IN EDUCATION<br />

MISSION<br />

Under the umbrella of <strong>LAU</strong>’s Vision, the Mission<br />

of the BA in Education (ECE & Elementary)<br />

is to prepare professional teachers who are<br />

<strong>academic</strong>ally well grounded in both their subject<br />

matter, and pedagogy, and to enable experienced<br />

educators to update their knowledge and skills.<br />

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />

The BA in Education (ECE & Elementary) aims to<br />

prepare teachers who demonstrate:<br />

A. Relevant Knowledge – This includes:<br />

• Depth and breadth in subject, and in<br />

content.<br />

• General pedagogical knowledge.<br />

• Specific pedagogical content knowledge.<br />

• An awareness of the professional<br />

standards.<br />

• An awareness of the developmentally<br />

appropriate practice (in early childhood<br />

education).<br />

• An awareness of the national curriculum<br />

objectives and standards.<br />

B. Practical Skills<br />

• Diverse approaches to instruction, and<br />

assessment.<br />

• Effective classroom management<br />

strategies.<br />

• Motivational strategies.<br />

• Strategies to promote higher-level thinking.<br />

• Guidance and Discipline methods.<br />

C. Appropriate Attitude<br />

• Readiness to develop authentic relationships<br />

with students.<br />

• Readiness to establish a democratic, and<br />

socially just, learning environment.<br />

• Readiness to reflect on one’s practice, and<br />

continuous learning.<br />

LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

Graduates in the BA in Education (ECE &<br />

Elementary) will be able to:<br />

1. Develop clear and measurable instructional<br />

objectives.<br />

2. Prepare yearly, term, and unit plans to<br />

adequately address curriculum content.<br />

3. Prepare plans for effective instructional<br />

cycles, using a variety of instructional<br />

approaches appropriate to the content/<br />

skill.<br />

4. Employ effective instructional practices<br />

that optimize learning opportunities.<br />

5. Use appropriate assessment methods,<br />

both formative and summative.<br />

6. Plan and implement effective classroom<br />

management strategies.<br />

7. Employ strategies to motivate students.<br />

8. Implement strategies that minimize discipline<br />

problems.<br />

The Early Childhood Education Program<br />

prepares students to:<br />

• Plan and administer all the aspects of early<br />

childhood programs.<br />

• Teach young students basic motor and<br />

cognitive skills through art, music, creative<br />

dramatics, and other techniques<br />

• Use carefully planned teaching strategies<br />

based on children’s developmental stages.<br />

The Elementary Education Program prepares<br />

students to:<br />

• Teach children reading, language arts,<br />

mathematics, science, social studies, art,<br />

drama, music, and physical education.<br />

• Employ teaching strategies, which<br />

stimulate children’s thinking and challenge<br />

them to learn.<br />

• Use the latest instructional tools, and<br />

techniques, to make your teaching more<br />

effective.<br />

CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS<br />

The BA in Education requires a total of 95 credits,<br />

which includes:<br />
