Department of Natural Sciences
students are equipped with PC- controlled
Viscosity meters, Osmometers, BOD
analyzers, Turbiditimeters, Refractometers
and Polarimeters. The advanced system of
Instrumentation supporting all branches
of Chemistry include a wide range of
spectrophotometers UV- Visible; Infrared
FTIR; highly advanced PC-controlled
Chromatography systems, GC and HPLC and
Ion Chromtography; Total Organic Carbon
and NCHS Elemental analyzers systems;
Atomic Absorption. Annexed to the Chemistry
laboratories are the storage facilities with
the latest safety equipment of gas detection,
chemical spill and fire alarm systems, with
the waste treatment facilities with the new
standards of waste treatment and waste
management methods. The Chemistry labs
are equipped with audiovisual systems
including video microscopy for continuous
demonstration and experimental purposes.
2. Byblos Campus
The laboratories are equipped with both
basic and latest technology instruments that
enable students to conduct basic and highly
specialized research. In addition, to facilities
available in the department, students have
access to laboratory facilities in the School
of Pharmacy. Furthermore, students have
access to all physical and electronic resources
provided by the LAU library as well as necessary
IT support.
A. Biology Labs
a. Biology Teaching Labs:
The two teaching labs are located in the
science building rooms 307 and 308: Each
lab accommodates around 20 students and
is equipped with all necessary facilities for
undergraduate lab teaching (microscopes
with or without cameras, incubators,
centrifuges, balances, pH meters, UV-Vis
spectrophotometers, spirometers, kymographs,
Environmental chamber …). Annexed to the lab
in Sci 308 are two relatively smaller rooms, one
serves as a store room for chemicals, glass and
plastic-wares, the other contains a High speed
centrifuge, an Ultracentrifuge, 2 refrigerators
and other minor equipment.
b. Core Molecular Microbiology research Lab:
It is located in the Science building room
306: This lab is specifically equipped to
fit the research needs in basic Molecular
Microbiology. It provides a space for graduate
students working in Molecular Microbiology
and Biotechnology. This lab is equipped with
3 Thermal cyclers, a Real-Time PCR, a UV/
visible spectrophotometer, a Biolog bacterial
identification system, a PCR preparation unit
as well as 2 air incubators and other minor
instruments.
c. Two Core Molecular Biology Labs:
Two labs located in the Science building rooms
303 and 305. Each Lab consists of three
benches serving as working area for graduate
students. These labs are equipped specifically
to fit the research needs in Molecular Biology.
These labs are equipped with thermal cyclers,
DNA sequencer, Pulse-Field gel electrophoresis
unit, Gel documentation systems, Fermenters,
CO2 incubator, vacuum concentrator,
vacuum blotter, sonicators, homogenizers,
Gel electrophoresis apparatus, Western blot
apparatus, automated gel stainer/destainer,
Rotary evaporator, autoclaves, hybridization
oven / UV cross linker, deep freeze, refrigerators,
inverted and regular microscopes, laminar
flow hood, and many other small instruments.
Each lab has several computer terminals
accessible to Graduate students and linked to
the university network and high speed internet
d. The Genomics and Proteomics Research
Labs:
The Genomics and Proteomics Research Labs
are located in room Sci 302 and 309. These
labs are equipped with state of the art machines
needed in genomics and proteomics research.
Most importantly, you can find high throughput
genotyping and sequencing instruments as well
as a state of the art proteomic analyzer (MALDI
TOF TOF), FTIR, Real-Time PCR ….
e. The Cell Culture IVF/Epifluorescent
microscopy lab
This is a dry lab located in room Sci 310 and
contains two major instruments: an inverted
Epifluorescent microscope equipped with
a micromanipulating system for in vitro
fertilization and a radioactive/fluorescent
microplate counter and a CO2 incubator.
B. Nutrition Teaching Lab:
It is located in the Science building room 304.
The lab is equipped with necessary machines
for food analysis.
C. Animal Room:
The animal room is located on the roof of
the Science Building. It contains two animal
species (Spague Dawley rats and BALB/c
mice) that are inbred with a consistent
average stock of more than 500 rats and
300 mice.
