ARA321 Creative Writing [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course seeks to train students to write<br />

correctly in Arabic, in several styles, especially<br />

the styles that are proper to literature and the<br />

mass media.<br />

ARA322 Principles of Translation [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course deals with the principles of<br />

translation, and the translation from English<br />

into Arabic, and vice versa.<br />

ARA332 Ancient Arabic Literature [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course covers the representative authors<br />

of pre-Islamic, Omayyad and Abbassid periods.<br />

Extracts from their main works in poetry and<br />

prose are read, and analyzed.<br />

ARA333 New Trends in Modern Literature<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course studies the intellectual background<br />

of modern and contemporary Arabic prose,<br />

and poetry, analyzing chosen texts by the<br />

leading authors.<br />

ARA341 Modern Arabic Novel & Short Story<br />

[3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course traces the origin of fiction in<br />

ancient Arabic literature, and the development<br />

of the modern Arabic novel, and short story,<br />

in the 20th Century. Works by representative<br />

authors are analyzed.<br />

ARA342 Arabic Drama [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is an introduction to the principles<br />

of dramatic art, its evolution from classicism<br />

to romanticism and modern trends, as well as<br />

its development in the Arab world in the 19th,<br />

and 20th, Centuries, through the study of<br />

representative authors in the field.<br />

SPECIAL ARABIC<br />

SAR105 Colloquial Arabic I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed for non-native<br />

speakers beginning their study of colloquial<br />

Arabic. It progresses methodically, aided by<br />

materials that are based on a comparative<br />

linguistic analysis of English and Arabic. The<br />

course follows an aural-oral approach.<br />

The course is only open to students exempted<br />

from Arabic.<br />

SAR106 Colloquial Arabic II [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed to establish a mastery<br />

of the colloquial Arabic sound system, and a<br />

practical efficiency in the use of colloquial<br />

Arabic grammatical structures, with an<br />

expanded vocabulary.<br />

Prerequisite: SAR105 Colloquial Arabic I, or<br />

equivalent.<br />

The course is only open to students<br />

exempted from Arabic.<br />

SAR111 Standard Arabic I [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed for non-Arabic<br />

speakers beginning their study of standard<br />

Arabic. The course teaches elementary<br />

reading and writing, and establishes basic<br />

language skills in the use of the Arabic sound<br />

system. It covers a limited vocabulary, and<br />

basic standard grammatical structures.<br />

The course is only open to students exempted<br />

from Arabic.<br />

SAR112 Standard Arabic II [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed for non-Arabic speakers<br />

of modern standard Arabic on the intermediate<br />

level. The course teaches grammatical skills,<br />

within a slightly expanded vocabulary, enabling<br />

students to read unvowelled texts.<br />

Prerequisite: SAR111 Standard Arabic I or its<br />

equivalent.<br />

The course is only open to students<br />

exempted from Arabic.<br />

SAR221 Developmental Arabic [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course develops appreciation, and<br />

improves skills, in the reading and writing of<br />

various types of prose. Individual attention is<br />

given to students’ linguistic and communicative<br />

proficiency.<br />

CHINESE<br />

CHN 201 Beginning Chinese [3-0, 3 cr.]<br />

This course is designed for students with no<br />

previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese, the<br />

official language of China. It aims at providing<br />

them with spoken and written knowledge of<br />

the language at the basic survival level. At the<br />

listening/speaking level, emphasis is placed<br />

on the phonological subtleties of intonation<br />

in Chinese and how these affect meaning. At<br />

the reading/writing level, both a phonological<br />

based system (Pinyin) and a logographic<br />

system will be simultaneously adopted. An<br />

interactive, communicative approach to<br />

teaching will be used in order for students<br />

to actively experience the language in as<br />

authentic and functional a context as possible.<br />
