Studios provide you with a great opportunity to view and buy artwork
directly from artists and makers, usually in the studios where the pieces
were created.
The work covers different media, from painting, sculpture, photography
to textiles, prints and many others.
