CULTURAL STUDIES<br />

CST101 Civilizations [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course provides a preliminary survey<br />

of the origins of ancient cultures ending up<br />

with the Greek and Roman civilizations, by<br />

emphasis on Mesopotamia, Egypt, Phoenicia,<br />

and India. The survey includes a study of the<br />

birth of civilization that comes along with the<br />

development of human tools that mark the<br />

conquest over the powers of nature. Cultural<br />

texts, artifacts, rituals, and other practices<br />

(medicine, hunting, clan grouping, loyalty to<br />

leaders, etc.) will be explored as contributing to<br />

the formation of a civil identity specific to these<br />

different cultures and peoples.<br />

CST201 Cultural Studies I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course traces the major developments in<br />

the global human experience from the birth of<br />

civilization, through the Middle Ages. Source<br />

material is drawn from the humanities, the fine<br />

arts, the social sciences, and the natural sciences,<br />

and is organized thematically around key topics.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG101 English I.<br />

CST202 Cultural Studies II [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course traces the major developments in<br />

the global human experience from the 14th<br />

through the 18th Centuries. Source material is<br />

drawn from the humanities, the fine arts, the<br />

social sciences, and the natural sciences, and<br />

is organized thematically around key topics.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG101 English I.<br />

CST203 Cultural Studies III [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course traces the major developments in<br />

the global human experience during the 19th<br />

and 20th Centuries. Source material is drawn<br />

from the humanities, the fine arts, the social<br />

sciences, and the natural sciences, and is<br />

organized thematically around key topics.<br />

Prerequisite: ENG101 English I.<br />

ENGLISH (INTENSIVE)<br />

ENG002 Intensive English II [12-2, 0 cr.]<br />

This is a non-credit, intermediate level, English<br />

course, aimed at consolidating previously<br />

learned skills, and expanding into new areas<br />

using controlled texts, programmed materials,<br />

and situational activities. Emphasis is placed<br />

on speaking, listening, reading, and writing,<br />

according to an integrated content-based<br />

approach with laboratory support.<br />

Prerequisite: English Entrance Exam (EEE)<br />

400–449 or its equivalent.<br />

ENG003 Intensive English III [12-2, 0 cr.]<br />

This is a non-credit, advanced level, English<br />

course, aimed at bridging the gap between<br />

Intensive English, and English 009 Academic<br />

English, proficiency. Emphasis is placed on<br />

listening, speaking, reading, and writing,<br />

according to an integrated content-based<br />

approach with laboratory support.<br />

Prerequisite: EEE 450–499 or equivalent.<br />

Notes:<br />

• To pass from ENG002 to ENG003: A minimum<br />

grade of “D” is required, or a score between 450–<br />

499 or its equivalent, on the EEE.<br />

• To pass from ENG002 to ENG009: A minimum<br />

grade of “C+” is required or a minimum score of<br />

500, or its equivalent, on the EEE.<br />

• To pass from ENG003 to ENG009: A minimum<br />

grade of “C” is required, or a minimum score of<br />

500, or its equivalent, on the EEE.<br />

• However, a student must get a minimum grade of<br />

“D” in the Intensive English course to be eligible to<br />

sit for the Intensive English Comprehensive Exam.<br />

• Students registered in Intensive English II and III<br />

may also register for one or two University courses<br />

(a maximum of 3–4 credits) that require minimal<br />

English, as specified by the Intensive English<br />

Program, and upon the consent of the Intensive<br />

English Advisor, and the student’s advisor in the<br />

Major.<br />

• Students, who pass from Intensive English into<br />

the University English, are placed in the University<br />

English courses according to their EEE scores, or<br />

equivalent. Intensive English students who have<br />

passed the <strong>LAU</strong> Intensive English and do not have<br />

an EEE, or an equivalent score, before entering<br />

the University, will be placed into ENG009.<br />

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE<br />

ENG009 Remedial English II [3-0, 0 cr.]<br />

This course is designed to develop effective<br />

reading and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on<br />

the paragraph and essay formats. Basic grammar<br />

and mechanical skills are revisited. Laboratory<br />

sessions reinforce listening, speaking and study<br />

skills. The course emphasizes <strong>academic</strong> style<br />

and task-based work.<br />

Corequisite: INF201 Learning Resources<br />

Techniques.<br />

Prerequisite: EEE score 500 - 549 or its<br />

equivalent.<br />
