ENG101 English I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed to reinforce effective<br />

and critical reading and writing skills, with<br />

emphasis on summarizing, paraphrasing, citing<br />

sources, and study skills. The course emphasizes<br />

<strong>academic</strong> style and task-based work.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG009, or EEE score 500 -<br />

549, or its equivalent.<br />

ENG102 English II [3-0, 0 cr.]<br />

This course is designed to develop advanced<br />

reading and writing skills associated with<br />

<strong>academic</strong> work. Emphasis is on the analytical<br />

and critical reading of texts, as well as on<br />

writing in a variety of modes. Students<br />

develop a research paper and learn to<br />

formulate researchable questions through<br />

locating appropriate resources in the library,<br />

the community, and the electronic media.<br />

Students also learn to organise their findings,<br />

to develop their manuscript, and to cite their<br />

sources following the <strong>academic</strong> conventions.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG101 English 1, or EEE score<br />

between 600–649, or its equivalent.<br />

ENG202 Sophomore Rhetoric [3–0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is for practice in reading and<br />

writing, both formal and creative. It covers<br />

critical analysis, evaluation, formulation, and<br />

the presentation of verbal and written opinions<br />

based on the best possible evidence. It also<br />

covers the methods of formal argumentation.<br />

Prerequisite ENG102 English II, or EEE score of<br />

650 and above, or its equivalent.<br />

ENG203 Fundamentals of Oral<br />

Communication [3–0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the fundamentals of oral<br />

communication, along with a practice in<br />

platform speaking, in expository and persuasion.<br />

Emphasis is placed on the use of correct and<br />

effective language and organizational skills<br />

in preparing, delivering and evaluating the<br />

different types of oral presentations.<br />

Prerequisite ENG102 English II, or EEE score of<br />

650 and above, or its equivalent.<br />

ENG 211 Literature I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

Offers a critical study of literature from the<br />

ancient world through the Renaissance with<br />

emphasis on the European and Mediterranean<br />

traditions. Readings chosen emphasize themes<br />

that continue to resonate in the present.<br />

Topics and writers studied may include: Greek<br />

mythology, Homer, Sappho, Virgil, Petronius,<br />

Dante, Rabelais, Anna Bijns.<br />

ENG 212 Literature II [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

Offers a critical study of Western literature from<br />

the seventeenth century through the twentieth<br />

century as a continuation of ENG 211.<br />

Topics and writers may include: Montaigne,<br />

Cervantes, Baroque poetry, Molière, Goethe,<br />

German romanticism, Chekhov, Kafka.<br />

ENG213 Introduction to Language [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a survey of the theoretical bases<br />

of language study, emphasizing theories of<br />

language origins and developments. Topics<br />

include semantics, syntax, pragmatics, writing<br />

systems, dialects, phonology, and the contrast<br />

between communication, true language, and<br />

artificial language.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG102 English II.<br />

ENG214 English Grammar [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is a study of the grammatical<br />

structures, and a critical analysis of the<br />

descriptive uses of grammar.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG102 English II.<br />

ENG303 Literary Linguistics [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course offers a systematic linguistic<br />

approach to literary analysis, utilizing such<br />

linguistic tools as transitivity and voice,<br />

deixis, tense, modality, etc... It aims at<br />

consolidating students’ knowledge of both<br />

literature and linguistics, by drawing on their<br />

interconnectedness.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG102 English II.<br />

ENG306 Introduction to Phonetics and<br />

Phonology [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course deals with phonetics, phonological<br />

analysis (including segmental, consonant and<br />

vowel, as well as supra-segmental, stress,<br />

intonations, juncture, pause, and rhythm<br />

features), comparative analysis, and native<br />

language interference in second language<br />

learning. It includes examples from a wide<br />

variety of languages, with special emphasis<br />

on the sound systems of English and Arabic.<br />

Students develop basic skills in comparative<br />

phonological analysis.<br />
