BACHELOR OF ARTS (B.A.)<br />
IN ENGLISH<br />
The B.A. in English prepares students for a<br />
career in fields that demand clear writing and<br />
expression in fluent English, the presentation of<br />
logical arguments, and the critical evaluation of<br />
the opinions of others. Besides education, these<br />
fields include business, pre-law, communication,<br />
journalism, advertising, technical and creative<br />
writing, and translation. Students with diverse<br />
interests are welcome.<br />
MISSION<br />
The Mission of the Bachelor of Arts in English<br />
Program is to offer a superior English Program<br />
which appeals to students, and which offers<br />
the widest range of career possibilities after<br />
graduation.<br />
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />
The purpose of the Bachelor of Arts in English<br />
Program is to:<br />
1. Provide our students with the<br />
interdisciplinary background, and the<br />
expertise in speaking, and to provide<br />
them with the analytical and writing skills<br />
needed to make them fully qualified for<br />
the various career paths including, but not<br />
limited to, advertising, banking, business,<br />
journalism, NGO work and publishing.<br />
2. To prepare our students for today’s<br />
interdisciplinary Graduate Studies<br />
Programs in English, Comparative<br />
Literature, Cultural Studies, or any field of<br />
the Humanities.<br />
3. To give our students wishing to pursue a<br />
career in high school education a level of<br />
literary and cultural proficiency, which will<br />
qualify them for the best jobs in Lebanon,<br />
and the Region (assuming they also<br />
acquire the Teaching Diploma).<br />
LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />
Graduates in the Bachelor of Arts in English will:<br />
1. Enhance their writing proficiency through<br />
literary and linguistic assignments.<br />
2. Acquire both literary and linguistic content<br />
in various areas, and become aware of the<br />
cultural, political, and social perspectives<br />
of different societies<br />
3. Analyze and critique different topics, and<br />
develop their research methods.<br />
4. Reflect upon the different aspects of<br />
today’s global issues, in a literary and<br />
linguistic framework.<br />
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE<br />
LITERATURE EMPHASIS<br />
Graduates in the Bachelor of Arts in English with<br />
Literature Emphasis will:<br />
1. Develop a high level of proficiency through<br />
written assignments and reports.<br />
2. Demonstrate a well-developed oral<br />
proficiency, through oral reports, and/or a<br />
question-and-answer teaching strategy.<br />
3. Demonstrate the ability to subtly appreciate<br />
the allusive qualities of literature, film, and<br />
other arts (through cross-listed and teamtaught<br />
courses).<br />
4. Acquire a solid knowledge of the thematic<br />
content, and the formal features of<br />
the English literary tradition, from the<br />
Middle Ages to the present, through<br />
the coursework which emphasizes the<br />
constructiveness of meaning.<br />
5. Recognize, examine, compare, analyze,<br />
and evaluate the principal theoretical<br />
assumptions in literature and culture,<br />
through coursework in theory.<br />
6. Acquire a sense of, and reflect upon, the<br />
relevance of literature and culture in the<br />
social and political life of a people, through<br />
courses that focus on the connections<br />
between literature and social issues.<br />
7. Acquire a firm grasp of research methods,<br />
through the emphasis on the written<br />
component of coursework.<br />
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE<br />
LANGUAGE EMPHASIS<br />
Graduates in the Bachelor of Arts in English with<br />
Language Emphasis will:<br />
1. Identify and explain the different<br />
subcategories related to language,<br />
namely: morphology, syntax, semantics,<br />
and pragmatic.<br />
2. Describe and distinguish the major<br />
grammatical functions related to language.<br />
3. Analyze language, and its social context,<br />
and explain the linguistic differences<br />
encountered within a society.<br />
4. Identify and summarize the different<br />
reading and writing approaches, and the<br />
strategies related to the English language.<br />
