COM221 Arab and International Media<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the development, operation,<br />

and analysis of Arab and world communication<br />

systems. Problems of cross cultural<br />

communication, and the influence of new<br />

technologies, particularly satellite television<br />

and the internet, on traditional societies, as<br />

well as the relationship between Arab and<br />

international communication and politics, are<br />

covered.<br />

Prerequisite: COM210 Communication Media<br />

and Society.<br />

COM222 Introduction to Radio/TV/Film<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a study of the basic techniques<br />

of radio, TV, and film, from their beginnings to<br />

the present. Familiarization with equipment<br />

and basic production procedures will be<br />

stressed.<br />

COM225 The Art of Film [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a study of the formal, and<br />

esthetic, fundamentals of the film medium. It<br />

covers the viewing and analysis of important<br />

films, in the development of this art.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG202 Sophomore Rhetoric,<br />

and COM222 Introduction to Radio/TV/Film.<br />

COM235 Studio Television Production<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the theory, practice,<br />

and technical aspects of studio television<br />

production, including basic program types,<br />

such as news, talk shows, and commercials<br />

(studio and on location).<br />

Prerequisite: COM222 Introduction to Radio/<br />

TV/Film.<br />

COM236 Radio Production [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers radio production as a<br />

means of communication and influence. The<br />

basic principles and production techniques are<br />

studied.<br />

Prerequisite: COM222 Introduction to Radio/<br />

TV/Film.<br />

COM238 Drama Workshop [1-3, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the various aspects<br />

of theatrical activities, including building,<br />

scenery, properties, lighting, costumes, design,<br />

construction, etc…<br />

This course can be taken more than once.<br />

COM241 Introduction to Acting [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an introduction to the actor’s<br />

technique and the performer’s skills, exploring<br />

the elements necessary to begin training as<br />

an actor. The course focuses on the physical<br />

and vocal exercises, improvisations, and scene<br />

study.<br />

COM242 Introduction to the Art of Theater<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an introduction to the theater,<br />

from its ancient origins to the present, its<br />

history, production, design, acting, direction,<br />

etc…<br />

Prerequisite: ENG101 English I, can be taken<br />

concurrently.<br />

COM244 Introduction to Technical Stagecraft<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an introduction to the visual<br />

aspects of theater production, including a<br />

survey of the principles and practices of<br />

theater organization and management, scene<br />

design, and stage mechanics.<br />

COM247 Theater in Performance [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

Students taking this course can earn credits<br />

by participating in the productions of plays<br />

in major roles as an actor, or as a technician<br />

under the direction of Faculty members.<br />

COM249 Theater in Lebanon & the Arab World<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an overview of the history of<br />

theater in Lebanon, and the Arab World, from<br />

Maroun Naccache to the present. The course<br />

involves a study of selected Arabic plays, in text<br />

and performance, as well as the emergence of<br />

theater companies, and the development of<br />

theater organizations and festivals.<br />

Prerequisite: COM242 Introduction to the Art<br />

of Theater.<br />

COM251 Interpersonal Communication<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course helps to increase students’<br />

understanding, and implementation, of<br />

effective interpersonal communication<br />

behaviors. The course examines the basic<br />

verbal, and nonverbal, elements affecting<br />

communication among individuals, within the<br />

family, peer group, and work contexts. Topics<br />

include strategy development, relationship<br />

and conversation management, defensive<br />

communication, and cultural and gender<br />

issues in communication style.<br />
